He worked and flew all over the world for the Central Intelligence Agency and various special operations units. He appeared twice on the podcast. Although these interviews were recorded several years ago, Lee and Justin stayed in touch on at least a monthly basis, and he's been a regular listener since that time. Today on Eyes Wide Open, we sit down with Dr. Shivani Gupta to decode the "Inflammation Code" and reveal how ancient Ayurvedic wisdom can put out the fire of chronic disease. In this deep dive, we bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science to uncover the "Inflammation Code."  We discuss how childhood experiences shape our health journeys, the physiological impact of being out of sync with nature's clock, and the importance of advocating for root-cause medicine in a world dominated by quick-fix pharmaceuticals.  Dr. Shivani shares practical, daily Ayurvedic rituals, from tongue scraping to seasonal eating, that empower you to take control of your vitality and navigate the complex supplement industry with transparency and confidence. Key Takeaways & Revelations The Circadian Clock: Why aligning your meal timing and sleep rituals with your circadian rhythm is the foundation of metabolic health. In the final episode of 2025, Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo reflect on a turbulent year for technology, capital markets, and Canadian innovation, while looking ahead to the forces that will shape 2026. The conversation opens with Canada's largest private startup round of the year, a $1.76B raise by Toronto based HydroStar Energy Storage, and uses it as a springboard to examine the AI shakeout now underway. John describes the sector as entering a “forest fire” phase, where overfunded and undifferentiated companies fall away, creating room for stronger, more durable players to emerge.Matt and John then explore whether 2026 will finally mark a return of major tech IPOs, or whether the regulatory burden and liquidity options in private markets will keep companies like SpaceX, Stripe, and OpenAI on the sidelines. Despite interest rate cuts, the hosts argue capital markets remain constrained and selective. The discussion shifts to Canada's strategic priorities, including a growing focus on defense technology viewed through a dual use lens of sovereignty and innovation. As talent emigration rises and domestic risk capital lags, the episode closes with a clear warning. Without addressing capital access, taxation, and long term retention, Canada risks becoming a leaky boat, losing its builders and economic future to the United States. The 2025 AI Shakeout & The 2026 Forest Fire (02:06)John predicts a period of simultaneous “carnage” and opportunity in AI, comparing the market to a forest fire that burns the weak but creates fertile ground for the strong. They debate which companies are the true “sequoias” built to last.IPO or Bust? The Reluctant March to Public Markets (04:57)With rumors swirling around SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI, Matt and John explore why 2026 might see major IPOs. John argues that many are driven not by ambition, but by investor pressure for liquidity, calling it a “panacea” for fund timelines rather than a strategic goal.Rate Cuts & Stagnation: Why Cheap Money Isn't Fixing Canada's Economy (07:28)Despite multiple rate cuts in 2025, investment activity remains sluggish. The hosts diagnose a holding pattern for Canada's economy, where further cuts risk devaluing the dollar without spurring meaningful productivity gains.Bullets, Bombs, and Blockchain: Canada's New Defense Tech Mandate (08:17)Matt highlights new government funds for defense tech. John reframes the spending as critical for “physical sovereignty” in a tech-driven Cold War, emphasizing the “dual-use” nature of investments in AI, quantum, and satellite technology.Predictions for 2026: Agents, Physical AI, and Nuclear's Comeback (11:23)The hosts share their forecasts: Matt bets on AI “agents” automating complex workflows and tangible ROI finally hitting enterprise software. John is bullish on “AI meeting the physical world” through robotics and autonomous machinery, and predicts a major comeback for nuclear energy.Canada's Leaky Boat: The Capital and Talent Retention Crisis (18:32)Addressing record-high emigration, John identifies the twin failures crippling Canadian innovation: a lack of domestic risk capital at scale and an uncompetitive personal tax regime. He warns that without urgent fixes in the next budget, the brain drain will accelerate, with U.S. capital actively pulling companies and founders south.Connect with John Ruffolo on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/joruffoloConnect with Matt Cohen on LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/matt-cohen1Visit the Ripple Ventures website: https://www.rippleventures.com/ This is a public episode. The European Union has 160 million hectares of forests, which corresponds to 40 per cent of its territory. Forests are an economic and ecological wealth that are directly impacted by many threats: global warming, parasites, diseases, storms and of course, fires. It is impossible to ignore the devastating fires that ravage the forests of southern Europe every summer. How are European forests doing today? How can they be protected and repaired? In the 63rd episode of Food for Europe we take you to Portugal, where Jorge Brito, executive secretary of the Coimbra region, looks back at the measures put in place to regenerate the forest ravaged by deadly fires in 2017 and ensure the protection of the population. Pierre Hermans, forester and founder of the private firm Sylva Nova, explains how he integrates global warming into the solutions he offers to his clients across Europe. Finally, Jérémie Crespin, policy officer at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, a specialist in forests, discusses the state of European forests and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy to prevent forest fires.

