Kelly Fremon Craig's winning new adaptation of Judy Blume's ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET is as gentle and good-natured as the other film in this pairing, Todd Solondz's WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, is acerbic and off-putting. But both films are frank in their own way about a stage of life that cinema often ignores, so after talking through MARGARET's warm and welcoming 1970s vision of suburban New Jersey adolescence, we bring DOLLHOUSE's grim and grungy 1990s depiction into the discussion to compare the films' respective takes on puberty, peer pressure, crushes, and bullying. Inspired by the new adaptation of Judy Blume's classic coming-of-age novel ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET, we're beginning this pairing by looking back at another rocky journey through adolescence in the New Jersey suburbs — though Dawn Wiener's journey in Tom Solondz's 1995 indie WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE is considerably rockier. Where MARGARET is gentle and warm, DOLLHOUSE is as prickly as its protagonist, and unsparing in the way it mines dark comedy by stacking the decks against her at every turn. Whether that comedy is worth the accompanying discomfort is a topic of discussion this week, along with the film's left-field ending move and Solondz's continuing adventures in the cinematic Wienerverse. Plus, a listener letter about BEFORE SUNRISE raises a question for discussion: Has any genre of movie benefitted from the addition of cell phones? Fat: Starting out in 1989 whilst on a short residence in Melbourne, FAT started out as a 3-piece band. Within months, they travelled back to their hometown of Brisbane and started playing as many shows as possible in the burgeoning local scene. During the 90’s, the band kept growing from strength to strength, gaining national radio airplay, playing on some of the country’s largest stages, including a stint on the Big Day Out, and even a APRA nomination for ‘Song Of The Year’ for Man In The Iron Helmet. Towards the end of the 90’s, their record label had folded and overall morale in the band started to wane, so they decided to go into indefinite hiatus. That is until 2012, when they got together for a jam and realized that they still had the fire in them. They released ‘Blue Meets Black’ in 2013 and marked the mighty return of Fat. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Triffid on the 3rd of May, 2015. Tiny Migrants: Hailing from the wild and ragged Ric’s scene in Brisbane’s late noughties, Tiny Migrants formed as a bit of a supergroup to release some creative steam from all of their respective bands. Between the 5 of them, you get members from Velociraptor, Running Gun Sound, Keep On Dancin’s & Teen Sensations. Although, their surf-garage sound is not too far from the sound of those bands, their rambunctious live show definitely stays within the spirits of the aforementioned bands. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Triffid on the 12th of April, 2015. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 15 May 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

This week, it's the most wonderful time of the year, as we take an episode to honour all our favourite spooks, creeps, monsters and freaks: that's right, ourselves: Grave-ier Boo-betzki Boo-nan, and Tomb Severed Hand, Ugh, Son! We compare spooky sound effects, measure the length of of our genitals in Scrabble letters, and tell the grisly true story of Octopus's Garden. Also I just realised we forgot to do another episode of World Of Scares. That would've been great.MUSIC USED:SSJ Halloween Theme: Xavier Rubetzki NoonanZombies!: March of the Real Flygristle castle: Poke -1,170FEATURE TRACK:Monster Beach Party: Teen SensationsGrab a download or pre-order the Teen Sensations' debut 7" HERE.Check out their Facebook page for the tour details, including a Sydney show with Dr. Spaceman!CLICK HERE to download!Email Tom or Xavier or both!
Sometimes it's a real struggle to find topics worthy of our judgement. This is not one of those weeks. Not when you've got the announcement of a 2013 Fleetwood Mac tour (to hell with the presumably exorbitant ticket price, Alasdair is going!) or the magical nerd microcosm that is San Diego Comic Con. Oh, and there's also something to do with Katy Perry's spinning peppermint bra being a health hazard, but we're obviously too high brow to talk about that, right? WRONG! Even our favourite guest buddy Madeleine Laing can't resist. Our favourite things this week range from new tunes by local Brisbane band Teen Sensations - too much fun to be a joke band - and slavish adoration of new horror flick Cabin In The Woods. Finally, what happens when two people (Madeleine and co-host Rob Newcombe) are forcibly cut off from the internet for a few days? What memes, breaking news and manufactured controversies are they deprived of? We find out in a quiz that combines learning, fun and humiliation in one tidy package!
