Colossians 3:9-17
Continuing the sermon series, "From Creation to Canaan," Pastor Steve covers the final book in the Pentateuch: Deuteronomy. In it, Moses gives his "farewell discourse" to the people, warning them to obey the Lord through several speeches and a repetition of key points of the Law. "Don't do this the hard way, like I did," Moses argues, "Obey the Lord." What is obedience, and why is it important? Pastor Steve unpacks the choice Moses gave to the Israelites, ending in the question, where is God calling you to obey today?

Explore the powerful concept of replacement theology and the question of who are God's chosen people today through a deep dive into the Bible, Torah, and Quran. This episode examines the idea of covenant with God, the legacy of Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, and how different faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—understand divine selection and guidance. By analysing key passages from scripture and prophetic traditions, it uncovers a recurring pattern about obedience, faith, and what it truly means to belong to God's chosen nation, inviting viewers to reflect on their place within this ongoing spiritual narrative.

The Fifth Commandment given to Moses was to honor father and Mother... The Lord our God has always honored women in scripture. Women have been instrumental in the formation of the Chosen People, Israel, as well as many important points in Old Testament history. Certainly without a woman the Savior could not have come as He did. God bless our mom's.
What is means to be Jewish and what if you are not
This message continues our series The Big Picture by focusing on Act Four—The Chosen One (Jesus)—where everything in Scripture finds its fulfillment. After tracing the story from the Garden to the Fall to the Chosen People of Israel, we see how the promise was never about elevating one nation but about pointing to one person—Jesus. Looking at the opening of the Gospels and key moments in Luke, we explore how Jesus fulfills the promises made to Abraham, David, and ultimately to all people. Like a story rooted in a greater story, the life of Jesus only comes fully into view when we connect it to what came before. From his first sermon in Nazareth to the road to Emmaus, Jesus reveals that all of Scripture has been leading to him.
Today we read about the moment David is made king over all Israel. Fr. Mike reveals that as David begins his rule, he has both strengths and weaknesses. Today we read 2 Samuel 5, 1 Chronicles 7-8, and Psalm 27. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Christian person, have you ever thought of yourself as a priest? Our baptism makes us to be people who share in the priesthood of all believers. We are to minister in a kind of priesthood, through the power of the Holy Spirit, spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and offer sacrifices of love and praise to God the Father in and through our daily lives.
In Week 3 of The Big Picture, we step into “The Chosen People” and trace the unfolding story of God's rescue mission through Abraham and the nation of Israel. Beginning in Genesis 12, we see God make a promise to bless all nations through one family, but what follows is a story filled with faith and failure, hope and dysfunction. From Abraham to Moses to the giving of the Law, God reveals His heart and calls His people to live differently, yet Israel continually falls short. Even in their rebellion, exile, and brokenness, God remains faithful, raising up prophets who both confront sin and point forward to a coming rescue. This message shows how the entire Old Testament builds tension and expectation, setting the stage for Jesus, the One through whom God ultimately fulfills His promise to bless, redeem, and restore the world.
Hot takes are everywhere, and in a culture driven by TikTok clips and instant opinions, it's getting harder to tell the difference between confident voices and actual truth. Jase, Al, and Zach push back on the growing trend of soundbite theology, where complex biblical ideas are reduced to quick, oversimplified answers that often miss the bigger picture. Using current debates around Israel and broader theological disagreements, the guys highlight how easily people can present personal interpretations as absolute biblical truth. In this final episode of Called, Cleansed, and Built, we center everything on Christ—the Living Stone. 1 Peter 2:4–10 reveals that our identity and purpose are inseparable from Him. Though rejected by the world, Jesus is chosen and precious to God—and those who come to Him are being built into something eternal. This passage reminds us that we are not random or insignificant. We are chosen, set apart, and positioned with purpose. As living stones, we are being built together into a spiritual house, called to declare His praises. This episode brings the series full circle: we were called, we were cleansed, and now we are being built for His glory.
What is the concept of the chosen people? It is mentioned by our chapter. Are we chosen because we are better? Or we called to act better?

