We may not exactly be God, but we are definitely here for Margaret this week as we queen out on 2023's adaptation of Judy Blume's “Are You There God? it's Me, Margaret.” Rachel McAdams glows in her mom era, giving us so many nuances in her own coming of age as Barbara Simon. We'll buy Kathy Bates as a Jewish grandmother in New York, but what if it was Caroline Aaron? We discuss parallels to Eighth Grade, PEN15 and A Little Princess, plus our own history being friends with the girls when we were 12, including the opportunity to play Mall Madness on a porch. We also tangent on the BSAs of Juno, performative prayer, sexy Jesus and the unlikely library of STARZ shows.

It Lives Inside is a horror film that reckons with a different culture and demons in America. They Came Together displays and spoofs on the horrors on trope romantic comedies with a tool that's simultaneous blunt and sharp. The Creator is a world set on fire with an AI war as the great American military might tries to stomp out the hordes of a new race.   Next Time: Totally Killer, Cassandro, Spaceballs   Recent Discoveries Luke: Apollo 11, Dumb Money Ralf: TMNT 1 & 2 Oscar: Saw X, Dumb Money, Are You There God? While I understand why Marvel would want to "age up" Cassie Lang in the form of Kathryn Newton, there's a chemistry between Rudd & Abby Ryder Fortson was amazing. With that said, she's moved onto a new franchise with Are You There God, It's Me Margaret starring the aforementioned Abby Ryder Fortson and Rachel McAdams, has Ryder as the titular character navigating everything from a new town, to boys, and growing up. Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, the director of my favorite film of 2016 in The Edge of Seventeen, does this film recapture that level of quality? Old Favorites: Judy Blume's Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret Description: I mean. Who needs a reason to revisit this touchstone?? Blume is having a moment–which is so well deserved. Your 12-year-old self will come rushing right back–in the very best of ways. Listen for Kimberly's analysis of the excellent prose, of why these books have never been out of print, and of why Margaret is actually way more about deep, engaging, serious questions about GOD than it is about periods.

Katai is back and to celebrate, she and Kelly went to the movies together IRL in order to cover Kelly Fremon Craig's adaptation of the Judy Blume novel, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," both of which are committed to 1) sensitively telling the story of cis-girl puberty woes and 2) using punctuation in the title (although actually it's missing a comma before "God," but we'll forgive them). They generally gush over the film (pun intended) and talk fantastic performances, humanizing the 'rents, getting misty, as well as tangent on Harry and Meghan and (because we are who we are) annoying Twitter behavior. Kelly Fremon Craig's winning new adaptation of Judy Blume's ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET is as gentle and good-natured as the other film in this pairing, Todd Solondz's WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, is acerbic and off-putting. But both films are frank in their own way about a stage of life that cinema often ignores, so after talking through MARGARET's warm and welcoming 1970s vision of suburban New Jersey adolescence, we bring DOLLHOUSE's grim and grungy 1990s depiction into the discussion to compare the films' respective takes on puberty, peer pressure, crushes, and bullying.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, ARE YOU THERE GOD?
