Peering out into the South Coast pre-dawn gloaming light, Gardner made out a small seaplane, heading toward him, flying low, circling. Showtime! This was what Gardner was here for, bundled up in the little Forest Service firewatch lookout shack atop Mt. Emily. Nine months into the Second World War, Gardner's duties had expanded a bit from what they had been a year before. Now he was looking not only for smoke from forest fires, but for enemy airplanes. The recent fires in Southern California are being estimated as the most costly natural disaster ever - at $250 billion so far. One group says they were caused and worsened by Climate Change. Another says Directed Energy Weapons. Disagree with either, or ask for proof, and condemnation is often the response. Other times evidence is produced: a blue VW bus and trash cans, or a fire chart of increasing wildfires and burned acres. In both cases, however, context is not provided. For every blue trash can left standing, hundreds more were burned. For every increase in fires or acres burned there was also a previous decrease that allowed for a perceived increase - such data is also selective, cutting out anything prior to 1983. In hindsight, it's clear that a century of suppressing wildfires probably hasn't made us safer in the U.S. West. But knowing what doesn't work isn't the same as knowing what does. So what do we do?

A conversation with an Adirondack Forest Ranger who's serving as a crew chief to fight the wildfire in Orange County. Also: For the first time, Cape Vincent's only grocery is closing for the winter, leaving a gap for the local food pantry and people in the community who can't drive.

Hugh Kinsella Cunningham travelled with them to the Upemba National Park.Singapore has a zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs, and is one of only a few countries that continues to execute people convicted of drug trafficking. For those caught using illicit narcotics, the punishments can also be severe.
