Join me in this episode as I interview Stuart Palley who is a photographer based in Southern California specializing in environmental, art, editorial, and commercial/corporate subjects. In his recent work on wildfires, "Into The Inferno": Stuart recalls how he went from learning to be safe on the fire line to a fire-savvy documentarian of wildfire and climate change. He covers some of California's largest, most destructive, and deadliest fires between 2012 and 2020, lugging his gear from the Wine Country Fire Siege to the Thomas Fire and ultimately to the Woolsey Fire in Malibu. He shows how, in a relatively short period, fire season in California has grown into a perpetual crisis, requiring billions of dollars and thousands of firefighters each year. In November 2018, a series of violent fires throttled California and its surrounding landscape. Outside of Los Angeles, the Woolsey Fire resulted in a three casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents. The Camp Fire, decimated the town of Paradise in Northern California, a small retirement community, which killed at least 85 people and cause 16 billion dollars in damage. It is one of the deadliest natural and social disasters on U.S. soil. This episode of Monument Lab our guest is Photographer Stuart Palley, a photographer of the wildfires. We found Palley through his Instagram page, where during the Woolsey and Camp Fires, he shared daily updates from the frontlines, alongside firefighters, and later, search and rescue teams. Palley is creating a record of wildfires and climate change, tracing how hotter, drier conditions on the ground increase the risk of fire. Palley has photographed for National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and in his own book Terra Flamma, a five-year visual inventory of the wildfires. Over the course of 5 years he documented nearly 100 wildfires in his home state of California. Palley is currently working on a book of fiction writing, and continues to document the wildfire crisis. Stuart Palley joins the podcast to talk about how he went from a degree in business and finance to chasing some of the biggest wildfires in the history of California and creating beautiful images in the midst of chaos with his project and book "Terra Flamma". Over the last couple of years Stuart has received a lot of press and recognition for his outstanding wildfire work and we sit down to talk about how it all got started and his plans for the future. Although Stuart always loved photography, he earned an undergrad degree in business and finance and began interning in the bank world during the tough financial times of 2009. It was then that he would revaluate what he wanted from life and make the switch to a photojournalism post graduate education in Missouri. During that time, on trips home to California, he became very interested in what was happening with the climate, and the fires that seemed to be increasing in intensity in his home state. Combining his love for nighttime imagery and environmental awareness, Stuart created a body of work around wildfires that would bring awareness to him as a photographer. During our conversation we talk about what inspired him to start taking long exposure images of wildfires early on in his career, the specific challenges and dangers of shooting wildfires, and the advice to those who think they want to be a part of it.
