When a business emerges that not only addresses the issue but also dramatically improves environmental impact, my attention is piqued.Azure Printed Homes, co-founded by Gene Eidelman, is doing just that. With cutting-edge technology, they're printing homes from recycled materials. Their mission is clear: build faster, reduce costs and minimize environmental harm."We started the company with three bullets: build faster, build less expensive and less environmental impact," Gene said in today's episode.Gene and his team have created large-format 3D printers that produce the modules of a house—floor, walls and ceiling—in just 24 hours. It's a staggering time savings compared to traditional construction, which can take 90 to 180 days. That efficiency doesn't sacrifice quality, thanks to their controlled, factory-based process. The company's origins lie in tragedy. After the Woolsey Fire devastated Malibu, Gene volunteered to help families navigate the rebuilding process. The experience galvanized him to rethink construction. "We really were still building the traditional way," he recalled. "If we don't have innovation, it'll be impossible to rebuild now."Today, Azure Printed Homes is delivering units across California, Georgia, Colorado, Arkansas and beyond. And they're doing it using recycled plastic. "We can use about 6,000 to 7,000 pounds of recycled material a day," Gene explained. "I can't think of any other industry that does that."They aren't just building homes. They're offering people a chance to be part of a solution. Azure has raised over $2 million from 2,000 investors across 46 states and 23 countries through regulation crowdfunding."What I love about crowdfunding is we now have 2,000 true partners," Gene told me. One early investor who started with just $1,000 ultimately brought in over $400,000 in additional investment and leasing support. The momentum continues. You can learn more and invest at s4g.biz/Azure before their campaign closes on April 26. This isn't just another startup. Azure is redefining what's possible in housing—and they're doing it with help from the crowd.tl;dr:Azure Printed Homes builds affordable, sustainable housing by 3D printing modular units from recycled plastic materials.Gene Eidelman co-founded the company after witnessing the devastating effects of the Woolsey Fire in Malibu. The factory-based printing process reduces build time from months to days, cuts costs and limits environmental harm.Azure has raised over $2 million via five crowdfunding campaigns, creating a community of 2,000 supportive investors.Gene's superpower is creating needed solutions through innovation, persistence and a mission-driven approach to housing and sustainability. How to Develop Solution Creation As a SuperpowerGene Eidelman's superpower is the ability to create solutions people genuinely need."This is my fourth startup, and honestly, I've never been involved in something that when you just offer a picture rendering where people say, I need to have it," Gene said. He explained that the core of their work at Azure Printed Homes is solving the real problem of affordable housing. By creating high-quality, attractive homes made from recycled materials that are produced quickly and inexpensively, he and his team are directly responding to one of society's greatest needs. "Affordable housing does not need to look ugly," he emphasized, reflecting a commitment not only to function but also to dignity. One story that illustrates Gene's superpower is the origin of Azure Printed Homes. After living through the Woolsey Fire and volunteering to help displaced families, Gene recognized the deep flaws in traditional construction. Rather than accept the slow, expensive and environmentally harmful status quo, he helped create a company that uses recycled materials and large-scale 3D printing to build homes in just 24 hours. What began as a community response evolved into a growing enterprise with national reach. To develop the superpower of solution creation, Gene implicitly offers several actionable tips:Identify what people desperately need; don't just chase trends.Combine deep domain expertise with a willingness to reimagine old methods.Prioritize speed, cost and environmental sustainability when designing new solutions.Stay committed even when others say it's impossible.Leverage global innovation and customize it to local needs.Use crowdfunding not only for funding but to build a community of believers and advocates.By following Gene Eidelman's example and advice, you can make solution creation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileGene Eidelman (he/him):Cofounder, Azure Printed HomesAbout Azure Printed Homes: Azure Printed Homes is fundamentally changing the construction industry by leveraging 3D printing technology using recycled polymers and fiberglass to prefab tiny homes, ADUs, affordable homes and units for housing after natural disasters 70% faster and 30% less expensive than existing construction methods. Website: azureprintedhomes.comX/Twitter Handle: @azureprinthomesCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/azureprintedhomesOther URL: invest.azureprintedhomes.comBiographical Information: Gene Eidelman: Pioneering Sustainable and Affordable 3D Printing of HomesFrom developing multifamily housing to revolutionizing the construction industry with 3D-printed homes, Gene's journey in entrepreneurship is marked by innovation and impact. 2021 marked the premiere of Lucy Walker’s documentary film “Bring Your Own Brigade” which unpacked the catastrophic California wildfires of 2018, The Camp Fire and The Woolsey Fire. Now four years after the film was released, Southern California recently experienced even more devastating wildfires in January 2025. The most damaging fires were the Eaton Fire and the Palisades Fire. For Lucy Walker, history is repeating itself at an even larger scale and her 2021 film is even more relevant today. It’s a traumatic revisiting of difficult subject matter, and here Lucy shares what she has learned about wildfires since making her film and what she thinks can be done to prevent wildfires from becoming even more catastrophic. She covered the destructive Woolsey Fire, in Los Angeles, in 2018. Recently, Goodyear found her own life very much in the center of the story. Living in Pacific Palisades, she had to evacuate early this month, and she documented her return days later to a scene of devastation in this audio story. “The house just is an idea of a house, or the aftermath of a house,” she said. “You can walk through the arched door at the front and the back, but there's just pretty much nothing in between.”

