Insider secrets or simply lesser known facts... We cover some topics that have come uop with clients recently.Superfoods are nonsense - The term ‘superfood' is unregulated and doesn't mean anything (note: same with the word ‘natural').- Well known superfoods = blueberries, goji berries- 100 calories worth of goji berries will give you 250% of your RDA vitamin c. 100 calories worth of broccoli will give you 429% of your RDA vitamin c. It'll also cost a fraction of the price.Supplements are white labelled - they all come from the same factory- A lot of supplements aren't FDA approved.- All foods and drugs affect different people in different ways. For example, in contraceptives, there are genetic factors with how many oestrogen receptors you have and how much water you retain. Cheaper foods- Dried beans/lentils - typically at least half the price than buying canned- Frozen or canned fruit and vegetables are often cheaper, particularly out of season but often fresher and with equal or more nutrients.Freezing food doesn't make it last forever. Fat content does.- You know the ziplock bags that have writing on them and a place for you to write the content and the date. Yeah, that's for a good reason. You don't need to cleanse. Your liver does everything cleanse-y you need it to do without any special help.Movement:You have to workout for several hours per day several times per weekHeadlines such as "7-minute Abs" and "You only need to exercise for "11 minutes per dayhttps://www.acefitness.org/education-and-resources/professional/expert-articles/7750/exercise-for-only-11-minutes-a-day-a-case-study-in-misrepresenting-the-science/?topicScope=exercise-scienceYou need to do crunches and sit ups to get absWalking on the treadmill is a good warm up for strength trainingA certain time of day is better to workoutCardio equipment machines don't accurately report calorie burnSpot training to lose fat.....DOESN"T WORK!!!!Sweating means you're burning fat.....nope, your body is regulating it's temperatureConnect with Us!If you have any questions, comments, concerns or topics that you would like us to cover, please reach out to us! #95: Fat is good. Say it again, fat is good. Empty carbs, bad. If you lived through the 80s as I did, they vilified fat and we pounded ourselves full of low and no fat carbs. The result this? I'll read it to you as quoted by the NCBI: The prevalence of obesity changed relatively little during the 1960s and 1970s, but it increased sharply over the ensuing decades—from 13.4% in 1980 to 34.3% in 2008 among adults and from 5% to 17% among children during the same period. Then...the national adult obesity rate has increased by 26 percent since 2008 and today the U.S. adult obesity rate stands at 42.4 percent, the first time the national rate has passed the 40 percent mark. No fat has made us fat. Now let me clarify; a pint of Ben & Jerry's is 16 oz, and if I have it, I eat it all. The whole pint. A pint of Chubby Hubby has 1,320 calories and 80g of fat. A 16 oz slab of salmon has 944 calories and 59g of fat. However that Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby also packs in 140g of sugar and the salmon has zero. The fat you want is from fish, meat, olives, avocado, seeds and nuts, and some dairy...but not the Ben & Jerry's kind. Stay tuned and we'll help you decipher what you want. Body Fat Hormone Guide - What Your BODY FAT Tells You About your Hormones

