Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Food utensils that have been purchased or received from a gentile require Tevila (immersion) in a Mikveh before they may be used for preparing or eating food. The question arises as to how this Halacha is applied in cases of electrical appliances such as an urn, which will likely be ruined as a result of immersion in water. In some instances, manufacturers tell consumers that immersion will not ruin the appliance if it is left to dry for several days afterward. In other cases, immersion will likely harm the appliance even if one waits several days before using it, and the question thus arises how the obligation of Tevila would apply to such a utensil. Chacham Ovadia Yosef writes in "Halichot Olam" that in such a case, one should transfer ownership over the utensil to a gentile, and then ask permission to borrow the utensil. According to Halacha, a utensil that one borrows or rents from a gentile does not require immersion. Thus, one can circumvent the obligation of Tevila by legally giving the item to a gentile, and then using it only in the capacity of borrowing. Do the grates of one's oven and stove require immersion? One might argue that although generally they do not come in direct contact with the food, nevertheless, since one occasionally toasts bread and the like by placing it directly on the grates, they should require Tevila. However, Chacham Ovadia rules that in determining a utensil's status with regard to Tevila, we follow its majority usage. Since grates are much more commonly used in a manner that does not involve direct contact with food, they do not require Tevila, even if on occasion one places food directly on the grates. It should be noted, however, that the grate of a barbeque, which is intended for direct contact with food, indeed requires Tevila. Summary: If one purchases an electrical appliance used for preparing food, and it will likely be ruined as a result of immersion in a Mikveh, he should formally transfer ownership over the item to a gentile and then ask to borrow it, so that it will not require Tevila. Grates of stoves and ovens that do not normally come in direct contact with food do not require Tevila, whereas barbeque grates do require Tevila.

A teaching from 2016 - Gratitude cures 90% of spiritual ills but being ungrateful causes some problems. "I hate ingratitude more in a man than lying, vainness, babbling drunkenness, Or any taint of vice whose strong corruption Inhabits our frail blood...Ingratitude is monstrous; and for the multitude to be ungrateful, were to make a monster of the multitude." - William Shakespeare.

The Stupid History of Fireplace Grates
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The grates on a stove, which one uses throughout the year for cooking, require "kashering" before Pesah to become permissible for use on Pesah. The stove is used for pots that often contain Hametz (and, on some rare occasions, one might have placed bread directly on the grates), and therefore they may not be used for Pesah unless they undergo proper kashering. This is done by thoroughly cleaning the grates and then either immersing them in boiling water, or pouring boiling water on them directly from the kettle. As long as the water is boiling, pouring the water directly onto the grates (after they have been cleaned) suffices for rendering them kosher for Pesah. The same applies to oven grates. One must remove them from the oven, thoroughly clean them, and then either immerse them in boiling water (which is often not feasible because of their size) or pour boiling water on them. Electric hot plates and blechs can also be kashered in this fashion. They should be thoroughly cleaned, and then one pours boiling water on them directly from the kettle. One who wishes to be stringent should purchase new stovetop grates and oven grates, and a new blech, for use on Pesah. This is certainly preferable, though it is perfectly acceptable to kasher these items in the manner described.Tablecloths that have been used for Hametz may simply be run through the washing machine, on a hot water cycle, or dry cleaned, and then used for Pesah. No further measures are necessary to kasher tablecloths for Pesah. If one has a vinyl cloth that he uses over his table, it is proper to pour boiling water on it to kasher it for Pesah.Summary: Although it is preferable to purchase new stove and oven grates for Pesah, one may kasher them for Pesah by thoroughly cleaning them and then either immersing them in boiling water or pouring boiling water on them directly from the kettle. The same applies to electric hot plates and blechs. Tablecloths need to be simply washed in a washing machine to be rendered kosher for Pesah, but if one has a vinyl table cover, he should pour boiling water on it to kasher it for Pesah.

