Every time film critic Rob Hunter returns to Certified Forgotten, he brings the weirdness. This time, he's got a Spanish horror film that focuses on a movie-within-a-movie ... within another movie? Bigas Luna's Anguish stars Michael Lerner as an eyeball-obsessed killer who strikes fear in the audience watching the movie he's starring in, The Mommy. The camera pulls out, and we see we're not the only viewers paralyzed by what unfolds ... and that's just the beginning. About Anguish An ophthalmologist's assistant with an unhealthy interest in human eyeballs (Michael Lerner) goes on a killing spree to collect eyeballs for his overbearing mother's collection (Zelda Rubinstein). Reality soon takes a bizarre turn for both the characters and the audience. At twelve, Julie stared at a clawed arm at the end of her bed for seven seconds and then went back to reading, and the two decades that followed are why a UFO investigator spent weeks taking her statement.DEEP-DIVE ARTICLE about Archer Avenue & Resurrection Mary: https://weirddarkness.com/resurrection-mary/EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/EncountersOfJulieREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mtepz5jcFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: If you've listened to Weird Darkness for any length of time, you know that I will often suggest someone who has had a paranormal disturbance in their home or life, reach out to a pastor or priest for guidance. But what exactly happens when the Catholic Church starts investigating the paranormal? (When The Catholic Church Goes Ghost Hunting) *** Many states around America say they have the most haunted road in the country. And while the words “most haunted” are somewhat subjective, it's hard not to see why people outside of Chicago consider Archer Avenue not only the top spooky street in America, but the most haunted on the planet. (The Anguish Of Archer Avenue) *** After allegedly murdering her husband in 1960, Sharon Kinne shot her lover's pregnant wife. Then, she evaded justice and escaped to Mexico only to kill again — before vanishing without a trace. (The American Murderess Who Disappeared in 1969) *** Modern courtrooms aren't equipped or knowledgable enough to determine whether or not ghosts are real, but that hasn't stopped ghosts from appearing in several court cases! (Court Cases Involving Ghosts) *** When you hear of a two-headed creature you typically think of two heads side-by-side growing from the neck and shoulders area. But have you ever heard of a creature growing another head on the very top of it's other head? It happened… and not to just any creature. It was a human boy who lived much longer than anyone expected. (The Bengal Boy With Two Heads) *** Buried alive inside the castle walls, the Finnish Maiden immured still haunts the medieval building of Olavinlinna Castle. (The Maiden of Olavinlinna Castle) *** The case of “Julie” from Carlisle in the United Kingdom is an intriguing one not only because it unfolded over many years, but because it appears to straddle the line between apparent reptilian entities and paranormal activity. Dave Hodrien of the Birmingham UFO Group interviewed her in early 2022 about twenty years of reptilian sightings, poltergeist activity, and shadow figures that followed her from that bedroom into the hospital wards where she later worked as a senior nurse. From there comes the boy born in the Bengali village of Mundul Gaut in May 1783 with a second head sitting inverted on top of the first, an upper head that wept and tried to nurse while its expressions ran independent of the child's. A cobra killed him at four, a salt agent for the East India Company robbed his grave, and his skull still sits in the Hunterian Museum in London as a specimen of craniopagus parasiticus, a parasitic twinning that occurs in two or three births out of five million. The Vatican's paranormal caseload runs through the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Consulta Medica, a board of Italian Catholic physicians who rule on whether a healing has any natural explanation, with Michael O'Neill of MiracleHunter.com estimating that 99.9 percent of investigated miracles are medical. Father Lampert puts genuine demonic possession at one case in five thousand, and the Vatican's revised 1999 guidelines require priests to consult mental health professionals before any exorcism is approved.Archer Avenue follows, the old Native American trail southwest of Chicago where Resurrection Mary has hitchhiked between the O'Henry Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery since the 1930s, and where police answering a call on August 10th, 1976 found the cemetery bars bent apart and scorched with handprints. The same stretch carries phantom monks at St. James of the Sag, a cloven hoofprint outside Kaiser Hall, a driverless hearse, the Maple Lake ghost light, and Red Gate Woods, where the world's first nuclear reactor lies buried from the Manhattan Project.Olavinlinna Castle, built on a lake island in southeastern Finland in 1475, holds the legend of the lord's daughter who opened the gate for her Russian lover and was condemned for treason and immured alive in the courtyard wall, with a rowan tree of white flowers and red berries said to have grown where she died.Sharon Kinne told police in March 1960 that her toddler had shot her husband, collected $230,000, and was acquitted of killing her lover's pregnant wife before fleeing to Mexico City, where she shot a man in a motel room and earned the nickname La Pistolera; she walked out of Iztapalapa prison during a blackout on December 7th, 1969 and has never been found. The episode closes on hauntings that reached a courtroom, from the 1917 Ouija-board novel Jap Herron credited to Mark Twain's ghost to Stambovsky v. Ackley, the 1991 Ghostbusters ruling that made a Nyack house legally haunted, and Gerald Brittle's $900 million suit daring Warner Bros. to prove the events behind The Conjuring actually happened.

