In this week's episode, we discuss the legacy of Losercore, an aesthetic of the late 90s and early 2000s that celebrated the awkwardness of young adulthood and the sartorial idiosyncrasies of social outcasts, from orthodontia and ill-fitting gym uniforms to wire-frame glasses and dishwater-blond hair. We analyze the socioeconomic conditions that led to this period of loser glorification, identify key players (Todd Solondz, Paul Dano), cinematic touchstones (Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine), and generational anthems ("Teenage Dirtbag," "Buddy Holly"), and reflect on how the Internet has transformed today's young losers into threats to themselves and others.Links:Image board"The Birth—and Maybe Death—of Yuppiedom" by Walter Shapiro for Time"Loser: The Hero of the 1990s" by Grunge Included on SubstackThe Trap by Adam CurtisThe Nineties by Chuck Klosterman@yungkombucha420 on TikTok"Americans Need to Party More" by Ellen Cushing for The Atlantic"The Anti-Social Century" by Derek Thompson for The AtlanticLoser Generated Content: From Participation to Exploitation by Soren Mork PetersenBillie Eilish on having no friendsCelebrity with no friends blind item ("not Jessica Chastain")Emma Chamberlain closet videoBed rot talking stage TikTok / "Love in the Time of Bed Rotting" by Isabel Unhinged on Substack"The Story Behind The Song: Beck and the crowning of the ‘Loser' generation" – Far OutTeenage Dirtbag – Wheatus (Offical Music Video)Buddy Holly – Weezer (Official Music Video)Losercore TikTok boys: Slushy Noobz, Thomathy, Ben Awad, William ConradMarc Jacobs, Circa 2003: Long Hair, Neck Brace & Sweaty (PHOTO)Prada Spring/Summer 1996Marc Jacobs Spring 1999Marc Jacobs Fall 1999Vetements Fall 2019 MenswearBalenciaga Pre-Fall 2021 "Gucci's Beautiful Losers Hit New York" – Business of Fashion"The Book of Gucci According to Alessandro Michele" – 032c"Student Teaches Teacher" aka Jeff Bliss aka Friggin Packet Yo (Original YouTube Video)"Who's Afraid of Hasan Piker?" – Slate"Still Life (Betamale)" by Jon RafmanParty in their Blood – Cloudy Heart (Official Music Video)Bully (formerly @bully.incel.simp.hero) Duane Hanson – Saatchi GalleryDadsgiving by Chris Maggio This is a public episode. It's a 4K-packed week with classics of the genuine and cult variety with Peter Sobczynski catching you up on the week's physical media releases. There are titles from the emerging queer cinema of the ‘90s as well as, arguably, the best of the Todd Solondz oeuvre. There will be little argument about the best of British comedies and Peter makes one for what he considers may be the finest final film of any directorial career. Sidney Lumet does Agatha Christie justice and John Carpenter remakes a sci-fi classic. There is Woody Allen, Bob Hope and Elisabeth Shue facing off against a chimpanzee. Finally, Brian DePalma gets an upgrade on one of his most underappreciated, albeit controversial, films.  0:00 - Intro 1:08 – Criterion (Happiness 4K, Gregg Araki Teen Apocalypse Trilogy 4K) 27:08 – Mediabook (Go Fish 4K) 33:42 – Paramount (Stardust 4K) 38:44 – Kino (My Favorite Spy, The Ladykillers 4K, Murder on the Orient Express 4K, Link 4K) 1:11:16 - Warner Archive (Journey Into Fear, Conflict, A Prairie Home Companion) 1:29:51 – Shout Factory (Village of the Damned 4K) 1:37:25 – MGM (A Midsummer's Night Sex Comedy, September) 1:52:04 – Sony (Body Double 4K) 2:12:43 – New TV & Theatrical Blu-ray Releases 2:19:33 – New Blu-ray Announcements 2:22:09 - Outro

A Tripp Through Comedy

Our exit today has us trying to win a trip to Hollywood to become an extra in a film with positive moral values. This week's film is Superstar, based on Molly Shannon's Saturday Night Live character, Mary Katherine Gallagher. While the two hosts might start the episode with very different opinions on the movie, one of them actually manages to change the others mind a bit! Plus, some very odd findings in the IMDB keywords, lots of Todd Solondz talk, more Will Ferrell, a history of SNL movies, and creepy armpit smelling. And of course, Tripp manages to somehow bring Steven Sondheim into the conversation. Powered by Riverside.fm Theme Music by Jonworthymusic

