For most people, running a 100 mile race is an enormous undertaking, that requires months of diligent training. This week's guest, Basil Heaney, takes a different approach. He enjoys racing more than training, which means that he runs multiple ultra-distance races every year. Most recently, he ran the Winter Downs 200, the Winter Spine race (268 miles), and the Arc of Attrition (100 miles) within a seven week period. Some may call him crazy! Kenton talks to Basil about why he chooses to do this and how he approaches it. They also discuss Basil's 'passion project', a charity called Into Ultra that he has recently founded to help people whose financial barriers prevent them from running ultras. Although Kenton has not run an ultra, he and Basil find common ground in a love for the outdoors, the joy of running, the freedom of ski touring and a shared appreciation of Italian refugios! In 2005, Lorraine McCall left her house to 'go for a walk' on her 40th birthday and didn't stop until she had walked up, and between, all 284 Munros in Scotland (2 Munros have since been downgraded, so there are now officially only 282!) This was a journey of 1,500 miles on foot. Ten years later, Lorraine tackled all 222 Corbetts to celebrate her 50th birthday, and most recently, Lorraine became the first woman to summit all 231 Grahams in a single push in 2024 (she's about to turn 60!) We think you will agree that Lorraine is Kenton's most under-stated, humble, unassuming guest so far. She has walked, cycled and kayaked thousands of miles across Scotland purely for the love of it. She shuns technology and her footprint on social media is tiny. In this episode we learn all about the classification of hills in Scotland and the challenges of getting up some of them, but mostly we come away with an appreciation for Lorraine who found her chosen adventures and embraced them wholeheartedly, overcoming the difficulties and continually finding joy in them. This week Kenton dives into (excuse the pun!) a fascinating conversation with wild swimmer, author and journalist, Ella Foote. Ella has been swimming outside since her childhood, when her parents used to take her to the seaside and they spent hours in the sea. These days she is editor of Outdoor Swimmer magazine, she is founder of Dip Advisor - a company that takes people on swim adventures - and she is author of 'How to Wild Swim'. Kenton and Ella discuss everything from kit and equipment, to water quality and community. Ella's love for swimming outdoors is quite simply infectious and we challenge you to not want to dip your toe in the water after listening to this episode. In our thirtieth episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, Christina Koutsi, Dylan Fairman and Kenton de Jong discuss the disappearance and subsequent murders of several men from Toronto's Gay Village during the early 2010s. The Toronto Police Service were unequipped to handle these murders and were unfamiliar with the LGBTQA+ community they were taking part in. All signs pointed to a man named Bruce McArthur, but McArthur was a senior citizen, who landscaped for a living and volunteered as Santa Claus in the malls. However, as the investigation continued, more of McArthur's life became known to the authorities. From a tough childhood, a messy divorce, bankruptcy, a troubled son, and more than one report of him being violent or aggressive, the police began to wonder if McArthur was involved, and if so, what happened to these missing men. As more and more men went missing, the search continued and the answer seemed further and further from the norm. Come learn about a Canadian serial killer like no other!

Lise has chosen to follow in the footsteps of women who 'pushed the boundaries' in the world of adventure in the early 20th century and who unwittingly played a huge part in making adventure accessible to women today. She tells Kenton about the depth of her research, the clothing she has sourced, and the people she has met whilst following in the footsteps of some remarkable women in India, Scotland, Iran and France. Send us a textDr. Kenton Brown, the older of two siblings, grew up during a time of war. While his father was a gifted athlete, he wasn't strongly encouraged to pursue sports. Ken played Little League baseball as a child, but his true passion for sports began with tennis, which he played extensively during his youth. He continued his tennis journey at the University of Notre Dame, but as he progressed through his studies, Ken shifted his focus to pre-med courses, while still staying active through intramural sports and jogging. Jogging became his preferred way to maintain fitness during his demanding medical training, all while managing family life with four children.Throughout his career, Ken maintained his interest in racquet sports, as well as cycling, running, and swimming. After overcoming a challenging personal period, he joined a senior softball league, marking the start of a new athletic chapter. Since then, Ken has been inducted into the Texas Senior Softball Hall of Fame and has played on multiple championship teams. He also holds several sprinting records at our Games and senior world records. Now 81 and retired, Ken remains active through running, pickleball, and regular exercise.