In this episode, Elle Russ dives into a fascinating concept rooted in one of the most sophisticated intelligence agencies in the world: Mossad. The 10th Man Principle was developed to combat the dangerous effects of groupthink—where harmony overrides critical evaluation. This principle mandates that if nine people in a group agree on a decision, the 10th person must dissent, ensuring every angle is rigorously tested. We explore the origins of this strategy in intelligence work and its relevance to personal and professional life. From preventing blind spots to fostering innovation and resilience, this mindset can help you make better decisions, whether in career moves, relationships, parenting, or even life-or-death scenarios. Join me as I share practical ways to apply this principle, real-life examples—including a life-saving decision during the 2018 Woolsey Fire—and how cultivating dissent can lead to wisdom, growth, and success. In 2018, the Woolsey Fire burned nearly 97,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It was one of the most destructive fires in Southern California history. Among the stories that emerged from the fire was one that seemed made for Hollywood: a group of Malibu surfers who stayed behind and helped save their town from the flames. In the new podcast Sandcastles, host and producer Adriana Cargill explores their story and tells us what we can learn from them about living safely in wildfire country. Plus, there were many things Julie Menter loved about her Oakland home when she first moved there in 2017. Chief among them were the three towering redwood trees in her backyard. Last year, one of the trees started to look sick. It had lost almost all of its leaves and, despite Menter watering it, it wasn't bouncing back. She's noticed, not just in her backyard but all around Oakland, redwood trees are looking dry and scraggly. So our friends at the Bay Curious went to find out what was going on with these iconic coast redwoods.

NOVELISTA young adult novel, “Darling, You're Not Alone” explores the philosophical contention that if extraordinary darkness exists, then so too must extraordinary light. Slajchert explains, “We know all too well about the mindless tragedies that take place regularly in our world today, but this book is about the search and eventual discovery that if you keep battling, on the other side of tragedy is life changing opportunity.” “Darling” is a story told through three different stages of a boy's maturation into a young man. When we meet our protagonist, Phoenix Iver, on his tenth birthday in 1994, we quickly discover that he is not like everyone else. As a tortured young soul with crippling, manic episodes of social anxiety and depression, Phoenix leans heavily on his relationship with his one true friend, his father Herman. Although Phoenix relies on Herman for many things, he becomes increasingly more and more dependent on Herman's glowing, yet mysterious belief that the world is a good place. Then, one cold morning, and on the verge of discovering where his father's light comes from, Phoenix finds himself caught in the cross hairs of a school shooting. “Darling” chronicles this boy's struggles and rebounds as he attempts to believe in the idea's supported by his father despite all the darkness he's seen. Dr. Noelle Nelson is a California-based psychologist, consultant and speaker. She is passionate about personal growth and happiness. She's authored over a dozen books about finding our better selves. In 2018, her home was destroyed in the Woolsey fire that tore through many parts of Southern California. Dr. Nelson was able to turn tragedy into hope. As part of her own healing process and to help others who have lived through natural disasters, she wrote Phoenix Rising - Surviving Catastrophic Loss: Fires, Floods, Hurricanes and Tornadoes, Amazon, where she explores the trauma of losing everything--the photos and memorabilia of a lifetime--how to survive the immediate aftermath and how to find the strength to start a new chapter in life.  In her more than 30 years of experience studying and researching human behavior, Dr. Nelson knows that we all could use inspiration in our lives. She shares her thoughts on empowerment, learning and growth on her twice-monthly podcast, "Up! Uplifting, Inspiring, Practical." In 2016, Dr. Nelson noticed that a segment of society is often disparaged and dismissed--those in their later years. Putting on her research hat once again, she found that far from the stereotypical views of older adults, a vast number are leading productive, happy and healthy lives. She decided to highlight them (over 600 and counting) on her Facebook page Meet The Amazings (@MeetTheAmazings) and wrote about many in her book The Longevity Secret, How to Live Happy, Healthy & Vibrant Into Your 70s, 80s, 90s and Beyond (Amazon Kindle).  