Which version of you shows up when you pray?In this reflection on Psalm 55, John Ortberg explores a surprising truth about prayer: God doesn't want the cleaned-up, polished, "Disney version" of you. He wants the real you.The Psalms aren't theological essays or collections of perfectly polished emotions. They're raw prayers from real human beings bringing fear, anger, anguish, confusion, and desire honestly before God.John connects this idea to the original story of The Adventures of Pinocchio, which is much darker and more spiritually suggestive than the famous Disney adaptation. Pinocchio is lovingly created by his father, rebels against him, rejects his conscience, and longs for something he cannot accomplish on his own: to become real. And that's where Pinocchio's story intersects with ours.Transformation doesn't begin when we finally become the person we think God wants. It begins when the person we actually are becomes willing to stand honestly before Him.In this episode:Psalm 55 and honest prayerWhy every emotion in the Psalms isn't necessarily an instructionBringing our troubled thoughts before GodThe surprising theology of PinocchioConscience, rebellion, and the love of the FatherBiblical echoes of Jonah and the Prodigal SonMoving from a heart of stone to a heart of fleshWhy transformation begins with getting realScriptures:Psalm 552 Timothy 3:16–17Hosea 11:3Luke 15Jonah 1–2Matthew 12:38–40Ezekiel 36:26#Psalm55 #JohnOrtberg #Prayer #Psalms #Pinocchio #SpiritualFormation #ChristianFaith #BibleStudy #HonestPrayer #Transformation

Chances are good that you have a family member, a spouse or a child, or someone you love, who isn't a believer.  It brings great sorrow to know that they don't share the same comfort in difficult times, mercy, joy, the certainty of the resurrection and promise of everlasting life. Regrettably, not all Christians are comfortable talking about and sharing this common plight.  So, it's a blessing that the Holy Spirit led the apostle to share this very personal insight into his own sensitive struggle. And we can see how our Savior's patience and compassion shapes our response.

Send us Fan MailRomans 9:1–13 (RSV). Paul's Sorrow for Israel and God's Election Ken Corkins and pastor Rocky Ellison open Season 18, Episode 20 of “Pondering the Bible,” noting Rocky's recovery from recent throat surgery, then begin Romans 9:1–13 (RSV). They discuss Paul's “great sorrow” over Israelites who faithfully follow Jewish law and worship yet do not believe in Jesus, emphasizing salvation by faith rather than DNA. Rocky explains Paul's use of “conscience” as a morally driven, Spirit-validated witness and highlights Paul's willingness to be “anathema” for his people, comparing it to Moses' plea in Exodus 32. They note Paul's listing of Israel's privileges, his strong statement that Jesus is both Jewish and God, and his argument that God's promises are for the Church (believers), not ethnic lineage, contrasting this with dispensationalism. They close by examining Isaac, Jacob, and Esau as examples of God's elective purpose and acknowledging the Calvinism debate. 00:00 Welcome and Check In 00:43 Reading Romans 9 02:46 Paul's Anguish for Israel 04:09 Conscience and the Spirit 07:56 Willing to Be Accursed 11:31 Israel's Privileges and Christ 15:15 Promises Beyond DNA 17:59 Dispensationalism Detour 22:48 Isaac Jacob and God's Choice 24:31 Election and Calvinism 26:22 Wrap Up and Dad JokeNEW!: Rate us at Podchaser  Find us at www.pondergmc.org. Feedback is welcome: PonderMethodist@gmail.com Music performed by the Ponder GMC worship team.Cover Art: Joe WagnerRecorded, edited and mixed by Snikrock

