In this rich conversation, Guadalupe Nettel joins Adam Biles at Shakespeare and Company to explore the themes of her short story collection The Accidentals. They delve into the complexities of perception and the uncanny, the deep strangeness embedded in familial relationships, and the porous boundary between nature and human nature. Nettel discusses how her stories often begin with a striking image and unfold through a character's voice, frequently taking shape in the liminal space between realism and the fantastic. The conversation touches on the lasting psychological and social effects of the pandemic, the emotional and moral ambiguities of parenthood, and the hidden influence of family histories. Nature—particularly animal behaviour—serves both as metaphor and mirror, challenging the illusion of human superiority. The episode also examines the short story form, translation as reincarnation, and literature's power to illuminate the cracks in our perceived reality.Buy The Accidentals here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/the-accidentals-2Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican author of award-winning novels and short story collections. History shows that our nation was to continue the "reformation" struggle in England between religious liberty and religious tolerance that had ended with restoration of the monarchy and the Church of England's primacy. But, recent First Amendment religious liberty arguments made to the U.S. Supreme Court show that we have forgotten that history and God' purpose for our nation. Today, David will demonstrate that esteemed early Justice Joseph Story wrote about it, picking up language used by John Owen and contained in the 1658 Savoy Declaration. He'll show the U.S. Supreme Court once understood it, too. This week shows that it is time for the Church to get back to the mission given it pertaining to harmonious reconciliation of religious liberty and righteous and just civil law.

PLEASE, if you are a loss parent and even if you are not, listen to this episode....Dr. Joanne Cacciatore is a bereaved mother to her daughter Cheyenne born still 30 years ago. She is also the founder of the MISS Foundation, an international NGO that serves families whose children have died. She is also a tenured research professor and senior Wrigley Institute of Sustainability Scholar at Arizona State University, spearheading the Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Bereavement. Her best selling book, Bearing the Unbearable: Love, Loss, and the Heartbreaking Path of Grief, is a national award winning best seller that has helped revolutionize the way our culture thinks, and feels, about grief. She works with and counsels families from all around the world who have experienced catastrophic deaths. Dr. Jo, believing that current practices around food production are a social, ethical, and environmental justice issue, is a vegan and hasn't eaten meat since 1972.  She also teaches meditation, mindfulness, and compassion and ahimsa practices to students and clients from around the world.  Dr Jo started The Selah Carefarm just outside of Sedona, AZ. It is the first carefarm for the traumatically bereaved in the U.S. It is a very special place on 20 acres of beautiful farmland where bereaved family members can come to both give and receive connection, compassion, and understanding. All the animals on the carefarm have been rescued from abuse, neglect, torture, or homelessness. Our grieving families know what it means to suffer, and so do these animals. Dr Jo is truly a power house and a dream guest of mine, I am a different person after getting to speak with her.To get more info on the carefarm: The Selah CarefarmI mention her Open Letter to Grievers. Catherine's experiences have covered a range of "rare" circumstances. We discuss ALL of it. She has faced an incompetent cervix, placental abruption, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), the NICU, a journey with a gestational carrier and miscarriages. After thinking she would never be able to physically carry another baby, she carried her miracle baby, Lux, to 37 weeks in 2021. Almost 8 years after her first loss, she shows us that grief has no expiration and how she includes all of her babies in their family today. Check out her Podcast: Angel Moms SisterhoodInstagram: @angelmoms.sisterhoodYouTube: @angelmomssisterhoodEmail: angelmomssisterhood@gmail.com JOIN THE LOSSLINK WAITLIST HEREOr if it's after July 18th, go to LossLink.com *************************************NOTE: I am not a doctor or a therapist. Nikolai Yakovenko: the stillborn promise of the LLM age

Razib Khan's Unsupervised Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2024 76:49

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Nikolai Yakovenko, a returning guest to the podcast, about his new AI startup, DeepNewz, and the state of the LLM-driven AI landscape circa the summer of 2024, where we are in relation to earlier expectations and where we might be in the next decade. Yakovenko is an AI researcher who has worked at Google, Twitter and Nvidia, and is now a serial entrepreneur. He is also a competitive poker player. He currently lives in Miami, Florida, though he travels frequently to America's numerous “ideaopolises,” from San Francisco, Austin, Boston to New York City. Razib and Yakovenko discuss the reality that in the middle of 2024 here they are again, chatting about the world on a podcast, a scenario not everyone anticipated in the heady days of December 2022/January 2023 when the more overheated visiony tech  imaginations swirled with expectations that the advent of artificial general intelligence, the “machine god,” was imminent. Though OpenAI's GPT 3/3.5 was a leap ahead of GPT 2, GPT 4/4o has been a less spectacular advance. One of the major unforeseen aspects of the LLM-based framework in AI has been the returns to scale in terms of training data, but the last year and a half have not seen any great quantum jumps. The paradigm-shifting revolution that was promised has not arrived. Though AI has increased productivity on the margins, and certain artistic professions and translators have been decimated, overall, it is still a technology with more promise than realized outcomes. Yakovenko points out that AI-driven music creation produces serviceable outputs, but not great masterpieces. To test this, Razib used Suno to create a song “Nikolai's Dream” within 5 minutesmid-conversation. Though mildly catchy, Suno's lyrical styling elicited more amusement than awe. Yakovenko notes the importance of the LMSYS Chatbot Arena Leaderboard to get a sense of the performance of the various LLM projects. Using the feedback of participants, it produced an updated ranking of chatbot performance. The top ten models are from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and a Chinese vendor. Yakovenko notes the compression, with a very tight distribution of scores at the top. It turns out that OpenAI is not running away from their competition contra  its brand visibility likely being two orders of magnitude greater than Anthropic's. This brings to the fore the reality that these AI technologies have been viewed as both scientific research projects and potential business and consumer products. Finally, Yakovenko and Razib talk about DeepNewz. While most LLM-based chatbots tend to exclude very recent data and events, Yakovenko had the idea of creating DeepNewz to aggregate and assemble the breaking news in various categories like science and sports. Instead of a top-down query of news in various categories, the idea behind DeepNewz is to both cater to your preferences in terms of what you might find interesting, but also to surface stories that you might not know you might be interested in, adding more value. There's an energy that comes with deep cleaning that is a bit sweaty but so sweet.  Sometimes we let a lot of grime build up in our minds, too.  We may have experienced a long winter in our hearts or we may have just gotten used to things being grey.  In today's episode we're talking about deep cleaning the corners of your mind so you can start fresh with squeaky clean thoughts that shine.  Get support from Amy!
