Host Ricky Sacks and Co-Host Billie T are joined by Tottenham Hotspur Correspondent Alasdair Gold, as we look back at the past 10 months since Alasdair was last on the show with us. Before the opening game of the season, Thomas Frank declared he wanted Spurs to be competitive in multiple competitions. By the final day, It was Roberto De Zerbi who saved Tottenham Hotspur from total humiliation. This was a season when years of mismanagement and drift caught up with Spurs. It was a disaster and the club must ensure it does not happen again. Daniel Levy was removed from his position as chairman after nearly 25 years in charge. Frank was spotted drinking from a coffee cup that had Arsenal's badge on it. Frank ended up being sacked the following month and replaced by Igor Tudor, who lasted only 44 days before Roberto De Zerbi took over. Spurs only won three games at home and suffered 17 defeats in total. At times it felt like the drama was never-ending. On this show with Alasdair we break-down the campaign just gone and what led us to Roberto De Zerbi completing the most unlikeliest of final-day great escapes. Only one in three eligible lung cancer patients receives the targeted therapy they should get. That is not a failure of science. It is a failure of delivery. After more than two decades of precision oncology, biopharma has never had better tools: cell and gene therapy, in vivo CAR-T, antibody-drug conjugates, AI-enabled diagnostics, organoids, multi-omics, and global clinical data.Yet too many breakthroughs still fail to reach the bedside.Patients fall through fragmented systems.Data does not move cleanly.Community oncologists are overloaded.Tests are missed, delayed, or misread.Promising assets die in quarterly portfolio reviews. And healthcare systems built for pills, tablets, and chronic disease management are now being asked to deliver personalized medicine at scale. In this SPARK20 highlight episode, Alasdair Milton, PhD, Principal at KPMG and leader of the firm's Precision & Advanced Therapies practice, explains why the future of biopharma will not be decided by science alone. It will be decided by translation. From lab bench to boardroom. From data to decisions. From treatment to prevention.Alasdair brings more than 20 years of experience across life sciences strategy, commercial due diligence, precision medicine, advanced therapies, cell and gene therapy, biopharma M&A, diagnostics, and global healthcare transformation. This conversation moves from the precision medicine delivery crisis to China's biotech acceleration, from AI and organoids to trapped pharma assets, from lifelong wellness to the one skill every future biotech leader needs:The ability to translate complex science into business strategy, capital allocation, and patient impact. What You'll Learn in 22 MinutesWhy only one third of eligible lung cancer patients receive targeted therapy(00:01:53)And why precision medicine still breaks in everyday clinical practice. Why science keeps compounding even when systems fail(00:04:33)Including in vivo CAR-T, functional cures, gene therapy, and antibody-drug conjugates. Why innovation does not move in a straight line(00:05:20)How technologies can look dead for years before suddenly changing the market. Why China's biotech speed matters(00:07:36)How AI, organoids, scale, and execution are changing the global innovation map.Why great science dies inside Big Pharma(00:09:20)And how deprioritized assets can become billion-dollar companies when externalized properly. Why the industry must move from sickness to lifelong wellness(00:10:03)Alasdair's vision for a more proactive, preventive, data-driven healthcare system. Why pharma needs better ways to rescue shelved assets(00:13:06)Including examples such as SpringWorks, Cerevel, and new models for unlocking trapped value. How a 400-person Scottish island shaped Alasdair's worldview(00:15:07)The personal story behind his resilience, discipline, and leadership style. Why careers and companies are never linear(00:17:19)What Alasdair learned after moving to Boston and losing his role within weeks. Why the future belongs to translators(00:20:06)The most valuable skill in biotech: explaining complex science to business leaders, investors, and boards. How to connect with Alasdair Milton and the KPMG Precision & Advanced Therapies team(00:21:47)Quotes to Carry With You

Starting in the ruins of Finchale Abbey, we travel back to a time before the monastery was built (don't look for it, it's not there yet) and meet the notorious Saint Godric. In this episode, we sit down with Alasdair Lumsden, co-founder of Carbon Neutral Fuels, to explore how taking a screwdriver to a VCR led to his time in tech entrepreneurship, which eventually ended up in the world of sustainable aviation fuel. Alasdair walks us through the company's Power-to-Liquid e-SAF project, Project Starling — a commercial-scale facility planned for Workington, Cumbria, targeting 25,000 tonnes per year of SAF by 2031.We dig into the nuts and bolts of CNF's technology stack — solid oxide electrolysis (with Topsoe), Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (Johnson Matthey's FT CANS process), and upgrading technology (Honeywell UOP) — and how CNF is integrating waste heat recovery to improve efficiency and unit economics. Alasdair also explains the decision to skip the demo phase and go straight to commercial scale, why their CO2 sourcing strategy shifted from 100% direct air capture to a mix of biogenic sources, and how they secured a 2031 grid connection date by choosing Cumbria over more traditional industrial sites. On the commercial side, Alasdair discusses how CNF has raised over £11 million to date — including £7.4 million from the UK Advanced Fuels Fund across two rounds — and is now mid-way through a £24 million Series A, targeting patient capital and strategic investors. We also cover offtake strategy, the Revenue Certainty Mechanism, the hydrogen policy disconnect, and why Alasdair sees the UK's DFT as a genuine competitive advantage for SAF developers looking to de-risk before expanding internationally.