God gives a message undergirded by the reliability of His own name, but the peopel would not hear Moses for their anguish of spirit, and cruel bondage. Such anguish is not uncommon in the human experience. Tonight we talk about how to help those whose ears are stopped because of an anguished spirit.

Sermon TextPsalm 3939 I said, “I will guard my ways,    that I may not sin with my tongue;I will guard my mouth with a muzzle,    so long as the wicked are in my presence.”2 I was mute and silent;    I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.3     My heart became hot within me.As I mused, the fire burned;    then I spoke with my tongue:4 “O Lord, make me know my end    and what is the measure of my days;    let me know how fleeting I am!5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths,    and my lifetime is as nothing before you.Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah6     Surely a man goes about as a shadow!Surely for nothing[a] they are in turmoil;    man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!7 “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?    My hope is in you.8 Deliver me from all my transgressions.    Do not make me the scorn of the fool!9 I am mute; I do not open my mouth,    for it is you who have done it.10 Remove your stroke from me;    I am spent by the hostility of your hand.11 When you discipline a man    with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him;    surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord,    and give ear to my cry;    hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you,    a guest, like all my fathers.13 Look away from me, that I may smile again,    before I depart and am no more!”

Carefully Examining the Text

These things match Job's experience (1:18-19).Bildad is describing the wicked man to say to Bildad that you are the man. What is the essence of the disagreement between Job and his friends?1. 18:4 Tear and anger are the same Hebrew words used in 16:9. Job said God is tearing me in His anger but Bildad says no Job, you are tearing yourself. 2. 18:5 The lamp of the wicked goes out. In 12:22, 25 Job emphasizes God making people grope in darkness but sin is never given as the reason for that in Job 12. In 21:17 Job questions how often the lamp of the wicked goes out.3. In 18:6 the lamp in the tent of the wicked goes out but in 12:6 Job asserted that often the tent of destroyers prosper. The use of the word tent highlights the difference between the wicked in the thoughts of the friends and Job. 4. In 18:8-10 Bildad pictures the wicked laying traps and hunting devices for himself by his own sin. In 16:9 Job said God is hunting him and in 16:13 shooting arrows at him.

Send us Fan MailKen Corkins and pastor Rocky Ellison continue “Pondering the Bible” (Season 18, Episode 16) by finishing Romans 7:7–25 from the Revised Standard Version. They discuss Paul's teaching that the law is holy and reveals sin—especially the internal sin of coveting—while sin exploits commandments as a “base of operations,” making forbidden things more tempting. Using Prohibition and a basketball-rules illustration, they explain that God's rules are meant to prevent self-inflicted harm, not punish, and that ignorance doesn't remove consequences. Paul's anguish highlights the ongoing war between a believer's mind that delights in God's law and a flesh still captive to sin; sanctification is the lifelong process of aligning mind and behavior. They close with Paul's cry for deliverance from the “body of death,” gratitude for Jesus, and anticipation of Romans 8's “no condemnation.” 00:00 Welcome Back and Setup 01:09 Reading Romans Seven 04:03 Law Reveals Sin 08:22 Rules and Consequences 14:15 Carnal Nature and Original Sin 16:39 The Inner War Explained 22:25 Anguish and Two Laws 25:31 Body of Death and No Condemnation 30:30 Takeaways and Next EpisodeNEW!: Rate us at Podchaser  Find us at www.pondergmc.org. Feedback is welcome: PonderMethodist@gmail.com Music performed by the Ponder GMC worship team.Cover Art: Joe WagnerRecorded, edited and mixed by Snikrock