From the evocative sounds of prayer wheels to the rushing of rivers and the breathlessness of hiking at altitude, you will get a real taste of life in the Khumbu Valley and we hope that it will set your tastebuds tingling for the adventures that lie ahead in 2025!
Tracy's overheard some praise about Wayne's food at the Bull and suggests a few promotions. But they discover Wayne's leaving for a six-week cruise on Thursday. It's a band gig. Disappointed Tracy offers to cover in the kitchen, and Kenton keen to solve the problem agrees. Tracy heads off before Jolene has had time to think it through. She then realises they should have asked Fallon first. When Fallon offers to step in Jolene admits her mistake. Fallon insists it's fine. As Jill prepares to leave for Sunderland to visit Shula, Leonard feels it's time he went home. Later concerned Ruth and David discuss it and agree they'd like Leonard to stay with them permanently, for Jill's sake. When Ruth mentions it to Jill later, she's shocked to discover that Jill isn't keen on Leonard moving in. She thinks Jill's scared, and that she and Leonard are both hiding their feelings. Khalil needs to research an essay he's writing about farms from a predator's point of view. When he goes to Brookfield to research the Asian hornets, David invites Khalil to tag along to the winter housing with him. They get chatting about beavers and David's really scathing about them. Khalil mentions Neo, who he Kirsty and Rex met last week, then clams up. David knows Khalil's hiding something and persuades him to divulge the information. David returns home in a rage. But Leonard has some news – an old friend's died and the funeral's on Wednesday. He's cut up and David and Ruth sympathise, before David declares he's ready to read Justin Elliott the riot act.
Whilst trekking in the Khumbu region recently, Kenton bumped into 'super guide' Lakpa Rita Sherpa, and took the opportunity to interview him for the podcast. Lakpa Rita was born in Thame, a small village high in the Himalayas, and followed in his father's footsteps becoming a mountain guide and Sirdar. Lakpa Rita has lived in Seattle since 2000 and has led multiple expeditions all over the world. He first summited Everest in 1990 and has stood atop the world's highest mountain 17 times. Lakpa Rita now runs his own guiding company, Khangri Experience, and personally prefers to climb 'smaller' mountains these days, as well as leading treks in Nepal, the USA and elsewhere. Kenton learns things about Lakpa Rita that he didn't know during this conversation, so we're sure that you will too. Enjoy! Family and friends prepare the Tearoom ready for Pat and Tony's 50th Wedding Anniversary party. Tony's had the task of keeping the surprise from Pat, and she's delighted when she gets there. She can't believe that Tony managed to keep it a secret from her. When Mick congratulates Tony on his long marriage, Tony says that he and Pat have weathered many storms, but he wouldn't have wanted to go through them with anyone else. Talk turns to Mick staying at Joy's, with Mick explaining that it's only over Christmas and then they'll see. But he's enjoying the home comforts and being with Joy of course. Tony reckons Jolene and Kenton will be rooting for them – they probably can't wait to get his old campervan off their car park! Elsewhere Joy chats to Tom and Natasha saying it's a shame Helen's moving out from next door to her. When Natasha says what a great house it is, Joy suggests that Tom and Natasha move in. Joy heads off to mingle and Natasha points out to Tom that they can't rent forever; Seren and Nova deserve a bigger house. Tom admits that's he's tempted.Later Pat thanks Tony for a wonderful evening and they reminisce about their early days. And now with a thriving farm and Helen and Tom ready to take it forward for their children, it's not a bad legacy. They kiss. Looking on Mick and Joy comment that it just goes to show that if you find the right person, you need to hold on to them tightly.
Melissa Arnot is a mountain guide, Everest summiteer, adventurer and co-founder of The Juniper Fund. More recently, she has taken up ultra-running and in this episode of Cool Conversations, Kenton talks to her about her experiences in the 450km Tor des Glaciers race a few months ago. Melissa didn't finish the race and has taken a lot of learnings from her unfortunate DNF. She continued for far longer than many of us would believe possible yet still struggled to process her 'failure' for several weeks afterwards. This is the second time that Melissa has been on the pod, and we think you will quickly understand why she is welcome anytime!
