April 26, 2026Today's Reading: John 16:16-22Daily Lectionary: Leviticus 8:1-13, 30-36; Luke 9:1-17“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.” (John 16:20)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.It's Thursday. The Passover is being celebrated. It's a familiar day—an ancient festival. And yet, there's something different about this day. This night. This Passover. Jesus teaches. Prays. Eats. Drinks. This is all familiar. But then Jesus does something new. He gives a New Covenant—a new testament—in his Body and Blood. Not only that, Jesus' words seem to reflect the darkness of this night. Sorrow. Weeping. Lament. Jesus is going away. What does this mean? They don't know, but Jesus knows. Jesus looks at their scared, bewildered faces and knows the suffering that's coming. He knows their fears, uncertainty, and sadness. He knows he is about to endure: jeers, whips, tearing flesh, blood dripping, anguish, pain, and agony. He knows the sorrow that will overwhelm them as they scatter with fear and denial, as the stone is rolled over Jesus' tomb. “You will weep and lament and the world will rejoice.” Jesus is speaking about his death and resurrection. A little while, they would see him no more. Crucified. Dead. Buried. But in a little while, they would see him again. Risen. Glorified. Appearing in the Upper Room. Good Friday sorrow gives way to Easter joy. Anguish gives way to cries of “He is risen!” But Jesus' words aren't only for his disciples. Jesus speaks to you as well. As we live in the “little while” between Jesus' death, resurrection, ascension, and his coming again on the Last Day, life is often full of sorrows, weeping, and lamentation. For you, the baptized Christian, sorrow is not an illusion – it's real. Sometimes all too real. Sometimes it lasts days, weeks, years. Sometimes suffering doesn't go away with the dawn. Sometimes, time doesn't heal all wounds.In this life, sorrow, tears, and lament are real. But so is this: Christ's Gift of joy that no amount of suffering or sorrow can rob you of. Christ's dying and rising for you, bringing his suffering into the midst of yours, taking your suffering and sorrow upon himself, and giving you his crucified and risen joy.So, until the day when Christ returns, when everything sad will come untrue, we live in Jesus' promise: “You will have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Ache That Won't Go Away(Inspired by Larry Crabb's insight on the soul's deep longings)The Ache That Won't Go Away #RTTBROS #Nightlight"My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death." — Matthew 26:38You know, one of the most honest things I've ever heard a Christian counselor say stopped me right in my tracks. Larry Crabb, one of the contributors to the Soul Care Bible, wrote that "beneath the surface of everyone's life, especially the more mature, is an ache that will not go away." He said an aching soul is not evidence of neurosis or spiritual immaturity. It's evidence of realism.I've sat with a lot of people over the years, in hospital rooms, living rooms, and church pews, and I can tell you that is one of the truest things I've ever read. So many people carry a quiet ache inside them and then feel guilty about it, like something is spiritually wrong with them because they can't just "praise it away."Here's what I want you to hear tonight: even Jesus, in the garden of Gethsemane, said, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death." The Son of God sat with His disciples and let them see His anguish. He didn't perform spiritual cheerfulness for anyone. He was honest about the weight He was carrying.What Larry Crabb helped a generation of Christians understand is that the deep ache we feel in our souls is actually a longing for God and for the wholeness He alone can give. It's not a sign of broken faith. It's often a sign of a soul that knows this world is not what it was meant to be, and that Something, Someone, better is yet to come.I'm too soon old and too late smart, but one thing I've learned is that when you try to pretend the ache isn't there, it just goes underground and comes out sideways. But when you bring it honestly to God, something begins to shift. He can work with honest pain. He's less able to work with a performance.The Psalms are full of this. David didn't write greeting card theology. He wrote things like "How long, O LORD? wilt thou forget me for ever?" (Psalm 13:1). And then, in the very same psalm, he lands on trust. That journey, from honest ache to renewed trust, is not a failure of faith. It's the walk of faith.If you're carrying an ache tonight that just won't let you go, you are in good company. Bring it to the One who knows what it is to say, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful."Let's pray: Father, we come to You with our honest aches tonight, not our polished performances. You already know what's underneath the surface. Meet us there, in that deep place, with Your presence and Your peace. Saying, ‘I shall not go and see this sight', filled with fury, the battle-worthy Nannan refused to go to the battlefield and pay his respects. Since without any grace, he avoided coming there, the many women of the Velir clan, filled with immense anguish, tore at their fresh new flower garlands and created an uproar. At that time, Akuthai, with his mighty army, capable of winning over enmity, came there and ended their sorrow. Akin to that, in the manner of a huge flood, caused by a heavy downpour that breaks a bank of salt and gushes over, breaking the bounds of her modesty, which was restraining her, she had come here and rendered her grace unto me. May she live long, that dark-skinned maiden, having delicate, exquisite tresses that waft with the scent of flowers in the rain that bloom in the fertile Kolli hills, adorned with many jackfruit trees, ruled by King Ori!” True to his title of historian poet, Paranar stitches a series of significant events from the Sangam era. The man starts by talking about the nature of a Velir chieftain called Eyinan, describing how he would render elephants to bards, who sang about his peaks. Epitome of generosity indeed. Next, he takes us to another incident in this chief’s life, to the Paazhi battlefield, where Eyinan is waging war against a King named Mignili. Unfortunately, Eyinan is covered in wounds and falls dead on that battlefield. Now a curious thing happens! It appears as if this chief was not only kind to those bards but also to birds! For when he falls dead in the middle of the day, as the sun scorches above, the birds wishing to protect his form from the harsh rays join together and spread their wings, forming a canopy high above. What a moving sight! A testimony to the man’s greatness, no doubt! Anyone would celebrate this, however there was a Velir King named Nannan, who refused to come to the battlefield, possibly, out of envy, and see this rare sight and honour his clansman. Heartbroken because of this attitude of one of their own, the women of the clan beat their chests, tore their garlands and cried out in pain. At that moment, another clansman Akuthai rose to their aid and ended their sorrow, the man describes. Like how Akuthai ended the misery of those anguished Velir women, the lady, who has tresses as fragrant as the flowers in another king Ori’s domain of Kolli hills, had come to the man, breaking the bounds of her modesty, like how a flood would shatter and overcome a wall of salt, and she had ended the anguish of yearning with her grace, the man connects and concludes. At the core, it’s just a man in the throes of young love, exulting in the knowledge that his love was reciprocated. How seamlessly the verse stitches together this subtle, intimate moment and an uproarious, historic event, and weaves a tapestry, rich in both inner and outer life!

We welcome back family counselor Erin Cox to talk about how we talk about the immigration raids and ICE detentions taking place in the United States, the children who are being detained, and the fear all children are absorbing from the news, social media, and their communities. We discuss what's happening on the ground in places like Minnesota, Texas, and Portland; why it's making so many of us feel frightened and disoriented; and what we can do as parents whose children are directly impacted—and for those kids who are learning about it online. We discuss how children communicate distress through behavior and play and why empathy and emotional vocabulary are essential tools we can teach our children. Erin explains the importance of co-regulation—how children borrow calm from the adults in their lives—and shares ways parents can care for their own nervous systems so they can show up as a steady presence. While fear may be the point of these tactics, connection, community, and resilience are how we can respond.
