Morning began with mist that curled along the hill like breath. Ewan rose before the light had gathered in the glen, pulled on his woolen jacket, and crossed the yard to the byre. The cow turned its mild face at his step, warm air puffing from its nostrils in the cold. He set the pail, pressed his forehead to the flank, and listened to milk ring the tin. The sound was small and steady. On mornings like this, it steadied him. Inside the cottage, peat smoke climbed through the hole in the roof and drifted out into the white air. His mother, Mairi, crept around the hearth. She broke an oatcake in half and set one piece by his bowl. The fire finally caught and sent a clean orange through the room. Ewan's younger brother, Fergus, slept in a heap near the warm wall, face hidden in his blanket. Isla, thirteen and quick with her hands, sat near the light and mended a tear in her apron with tiny, neat stitches. Alasdair, their father, coughed from the bed corner. The cough had a deep rattle to it, making Mairi look up from the fire. She went to him, laid her palm on his brow, and smoothed back his hair. He shut his eyes and breathed until the fit passed. Ewan poured himself a bowl of brose and sat by the door. He watched the mist move over the ridge. It felt alive, as if it walked. He had always thought of the hills as older than any story, and the mist as the way they spoke. A knock came at the door. Not the tap of a neighbor. A firm set of three that Ewan felt in the floorboards. Mairi's hand paused above the pot. Ewan set his bowl aside and opened the door to two men in wool coats, their shoulders wet. Behind them stood a third, younger, who held a leather bag under his cloak. Their faces had the tight look of men who carry news and prefer not to... Controversial efforts at space tourism, such as by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, have reignited old debates about the purpose of space exploration. What relevance does the world beyond our planet have to anyone apart from billionaires and their super-rich clients? Without defending the growing commercialisation of the space sector, environmental historian Professor Dagomar Degroot offers some answers. In conversation with Alasdair, he examines the solar system's influence on humanity - and humanity's influence on the solar system. They explore how humans have survived past climate shifts, and how human understanding of climate and space have always been connected. Dagomar Degroot is Associate Professor of Environmental History at Georgetown University and a leading scholar on the Little Ice Age. His first book, “The Frigid Golden Age,” was published in 2018. His new work, “Ripples on the Cosmic Ocean,” is published by Penguin and available to pre-order here. He also has a podcast telling the story of climate's influence on humanity, The Climate Chronicles.Further reading: Little Ice Age Lessons, Dagomar Degroot, Aeon, 2025 The Frigid Golden Age, Dagomar Degroot, Cambridge University Press, 2018 The History of Climate and Society, Dagomar Degroot, IOPScience, 2022 Climate Change in Human History: Prehistory to the Present, Benjamin Lieberman and Elizabeth Gordon, 2022, Bloomsbury The Story of CO₂ Is the Story of Everything: How Carbon Dioxide Made our World, Peter Brannen, 2025, Harper Collins Colonial Cataclysms: Climate, Landscape, and Memory in Mexico's Little Ice Age, Bradley Skipyk, 2020, University of Arizona Press Click here for our website to read all our most recent Land and Climate Review features and pieces.
The boys discover a peculiar cult boasting not one, but two Jesuses. Yowzah! Must be pretty awkward at Christmas. James whisks Alasdair off to the commune of the Agapemonites: a scandalous Victorian sect nestled in the sauciest region of Somerset. (Well, a few miles north of Taunton.) There's a little extra spice in the mix, because James has noticed that the word "sects" sounds a bit rude. See Alasdair On Tour in 2026! Send us a textJoining me on today's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Alasdair Warren, owner of Bride Valley Vineyard in Dorset. Born and raised in Dorset, Alasdair and his family have a long history of farming in the county, with his Great Grandfather establishing Warren's cider in the 1920s.Educated at the University of Nottingham with a Batchelor of Science in Geology, Alasdair began his career in investment banking and currently heads up a Global Soda Ash business. He also runs Slapelands Farm, just outside Bridport, where he upholds his family's cider making tradition, using heritage variety apples grown in the orchard there. In September 2023, Alasdair purchased Bride Valley Vineyard, which was initially established by world renowned industry figure Steven Spurrier – the orchestrator of the famous 1976 blind tasting competition The Judgement of Paris. Steven, who sadly died in 2021, planted vines on his wife's family sheep farm in 2008 and Bride Valley has since become famous for its Dorset Crémant among other award-winning wines. Alasdair says the acquisition of the vineyard reflects his motivation to honour and develop his family's rural heritage while promoting the outstanding produce Dorset offers, adding that it is his aim is to "continue a deep-rooted family connection to agriculture in Dorset" by applying modern viticultural practices to preserve the unique chalk-soil terroir. As the energy transition accelerates, critical minerals have become increasingly important, and the priorities of extraction for countries in the Global North are beginning to shift. The U.S., EU, and others are now exploring the possibility of on-shoring critical mineral mining - potentially bringing a divisive industry closer to home. This week, Alasdair talks to extraction expert Dr. Thea Riofrancos, who explains the tension between the harmful consequences of mining and the key role of extractive industries in facilitating the energy transition. She outlines the history of lithium mining in Chile, the environmental and human-rights consequences of extraction, and why we may have overestimated the quantities of critical minerals we actually need. Episode 396 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Alasdair McLean-Foreman, CEO & Founder of Teikametrics. It's another repeat guest! I think I'm up to 5 repeat guests on The VentureFizz Podcast and just like the 5-times club on Saturday Night Live, I might have to start thinking about getting some custom jackets made up for our repeat guests because they must be on to something special! Take Alasdair, who… five years ago, back on Episode 153, shared some predictions around eCommerce that were mostly spot on. So, I was eager to get his point of view on what's next especially in this radically evolving world of AI which we discuss at the beginning of our interview. He has an interesting perspective as he was one of the first third-party sellers on Amazon and his company, Teikametrics, has a front row seat as the AI marketplace optimization platform for leading brands. There's a lot that we had to catch up on like their new patented GenAI technology that has the opportunity to shake up how brands scale on platforms like Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and Shopify. He also recently brought on Sandie Hawkins, the former Head of TikTok Shop as the company's President to help scale to the next level. We cover all of these topics and more!
In this episode of "Ask the Expert" from Sprott Money, host Craig Hemke sits down with returning guest Alasdair MacLeod, former head of research at Goldmoney, to break down the alarming direction of global monetary policy. Alasdair explains why the real issue isn't the rising price of gold, but the collapsing purchasing power of fiat currencies, especially the U.S. dollar.
Storm's comin', and it is quite literally "mucky out". Alasdair forecasts peculiar precipitation with spells of weird science. The black rains that fell on one small Scottish parish in the 1860s have a variety of explanations, ranging from the odd (squids) to the really odd (Italy). Plus, we have a doozy of a theory from the man himself: Charles Fort. It's a delightful little cheeseboard of festering news this week! Come for the godawful startup that broke Rob, stay for the getting big mad at Labour and the way they keep laying tracks in front of fascists like a Wallace and Gromit tribute.