Ben's working at the GP surgery where he bumps into Azra, who's concerned about Zainab. Azra thinks Zainab thinks should be putting in applications for university. Otherwise her gap year could end up being permanent. Zainab arrives and Azra seizes her opportunity to turn the conversation back to university, encouraging Ben to say he's enjoying his course. In fact she'll pay for Ben and Azra to discuss it over a hot chocolate. Zainab's not keen until Azra throws in a take-away later. Zainab explains to Ben that she's not sure she wants to go to university, but her mum shouldn't worry - she just needs a bit of time to work things out.Lynda notices that Mick's looking a bit below par. He explains that ticket sales for the Christmas Brunch at The Bull are very slow. He talked Jolene and Kenton into doing it, because he was really keen to be Father Christmas. But it's back-fired on him now. Meanwhile Jolene tells Kenton that she bumped into Helen in the shop. Apparently Jack's really excited about ‘Creepy Christmas'. When Kenton's incredulous that Helen actually think's it's on, Jolene confirms that Helen was hoping to buy some tickets. And there's some other parents who want to book too. Kenton wonders if Creepy Christmas has got legs after all. Later he tells Lynda and Mick that it's actually a really good idea. The Bull will do it as well as the Santa Brunch. Kenton's happy that Lynda and Mick are going to rehearse, but less so when Lynda wants to sort the financial terms first.
Ruth and David comment on the massive parcel that's arrived at Brookfield for Leonard, which they discover contains an electric bike. Leonard thinks it will make a real difference to his life and the planet. After charging it, he heads off for a spin around the village.Later Lynda turns up at Brookfield explaining to Ruth and David that she's just seen Leonard in the village, travelling at excessive speed. They agree to have a word with him about his dangerous driving. But Ben thinks Leonard's an experienced cyclist and Lynda was probably exaggerating. Nonetheless David points out that Leonard's no spring chicken and so more at risk from injury. Later Leonard returns from his ride, excited for his next one. When David mentions that Lynda was concerned about his speed, Leonard's unrepentant saying that if Lynda comes around telling tales again, he'll speak to her himself. Kenton catches up with Mick about next Sunday's Santa brunch. Kenton wonders if there's perhaps another direction that Mick's Santa delivery could go in, suggesting that Mick might use a different voice. But when Mick does, his delivery is flat and emotionless. Later Lynda gets a call from Kenton who explains his dilemma; Mick either sounds wooden and robotic or absolutely terrifying. Kenton wonders if Lynda could give Mick a few pointers. However, later she explains how impressed she was with Mick's performance. It's highly original and conjures up ‘Christmas darkness'. Lynda suggests having a Creepy Christmas with festive tales instead. But Kenton's adamant – all he wants is a traditional, non-terrifying Santa with a boring old brunch and grotto.

This episode of Cool Conversations is a very special one because Kenton sits down with his close friend and Number One Sherpa, Dorjee Gyelzen. Dorjee grew up in Pangboche, Nepal which sits at 4,000m altitude. Life in the high Himalayas is challenging, but through hard work and commitment Dorjee has forged a career in mountaineering and Kenton rates him as one of the best! Dorjee has climbed Mount Everest 23 times and he has summited Ama Dablam (his favourite mountain) an astonishing 27 times. Listen now to hear about Dorjee's childhood and his journey into mountaineering, and to learn about his Buddhist faith and his deep love and sense of responsibility for his family.

