Armed for Victory – The Sword of the Spirit In this concluding episode of For Zion's Sake, hosts Shelley and June Volk wrap up their weekly theme on the link between the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Moving from foundational principles to practical spiritual warfare, they break down the famous "Armor of God" passage to show how believers can actively live out a victorious life. Key Takeaways The Ultimate Combination (Ephesians 6:17): The episode anchors itself on the final piece of spiritual armor: “the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Shelley notes that if any single scripture perfectly bridges the Holy Spirit with the written Word, it is this one. The Armor as a Way of Life: June reframes how we look at Ephesians 6. Rather than viewing the armor as a physical set of clothes you put on and take off each morning, she explains that it represents an internal, permanent lifestyle. The Helmet of Salvation protects our mindset and feelings. The Breastplate of Righteousness means living inside Christ's righteousness. The Shield of Faith isn't a physical block we hold up, but Christ Himself walking ahead of us to quench the enemy's attacks. God as the Rear Guard: June highlights a unique structural detail about the Armor of God: it offers absolutely no protection for a person's back. However, she reassures listeners that God explicitly promises in His Word to step in and be the believer's "rear guard" against ambush. A Living, Piercing Tool (Hebrews 4:12): The hosts connect the "sword of the Spirit" to Hebrews 4:12, emphasizing that the Word of God is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. Shelley shares how this sword cuts out doubt, fear, and apprehensions to bring people to salvation, while continuing to divide soul and spirit for daily guidance. The Pattern of "It Is Written": To demonstrate the proper use of the Sword, Shelley points to Jesus being led into the wilderness to be tempted. Jesus defeated Satan not with human arguments, but by repeatedly declaring, "It is written." June adds that because the devil tries to twist scripture out of context, believers absolutely require the Holy Spirit's discernment to know exactly how and when to apply the Word. The Living Connection Between Word and Spirit In this episode of For Zion's Sake, hosts Shelley and June Volk—Jewish believers dedicated to seeing Jew and Gentile become one in faith—explore the deep, structural connection between the written Word of God and the active presence of the Holy Spirit. Key Takeaways The Anchor Verse (John 6:63): The episode centers on Jesus' declaration: "It is the Spirit who gives life... the words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life." The hosts emphasize that without the Holy Spirit, scripture remains a dead letter; with the Spirit, it becomes an active, life-giving force. The Spirit as God’s Heart-Revealer: Reading from 1 Corinthians 2, June points out that just as no one knows a person's inner motives except their own spirit, no one can truly know the thoughts and heart of God except the Spirit of God. She notes that born-again believers have this "Spirit of truth" living within them to guide daily life and bring personal transformation. Demonstration of Power (1 Corinthians 2:1–5): Shelley highlights the Apostle Paul’s approach to preaching, noting that Paul didn't rely on superior human intellect or persuasive words of wisdom. Instead, his message was a direct demonstration of the Spirit and power, ensuring that listeners' faith rested on God rather than human philosophy. A Multi-Generational Promise: Turning to the Old Testament covenant in Isaiah 59:21, the hosts discuss God's promise that His Spirit and Words will not depart from His people or their descendants. June shares a personal family testimony, tracing how this promise came alive in their own lives—from their radical conversion in 1976 to seeing their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren actively living out the faith. The Spirit Precedes the Word: Shelley looks back at Genesis 1 to show a divine pattern: the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters before God spoke light into existence. He connects this to the New Testament (Acts 4 and Acts 13), where believers were first filled with the Holy Spirit before they could speak the Word of God with boldness. Shelly has served the body of Christ as a Pastor for over 35 years. He is a bible teacher and conference speaker on the subjects of The Kingdom of God, The Mystery of Israel & The Church and for God’s people to be prepared in their hearts for the end of this age. https://shellyandjunevolk.com/Support