“The experience of ‘being in error' so inevitably accompanies the perception of beauty that it begins to seem one of its abiding structural features. … Something beautiful fills the mind yet invites the search for something beyond itself…”—Elaine Scarry Luke 5:1-11
Jesus Calls the First Disciples 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said […]

Where are you seeing signs of Jesus calling you or others? Where have you experienced him interrupting your life? When Jesus called the disciples, they "left everything and followed him". Caroline spoke about Jesus calling us today, as he does so what in your life needs to be left behind?

Matthew 9:35-10:4
Jesus calls us to radical transformation, just as He called Levi, the tax collector, to leave everything behind and follow Him. Levi, later known as Matthew, was a man despised by society, yet Jesus saw past his sin and called him to a new life. This is the heart of the Gospel—Jesus doesn't seek the self-righteous, but those who know they need Him. When Matthew answered the call, he didn't hesitate; he abandoned his wealth, his position, and his past to walk with Christ. What about us? Are we willing to surrender everything that holds us back and follow Jesus completely?Following Jesus isn't about maintaining comfort—it's about transformation. When Matthew embraced his calling, his first response was to invite others to meet Jesus. He hosted a feast, gathering the outcasts and sinners, showing us that the call to Christ is also a call to share His love. But the Pharisees scoffed, missing the heart of Jesus' mission: He came not for the well, but for the sick; not for the righteous, but for sinners. So today, the question remains—are we clinging to our own righteousness, or are we humbling ourselves before the Savior? Will we let go of what holds us back and step into the life-changing grace of Jesus Christ?

Today's Promise: Luke 19:4-5 Jesus cared about individuals. Although he taught the crowds, He always took the time to personally meet the needs of the sick and hurting. When Jesus came across a corrupt tax collector named Zaccheus, He could have condemned him for his corrupt business practices, but He looked past all that to a short little man with a hurting heart. God knows your name. God loves the world, but He loves you just as much. He knows your name and wants a relationship with you.
The world would want us to seek revenge and delight in the downfall of the other. Jesus wants us to pray for those hurt us and do good to them. He wants us to forgive. Tough calls from the Lord. But most rewarding. He wants us to live differently.
Jesus calls us not just to believe but to follow. In Luke 5, we see Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen encounter the authority of Christ in a miraculous way. After a fruitless night of fishing, Jesus tells them to cast their nets once more—against all logic, against their own understanding. And what happens? Their nets overflow with fish, so much that their boats begin to sink! In that moment, Peter recognizes who Jesus truly is, falling to his knees in awe. But Jesus calls him to something greater: "Do not fear; from now on, you will be catching men."This is the call for us today. Jesus is not just a teacher, not just a miracle worker—He is Lord, and He calls us to leave behind what we once clung to and follow Him. Like Peter, James, and John, we are called to be fishers of men, to step out in faith even when it goes against our instincts, trusting in the One who holds all authority. Will we drop our nets? Will we follow? Let us respond, not with hesitation, but with full surrender to the call of Christ.
Jesus had this funny trait--he broke the rules, on purpose. So let's tell some stories about when and why he did that!KIDS! We want to give you a shout out or talk about your question. Send a note to askawaypodcast@gmail.com!ADULTS! There's more for you at the Kids + Faith Community.

Entrust Your Burdens to Jesus | Luke 5:1-11 Life is full of moments when we feel like Peter—exhausted, discouraged, and questioning why our efforts seem fruitless: “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!” (Luke 5:5). We echo Isaiah's lament: “Woe is me! I am a man of unclean lips!” (Isaiah 6:5). In these moments of doubt and despair, the temptation is to give up. We long to trust Jesus at His Word, to try again, but the results often seem worse than before. Yet, when all else fails, we cling to what never changes—the Word of the Lord and His gracious promises. Like Peter and Isaiah, we may hesitate to listen, but when we do, we find that Christ never fails us. He forgives, sanctifies, and restores. No matter how overwhelming our burdens, we hear His unshakable promise in the Divine Service:

Mark 1:14–20 (Listen) Jesus Begins His Ministry 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;1 repent and believe in the gospel.” Jesus Calls the First Disciples 16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”2 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. In this week's message, we continue our series “Kingdom Treasures” in the book of Luke. This week we see that Jesus calls us to full surrender. Pastor Eric Hovis poses three questions to consider… 1) Are we surrendered in salvation? 2) Are we fully surrendered with our resources? 3) Are we fully surrendered with our entire lives?
Pastor Tony Fleming poses the question, What will you do when Jesus calls on you?
We continue our series through the Sermon on the Mount. Pastor Rich leads us in exploring the first three Beatitudes that Jesus teaches and we discover how Jesus' way exposes the lies we have come to believe about our world and ourselves. Scripture Referenced: Matthew 5:3-5