In this episode of Faithful Politics, hosts Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram engage in a compelling conversation with veteran documentary producer and director Dan Partland. They delve into Partlin's latest film, "God and Country," exploring its thematic focus on the intersection of faith and politics, particularly Christian nationalism's impact on American democracy and faith itself. The discussion covers Partlin's career trajectory, his approach to documentary filmmaking, and the motivations behind "God and Country," offering insights into the complex dynamics of political and religious identities in the United States. The conversation also touches on the challenges and responsibilities of addressing such a polarizing topic, aiming to foster a deeper understanding among viewers and encourage critical reflection on the roles of faith and nationalism in shaping public discourse and policy.Guest Bio:Dan Partland is a veteran Documentary Producer and Director for Film & Television. His work includes several landmark Nonfiction Films and Series of the past two decades. He has twice won the Emmy for Best Nonfiction Series and been twice nominated, Nonfiction Producer of the Year, by the Producers Guild of America.Partland cut his teeth in film, apprenticing with cinema verité pioneer Albert Maysles before launching his own New York based indie film collective, OTHER PICTURES (OPIX), where he produced numerous independent features, both scripted and documentary. While at OPIX, Partland partnered with first-time director Todd Solondz to produce Solondz' debut feature WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, which went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and become a cult classic. Next Partland collaborated with first time director Aiyana Elliott on, THE BALLAD OF RAMBLIN' JACK; an intimate and personal portrait of her legendary father and the experience of growing up a folk singer's daughter. BALLAD went on to win the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and be recognized as a genre-defining film in the 1st Person Documentary space. In 2000 Partland joined forces with Academy Award nominated filmmaker RJ Cutler to create the ground-breaking, 13-part documentary series AMERICAN HIGH, for which Partland won the Emmy for Best Non-Fiction Series. In AMERICAN HIGH, Partland & Cutler used an authentic cinema verité process embedding with high school students in suburban Chicago for one year. Your hosts of Lost in Criterion were juniors in high school on September 11, 2001, and that certainly colors our opinion of Todd Solondz's Life During Wartime (2010). And so do current events. Solondz is also 25 years older than us, and while I agree, as Solondz says in one of the bonus features on this release, that the suburbs of New Jersey (where he grew up) and the suburbs of Ohio (where we lived in 2001) are not so different, I think that difference in generations is perhaps insurmountable. The gulf may keep us from fulling "getting" Solondz. I guess my point is that we spend a lot of time this week talking about how we would approach the metaphorical use of child abuse differently in a post-9/11 story, as we were 16 year old children on 9/11. And as is often the case, getting bogged down in what we wanted to see may keep us from fully seeing what Solondz is up to.

Do you like taboo subject matter in your movies? Well, the 547th edition of Have You Ever Seen is filled with it. There's pedophilia, suicide, violent sex fantasies, masturbation, infidelity and so much misery...yet writer/director Todd Solondz somehow also made Happiness entertaining. It's complicated material and it's more honest than most movies are about the horrible people within, but they're relatable human beings. Even the pedophile is. We got quite personal in this review and we talked about censorship and the irrational people who have the bullhorn these days. So trigger warning if you belong in that camp, but also trigger warning in general because this dark movie is often very funny and our gallows humour came out repeatedly. This week you might need to grab a box of tissues and that's not just because of our unrelenting dad sexiness but also because we're going to be getting all emotional in emotions week as we start things off by counting down the top 5 Tearjerkers, the movies that squeezed tears out of the empty space where our souls used to be.Todd Solondz's 1998 black comedy HAPPINESS is a movie so relentlessly dark I had to watch it with night vision goggles on. Sort of focusing on the unhealthy relationship between the Jordan sisters; Helen, a bored celebrity ice queen author with fantasies of sexual violence, Trish, an unfulfilled housewife trapped in a sham marriage and Joy, a sensitive but dim-witted free-spirit searching for love, this is also the kind of movie where mouth-breathing incels lounge around in their underwear making abusive phone calls whilst jacking off, a lonely frump seeking connection murders and dismembers her neighbourhood rapist and the final scene features an 11 year old boy triumphantly announcing they've achieved their first ever orgasm. Not to mention the film's most infamous scenes featuring Dylan Baker's Bill, a predatory psychiatrist which I have in fact now mentioned. HAPPINESS is not a bad movie but it is a deeply unpleasant one, with its depressive mood and view of mankind as putrid, self-involved slaves to their nastiest impulses becoming absolutely over-bearing by the end. Maybe that's the point, this isn't the most profound movie of all time.In our final section of the show we'll be exploring anger via the medium of animated birds and fascist pigs trapped in an endless cycle of violence with Netflix's ANGRY BIRDS SLINGSHOT SERIES.  Slingshot? Slingshit more like.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Why is 90% of this film's comedy just poking fun at Kevin's weight? Is Paul Blart a perfect Todd Solondz character? And is there anything more dated in this film than all the Segway comedy? Maybe the playing of Rock Band? PLUS: Much praise for the underrated teen comedy, Angus! Paul Blart: Mall Cop stars Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays, Raini Rodriguez, Shirley Knight, Steve Rannazzisi, Peter Garety, Bobby Cannavale, and Adam Ferrara as Sergeant Howard; directed by Steve Carr. Kelly Fremon Craig's winning new adaptation of Judy Blume's ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET is as gentle and good-natured as the other film in this pairing, Todd Solondz's WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, is acerbic and off-putting. But both films are frank in their own way about a stage of life that cinema often ignores, so after talking through MARGARET's warm and welcoming 1970s vision of suburban New Jersey adolescence, we bring DOLLHOUSE's grim and grungy 1990s depiction into the discussion to compare the films' respective takes on puberty, peer pressure, crushes, and bullying.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, ARE YOU THERE GOD? Not all girls want to play with dolls. It's been 27 years since Todd Solondz's Welcome to the Dollhouse, and we're here to tell you that it's still savage AF. Seth Subin from @jerkofalltrades joins us again to discuss this  pitch black coming-of- age comedy, and we really just want to give Dawn Wiener a hug and tell her it's all going to be alright.  We get into the 90s icon that is Heather Matarazzo as the ultimate outsider in us all.  Dawn launched her to bigger movies like 54, Princess Diaries, and Saved.  Matarazzo's Dawn Wiener is just as potent now as it was when we first got our hands on a copy of this movie. We talk about Brendan Sexton III, as the type of damaged bully we all remember growing up, and the beautiful himbo Steve Rogers (played by Eric Mabius). Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.