the show: https://shellyandjunevolk.com/product/partner-with-us-psalm-127-fund/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"For Zion's Sake: A Catholic Appeal in Support of Israel" is a passionate declaration by faithful Catholics countering the rising anti-Israel sentiment within Catholic circles, especially since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. It rejects both political delegitimization of Israel (accusations of apartheid, colonialism, and genocide) and theological supersessionism that denies the Jewish people's ongoing covenant and connection to the Land. Drawing on Scripture, Nostra Aetate, and post-conciliar teaching, it affirms God's irrevocable promises to Israel, supports the legitimacy of the Jewish State, and calls Catholics to reject anti-Zionism as a form of antisemitism while upholding moral standards and concern for Palestinian suffering. It urges active solidarity with Israel as integral to authentic Catholic faith. Podcast Episode Summary: The Inseparable Word and Spirit In this episode of For Zion's Sake, hosts Shelley and June Volk—Jewish believers dedicated to seeing Jew and Gentile become one in faith—explore why the written Word of God requires the active presence of the Holy Spirit to truly transform human lives. Key Takeaways The Core Thesis (John 6:63): The episode anchors itself on the words of Jesus: "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life." The hosts emphasize that studying scripture through purely intellectual or human wisdom renders it a "dead work." Reading "Between the Lines": Referencing the late Christian minister Richard Wurmbrand, the hosts discuss how the richness of scripture is found by letting the Holy Spirit teach you, noting that "there's more written between the lines than in the lines themselves." The Blueprint of Psalm 119: The discussion highlights verses from Psalm 119 to demonstrate how scripture serves as a pure standard of living, a source of strength during grief, and a lamp to guide one's path. The Meaning of Inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16): Shelley breaks down the Greek root words for scriptural inspiration: Theo (God) and peneo (breathed). Because the scriptures are literally "God-breathed" by the Spirit, a person needs that same Holy Spirit breathing on them to truly comprehend the text. Old vs. New Covenant Access: The hosts contrast the Old Testament—where the Holy Spirit was historically given to specific individuals like King David or the prophet Daniel—with the New Covenant, where God pours out His Spirit upon all flesh, making divine enlightenment available to every believer. I don't have time for rest! My schedule is too full. I'm too stressed out. I will fall too far behind if I take a break.Do any of these sound familiar to you? Rest is essential for our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. It's so important that God gave us an example of rest in the creation story at the beginning of the Bible. Yet, it's so easy to let this basic human need fall by the wayside when life gets busy. We've been wanting to touch on the topic of rest for a while, and we can't think of a more fitting pair of guests for this conversation than our good friends, Scott and Myndee Anderson. Natural vs. Spiritual Discernment: Drawing from 1 Corinthians 2:10–14, the discussion highlights the divide between the "natural man" and the "spiritual man." The hosts explain that spiritual truths appear as absolute foolishness to human intellect alone because they must be spiritually appraised. The Transition from Zeal to Power: The hosts look back at Jesus' original disciples, noting that before Pentecost (Shavuot), their religious zeal was limited by their own human interpretations. It was only after they waited in the upper room and were baptized in fire and the Holy Spirit that they were equipped to turn the world upside down. A Call to Unity and Action: June emphasizes that while differing doctrines and denominations divide the modern body of Christ, a shared, Spirit-led understanding brings believers into true oneness. The episode closes with an invitation for listeners to ask the Messiah into their hearts, purchase a Bible, and begin a spiritual adventure. I came back from a yoga teacher training in India with a new friend and a simple theory: adults bond through sweat or sake. YUYU and I talk about why that is, what makes some people just click, and how the Japanese concept of goen (ご縁 — a fated connection) quietly takes the pressure off relationships. We also get into why Japanese people sometimes go cold out of nowhere and a way of thinking about it that actually helps.
