A Living Sacrifice… (Rom 12:1-2, John 13:1-17) Chris Weniger
06.14.26 Calvary Chapel Santa Maria
I. The design of a priest's ministry is to enable others to dedicate themselves to God with thanksgiving for what God has done for them, vv14-15. II. The daily bread of a priest's ministry is provided for by God out of the gifts of the people of God, vv16-18. III. The demand of a priest's ministry is that he daily dedicate himself to God just as the people of God dedicate themselves to God, vv19-23. IV. The danger of a priest's ministry is that he become joyless and thankless in his service of God and the people of God, vv19-23.

Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | June 14, 2026 Referenced Scripture: Romans 1:16-17, Romans 12:1-2 Reflection Questions:1. Where in your spiritual life have you struggled to see the change you have wanted to see? What has made that change difficult for you? What area of your life do you find yourself regularly disobeying God? Read Romans 12:1-22. “Therefore”What is the “therefore” there for? What is Paul referring back to at the beginning of chapter 12? 3. “In view of God's mercy”Why would reflecting on the grace and the mercy of God provide motivation and a catalyst to desire change in your life or obey God? Have you ever obeyed out of fear rather than gratitude? What is the challenge/problem of letting fear be the motivation to surrender your life to God? 4. Take a few minutes to reflect on the cross of Jesus and on how you have seen the grace and mercy of God in your life. Share some of the ways you have seen God's mercy. Take a few minutes to thank God in prayer for what He has done. 5. What does it mean to “offer your body as a living sacrifice”? What are examples of how you have done this or should be doing this? Are there any areas of your life that you are holding back from God? Explain. What makes these areas of your life difficult to surrender to God? 6. “True and proper” is literally translated “logical” (greek: logicon)Why is surrender to God the only “logical” response to the good news of the gospel? 7. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world”What does it mean to conform to the pattern of this world? What assumptions do I hold that come more from culture than Scripture? How does the world think differently than God in the areas of success, happiness, identity, sexuality, money, or power? 8. Where am I adopting cultural values instead of biblical values? Where do I need to renew my thinking? 9. Why do you think that transformation begins first in the renewing of our mind? 10. What content fills my mind? What voices are the loudest in my mind? Does it move me toward Christ or away from Him? Explain… 11. What practices are helpful to you to renew your mind and have God's perspective over the perspective of this world? Where do you need to grow in renewing your mind? How will you do this? What's your next step? * Connect: We'd love to connect with you! Present Your Body a Living Sacrifice. Romans 12:1-2. Pastor Alex Costa
The most important thing about a Christian is not merely that his sins are forgiven or that he will go to heaven when he dies, wonderful as those truths are. The greatest thing is that, by the grace of God, he has become a worshiper of the true God. And that worship is not just something we do with our lips on Sunday morning; God also calls us to present our whole lives as a living sacrifice, offering ourselves to him in thankful devotion. Christians wonder what they are supposed to do. There are many different answers. Romans 12:1 says to offer our bodies. That's the believer's act of worship, which is any move we make in dependence on Jesus.
Khwezi shares about the difference between pillars and altars, and reminds us to be living sacrifices daily.

This week, Pastor Ulysses continues our series through the book of Romans with a message from chapter 13. In this passage, Paul addresses the Christian's relationship to governing authorities and reminds us that God remains sovereign over every earthly power. As we explore these sometimes challenging verses, we're encouraged to consider what faithful citizenship and faithful discipleship look like in an unbelieving world.
In this sermon on Romans 12:1–2, Deacon Dustin begins a series on a life of holiness by showing that Christian obedience is never detached from the gospel. The "therefore" of Romans 12 rests on the mercies of God displayed throughout Romans 1–11: humanity's sin, God's righteousness, justification by faith, peace with God, freedom in Christ, sovereign election, salvation for all peoples, and the doxology of worship. Holy living is not produced by fear, shame, or self-reliance, but by the kindness and mercy of God. Christ not only justifies His people from the guilt of sin, but sanctifies them by the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul calls believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices. This means holiness involves real self-denial, an ongoing fight against sin, and a life wholly devoted to God's glory. The will of God for every Christian is sanctification. Finally, obedience is spiritual worship. God saves first, then calls His redeemed people to walk in holiness. True worship is not limited to songs or services; it is the whole life offered back to God in grateful obedience. The gospel does not merely inform the mind. It transforms the life.