Astalor Bloodsworn is the character at the center of the Midnight expansion's Prey feature, but this isn't the first time we've seen him. Matt, Joe, and Eric discuss his history, which dates back to the release of The Burning Crusade 20 years ago. They're answering listener questions this week, and the next topics diverge from that pretty wildly, examining how the WoW timeline gets a little wobbly when we go revisit things from the past, like old zones. But certain things we revisit in the game, specifically Hemet Nesingwary's entourage, seem to be pointing toward something sinister. Then we come to Elune and the World Trees, and how we seem to keep finding the blood of either Old Gods or the planet itself.Put together, this week's episode seems a bit more into blood than a usual show, which isn't really a high bar.If you enjoy the show, please support us on Patreon, where you can get these episodes early and ad-free! The Ache That Won't Go Away(Inspired by Larry Crabb's insight on the soul's deep longings)The Ache That Won't Go Away #RTTBROS #Nightlight"My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death." — Matthew 26:38You know, one of the most honest things I've ever heard a Christian counselor say stopped me right in my tracks. Larry Crabb, one of the contributors to the Soul Care Bible, wrote that "beneath the surface of everyone's life, especially the more mature, is an ache that will not go away." He said an aching soul is not evidence of neurosis or spiritual immaturity. It's evidence of realism.I've sat with a lot of people over the years, in hospital rooms, living rooms, and church pews, and I can tell you that is one of the truest things I've ever read. So many people carry a quiet ache inside them and then feel guilty about it, like something is spiritually wrong with them because they can't just "praise it away."Here's what I want you to hear tonight: even Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, said, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death." The Son of God sat with His disciples and let them see His anguish. He didn't perform spiritual cheerfulness for anyone. He was honest about the weight He was carrying. What Larry Crabb helped a generation of Christians understand is that the deep ache we feel in our souls is actually a longing for God and for the wholeness He alone can give. It's not a sign of broken faith. It's often a sign of a soul that knows this world is not what it was meant to be, and that Something, Someone, better is yet to come.I'm too soon old and too late smart, but one thing I've learned is that when you try to pretend the ache isn't there, it just goes underground and comes out sideways. But when you bring it honestly to God, something begins to shift. He can work with honest pain. He's less able to work with a performance. The Psalms are full of this. David didn't write greeting card theology. He wrote things like "How long, O LORD? wilt thou forget me for ever?" (Psalm 13:1). And then, in the very same psalm, he lands on trust. That journey, from honest ache to renewed trust, is not a failure of faith. It's the walk of faith. If you're carrying an ache tonight that just won't let you go, you are in good company. Bring it to the One who knows what it is to say, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful."Let's pray: Father, we come to You with our honest aches tonight, not our polished performances. You already know what's underneath the surface. Meet us there, in that deep place, with Your presence and Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.#Faith #MentalHealth #SoulCare #ChristianLiving #DailyDevotion #HopeInGod #RTTBROS #NightlightBe sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe, it helps get the word out.https://linktr.ee/rttbros