The Word and The Spirit In this episode of For Zion's Sake, hosts Shelley and June Volk—Jewish believers dedicated to seeing Jew and Gentile become one in faith—dive into a deep discussion on the vital, inseparable connection between the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Key Takeaways The Theme (John 6:63): The episode anchors itself on the words of Jesus: "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life." The hosts emphasize that while memorizing or analyzing scripture is important, the words cannot truly transform a life without the active operation of the Holy Spirit. The Blueprint of Psalm 119: Shelley highlights several verses from Psalm 119 (the longest chapter in the Bible) to demonstrate how scripture serves as a pure standard of living, a source of strength during grief, and a lamp to guide one's path. Daniel's Identifying Factor: Turning to the Old Testament, the hosts look at the story of Daniel and King Belshazzar in Daniel 5. They note that Daniel's defining characteristic—even recognized by a pagan court—was that the "Spirit of the Holy God" was in him, granting him divine insight that natural minds could not achieve. The Transition from Old to New Covenant: June discusses how the Holy Spirit was historically given to specific prophets or leaders in the Old Testament. However, following Jesus' sacrifice, the prophecy that God would "pour out His Spirit upon all flesh" has been fulfilled, making this divine enlightenment available to every believer who is born again. The True Meaning of Inspiration (2 Timothy 3:16): The hosts break down the Greek root words for scriptural inspiration: Theo (God) and peneo (breathed). They explain that because the Word is literally "God-breathed," it acts as a living seed in the human soul that requires a spiritual nature to germinate and grow. Throughout history, Jesus faced immense persecution. He endured spitting, mockery, brutal beatings, and unthinkable torture, ultimately facing betrayal from those closest to him. In his teachings, he warned his disciples of the challenges they would encounter, foretelling that they would be reviled and hated for their allegiance to him. This case leads us to a poignant question: “Are you currently experiencing the trials of walking the narrow path—the path that God has laid out for us, the path of righteousness? It certainly isn't an easy journey, is it?” In this episode titled “Case: You Shall Be Hated for My Name's Sake,” I delve into the somber reality faced by a believer in our Lord Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. Through the lens of a heart deeply enshrouded in evil, I will explore the case of a nonbelieving criminal, Jeffrey Maxwell. This case will shed light on the harsh treatment believers often endure and serve as a powerful reminder of the struggles that come with unwavering faith in a world that can be so hostile to it. Join me as I uncover the deeper implications of faith amid adversity and reflect on the strength required to persevere along this challenging journey. Episode 189. After six years of audio-only podcasting, Sake Revolution is officially on video — and we're celebrating by doing something dangerous... dangerously delicious, that is! John and Timothy are trying their hand at a 15-million-view viral sake challenge out of Japan: dipping castella cake into a can of Kikusui Funaguchi. A sake shop called Kurand started it. Kikusui's own social media team escalated it. And now America's first sake podcast is here to find out if castella cake is really and truly sponge worthy. Along the way, we dig into what castella cake actually is (it's not pound cake, we promise), why Funaguchi's 19% ABV is sneakier than it looks, and, critically, whether you should dunk or dribble. We naturally live a very circumstantial life. We see the world and even Christ through the lens of circumstance. How would our lives change if we could learn to see circumstance through the lens of Christ? Like Paul we might be able to say in truth "To live is Christ, to die is gain" To support the work and worship of Redeemer, subscribe to our channel and consider supporting us by giving a tax deductible gift at the link below. https://Redeemer-Church-Rockwall-517189.churchcenter.com/giving
What changes when Krishna becomes the center instead of ourselves? In this episode of For Soul's Sake, we explore a foundational aspect of bhakti: not just what we see… but from where we are seeing.“Do not try to see Krishna. Philippians 2:1-4
The Apostle Paul called himself “the servant of Christ”, but in his day there really were no servants, only slaves. The Greek word Paul used is better translated “under rower”, the slave who occupied the lowest position in the galley of a ship powered by the sweat of men. 1 Peter 2:11-2511Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.13Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.18Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Sake is not a beverage we often cover on the podcast, but when we had the chance to talk to one of the great sake makers in the world, we jumped at the chance. In this episode we introduce you to Jun Kono of Sohomare, one of the world's premier sake makers, and Leo Lê Sommelier of the great Kappo Sono in New York City and Momoya. What a treat to meet these two leaders in their respective businesses, and get to know them. As you know, sake is often called “rice wine,” but that is not the best description of it because the brewing process is so different and complex. And while many sake makers are trying to chase more accessible and fresher versions of sake, Sohomare is focused on making deep, complex, and elegant sake that is made to be eaten with food. We know you will learn a ton, like we did, in this conversation, and come away with a new appreciation for one of the most significant alcoholic beverages in human history. This episode explores the fascinating intersection of culture, spirituality, and sleep. Dr. Yishan welcomes Dr. Bruce D. Forman, PhD, a clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral sleep medicine and the author of "For God's Sake, Go to Sleep" — a book that bridges Jewish wisdom and modern sleep science. Together, we discuss why sleep is biological but insomnia is cultural, how different societies around the world view nighttime wakefulness, and why the "monkey mind" may be the biggest obstacle standing between you and a good night's sleep. Dr. Forman also shares how meditation, prayer, and the practice of letting go can help calm the nervous system and create the conditions for restful sleep.