Dr. Nelson believes that we can all enjoy happy, fulfilling lives while accomplishing great things in love, at home and at work, as we appreciate ourselves, our world and others. In today's episode Dr. Nelson shares how we can start anew after a disaster. In 2018 her home was destroyed by fire in approximately 45 minutes during the Woolsey Fire in Southern California. Nothing was left of her home or her possessions, even the cement driveway turned to powder. As impossible as it was to conceive that her home was gone, she never stopped carrying on. Dr. Nelson reflects on how she survived during the immediate aftermath of losing all per possessions and how she was able to start a new chapter in her life. As she shares, it was out of continuing the normal activities of her life, her anchors, that miracles came. Dr. Nelson's story will remind you just how wonderful people are, that kindness is all around us, and that despite profound loss, we can start anew. We're lucky as artists that we can recover much faster because we can express. Nature recovers and we recover.  Lita Albuquerque is an artist whose body of work has often defied the strictures of convention and, ultimately, canvas. Over the course of her celebrated career, her paintings and sculptures outgrew the traditional materials contained within her studio and expanded to inhabit the land and people around her.  To experience Lita's large-scale installations (often tinged in an ultramarine blue pigment all her own) is to dance with dichotomies. At once grounded and transcendent, intimate and epic, earthly and celestial – Lita's work, above all, is a celebration of how we connect to our environment.  It's a creative worldview that was put to test in November of 2018 when the Woolsey Fire engulfed the hills around Malibu and destroyed her home and studio. Suddenly, the place in which she spent decades raising her kids and making her art was gone, along with a vast archive of completed works and works-in-progress.  It was a monumental loss that would have been devastating to any artist—and particularly so for Lita, whose creative imagination has always been intrinsically connected to her environment. But Lita could not let her grief paralyze her because she had to get to work on the long list of pieces previously commissioned by collectors. That backlog turned out to be her saving grace. Eventually she found that the process of creative expression had resurrected the parts of her she feared the fire had claimed forever.  Over the course of a Change Lab conversation alternately stirring and sublime, Lita generously retraces the harrowing path she's walked to a place of recovery and renewal she simply describes as “back.” Learn more about your ad choices. It has been said that no one starts a faith podcast without a great story. Experience the powerful faith warrior journeys of longtime friends and hosts actress-singer-author Brenda Epperson-Moore and Huff Post Guest Writer Shelley Anderson Myers and hear how the “Morning Cup of Faith” podcast was born. Shelley reflects, “God put our feet to the fire, literally, but He always shows you things for a reason.”    “Morning Cup of Faith” started as a Bible study around Brenda's kitchen table with Shelley and a few friends. Shelley didn't realize that her faith warrior journey was about to begin when the 2018 Woolsey Fire burned down 24 houses on her street. Her house suffered extensive damage, but it was thankfully was spared. When her family moved back into her house, she felt a darkness that she had never experienced. Shelley reveals, “I encountered an evil presence in my bedroom in the middle of the night. I called Brenda immediately and she helped me turn around the darkness in my house. The enemy is always on the prowl looking for opportunities to take us out. I got very aggressive with the Word, writing down spiritual warfare scriptures and placing them under my children's mattresses and all around the house. I played Christian radio stations all day. I learned how important it is to pray against spiritual warfare daily. I don't want anything in my house that doesn't come from God.”   Brenda chronicles her faith warrior journey in her inspirational book “Rise Up: Move Out of the Darkness and into the Light.” She overcame the death of her father at a young age, a sexual assault and being bullied as a size 16 overweight and out of control youth. She was raised by a single mom who sometimes didn't know where their next meal was coming from. Brenda reveals, “When my father died when I was six years old, I raised my fist to the sky and I said, ‘I hate you, God.” I believe that is the moment that the enemy came into my heart and put an eight year stronghold over my life. That's why I'm passionate about helping people break strongholds in their lives that are holding them back."   When lockdown occurred in 2020, Brenda and Shelley both felt a powerful calling on their hearts to use their media backgrounds to reach out and encourage people with a podcast. Shelley shares, “After all Brenda and I had experienced together, God nudged us to start this podcast and to step out in obedience and faith. Learning how to put on the full armor of God and to get to that strength and joy is not an overnight process.”    How has God been nudging you to step out in obedience and faith?
