Many teachers today make the mistake of painting a picture of Christianity that leads people to believe that life will be a bed of roses if they would just give their lives to Christ. Unfortunately, when the first trial comes - as they most certainly will - the new believer often finds discouragement and feelings of abandonment. On today's Dwelling Place, we'll see the apostle Paul working to dispel this notion in the Book of Romans. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1425/29

A lot of people become interested in church because they realize that something is missing from their life. They expect that being a Christian will give them a new sense of purpose, a better family, or comfort during a hard time.

What would you be willing to give up or sacrifice to reach the lost or to be effective in the ministry God has you in? Would you let go of a liberty or right that you have? It's good for us to think about these things and we'll do just that today on a Daily Walk. We're in the middle of pastor John Randall's series in First Corinthians, and in chapter nine we're challenged to be sacrificial just as the apostle Paul was. Here in America we focus a great deal on our rights and freedoms. But as we'll see today on a Daily Walk sometimes as ministers of Jesus we'll need to give up some of our rights and liberties for very good reason. Pastor John Randall has us consider First Corinthians chapter nine and a time when the apostle Paul gave up his rights as an apostle for the sake of his fruitfulness and effectiveness in the ministry. In the final episode of the Self Sacrifice series, “Setting Boundaries,” Pastors Josh Slautterback and Robey Barnes explore the crucial role of boundaries in a life of self-sacrifice. They unpack how self-sacrificial love, while central to the Christian walk, doesn't mean neglecting personal boundaries, which are essential for spiritual and emotional well-being. Through practical guidance and biblical wisdom, they discuss how to give of ourselves in service to others without compromising our own health or calling. This episode equips listeners with tools to serve others wholeheartedly while also preserving the strength needed to continue serving well.
You call yourself a Christian, but denying yourself and taking up your cross is not very high on your agenda. Pastor Colin talks about what you must see before you'll be able and willing to do this.
You're probably familiar with this advertising formula: maximize the benefits, minimize the risks, and put all the costs in fine print. Pastor Colin talks about why Jesus uses the fine print of Christianity in his headlines.
In this episode of the City Rev Life Podcast, “Self Sacrifice, Part 3: The Dangers of People Pleasing,” Pastors Robey Barnes and Josh Slautterback dive into the dangers of people-pleasing when striving to live a life of self-sacrifice like Christ. They discuss how the desire to please others can conflict with the biblical call to put God's will first and lead to burnout, misplaced priorities, and a distorted view of self-sacrifice. Together, they explore how to set healthy boundaries and maintain a Christ-centered focus while serving others, avoiding the trap of seeking approval from people over God.
In this episode of the City Rev Life Podcast, hosts Pastor Josh Slautterback and Pastor Robey Barnes dive into the fine line between living a life of self-sacrifice and falling into the trap of a Messiah complex. While the Messiah complex can feel so noble, even masquerading as genuine self-sacrifice, it can lead us to mistakenly believe that everything falls on our shoulders. But what does it truly mean to serve without losing sight of God's role? Join us as we unpack the wisdom from Scripture on how to avoid the pitfalls of trying to “save the world” and instead focus on living with humility, healthy boundaries, and trust in God's ultimate plan.

The right response to all that God has done, is to offer our bodies through worship as a living sacrifice. With a heart posture of praise, our physical posture will surely follow.

The Old Testament is foreign to modern people in many ways. And one of the most striking examples of a “weird” practice has to do with the very specific, and often very messy practices surrounding ritual sacrifice. Last episode, we saw how sacrifice is required by God. But we'll continue with this conversation, and look at the specific sacrifices in the Old Testament in different occasions. There were sin-offerings, peace-offerings, and holocausts, which are burnt-offerings. They also made use of bread, wine, food – and very often, whole animals, blood, fat – why? And more interesting to us today, what does this all represent about the Mass celebrated at your chapel this morning? When did mankind begin to make sacrifices to God? What did they look like? As we have seen already in this series, the concept of making a sacrifice, or of putting something aside for the worship of God, is nothing new and it is not exclusive to the Judeo-Christian tradition. Man understands that he has duties to his creator. So today we will look back at our ancestors, specifically the practices of the Chosen People and how they worshipped God. In part two of this subject, we'll see how it all connects to the Mass. But this week, let's see how we worshipped – millennia ago. As Paul moves to his instructions for what a life shaped by the gospel looks like, he begins with an appeal. His appeal is that his readers would live as sacrifices to God. What kind of sacrifices are we to be? How does this define for us what true worship is? What would prevent us from becoming these sacrifices? What is the catalyst that leads us to this kind of gospel-shaped sacrifice? All this is answered in two really important verses of this book.