A family moving into an abandoned Wisconsin mansion discovered a human corpse hidden inside the walls — and that was the least terrifying thing that happened to them there.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*IN THIS EPISODE: Was Summerwind in Wisconsin really haunted? No one knows and if they do, they aren't saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. (Agnes And The Time Travelers) *** Tituba proved to be a fantastic orator as she talked her way out of slavery using the fear and mass hysteria of witchcraft that paralyzed the people of Salem. (Tituba And the Salem Witch Trials) *** The discovery of a 10-year-old's body at an ancient Roman site in Italy suggests his family, friends, and neighbors thought he was a vampire – and took measures to make sure he wouldn't return from the grave. (The Unearthing of a Child Vampire) *** Authorities placed Gil Perez in jail as a deserter and for the possibility that he may have been in the service of Satan. In Gil's defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. (Teleportation of a Spanish Soldier) ***
Matthew Weeks was found guilty and hanged for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Today it is said that the ghosts of both of them roam the countryside – but could it be that Matthew's ghost is lamenting because he was innocent of the crime? (The Murder of Charlotte Dymond on Bodmin Moor) *** A building situated right in the middle of London's swankiest and most historical areas, has long been said to be the lair of something not of this earth. (The Bizarre Nameless Thing of Berkley Square) *** “The Jungle Book” - we are all familiar with the story in some way – either from the classic animated Disney film version from 1967, the live action version in 2016, or the original novel by Rudyard Kipling published in 1894. In fact, yet another retelling of the story is coming in 2019 in a film entitled simply, “Mowgli”. But what many don't know is that the character of Mowgli was, in fact, inspired by a real boy who was raised by wild animals. (The Real Life Inspiration for Mowgli) *** Evil stepmothers, jealous of their stepdaughters' beauty are a classic tome in fantastical stories – but Martha Savcoll was no fairy tale. (Brooklyn Murderess) *** Of all the places in the world you would expect to be safe from the paranormal, it would be a church – but that would not be telling the truth when referring to Adams Grove Presbyterian Church in Alabama. 28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,     or who has been his counselor?” 35 “Or who has given a gift to him     that he might be repaid?”36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.1.     Did the sermon successfully depict how strange and surprising God's ways are, compared to the expectations of ancient religions? Could his ways still be strange and surprising to you? Is that disturbing or comforting?2.     The potter became the clay. Does it land for you that Jesus took our place? Happy Sunday! On this last Sunday in March, Palm Sunday, we are culminating our anniversary celebration of six years of the  “And The Church Said” podcast!Dr. Mo has been celebrating six years of God's faithfulness to the work of the podcast! Today, we continue to discuss Dr. Mo's hesitation to do the work of the podcast. She discusses how her hesitation was rooted in social rejection and fear and how she has come to understand her close association with the sufferings of Jesus. Dr. Mo reads from Philippians 3:10 and Luke 22:39-46. She discusses when we anticipate doing the will of God we can experience anxiety and anguish. Especially when we are doing really difficult things. Just like Jesus as He prepared to go to the Cross. Tune in to this episode as we think about how God might be inviting us into fellowship with Him through our sufferings. Information for Dr. Gadson https://www.drmoniquesmithgadson.com/Link to order “Finding Hope in A Dark Place”:https://lexhampress.com/search?query=Finding%20Hope%20in%20a%20Dark%20Place%3A%20Facing%20Loneliness%2C%20Depression%2C%20and%20Anxiety%20with%20the%20Power%20of%20Grace&sortBy=Relevance&limit=30&page=1&ownership=all&geographicAvailability=allhttps://www.amazon.com/Finding-Hope-Dark-Place-Loneliness/dp/1683596358/ref=rvi_sccl_7/138-1785751-1148333?pd_rd_w=decCb&content-id=amzn1.sym.f5690a4d-f2bb-45d9-9d1b-736fee412437&pf_rd_p=f5690a4d-f2bb-45d9-9d1b-736fee412437&pf_rd_r=GMEBCA5ZB54MM98HHN5F&pd_rd_wg=pwctW&pd_rd_r=0cf054c6-aedd-427d-ac2a-563757407228&pd_rd_i=1683596358&psc=1Follow us on social media: https://instagram.com/drmoniquesmithgadson?igshid=1bmt2hei1j6i8Support And The Church Said:Cash App:  https://cash.app/$andthechurchsaid

We welcome back family counselor Erin Cox to talk about how we talk about the immigration raids and ICE detentions taking place in the United States, the children who are being detained, and the fear all children are absorbing from the news, social media, and their communities. We discuss what's happening on the ground in places like Minnesota, Texas, and Portland; why it's making so many of us feel frightened and disoriented; and what we can do as parents whose children are directly impacted—and for those kids who are learning about it online. We discuss how children communicate distress through behavior and play and why empathy and emotional vocabulary are essential tools we can teach our children. Erin explains the importance of co-regulation—how children borrow calm from the adults in their lives—and shares ways parents can care for their own nervous systems so they can show up as a steady presence. While fear may be the point of these tactics, connection, community, and resilience are how we can respond.