New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 152 The usual understanding of the Jewish people is that the Jews are God's "chosen people." What does that mean? Well, it doesn't mean what antisemites and detractors of Jews tend to believe it means, and what it means is actually extremely interesting. In this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay "goysplains" the idea of Jews being God's "chosen people," aiming to explain what is meant by that claim and what it entails for Jews and others. This episode is meant as an explainer for non-Jews, obviously, as Jews already know this (better than James does), so join him to hear him try to explain it to you so you can understand this genuinely interesting belief better for yourself. Aren't the Jews still saved because they're God's chosen people? Let's find out together as we read Romans 2:17-29 and Ezekiel 36:16-38.
The Jewish people are known as the chosen people, an identity rooted in the Scriptures yet ridiculed by many of the Jewish people's antagonists today. Join Ty as he talks with Jewish Frontline's Shlomi Bennett about what the title means, what it doesn't, and why it matters.
In 1 Peter 2:9–10, Peter reminds the church that our identity is rooted in who God says we are not in what we do. As we enter the season of Lent, this passage calls us to remember that we are chosen by God and invited to reflect His light in the world. In this message from our Lent series, we explore:• Why our identity must be rooted in Jesus rather than performance• What it means to live as a “royal priesthood” in everyday life• How Lent invites us to hold sorrow and joy together on the path to Easter• Why the church exists to declare the goodness of God to the worldFaith isn't meant to be lived alone. When we gather as the people of God, our joys, griefs, questions, and hope come together—and Jesus meets us in all of it.
What does it really mean when Jews are called “the Chosen People”? Is it a claim of superiority—or something entirely different? In this episode:Who chose who? What does “chosen” actually mean?Chosen for what? So… is it racist?

“If you disestablish Christianity, then Christian leaders need to make Christianity a consumer product. They need to give the American people something they want.” — Matthew Avery SuttonOver the years, Keen On has done many shows on the relationship between the United States and organized religion. Daniel Williams argued that smart people still believe in God. Jim Wallis warned that a false white gospel is threatening America. But we've never quite done a show on Christianity as “the thing in itself”—the force that made America what it is, for better and for worse. That's what this conversation is about.Historian Matthew Avery Sutton's new book, Chosen Land: How Christianity Made America and Americans Remade Christianity, is a sweeping argument that Christianity is not just part of the American story—it is the American story. The founders created a godless Constitution not out of principle but pragmatism: they couldn't pick a winning denomination. The unintended consequence was to open the floodgates. Powerful Protestant groups seized even more power, building an unofficial establishment that shaped everything from westward expansion to the Civil War to the rise of the religious right.Sutton's most provocative insight is that disestablishment turned Christianity into a consumer product. Forced to compete for adherents against entertainment, sports, and media, American churches became entrepreneurial, technologically savvy, and relentlessly current—reinventing themselves every generation. That's what sets American Christianity apart from the rest of the Western world. It also helps explain Trump: a president who uses Christianity in a “crass, overt, and hypocritical” way, but who is doing something that generations before him built the infrastructure to enable. Whether this is Christianity's last gasp or the prelude to another great revival, Sutton says, nobody knows. But the air we breathe in America is Christian air, and this book explains how it got that way. Five Takeaways• The Godless Constitution Backfired: The founders couldn't pick a winning denomination, so they disestablished religion. It was pragmatic, not ideological. But this opened the floodgates. The Christians who already had the most power—Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians—seized even more, creating an unofficial Protestant establishment that determined who was in and who was out.• Christianity Became a Consumer Product: Disestablishment forced churches to compete for adherents. They had to be aggressive, entrepreneurial, current—competing with entertainment, sports, and media. They became masters of new technologies and communication, reinventing Christianity every generation. That's what sets American Christianity apart from the rest of the world: an unintended consequence of the First Amendment.• The Civil War Was Christians Killing Christians: Presbyterians killing Presbyterians, Methodists killing Methodists. It exposed the fragility of the effort to build a Christian utopia when you can't settle the question of slavery. The Confederates actually wrote God and Jesus Christ into their constitution—they believed the Union had gone off the rails because its Constitution was too godless.• The Liberationists Are the Heroes: Indigenous preachers who saw Jesus as liberator, Black Christians, gay rights activists in the 1960s and 1970s, Barack Obama. There have always been alternative visions of Christianity in America. Sutton's heroes are those who see Jesus as a radical figure who wants to overturn hierarchies and bring equality.