Last year, multilateral negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty broke down after countries failed to agree to limits on plastic production - as opposed to simply regulating plastic waste. This distinction between 'upstream' and 'downstream' measures to tackle plastic pollution is a point of contention between industry and campaigners, with the plastic lobby favouring recycling advocacy over efforts to curb plastic production. Alasdair discusses this issue with Dr Rob Ralston, who researches the different stakeholders within the industry lobby, and the ways in which this bloc has co-opted formerly radical policy frameworks, such as the idea of 'circular economy', to delay major policy interventions. Rob Ralston is a lecturer in Public Policy at the University of Edinburgh, and an expert in global health and environmental politics.Further reading: Click here for our other podcasts and articles on plastic pollution on Land and Climate Review. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to US and Israeli attacks on Iran has limited trade, causing skyrocketing prices - but not only for oil. Most fertiliser production relies on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Gulf nations including Qatar and Saudi Arabia are major fertiliser producers, and one third of the world's seaborne fertiliser trade usually passes through the Strait, which is currently unavailable. Other fertiliser producing nations are reducing production due to limited gas supply. Are food shortages inevitable? Alasdair is joined by Noah Gordon to discuss the international and environmental politics of fertilisers. They discuss fertiliser production, its uses and misuses, its role in global inequality and whether gas dependency can be avoided. With the recent 'AI Boom', the energy demand of computing has risen dramatically. As generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots such as Chat GPT, Claude, Copilot and Grok become more mainstream, tech companies are racing to build and power new data centres - the physical 'computer factories' that store and process our information and online services. This new infrastructure is significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions - but tech companies argue that the climate innovations and efficiency improvements catalysed by AI tools will offset negative impacts. Could such claims prove true, or are they greenwashed PR? Alasdair puts this question to writer and energy analyst Ketan Joshi, who recently authored a report on AI's climate impacts alongside several leading nonprofits. The team sat down with Alasdair Lumsden, one half of the Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF) founding team, and discussed CNF's plan to produce vast amounts of eSAF in the UK. About Alasdair Lumsden:Alasdair is Co-founder and Director of Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF), a UK-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel developer. About Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF):CNF was co-founded by Alasdair Lumsden and Sophie Zienkiewicz on the sidelines of COP26 in Glasgow in 2021. Based in the UK, CNF is endeavoring to replace liquid fossil fuels with a more sustainable alternative and developing their modular and scalable Power-to-Liquid (PtL) flagship facility called Starling, a commercial-scale eSAF facility under development in Workington, Cumbria. This facility will convert low-carbon electricity, captured carbon dioxide and water into 25,000 tonnes/year of synthetic kerosene with a 97% lifecycle GHG emissions reduction versus fossil kerosene. This is enough to deliver over 40% of the UK's mandated 2030 eSAF supply. To date, Starling has received £7.4m from the UK government.--Links:CNF site - www.carbonneutralfuels.com CNF LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/carbonneutralfuels

James takes Alasdair round the manor house of Chilham Castle, in Kent. Featuring some vintage names, a panoply of ghosts and some classic Shakeshaft misunderstandings. You want skeletons? We got skeletons mate, don't you worry! In manacles? Of course in manacles. See Alasdair On Tour! Vittorio and Alasdair reflect on a busy week for Lazio, with a Coppa Italia win over Bologna and defeat to Atalanta to discuss. We also talk about the news that the Stadio Flaminio project has been officially presented and what is next in Lazio's hopes of having a new stadium. Hosted on Acast. Vittorio and Alasdair are back to discuss a 2-2 draw away to Juventus that left us wondering if we should consider it two points dropped or one gained. We also talk about Nuno Tavares' comeback, Daniel Maldini as a false nine and preview a huge Coppa Italia quarter-final against Bologna. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In preparation for Alasdair's UK Tour, James has been digging up the dirt on Maidstone. He's found a cute little Kentish tale, plus a murderous bull straight out of Looney Tunes. This installment is longer than a minisode but shorter than an episode. It's another classic Loreboys midisode. See Alasdair On Tour in 2026! Vittorio and Alasdair review an eventful week where Lazio defeated Genoa 3-2 in an almost empty Stadio Olimpico. We discuss the stadium boycott and where the anti-Lotito protests will go from here, Alessio Romagnoli's future and if Nuno Tavares and Pedro could still make an impact this season Hosted on Acast. James leads Alasdair back into the depths of Wychwood Forest. Therein, the denizens of a peculiar farmstead make a terrible mistake while digging up a tree stump... As usual, the Loreboys offer fresh nuggets of insight and wisdom. And we might just have come up with a new form of forensic science to aid the police in the fight against crime. (It's fingerprints, but instead of fingers it's bums. It's bumprints.) See Alasdair On Tour in 2026! The Loreboys have returned! Alasdair kicks off Series 7 with the story of amateur ghost-hunter Rosina C. Despard. Her Cheltenham home was the site of one of the most well-documented hauntings of the 19th century... Or was it? Creaks on the stair! A rustle of cloth! A face hidden by a handkerchief! It simply has to be a ghost... Surely? We promise not to end every sentence this series with an ellipsis followed by a question... Or do we? See Alasdair On Tour in 2026!
