There's been a lot of postulating about whether the firing of some 4400 (and counting) Forest Service and National Park employees on Friday will have an impact on fire operations this summer. We spoke with Riva Duncan, who has decades of experience in fire operations for the US Forest Service (before retiring with the agency), and her answer couldn't be more clear: yes, these losses in capacity are already having an impact on our ability to suppress wildfires this summer. Riva is vice president of Grassroots Wildland Firefighters, which advocates and provides a voice for the wildfire workforce. If you fight fire long enough you will know someone diagnosed with cancer and for me it's been several friends diagnosed with aggressive cancer. I lost one friend to cancer and we had just jumped a fire together a few months prior. If Wildland Firefighters receive better health screenings these cancers will be caught at a manageable stage and treatment will be more successful. Welcome to the first part of our six-episode series all about the Southwest, sponsored by the Southwest Fire Science Consortium! In this episode, which is serving as an introduction to the series, we spoke with Mary Stuever, who is the Chama District Forester for New Mexico State Forestry. Mary has a breadth of experience across disciplines in the fire world, which is well-reflected in our conversation. She's worked in suppression, prevention, fire ecology, community education, post-fire support and public information, among other roles in her long career in fire. As such, we touched on everything from her background in suppression (and subsequent health problems from smoke exposure) to her time providing post-fire community support for the folks in Mora, NM, which was devastated by the 2022 Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire. Mora was not only impacted by the fire itself, but also by subsequent flooding and debris flows that destroyed wells, choked out acequias (critical agricultural waterways) and destroyed untold homes, properties and livelihoods. Mary reflected on the situation she found herself in in such a devastating post-fire environment, including what was needed and opportunities she saw for helping other communities prepare for similar situations. She also gave us a quick Southwest Fire Ecology 101 lesson, and was all around a great guest to chat about the huge diversity of wildfire issues facing the Southwest right now. Most of the topics we spoke to will be elaborated on in greater detail in upcoming episodes, so we hope you'll stick around and listen in as we release more episodes of this series over the next six weeks. For more information on post-fire impacts in Mora, check out some of the fantastic reporting  Patrick Lohmann of Source NM did both during and after the fire. For more information about our sponsor for this series, the Southwest Fire Science Consortium, check out their website, which is chock-full of resources related to Southwest fire ecology, research, management and communications. Timestamps: 08:55 - Role Of Fire In The Landscape10:10 - Health Issues in Wildland Firefighting12:13 - Basing Operational Decisions On Smoke Exposure14:18 - Fire Ecology of the Southwest 10123:22 - Intersecting Cultures And Fire Management in the Southwest25:34 - Ecosystem-Specific Challenges and Different Tactics For Different Landscapes27:51 - Mary's Experience Providing Post-Fire Support In Mora, NM (Following Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak)36:29 - Post-Fire Recommendations For The Southwest40:49 - Utilizing Art And Theater For Fire Education44:03 - Bringing Community Members In As Partners

Life with Fire Podcast, Mystery Ranch Backpacks and the American Wildfire Experience (AWE) have joined forces to bring you this episode with Junior Lazaro—a wildland firefighter who received a Backbone Scholarship from AWE to share his experiences of fire through the Mystery Ranch Backbone Series and Life with Fire Podcast. Junior is a young wildland firefighter who shared his experiences of working in fire in his third season on a BLM handcrew out of eastern Oregon. In this episode, he spoke to some of his challenges and triumphs in pursuing wildland firefighting, and spoke especially to the role his father had in inspiring him to pursue this job. We appreciate both AWE's and Mystery Ranch's commitment to sharing the experiences of those working on the fireline, especially those from communities often underrepresented in content/media around wildland fire. This episode is the first of two that center the operational experiences of folks whose perspectives are not well represented in wildfire media.  Need a gift for the outdoorsperson in your life? For mountain bikers, day hikers, travelers and festival lovers, I recommend the MR Hip Monkey.  It's almost too spacious—I always end up packing way more in it than I end up needing, but you never know when you're gonna need an extra layer or that second bag of gummy bears. For folks who love a good overnight ski trip, I can't recommend the Gallatin Peak 40 Liter pack enough. When discussing or covering wildfire situations, most people and media outlets focus more on their destruction rather than the humanity behind it. In this episode, Brandon Dunham sits down with Gabriel Kirkpatrick Mann to discuss the making of his cinematic masterpiece documentary "Hotshot," which tells the story of some of the most elite, the most hardened, and the most skilled men and women on the fireline. He talks about the movie's six-year filming process, which involved catching firefighters in action and getting in the middle of the most dangerous wildfire areas. He explains how the documentary can help reshape public perception about wildfire, shifting the focus to firefighters' pay and experiences. It's getting hotter outside, and that traditionally signals the start of wildland fire season in the U.S.Nowadays, of course, there's no real “season” when wildland fires burn. The season can be all year long in some parts of the country. We won't argue about the reasons why—suffice it to say, wildland fires are growing bigger and more frequent than in the past. And, as residents of the northeast