Today on The Literary Life podcast, our hosts continue their discussion of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Angelina, Cindy and Thomas kick off the book discussion by clarifying some confusion over the definition of a picaresque novel. They share some thoughts on the how stories communicate to us in a unique way that cannot easily be expressed in any other way. Other ideas brought up in this episode are the following: the home as a refuge from the world, the centrality of food and drink, friendship with an addict, the problem of trying to use books to teach virtue, and more! Cindy's 2022 Morning Time for Moms Summer Discipleship group is now open for registration. The theme this year is “Laughter and Lament.” Head over to morningtimeformoms.com to find out more and sign up! Thomas will be teaching a webinar on Napoleon Bonaparte later this month, as well as an introductory course on Russian Literature in July 2022. Learn more and register at houseofhumaneletters.com. Commonplace Quotes: A work of art speaks a truth we can't speak outright: the truth of the human experience. Love, joy, grief, guilt, beauty–no words can communicate these. We can only represent them in stories and pictures and songs. Art is the way we speak the meaning of our lives. Andrew Klavan He is led more by his ears than his understanding, taking the sound of words for their true sense…His ill-luck is not so much in being a fool, as in being put to such pains to express it to the world, for what in others is natural, in him (with much ado) is artificial. Thomas Overbury, in “A Mere Scholar” Granted that the average man may live for seventy years, it is a fallacy to assume that his life from sixty to seventy is more important than his life from five to fifteen. Children are not merely people: they are the only really living people that have been left to us in an over-weary world. Any normal child will instinctively to agree with your own American poet, Walt Whitman, when he said: “To me every house of the day and night is an unspeakably perfect miracle.” In my tales about children, I have tried to show that their simple acceptance of the mood of wonderment, their readiness to welcome a perfect miracle at any hour of the day or night, is a think more precious than any of the laboured acquisition of adult mankind… Kenneth Grahame To Althea, from Prison by Richard Lovelace When Love with unconfinèd wings Hovers within my Gates, And my divine Althea brings To whisper at the Grates; When I lie tangled in her hair, And fettered to her eye, The Gods that wanton in the Air, Know no such Liberty. When flowing Cups run swiftly round With no allaying Thames, Our careless heads with Roses bound, Our hearts with Loyal Flames; When thirsty grief in Wine we steep, When Healths and draughts go free, Fishes that tipple in the Deep Know no such Liberty. When (like committed linnets) I With shriller throat shall sing The sweetness, Mercy, Majesty, And glories of my King; When I shall voice aloud how good He is, how Great should be, Enlargèd Winds, that curl the Flood, Know no such Liberty. Stone Walls do not a Prison make, Nor Iron bars a Cage; Minds innocent and quiet take That for an Hermitage. If I have freedom in my Love, And in my soul am free, Angels alone that soar above, Enjoy such Liberty. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Sunset at Noon, published by Raemon on the LessWrong. A meandering series of vignettes. I have a sense that I've halfway finished a journey. I expect this essay to be most useful to people similarly-shaped-to-me, who are also undergoing that journey and could use some reassurance that there's an actual destination worth striving for. Gratitude Tortoise Skills Bayesian Wizardry Noticing Confusion The World is Literally on Fire... ...also Metaphorically on Fire Burning Out Sunset at Noon Epistemic Status starts out "true story", and gets more (but not excessively) speculative with each section. i. Gratitude "Rationalists obviously don't actually take ideas seriously. Like, take the Gratitude Journal. This is the one peer-reviewed intervention that actually increases your subjective well being, and costs barely anything. And no one I know has even seriously tried it. Do literally none of these people care about their own happiness?" "Huh. Do you keep a gratitude journal?" "Lol. No, obviously." - Some Guy at the Effective Altruism Summit of 2012 Upon hearing the above, I decided to try gratitude journaling. It took me a couple years and a few approaches to get it working. First, I tried keeping a straightforward journal, but it felt effortful and dumb. I tried a thing where I wrote a poem about the things I was grateful for, but my mind kept going into "constructing a poem" mode instead of "experience nice things mindfully" mode. I tried just being mindful without writing anything down. But I'd just forget. I tried writing gratitude letters to people, but it only occasionally felt right to do so. (This came after someone actually wrote me a handwritten gratitude letter, which felt amazing, but it felt a bit forced when I tried it myself) I tried doing gratitude before I ate meals, but I ate "real" meals sort of inconsistently so it didn't take. (Upon reflection, maybe I should have fixed the "not eat real meals" thing?) But then I stumbled upon something that worked. It's a social habit, which I worry is a bit fragile. I do it together with my girlfriend each night, and on nights when one of us is traveling, I often forget. But this is the thing that worked. Each night, we share our Grumps and Grates. (We're in a relationship and have cutesey-poo ways of talking to each other). Grumps and Grates goes like this: We share anything we're annoyed or upset about. (We call this The Grump. Our rule is to not go searching for the Grump, simply to let it out if it's festering so that when we get to the Gratefuls we actually appreciate them instead of feeling forced) Share three things that we're grateful for that day. On some bad days this is hard, but we should at least be able to return to old-standbys ("I'm breathing", "I have you with me"), and you should always perform the action of at least attempting an effortful search. Afterwards, pause to actually feel the Grates. Viscerally remember the thing and why it was nice. If you're straining to feel grateful and had to sort of reach into the bottom of the barrel to find something, at least try to cultivate a mindset where you fully appreciate that thing. Maybe the sun just glinted off your coffee cup nicely, and maybe that didn't stop the insurance company from screwing you over and your best friend from getting angry at you and your boss from firing you today. But... in all seriousness... in a world whose laws of physics had no reason to make life even possible, a universe mostly full of empty darkness and no clear evidence of alien life out there, where the only intelligent life we know of sometimes likes to play chicken with nuclear arsenals... ...somehow some tiny proteins locked together ever so long ago and life evolved and consciousness evolved and somehow beauty evolved and... and here you are, a meatsack cobbled togeth...
The Finns are a musical bunch. Neil has fronted the legendary Crowded House, sons Liam and Elroy play, and brother Tim led Split Enz and has made a heap of solo records. Back in 2011, Neil's wife Sharon joined him on a record too. They called themselves The Pajama Club and together with Alana Skyring from The Grates on drums, they made an album. It was around then I asked them to Take 5. I remember wanting to move in with Neil and Sharon after this chat; they're both so warm and laidback, and late nights at their place sound like a dream.