Leonard is up early in the workshop and David finds him fixing up an old rusty bike. The two discuss the massive farmers' protest about inheritance tax outside Parliament. Leonard used to be quite the long-distance cyclist and Ruth and David marvel as he zips around the yard on the restored bike. Josh says he can have it, so Leonard takes it for a spin to the shops. Kenton and Jolene are shocked awake by the noise of Mick working on his van in the pub car park, trying to bring it back to life. Kenton's roped in to helping, and he complains about how much Brad's doing for George. They discuss Kirsty's house sale – Joy's worried about Helen, Henry and Jack. Mick's introduced to Leonard, on his bike, and Mick offers him some cycling gear care of Joy. Meanwhile, Jolene comes out to remind oil-covered Kenton that they need to open the pub. As a thank you for the bike, Leonard takes David and Josh for a drink, where Mick has stored dismantled parts from his van and jokes that they're never getting rid of him. But Mick has been singing their praises to his mate Errol, who may book the Bull for his birthday bash. Kenton admits to David that it looks like Mick's van is never going to run again, so Jolene is aghast at the idea of it staying outside the pub. Leonard has enjoyed a cycle but struggles now with hills. Kenton talks about getting an electric bike, but Leonard dismisses the idea. David just asks Leonard to be careful.

Justin spots an opportunity, and Kenton gets his hopes up.
In 2022, Portland residents voted to drastically change the city’s form of government. That includes using ranked choice voting to expand the city council from five seats to 12. Another change is the creation of four geographic districts, with voters in each district electing three candidates to represent them on the new council. District 2 covers most of North and Northeast Portland, including neighborhoods such as Irvington, St. John’s, Kenton and Cully. On Oct. 17, “Think Out Loud” convened a District 2 candidates forum at Oakshire Beer Hall. Candidates were invited to participate based on the number of individual donors that contributed to their campaign. They include: Marnie Glickman, Mariah Hudson, Sameer Kanal, Debbie Kitchin, Mike Marshall, Tiffani Penson, Elana Pirtle-Guiney, Dan Ryan, Jonathan Tasini, Nat West and Nabil Zaghloul.
Kenton gloats to Jolene about his Flower and Produce award-winning apple and cheese pie. Lilian toasts George's sentencing with them, relieved that Alice and Fallon can both draw a line under it all now. They look through entries for the competition to name the kitten, but they aren't impressed, so decide to give it another week. However, amongst the entries there's a message from someone who is interested in the old Shires ashtray in the competition photo. They agree to get in touch with him.Emma can't be bothered to get up – not only has her boy been taken away, but they've put him in an adult prison. Susan reminds her that George will be on a wing with people his age and that George said he was ok with it. Emma retorts that since they forced him to tell the truth, George has had no choice but to be brave. She knows he's scared. And she hasn't had her phone call from him yet. Susan takes her in hand, ordering Emma to get up and get dressed. She needs to think about Keira too.Later, Emma thanks Susan for chivvying her along. Susan advises her to keep putting one foot in front the other, so that when George rings he'll hear normality in Emma's voice. Emma agrees that George is stronger than she thinks. They'll get him through it. When George rings later he is on edge, because of something kicking off in the wing. When they're interrupted by a bang inside the prison Emma becomes desperate, before George is cut off.
Jolene and Kenton have difficulty photographing their kitten for the kitten naming competition – she keeps disappearing off! Later they spot a boy stroking her in the pub car park, claiming that the kitten was on the road and that he'd practically saved her life. He tells them his name's Kahlil and he's just moved into Beechwood.Later, Kenton's not satisfied with his kitten photos, but Jolene likes the one in the old Shires ashtray and they decide to go with it for the competition photo. Jolene invites Fallon and Harrison over for a drink later – George is in court this week and Fallon's feeling confused about reading out her personal statement in court. Jolene's going there with her for support.Lilian asks Lynda's advice about whether she should encourage Alice to come to court for George's sentencing on Thursday. They stop in mid-flow when they spot a boy appearing to be feeding Lynda's llamas crisps. He's adamant he isn't though, explaining how llama's digestive systems work. He thinks Salieri's constipated. That's too much for Lynda who demands to know the boy's name to report him to his parents. But he runs off before she can finish. Later a girl turns up looking for him. When Lynda suggests he's dropped his drinks can as litter, the girl says it's not his. They're boycotting that drink. The boy reappears and she heads home with him. Slowly Lynda realises who they might've been. Azra lives in Beechwood – what if they're her children? Lynda worries that she might've offended Adil's family practically as soon as they've moved in
