When his filmmaking career stalled during the pandemic, Toby Lockerbie turned to the one place that had never stopped inspiring him: the Universe. With no background in visual effects, he taught himself the tools needed to transform complex space science into cinematic stories using everyday objects and beautifully crafted visuals to make the Cosmos feel human. His channel, Epic Spaceman, now reaches millions and has earned multiple Webby Awards for its innovative approach to visualizing scale, awe, and accessible science. This week on Planetary Radio, Toby joins host Sarah Al-Ahmed to discuss the creation of Epic Spaceman, how visual metaphors can change how we understand the Universe, and why awe remains one of the most powerful tools for science communication. Then we welcome Bruce Betts back for What’s Up, where we reflect on the end of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Akatsuki mission to Venus.

Back in October of 2018, I plugged in with Rock-and-Roll-Hall-of-Famer Ace Frehley at his hotel suite in Hollywood, California. Having just re-listened to our hour together, I have to say: Wow, it's a cool episode — a great hang, and one that is all the more meaningful now that the Spaceman has passed. To honor Ace's life and music, I am re-posting the episode here for you to re-enjoy. I think you'll find it's a powerful portal through time that puts you in the room with the true rock star and the true New Yorker that was Ace Frehley — the true rock legend who inspired legions of young people to pick up the electric guitar, including many who have gone on to become famous rockers themselves. Here is the show exactly as it ran seven years ago. ———————— ORIGINAL 2018 SHOW NOTES: Founding Kiss lead guitarist ACE FREHLEY, aka "the Spaceman," has released a hard-rocking new solo album called just that — SPACEMAN. Plugging in one of his favorite '59 reissue Les Pauls, Ace sits down with me to jam a little, as well as detail the writing and recording of Spaceman, reflect on reuniting (for two songs) with Gene Simmons, and, of course, look back on his legacy — a wild ride that spanned everything from a youth spent surviving the streets of the Bronx to adult years surviving adventures with the Hall-of-Fame rock band that made him famous. Hope you enjoy it! —JUDE GOLD, host and creator, No Guitar Is Safe

In this week's episode, the guys salute friends of the show, mourn a few legends (and some not-so-legends), and wade through everything from celebrity deaths to pervy psychics to Dodgers delusion. Plus: Jay Fizzle's baby army, Charlie Sheen's “good company,” and a UK porn crisis. It's the irreverent blend of dark humor, pop culture, and sports cynicism that keeps The Baller Lifestyle the most honest show in podcasting. RIP Roundup The Grim Reaper's been busy, and Brian and Ed have thoughts: Ace Frehley, Kiss guitarist and Spaceman – dead at 74. Jesús Montero – Yankee phenom turned Venezuelan tragedy. Doug “Muscle Hamster” Martin – Tampa Bay legend meets a bad end. Sam Rivers (Limp Bizkit), Ed Williams (Naked Gun), Penelope Milford (Heathers), Sandy Alomar Sr., Drew Struzan (poster legend), and even D'Angelo (the R&B one, not the living one). Plus: why dying on your couch might be underrated. ️ Sports (Sort Of) Who's getting Otani'd next? The ALCS looms large. The Great Dodgers Debate: Why everyone hates them (and Brian doesn't care). Ex–NFL RB arrested in a 3 p.m. Wednesday sex sting — and why that's weird. Aaron Rodgers' “Mario” touchdown celebration goes wrong. Bill Belichick's “bossy” new intern and Cal's scoreboard troll job. Make-A-Wish employee loses her job after calling ICE on a Dodgers fan. Bonus Bri Corner Hot doctors: bad idea or good motivation? The “ball cyst” confession revisited. It's still thought of as the World Series to which all other World Series' are compared. The Boston Red Sox vs the Cincinnati Reds. A classic 7-game series that had as much drama, controversy, rain, Hall of Famers, and unforgettable moments as baseball fans could ever hope for. The Big Red Machine was a juggernaut in '75 led by Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Tony Perez and their Hall of Fame skipper Sparky Anderson. Yet, the upstart Red Sox were matching them at every turn with Rookie of the Year/MVP Fred Lynn, Yaz, El Tiante and Carlton Fisk playing inspiring baseball. The only thing that could stop either of these teams was Mother Nature. Rain interrupted the series on mud;tiple occasions, but once they got on the field… some of the most thrilling