• This May Be Christianity's Last Gasp—Or Not: Just under two-thirds of Americans now identify as Christian—a historic low. Trump's hypocrisy is driving young people away. In anointing Trump as their savior, the religious right may have hammered the final nail into their coffin. But every time scholars predict secularization, America has a revival. Nobody knows what's next. About the GuestMatthew Avery Sutton is the Claudius O. and Mary Johnson Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of History at Washington State University. He is the author of Chosen Land: How Christianity Made America and Americans Remade Christianity as well as American Apocalypse and Double Crossed, and a recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship.ReferencesPrevious Keen On episodes mentioned:• Daniel Williams on why smart people still believe in God• Jim Wallis on the false white gospel and faith and justice• Margaret Atwood on The Handmaid's TaleAbout Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. Read OnlineJesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. Mark 7:31–32Throughout Jesus' public ministry, His actions, while purely charitable, were often deliberate and provocative. His words and deeds testified to the true meaning of the Mosaic Law by exposing the damaging legalism of many Pharisees, whose misinterpretations deeply influenced God's Chosen People. For example, Jesus healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath (cf. Mark 3:1–6) and cured a man who had been lame for thirty-eight years (cf. John 5:1–18). In both cases, Jesus was accused of violating the Sabbath rest as interpreted by the Pharisaic traditions. By challenging these restrictive and erroneous interpretations, Jesus demonstrated that the Sabbath is a day for mercy, healing, and honoring God, not a burdensome observance of human traditions. Jesus boldly lived the Mosaic Law as it was intended, while challenging the erroneous practices and beliefs He encountered. Another act of deliberate and charitable provocation was Jesus' ministry among the Gentiles. At that time, observant Jews often avoided direct interactions with Gentiles, considering them ritually unclean and outside the covenant community of Israel. Yet Jesus traveled into Gentile regions such as Tyre, Sidon, and the Decapolis. In today's Gospel, Jesus traveled from Tyre to Sidon and then to the Decapolis, where He healed a deaf and mute man. Being predominantly Gentile regions, they were marked by pagan worship, Hellenistic culture, and lifestyles often incompatible with Jewish religious practices. It is likely that Jesus' companions—the Twelve—were surprised and uneasy during these visits, but that was precisely the point. Their journey to these territories was itself a lesson Jesus intended to teach. By engaging with Gentiles, Jesus revealed that God's salvation is not limited to Israel but extends to all nations, fulfilling the promise made to Abraham: “All the families of the earth will find blessing in you” (Genesis 12:3). In doing so, Jesus began preparing His disciples to shed nationalistic biases and embrace the universal scope of God's covenant of salvation. The healing of the deaf and mute man carries profound significance. First, by performing the miracle in predominantly Gentile territory, Jesus directed its meaning beyond the Jews to all peoples of every nation. The message is clear: By healing the man's deafness, Jesus teaches that all must hear the saving message of the Gospel. By healing his speech impediment, Jesus further teaches that all who hear the Gospel are called to proclaim it.Though the manner of this healing—putting “his finger into the man's ears and, spitting, touched his tongue”—is rich with symbolism, it also reveals Jesus' personal and compassionate approach. For a deaf and mute man, spoken words alone would not have conveyed what Jesus was about to do. By using touch and visible gestures, Jesus communicated with the man in a way he could understand, engaging him personally and tenderly. This reflects the boundless compassion of Jesus, Who meets each of us where we are.Reflect today on the lesson the Twelve learned as they traveled with Jesus through Gentile and pagan regions. As followers of Christ, we must learn not only from His words but also from His actions. The Creed, the Sacraments, and the moral teachings of the Church are not meant for Catholics alone but for all people. At times, sharing the Gospel might require charitable provocation within the social circles in which we live and work. We must strive to do so in ways that people can understand, setting aside artificial or inconsequential traditions that obstruct the message. True compassion leads us to every person, making us instruments of their salvation, knowing that the message we bring is for all, so that “all the families of the earth” may find blessing in God through you.My compassionate and provocative Lord, You confidently and lovingly challenged the burdensome and restrictive traditions that had overshadowed the true spirit of the Mosaic Law, pointing Your disciples—and us—to the universal scope of Your saving mission. Grant me the courage and wisdom to be an instrument of Your Gospel to everyone I meet. Help me to love them where they are, with the tenderness and compassion You show, so that they, too, may be drawn into the joy of Your eternal Kingdom.