Dr. Westin Childs Podcast: Thyroid | Weight loss | Hormones

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2021 12:53

This body fat hormone guide explains what your body fat tells you about your hormone levels. Have fat in your upper arms? It could be from your estrogen and progesterone. Have fat in your bell? That's cortisol. The list goes on. Your hormones give you a LOT of information about what is happening inside of your body. The food that you eat is important in determining body fat accumulation but your hormones tell that fat WHERE to go. Let me rephrase: Eating a lot of extra food WILL cause weight gain but where that body fat accumulates depends on what is happening with your hormones. You can use this information to get valuable information about your hormones and which hormones you may have a problem with. Why is this important? Because it's often hard to pinpoint hormone problems and it's even more difficult to understand hormone lab tests. Many doctors do not specialize in this area so they are also less than helpful. This body fat guide is NOT a perfect science, however. Often times you may suffer from a combination of hormone imbalances which overlap with one another. But, in my experience, this information is usually very helpful. Body fat hormone guide: Fat on your upper arms/lower legs is usually caused by imbalances in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Body fat in your belly or abdominal body fat is usually caused by insulin resistance and problems with cortisol. Body fat in the trunk or neck area is usually caused by excess cortisol (this is when your cortisol actually starts to increase). The inability to build muscle mass or decreased muscle mass is usually caused by decreased testosterone. Body fat which is evenly distributed over your entire body is usually caused by thyroid problems and/or leptin problems. Fat in the thighs, butt, and breast area is usually caused by high estrogen. Weight fluctuations of 5-10 pounds that occur monthly are usually caused by progesterone problems (usually a high progesterone). Once you identify which problem you have you can then start to treat it with supplements, hormones, lifestyle, and so on! In Part 3 of the Purple Patch series on performance nutrition, Matt Dixon, along with leading performance nutritionist, Scott Tindal, lift the veil on nutrition and fueling with nutrition case studies around real-life Purple Patch athletes. The goal for all? To frame a smarter common-sense approach to nutrition and fueling in order to build a long-term platform of health and resilience. This final case study is centered around the elite amateur triathlete, Andy Williams. Like many triathletes, Andy is seeking top-level performance in all areas of his life, with his primary goal being an IRONMAN World Championship qualification. His first few attempts had been disastrous, but all-too-common for many multisport athletes. He's gone from GI distress from overconsumption to bonking because of underconsumption. Like many, prior to working with Purple Patch and FuelIn, Andy didn't have a grasp on his eating and fueling habits. He didn't know his sweat rate, body composition, amount of fuel he should be taking in, and what types of food he should prioritize around training and racing. This led to confusion and paralysis, dangerous experimentation, frustration, and poor results relative to training potential. With the guidance of Scott and Matt, Andy developed strategies around: His Baseline numbers - knowing exactly where he was starting from and where he needed to be Repeated testing and nutrition practice in stressful training situations to mimic hard race conditions Hot Water Immersion and/or Sauna protocols for heat acclimation Better organization and specificity around his eating and nutrient timing for energy management, hunger control, and body composition. In this discovery process, Andy upskilled his knowledge, felt empowered and confident during races, and achieved his goal of qualifying for both the 70.3 and IRONMAN World Championships. This work included no voodoo science, no magic elixirs, and no secrets. As you'll hear, the only requirements were a massive desire to learn, organization around habits, and repetitively applying that knowledge. 0:00-04:05 Welcome and Episode Introduction 04:06-07:40 Squaddie Update - Upcoming Events include a Discussion with Inside Tracker, a Live IRONMAN Florida Course Overview, and a public webinar on the topic, "So You Want to Do Your First IRONMAN." Fat-positive sex and relationship coach and fellow podcast host Dawn Serra returns to the podcast to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our relationships with food and highlighting existing social injustices, how diet culture robs us of our ability to embody pleasure, desirability politics and its links to diet culture and oppressive beauty standards, navigating romantic relationships while in recovery, and so much more. Plus, Christy answers a listener question about how to tell whether your eating and exercise are intuitive or compulsive amid COVID-19 stress. (This episode originally aired on May 11, 2020.) Dawn Serra has dedicated her life to unraveling the cultural stories that impact our relationship to our pleasure, our bodies, and our lives. Dawn is considered a leader in the field of sexuality and relationships, with a focus in pleasure for people recovering from eating disorders and those in fat bodies. She is a therapeutic sex & relationship coach, a Certified Body Trust® Provider, speaker, podcaster, facilitator, consultant, and entrepreneur. Arthur Schwartz was the restaurant critic and executive food editor of the New York Daily News for 18 years. Perhaps what he's best known for is as a chameleon—he's successfully worked in radio, print media, cookbook publishing, TV, and teaching. Today Arthur talks about: Pork, Fat, Salt And here is Arthur's recipe this week! MARINADE SECHE A dry rub for pork, adapted from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. 1 Enough for 8 pounds of pork – chops, tenderloin, ribs 2 teaspoons dried thyme or sage 3 tablespoons salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon ground allspice 1 teaspoon ground bay leaf (see note) (optional) Rub the thyme or sage between the palm and heel of your hands, to make it powdery. Combine with the other ingredients and mix well. Use a rounded teaspoon of mixture for every pound of pork. Rub it in and let stand at room temperature – no more than 2 hours -- until you are ready to cook the meat. Or, wrap in plastic and refrigerate up to 48 hours. Note: I use a small Krups coffee grinder (very inexpensive and mine is now 30 years old) to grind spices – put bay leaves in and pulse then let run until leaves are powdered.