baseball ever played was on full display. None more thrilling than the 12th inning home run by Carlton Fisk that ended a captivating Game 6 and sent the series to a 7th game. The shot of Fisk waving the ball fair as it hugged the left field line and then bounced off the foul pole is a moment that has stood the test of time for half a century and will be forever remembered by baseball fans as long as they still play this game. The starting pitcher for Game 7 for Boston was Bill Lee… the Spaceman. One of the gams true characters and at this time, one of the games best left-handed starters. The winner of 17 games in 1975, Lee had thrown 8 beautiful innings in Game 2 only to leave in the 9th when the Reds rallied for a 3-2 win. Now, in Game 7, he once again tossed 6 innings and came out with the lead in the 7th only to see the Reds rally again. Two wonderful starts for Lee, two no decisions… and a lifetime of what if's… 50 years later, the Spaceman is still as outrageous and entertaining as he was back in Boston in the mid 70's. He tells us how he couldn't stand Don Zimmer as a manager and how wearing a Rolling Stones shirt cost him and the Red Sox the 1972 AL East Division. He recalls how as a teenager he had a job as locksmith and locked some of the most famous people in the world out of their own houses. He tells us how he almost died on the pitching mound pitching for the Savannah Bananas and how he's lucky to still be alive. And mostly, he just tells us all sorts of things you can't believe happened… but they did.  One of the most revered and loved Red Sox pitchers in their storied history… Bill The Spaceman Lee on the Past Our Prime podcast… Listen and download wherever you get your podcasts. Ironically enough, he has never been to Cadillac, which just celebrated the 50th anniversary of the visit from KISS in 1975."Ace Frehley's passing was on the level of Eddie Van Halen's passing. I mean, different players, but they made us want to be musicians." David said. "Not only musicians, but rockstars!" Isn't that the truth? He said he didn't know Ace that well, but well enough. "You know, so Ace and I became friends, not close friends. I mean, we have each other's cell phone. I'd usually text him every year for his birthday. And me and Frank Bello would text him because he played a solo on our Altitudes and Attitude record."David speaks to the tour, the numerous gigs he has coming up, including the Monsters of Rock Cruise, where he'll play with Jeff Scott Soto, and tons more!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hot on the platform boot heels of his 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ACE FREHLEY has announced Origins Vol. 1, a collection of 12 newly recorded classic rockers from Ace s formative years featuring some of the biggest names in music, on April 15, 2016. Most notably, KISS frontman PAUL STANLEY joins ACE on Free's cult hit Fire and Water. This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS' 1998 reunion album Psycho Circus.Other guests are none other than Slash trading leads on Thin Lizzy's classic Emerald, Lita Ford singing and playing lead on The Troggs #1 smash hit Wild Thing, Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 plays guitar alongside Ace as he sings his classic KISS composition Parasite for the very first time, as well as Jimi Hendrix's Spanish Castle Magic. Pearl Jam's Mike McCready also plays guitar with Ace as he finally sings his KISS Alive! mainstay Cold Gin. Ace s cover of Cream s White Room is also an instant gratification track and saw its premier by Rolling Stone early in February 2016.Origins Vol. 1 is the follow up to Space Invader, released in 2014. Space Invader was Frehley's first studio album in five years, and the LP debuted at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, scoring the highest charting position of any KISS solo album ever, and marked Frehley's first return to the Top 10 since KISS' aforementioned 1998's Psycho Circus in 1998.Space Invader, received high praise from critics. Rolling Stone wrote:Gene Simmons has claimed Ace Frehley doesn't deserve to wear Kiss' Kabuki clown paint, but the former Spaceman's first solo LP in five years says otherwise. While the Associated Press hailed: The original Kiss lead guitarist has recorded his best solo album since his groundbreaking self-titled album in 1978.Paste Magazine also confirmed: Space Invader is a good rock album, and it s an even better guitar record.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
