A walk in the park turns out to be no walk in the park. Alasdair introduces James to Lullingstone Castle, home to both an aristocratic orchid hunter and the spectre of Colonel Meates - surely one of the meatiest ghosts in Kent. Straying from the path, we encounter Percy Pilcher (the unfortunate aeronaut), Thomas Becket (the spiteful saint), and a Roman beefcake by the name of Titus Manlius. Lazio fell to an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at home to Lecce on the final day of the Serie A season to drop out of the European places. Vittorio and Alasdair discuss a terrible end to a shocking season, debate the future of Marco Baroni and his players, and consider what needs to happen next. Hosted on Acast. Lazio impressed with a good performance led by the sensational Pedro in a 2-2 draw with Inter. The result left our top-four hopes hanging by a thread, but we still have a small hope going into the final day against Lecce. Vittorio and Alasdair discuss all the permutations for European qualification and make the (obvious) case for a Pedro contract extension. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A UK government agency recently announced it would spend £57 million on a controversial project to develop geoengineering technologies. The Exploring Climate Cooling Programme will fund 21 international research teams to conduct small-scale, controlled outdoor experiments to thicken Arctic sea ice and brighten clouds, to prevent global warming from increasing past irreversible tipping points. Geoengineering has long been a point of contention amongst scientists, environmental academics and conspiracy theorists - each firm in their beliefs about whether such interventions are necessary, effective, or risk irreversibly damaging the planet. Alasdair speaks with two academics studying geoengineering - Albert Van Wijngaarden and Adrian Hindes - who call for nuanced understanding and more productive conversation between the advocates and opposers of such radical interventions. They discuss the history of polar and solar geoengineering, the risks involved, and the lack of global governance. If you enjoyed this episode, stay tuned - we plan to explore geoengineering in more detail in the future. The wind whistles. The rain pours incessantly. It is also night time. Alasdair shelters in the only place he can in this bleak moor - under a big stone. But who's that fella coming down the track? Alasdair is back to join Vittorio to review the match, discuss where Marco Baroni is getting things wrong and consider the Champions League race Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It was crushing defeat in the Coppa Italia this week for Internazionale, and to next-door neighbors A.C. Milan no less. With that semifinal exit, the treble that Inter were loudly pursuing this season has evaporated. Now there are merely two competitions they're in a good position to win: the Champions League — if they can get past Barcelona in the semifinal — and Serie A.The latter is where they'll meet Roma this weekend for another highly difficult encounter, even at the San Siro. The visitors have not lost a league match since December, an incredible turnaround from a frankly disastrous opening period of the season, and they've zipped up the table to compete for a Champions League place. At the heart of it all is Claudio Ranieri, the 73-year-old Roman who came out of retirement to manage his hometown club for one final chapter (maybe) of a lifelong football romance. Here to get into all that ahead of kickoff is Alasdair Mackenzie, Rome-based writer for TNT Sports, Destination Calcio, Total Italian Football and more.If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a rating and review! It will help spread the good word. And as always, for kickoff times and storylines on all the other matches worth your time this weekend, check TheFootballWeekend.com. Hosted on Acast. Nearly half of the global agriculture market is controlled by four companies. This level of concentration - driven by decades of mergers and poor regulation - has allowed agribusiness “titans” to dominate the farming sector. Alasdair talks to Dr Jennifer Clapp, author of a new book about corporate domination of the farm sector and why it matters. Alasdair and Jennifer discuss how and why mass-merging has led to market distortions and high prices, and what solutions could improve the state of the sector. Dr. Jennifer Clapp is a Professor at the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo, Canada. She is a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub. Okay, hear me out. First off, this was re-recorded a couple weeks ago because i'm extremely good at backing up audio files from 2 years ago entirely in line with the professionalism this podcast is known for. Secondly, there's some audio issues in this that I can't get rid of, no matter how much I try (remember when I said this was recorded 2 weeks ago?), sorry about that. Point III: This isn't this weeks normal episode, that's still to come, and the rest of these will be additional free episodes just like originally promised. Fourthly, we used my near 2 year old notes for this and if i'm being entirely honest I reckon it shows, but for the next one (yes, we're actually doing all of these and finishing it) I've got a revamped set of notes ready so it should be a bit slicker. Anyway, enjoy the much awaited sequel to the running joke that you lot have been haunting me with for far too long. Tom welcomes back Alasdair Macleod, Head of Research at GoldMoney to discuss his insights into the silver market and its relationship with gold prices. He suggests that despite a seemingly undersupplied market, the price disparity between gold and silver does not reflect this reality. Macleod anticipates a significant shift in investor behavior once patience runs thin among those who have already bought into gold but yet to enter the silver market. The role of foreign investors, particularly central banks, in driving gold prices is highlighted. Macleod also emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of the ongoing credit bubble on financial markets and encourages listeners to consider reducing their exposure to credit. Alasdair expresses his views on Donald Trump's impact on gold prices, citing increased foreign demand due to Trump's status as an inflationist and his executive orders. However, concerns over tariffs and potential economic repercussions remain. Macleod also touches upon historical examples of tariffs and interest rates and their relationship with an economy's purchasing power. He emphasizes the importance of understanding this connection for investors during the upcoming credit bubble.