U.S. can attest, they are starting to burn in less fire-prone regions. With that in mind, and considering that this month is the 10th anniversary of the loss of the Granite Mountain Hotshots in Arizona, we're talking wildland fires. This time, it's a sort of primer on decision-making for those fighting fires in the backcountry. And some lessons learned from a guest who's familiar to those who have listened to Code 3 for a while.Chad Costa is Assistant Fire Chief for the city of Petaluma, California. What can life after wildland firefighting look like? With the issues facing wildland firefighters these days (including but not limited to: abysmal pay, nonexistent benefits and perpetually being let down by elected officials who suggest they might actually do something about it etc) many in this essential but overworked workforce are likely considering that question themselves. After asking himself that question for years, today's guest Luke Mayfield finally got his answer in 2019, when he left his job as a hotshot captain to see what life outside of operational fire was all about. He now works as the fire program director at Mystery Ranch Backpacks, and is still very much involved the fire community—both through his policy work at Grassroots Wildland Firefighters and as an emergency fill-in for hotshot crews for the last four summers. He's also spent some time this spring talking to hotshot crews about mental health and general wellness during the fire season, which are topics that he's well-versed in after 18 years in fire. This episode isn't just for the firefighters out there, though. It's increasingly important that folks outside of the fire community better understand the challenges firefighters are facing, and take advantage of advocacy opportunities at the state and federal level. Much of those opportunities for advocacy, in fact, are rooted in Luke's work with Grassroots Wildland Firefighters.Luke was a founding member of Grassroots back in 2019 after recognizing a need for more lobbying power/legislative presence on the part of the wildland fire community, which had historically been left out of the conversation at the policy level and, thus, often in the media and greater public consciousness. If you're looking for a way to support the wildland firefighters in your life or community, supporting the work of Grassroots is a great place to start.Huge thanks to Luke for coming on the show, and an equally huge thanks to Mystery Ranch Backpacks for supporting Life with Fire over the years. On today's episode we will be discussing Wildland Firefighter Pay Parity, Classification, Mental Health Issues, and much more...The wildland firefighting workforce is currently facing a number of challenges, and these issues are the focus of The Anchor Point Podcast Episode 116. The guest on the show today is Grant Beebe, Assistant Director of BLM Fire and Aviation, and the conversation centers around current concerns regarding wildland firefighter pay parity, classification, and mental health issues. One of the primary issues facing wildland firefighters is pay and retention. With the expiration of the BIL pay and benefits supplement in October, many fear that they will be back to the pay schedules and rates that existed before the work of the Grassroots Wildland Firefighters and NFFE. Grant acknowledges the uncertainty and discusses the potential personnel crisis that could result from a lack of equitable pay, benefits, and classification.Beebe believes that pay parity is crucial for the men and women who are the boots on the ground. In his opinion, an equitable pay rate needs to be established, and there should be efforts to retain personnel who are vital to the day-to-day operations of wildland fire ops, including dispatchers, WG, militia, logistics, and secondary fire personnel.Beebe explains that there are plans to address these issues, including temp buyback, insurance and benefits, and classification. However, the question of how to fix these problems remains. Beebe suggests that it may require legislative action.Another issue affecting the wildland firefighting workforce is mental health. Beebe acknowledges that there is a mental health crisis within the ranks and discusses efforts to address the issue. He notes that the BIL provided funding for the development and improvement of mental health programs across all agencies. Beebe discusses some of the programs that are being improved with this funding and notes that there are other mental health programs on the horizon.Beebe also discusses operational changes and concerns, including aviation, fuels, and hiring. He discusses the BLM aviation programs and how they plan to bolster fuels programs without overburdening fire employees who have already worked 1000 hour seasons. Grant also discusses transparency and honesty with hiring.DISCLAIMER:For the topics discussed today: I want to make it absolutely clear that I disagree with some of the things said by Grant in this episode - And I do agree with some of the stuff he says as well. However I will say this: Grant, we're all looking up to you in the Bureau of Land Management. We hope that you have those difficult conversations and listen to the boots on the ground - Because those are the people that have the most skin in the game, and you have the position and power to bridge the gap to do what's right by them.I hope that this is of value and I hope that everyone out there gets to understand Grant from his position and his perspective... Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Peace has victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them." Sacrifice is key to much of our history, society, and way of life - peace is only attainable if people are willing to strive for it. Peace is not normative and as much as we'd like to delude ourselves into believing this, nature shows us time and again that conflict, chaos, and disruption are the rules to existence - not the exceptions. Ironically, conflict, chaos, and disruption require counterbalances to perpetuate the cycle of their existence. These counterbalances can take many forms, one of which is the brave men and women who choose to step up to the plate, be it through military expertise, disaster intervention, or human ingenuity. It takes bravery, discipline, and a willingness to put your life on the line for those around you, to perpetuate peace. Ultimately, it's a lifetime of sacrifice for those that strive to keep the peace. In episode 88 of The Wolf and Bull, we had the pleasure of hosting Bradley Spencer, a military veteran, former wildland firefighter & paramedic, and owner of Saguaro Forge Co. Prior to our episode, we met Bradley and he gave us some insight into his incredible story - one of trial, tribulation, and overcoming. His family legacy is one built on sacrifice, service, and an appreciation for the principles upon which America was built. In this episode, we discuss Bradley's family legacy, his military service in Afghanistan, his experiences as a wildland firefighter, and his company Saguaro Forge Co. - a company he started to be closer with his family and his son who has special needs. Our discussion with Bradley was quite impactful, and it's clear that his personal journey - a journey full of great sacrifice, healing, and connection - is one that we think you'll love. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Kevin Conley. Kevin is a thru-hiker, wildland firefighter, and the author of Above the Ashes, a memoir about battling mental illness during a 3,500 mile bike ride from California to Florida with his dog. Kevin shares the history of his troubled upbringing- and how this eventually lead to his discovering the Appalachian Trail, and consequently his infatuation with thru-hiking. Kevin goes in-depth about the life of a wildland firefighter, how his crippling panic attacks nearly lead to his demise, and his spirit of giving back and bettering the community around him. This is a really deep, honest, and at times dark conversation- and we'd like to offer a trigger warning to listeners that the following interview touches on talks of suicide. We wrap the show with a chat about whether rain pants are necessary for backpacking, the triple crown of fast food breakfasts, if weekend warriors are allowed to use limited AT campsites, an update from MG, and more. Full disclaimer, this episode is pretty NSFW (Not Safe For Work)!Lets be honest with ourselves for a hot second - The topic of sex is pretty taboo... Many folks out there tend to shy around the subject, and even worse: They don't communicate to their partners about the subject. This can cause problems in the bedroom, which can cause other issues within the relationship... And being in a relationship with a Wildland Firefighter - or, being a Wildland Firefighter in a relationship - Can be difficult at times... (especially with the lack of communication and no cell phone service)That's why we have Associate Family and Marriage Therapist, Destiny Morris, on the show to have an honest, candid, and "life pro-tip" conversation about healthy relationships and a healthy sex life...Here's a little more about Destiny:"Destiny Morris is an associate marriage and family therapist who specializes in first responders and their families! In this podcast we will be discussing sex and first responder relationships- the common struggles as well as tips and tricks to keep the fire alive. Destiny has a remote private practice in Santa Barbara, California, and can see anyone in the state of California."Destiny is one rad therapist, and an advocate for healthy relationships in the first responder community... If you want to find out more about her, or get a visit with her practice - Check out the following links:Instagram - On_Being_ResilientPsychology Today - Destiny MorrisI know we primarily talk about male/female relationships in this episode... But, the things we talk about are genuinely universal in nature - no matter what love looks like for you- I just hope this episode helps you folks (in any kind of relationship, or playing the field) to have a better love life, and hopefully "spice it up" in the bedroom...Also - Consider taking a look at that book I mentioned... It's called, "The Adventure Challenge... In Bed" if you're looking to spice it up in the bedroom... Don't worry, its not a "zero-to-kinky shit" kind of book (its pretty tame, actually) - Its more like actually fun (adult) stuff you and your partner can do to better understand each other sexually, and zero in on what gets you and your partner going... Dialing in your nutrition can be extremely challenging for a tactical athlete, especially for a wildland firefighter during the fire season - The lunches absolutely suck, MRE's are probably nutritionally devoid, and you oftentimes find yourself eating a bunch of gas station food like a raccoon eating out of a dumpster... That's why we have Michelle Yurick on the show today to talk about nutrition, needed improvements, and some simple life hacks to get more quality in your diet while on the road.Michelle Yurick is a Dietician, NDTR, and former Zig Zag Hotshot. She currently lives in Ohio and is working for an arborist outfit to keep her saw skills sharp, and keep that outdoor career alive...Here is a little more about Michelle:"I'm an adventurer, part-time nomad, former wildland firefighter, registered dietetic technician, current tree-climber-in-training, coffee addict, and occasionally I write things.I have a B.S. degree - My formal education is in the nutrition field, which has come in handy multiple times, including being a sort of health "guru" throughout several seasons in wildland fire.I live an unconventional life. I drive a blue VW van with boards, boats, and bikes stacked on top. I've been all over the U.S., calling many different states "home" for short periods of time. I've been north of our borders as well as south, and I've even been across the pond to Africa. The people, along with the different cultures and experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today.I'm passionate about health and nutrition, holistic wellness, fitness and human performance, protecting and accessing public lands, anything dealing with wildland fire...and finding the best local coffee shops wherever I happen to be..."You can find Michelle at the following:@wondering.nutritionist on InstagramHave a nutrition-related question?
