Today, we'll dive into a passage that shows the disciples' not-so-great track record. They're asked to stay awake and pray, but guess what? They keep nodding off! But here's the thing, Jesus stays faithful and trusts in God's plan, even when it's tough. And that's exactly what we need, right? Not to rely on our own strength or power to stay awake or to follow God, but on what Jesus does for us. So, let's come together and celebrate Jesus and learn practical ways to stay awake in our spiritual journey!

While we all likely have places we want to visit, there are also places we never hope to visit. One such place is a place called Gethsemane.
The Garden of Gethsemane was a favorite spot for Jesus and His disciples to spend time together when they came to Jerusalem. It is a beautiful garden, a peaceful garden perfectly suited for prayer. But it is far more than that. It was a garden of pressure, prayer, and priorities. Through this message, we discover what Jesus faced that night out of love for us and submission to the Father's will, we see a pattern for our prayers, and are forced to examine our priorities.

Our text depicts a weighty time. Jesus knew what he would face in the next few days. He tells the disciples what is about to happen, which must have sounded unbelievable to them. Jesus returns to a place where he had prayed many times in this heaviest time. He takes three of his closest disciples a little further into the garden to pray. It is essential to have close friends during times of trial, but this time, Jesus had to go even further by himself because he needed to distance himself from the distractions. Jesus asked them to pray with him, but these men who pledged to defend him to the death not long ago could not even stay awake for an hour of prayer. The garden is usually thought of as a place of life and growth, but Jesus went to the garden to die. The garden is not a place where we try to change God’s mind; A garden is a place where we go to change. The garden is about us.

What do you do when your prayers aren’t answered? What do you do when God doesn’t answer your prayers the way you expect? In all things, even prayer, we should seek to follow Jesus and the example He set for us. • Listen as Pastor Jeremy teaches from Mark 14:132-42 in the sermon, Love and Submission. When we seek answers from God in prayer, it is important to trust His love and submit to His will: 1. Trouble & Temptation | 2. Power | 3. Trust | 4. Submission |

How do we get past that lingering doubt in us that often we can’t even tell is working against our faith? We will be in three different passages today, but our main one is Mark 14:32-42. There are three key words that will help us understand how to gain our break through so we can reign in this life! Also, Jesus highlights a spiritual attitude that most of us pursue. In fact, we put a lot of effort into it, but it is NOT helping us obtain the goal. Find out what it is and how you can stop squandering your efforts and expectations on something that won’t do what you think it will.

His reign isn’t measured by how many people serve Him but by how many He serves. "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NLT)

CHORAL ANTHEM presented after the sermon "All My Trials" ~ arr. Ed Lojeski .......... Mark 14:32-42(NRSV) 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ 33 He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. 34 And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ 35 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’ 37 He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, ‘Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him. 41 He came a third time and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.’

Jesus prays at the garden of Gethsemane and is himself sorrowful.
Jesus, in His humanity, needed not only the fellowship of the Father but also the companionship and emotional support of His disciples.
Mike Morgan, Senior Director of Caring Ministries, helps us envision the reactions of Jesus and his disciples to the events of Thursday, the day before Christ was crucified. Christ shows the disciples what deep grief is: the war between willing spirit and weak flesh. It is a universal struggle from which we can not only learn about Christ's suffering, but about what it means to be faithful and present for our own neighbors in need.