It showed that periodic fasting elevated a variety of markers associated with improved aging and health. We've continued to discuss fasting on this show ever since. But something has changed. Like most things, we believe if a little is good a lot is better. There's a thin line between the hormetic effects of intermittent fasting and the biological perturbations of starvation. If you're someone who's tried fasting and it failed you, here's why. And to those of you just finding fasting, listen closely because you can save yourself a lot of grief.

Today we talk with Dr. William Hsu and his insights into the 5 day fast mimicking diet. He discusses the 3 types of fasting, the significance of our circadian cycles, and the importance of fasting in order to activate significant longevity mechanisms which help promote our overall well being. Hosts: Dr. Mark Young // Dr. Jeffrey Gladden Guest: Dr. William Hsu Highlights from the podcast: (0:55) Introduction (1:51) It's not because of what we know but about what we're asking and how we go about learning. (2:02) Dr. Gladden highlights The common underlying question seems to be, “Can I get back to where I was, health wise?” (4:00) Understanding the game that we're in. (8:25) In the practice of addressing all of these elements people are getting and feeling better overall more so than they have in the past. (9:10) Introducing Dr. William Hsu, Endocrinologist and graduate from Harvard (10:00) Dr. Hsu begins discussing “The Fasting Mimicking Diet” (12:40) Fasting has in large part been overlooked in the medical field. (15:30) Taking a look at Fat, the body's mechanism between feedings. (15:52) Fat is the largest organ in 70% of the American population. (17:05) What is normal? When do we eat (Has an impact on our health) and what do we eat (nutrient composition)? Circadian rhythm. (18:20) The body has an internal mechanism that tells us when to eat and when not to eat. (18:35) Illumination has changed our behaviour. (19:55) Obesity creates resistance to lupton secretary hormone that signals the body when to stop eating. (21:30) The science of Fasting began perhaps 20 or 25 years ago. (22:22) What are the molecular mechanisms that connect nutrition, fasting, and longevity? (22:50) Pulling back from nutrients actually triggers longevity genes and helps promote longer living. (23:15) Fasting actually creates an anti-fragile state. (24:00) Repeated cycle of Fasting and then eating. (24:45) Repeated cycles of fasting and feeding. (25:00) Autophagy — Self consumption. (28:06) What is the optimal hormetic stress? (28:41) Intermittent fasting. (31:21) Fasting for longer than 2 days is referred to as periodic fasting. (32:50) Autophagy does not begin until you have entered into the periodic fasting phase. (33:24) In the 5 day mimicking fast, Dr. Hsu, how did you select the types of foods involved in this fast? (33:55) Dr. Hsu, defines the 3 types of fasting, behavioral, ketogenic and molecular. (34:44) The Fasting Mimicking Diet or fast addresses the molecular or cellular fast. (35:10) Each cell has a receptor or ears and eyes that are referred to as “nutrient sensors.” (36:43) Being on and off the gas in order to activate longevity mechanisms. (37:28) Human physiology is all about cycling. (39:07) After that period of fasting, what should you do to regain those nutrients? (40:45) A low calorie diet will cause an individual to lose muscle mass. Fasting changes body, emotion, and behavior. (42:12) x1 a month for the first 3 months and then quarterly afterward (43:22) Would you want to fast when utilizing hormones? (44:40) The importance of cycling with growth hormone and recuperation. (47:45) A lot of people feel better when they are fasting. Mental clarity, more energy and more active. That being said, it will not be the time you get the most gains. (49:17) Fasting changes the hormone bdnf which helps promote mental clarity. (57:45) The game is to modulate hormetic stress (1:00:44) Dr. Hsu, what are the 3 most important takeaways for fasting? Life goals trump health goals, bring someone along on this journey, and start.