Epistle to the Romans chapter 12 calls believers to respond to God's mercy by offering their lives as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to Him. Paul urges Christians not to conform to the patterns of the world, but to be transformed through the renewing of their minds. The chapter emphasizes humility, unity within the body of Christ, the use of spiritual gifts, sincere love, patience in trials, and overcoming evil with good. Romans 12 reminds us that true worship is not only what we say, but how we live, serve, love, and reflect Christ daily. Romans 12 marks the shift from understanding God's mercy to embodying it, calling believers to offer their whole lives as worship through ongoing surrender and inner renewal. Out of this transformed mind flows a new way of living marked by humility, where identity is received rather than asserted, and by a shared life where each person's gifts are given for the good of others. Love becomes the defining expression of this life, not as sentiment but as a steady, discerning, and active commitment to what is good. Even in the face of opposition or harm, the way forward is not retaliation but a radical trust in God's justice, choosing instead to meet evil with tangible goodness. In this vision, the Christian life is not separate from everyday reality but woven into it, forming a people whose lives quietly reflect the mercy they have received.
Romans 12:1 challenges us to see our lives as something entrusted to us by God, not something we've achieved. In light of His mercy, we are called to offer our whole selves as living sacrifices, giving Him not just our emotions and feelings, but our everyday lives. True worship is not confined to a moment, but expressed in all of life through faithful, wholehearted living that seeks to please Him.
Feeling unfulfilled? Andrew shares his personal journey of seeking God's purpose, stressing that true contentment stems from being in the center of God's will—for every person, not just ministers!
In Romans 12:9-21, we encounter a powerful challenge to our faith: if we claim to be living sacrifices for Christ, where is the evidence? This passage dismantles the notion that our faith can remain invisible or private. Just as Old Testament sacrifices were unmistakable—visible, audible, and tangible—our lives surrendered to God should be equally evident. We are called to live with open hearts that love authentically and consistently, not just those who benefit us but every image bearer of God. We are called to live with open hands that serve diligently, sharing our lives and resources without expecting anything in return. We are called to live with open eyes that see people as God sees them, rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep. And we are called to live with open arms that extend grace even to our enemies, conquering evil with good. This is not merely a list of moral behaviors to check off; it is the natural fruit of a heart transformed by the gospel. The question confronting us is simple yet profound: if Christianity were on trial, would there be enough evidence in our lives to convict us of being followers of Jesus? The call is not to try harder in our own strength, but to live out who we already are in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Struggling with feelings of anger or frustration? Andrew emphasizes the importance of seeing others through God's eyes, using powerful examples to illustrate compassion over contention.
Romans 12:1-2 — In matters of Christian conduct, does one appeal to the mind or to the heart? These are often pitted against one another, but Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones does not believe the Christian should approach the Christian life by making an appeal to merely the intellect or simply the emotions. Instead, he says, one begins with doctrine –– who they are in Christ –– and then the proper conduct is deduced from the doctrinal truth. True doctrine always appeals to the emotions. In this sermon on presenting your bodies as a living sacrifice from Romans 12:1–2 titled “A Living Sacrifice,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones reminds that there is no such thing as dry-as-dust theology. Humanism and legalism stand in opposition to the true teaching of Scripture. Humanism can only appeal to the intellect, whereas legalism appeals directly to the will of the person. The great motive of the gospel, which is God's great mercy in Christ Jesus, lifts the whole problem of conduct to a spiritual level. He then works out the implications of the apostle Paul's appeal to the mind and the heart in Christian conduct. He labors to demonstrate that Paul is presenting the entire physical body as a sacrifice to God who by His great mercy makes Christians participants in this glorious and wonderful salvation. Our culture constantly tells us: get more—more money, more influence, more security, more success. But in today's MY Devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef flips that message with Scripture's radical Truth: the key to a faithful life isn't acquiring—it's giving God your all. When you truly grasp the price of your salvation, generosity stops feeling like duty and becomes gratitude. Dr. Youssef points to Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:14–15, reminding us that Christ didn't die so we could continue living for ourselves—He died and rose again so we would live for Him. Paul held tightly to two life-changing realities: Jesus took his place at the cross, and God called him as an ambassador to announce the cure for sin. That same Gospel motivation belongs to every believer today. You'll also hear why Paul urges Christians to offer themselves as living sacrifices—surrendering heart, mind, time, comfort, and resources to the Lord who is worthy of everything. If you've been chasing “success” the world's way, this episode will recalibrate your priorities and reignite your passion for Christ-centered living. Prayer: God, You have done so much for me. I want to give You all of me as a living sacrifice. Help me to keep these Truths about Your love for me and Your call on my life at the forefront of my mind so that I honor You rightly. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. Today's MY Devotional has been provided by Leading The Way. The voice you hear on the MY Devotional podcast is digitally generated with Dr. Youssef's permission. The Bible exhorts us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. It's easy to curate an image—successful, spiritual, “together.” But the charade ends where it matters most: before God, who sees the heart. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef points to Paul's sobering reminder in 1 Corinthians: every believer will one day stand before the Lord and have their works tested. This isn't about salvation—Christ settled that at the cross, purchasing our righteousness by His blood. This is about eternal rewards and the reality that motives matter. Dr. Youssef explains the difference between building with: gold, silver, and precious stones—faithful obedience offered to Jesus with pure motives, and straw—doing the right things for the wrong reasons, seeking self-glory instead of Christ's glory. As you listen, ask yourself: Am I building for the glory of Jesus—or for something else? This devotional calls you to surrender your time, talents, and resources fully to the One who is worthy—so your life brings extravagant honor to Christ. Today's MY Devotional has been provided by Leading The Way. The voice you hear on the MY Devotional podcast is digitally generated with Dr. Youssef's permission.