North Star is on vacation this week, so we're rerunning some of our favourite episodes. This one originally aired August 7, 2024. Sharon Chodirker and Chaim Bell consider themselves lucky: they were among the tens of thousands of tourists and residents in Jasper who were evacuated from the forest fires that devoured a third of the buildings in the iconic Rocky Mountain resort town on July 24, 2024. The Toronto couple, who were on a hiking trip, managed to escape Jasper while smoke and ash rained down on their rental car. When they reached a safe spot across the border in British Columbia, they slept in their vehicle and dined on kosher snacks they'd stored in their portable cooler. Two days after their frightening journey, flames up to 100 metres high swept right through where their hotel stood, destroying several buildings. Now they're sharing their survival story from the safety of their Toronto home, while the town of Jasper remains off-limits except for emergency crews—and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who visited on Aug. 5, 2024. On this episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from the Toronto couple personally, as well as Rabbi Dovid Pinson of Canmore, who runs the new Chabad community centre outside Banff and hosted the evacuees. We'll also hear from Heidi Coleman, the head of the Jewish community in Kamloops, B.C., who felt like she was starring in the musical Come From Away when she helped a busload of stranded Jasperites in her city. AROUND 6 A.M. on the morning of Sept. 9, 1942, Forest Service lookout Howard Gardner heard the sound of an approaching airplane. Peering out into the South Coast pre-dawn gloaming light, Gardner made out a small seaplane, heading toward him, flying low, circling. Showtime! This was what Gardner was here for, bundled up in the little Forest Service firewatch lookout shack atop Mt. Emily. Nine months into the Second World War, Gardner's duties had expanded a bit from what they had been a year before. Now he was looking not only for smoke from forest fires, but for enemy airplanes. And right then, that's exactly what he was looking at. (Brookings, Curry County; 1940s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2402a-0907b.glovebox-bomb-031.634.html)

Pennsylvania’s Republican senators, joined by five Democrats, are trying to ban transgender athletes from participating in school or collegiate sports. The Senate - after 90 minutes of heated debate - voted to pass the bill despite indications it will not be picked up in the House. Pennsylvania House Democrats are planting the seed for a recreational marijuana program. The adult-use bill passed out of committee by a narrow 14 to 12 vote. A story on the gunfire which broke out at a Donald Trump rally in western Pennsylvania last summer is the recipient of journalism's top award. Two hospital systems that serve central Pa. have indicated they will no longer offer gender-affirming care to children and teens after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January. Penn State Health and UPMC said they will comply with the executive order that said any health systems that provide gender-affirming care for children under 19 years old would lose federal funding. In response to the February shooting at York's UPMC Memorial Hospital, the state House of Representatives has passed a bill intended to curb workplace violence in healthcare facilities. Two weeks after they began, a pair of wildfires in Michaux State Forest are considered fully extinguished.
