Lessons From The Seven Churches P.2 Revelation 2:8-11
Sermons from our Sunday Services at St.Peter's Free Church, Dundee
Dr. Roger L. Smith discusses the importance of anchoring oneself to truth and scripture, especially during difficult times. Choices made during hardship reveal one's true training, be it worldly or Godly. Conflicts arise when worldly training clashes with Christian hope, leading to fear and hindering faithfulness. God leads people through trials, not around them, requiring endurance. Dr. Smith emphasizes the relevance of Jesus' message to the Church in Smyrna: "Do not fear." Fear is a tool used by the enemy to deter people from following God. The church faced tribulation and poverty for their faith, choosing faithfulness over compromise. They were also facing persecutions and attacks. Dr. Smith challenges listeners to evaluate their own faith and willingness to endure hardship for Christ.

Who or what are you living for? In Revelation 2:8-11 we discover a letter Jesus wrote to a church living under immense pressure that reveals how to live for Christ for a lifetime.
Smyrna was a beautiful city that was very much into emperor worship. It had a street called Golden with a temple to Zeus on one end and Cybele on the other. Christians were excluded from guilds because of their refusal to worship the gods. That meant they were in poverty but Jesus said they were rich. One of them, Antipas, was martyred for his faithful witness. What we see as wealth is shaped by our worldview. There was no reprimand, only a warning of more persecution to come and an encouragement to stay faithful.

The 7 Churches of Revelation Part 4: Revelation 2:8-11: “Smyrna: Faithful under Pressure.” How to stay true to Jesus even when your world is falling apart. How to stay true to Jesus when your world is falling apart: 1. Remember that you are following the One who defeated death and made the way for life (v. 8). 2. Learn to see the world through God’s eyes (v. 9).  3. Replace fear with faithfulness, knowing that God has a better plan in mind (v. 10). 4. Overcome every fear with the promise of a better and lasting life beyond this present short life (v. 11). Review: Smyrna, Faithful under pressure: How to stay true to Jesus when your world is falling apart: 1. Remember that you are following the One who defeated death and made the way for life (v. 8) 2. Learn to see the world through God’s eyes (v. 9). 3. Replace fear with faithfulness, knowing that God has a better plan in mind (v. 10). 4. Overcome every fear with the promise of a better and lasting life beyond this present short life (v. 11). The Big Idea: Be faithful instead of fearful as you look forward to a far better and lasting life. Action Steps: ¬ Don’t despair when your world is falling apart, but Jesus is the one who is holding your heart! ¬ Learn to see the world from God’s perspective. You are actually rich and doing amazing even when the world doesn’t see it that way! ¬ Replace fear with faith which leads to faithfulness! Suffering is just part of our journey here on earth, but one day, suffering will turn into celebrating!
