Aging is inevitable. Being misled about it isn't.In this episode of Plastic Surgery Uncensored, Dr. Rady Rahban breaks down the true biology of aging — and why it's far more complex than just “wrinkles.” Collagen and elastin decline. Fat shifts and disappears. Bone resorbs. Muscle thins. Circulation changes. Then you layer in sun exposure, stress, lifestyle, and genetics. Aging isn't one event — it's a cascade happening simultaneously.Dr. Rahban explains what can realistically slow the process — SPF, medical-grade skincare, retinoids, properly used Botox, disciplined lifestyle choices — and what's mostly marketing noise. He also dives into filler misuse, overpromised devices, social media illusions, and why “doing more” often makes people look worse, not better. Most importantly, he answers the question everyone eventually asks: When is it actually time to consider surgery? This episode is the foundation. This is episode three of Fat Fertility 101, and today we're diving into my absolute favourite topic: myth-busting. If you're in a bigger body and want to get pregnant, you've probably heard things like "fat people can't get pregnant" or "you need to lose weight first" or "you'll definitely get gestational diabetes."I'm here to tell you that so much of this is complete bollocks. Today we're going through the most common myths about fat fertility, and I'm sharing what the research actually says. Because you deserve to know the truth, not just what healthcare providers assume based on bias and fatphobia. In this episode, we cover:- Why the myth that "fat people struggle to get pregnant" is rooted in anti-fatness, not evidence, and what's actually true- The research on how long it takes fat folks to conceive (spoiler: it's one to two months longer, and that's about healthcare access, not our bodies)- Why weight loss research is deeply flawed and what actually matters for fertility (hint: it's behaviours, not the number on the scale)- The truth about PCOS, weight, and hormones, and why being fat doesn't cause hormonal issues- What the research really says about pregnancy risks in bigger bodies, including the actual statistics (not the fear-mongering versions)Useful Links:Download: Fat Person's Guide to Getting PregnantBook a Fat Positive Fertility Roadmap CallFollow me on InstagramEmail me a question for a future episode Get full access to Fat and Fertile at fatpositivefertility.substack.com/subscribe

Are you ready to STOP Guessing and START working from Within? You train consistently. You walk, lift weights, and maybe even do cardio or Zone 2. You eat "clean," focus on protein, avoid junk—and yet fat loss has stalled, muscle feels harder to build, and your body looks softer than it should. If that's you, this episode is for you. In this deep-dive rabbit hole episode, Coach Debbie Potts unpacks why fat loss stalls in fit, disciplined, high-performing adults—especially in midlife—despite doing all the "right" things with exercise and nutrition. Here's the truth most people never hear: Fat loss resistance isn't a motivation problem. It's not a willpower issue. And it's rarely a simple calorie problem. It's a root-cause, metabolic, and nervous system issue. In this episode, you'll learn: Why fat loss stalls when your body shifts into metabolic protection How chronic stress, under-fueling, and over-training quietly suppress fat oxidation Why "normal" labs don't tell the full story How mitochondrial dysfunction blocks fat loss and muscle rebuilding Why hormonal issues are often downstream effects—not the starting point How poor digestion, bile flow, and incomplete elimination sabotage fat loss Why more exercise and cleaner eating often make things worse What Resting and Active Metabolic Testing (PNOĒ) reveal that standard tests miss Coach Debbie explains how loss of FLOW—from nervous system dysregulation, depleted mitochondria, poor recovery, and blocked waste removal—causes the body to clamp down, conserve energy, and resist change. You'll also learn why the solution isn't pushing harder, cutting more calories, or adding another protocol—but restoring the right order of operations: ✔️ Safety before stress ✔️ Energy before effort ✔️ Structure before clearance When these systems are supported, the body stops fighting you—and results return. If you're tired of guessing, stuck in trial-and-error, and ready to understand why your body is responding the way it is, this episode will change how you look at fat loss forever. Ready to Stop Guessing and Start Working From Within? If this episode resonated and you're ready to uncover what's really holding your body back, we invite you to schedule a complimentary 15-minute Discovery Call with the FROM WITHIN team.

Send a textThe biology of fat tissue, estrogen's role in metabolism and health, and how exercise interacts with these processes, especially during menopause.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Adipose tissue basics: White fat primarily stores energy in large lipid droplets, while brown fat burns fatty acids for heat via high mitochondrial density; white fat can “brown” with exercise or certain foods like capsaicin.Fat distribution & health: Subcutaneous fat (under skin) is more insulin-sensitive and less problematic than visceral fat (around organs), which links to metabolic issues; females store more subcutaneously pre-menopause, shifting to visceral post-menopause.Estrogen signaling: Estradiol binds nuclear and membrane receptors to regulate gene expression and mitochondrial function; it enhances insulin sensitivity and browning in fat cells, with receptors like ER-alpha feminizing fat distribution.Fat storage: Fat cells enlarge (hypertrophy) more than multiply in obesity, leading to hypoxia, inflammation, and insulin resistance; excess fatty acids spill to liver and muscle, worsening metabolic dysfunction.Menopause effects: Estrogen drop causes visceral fat gain, reduced energy expenditure, insulin resistance, and higher metabolic disease risk; symptoms include hot flashes and reduced exercise motivation, modeled in rodents via ovary removal.Exercise & estrogen links: Exercise boosts estrogen receptor expression and mitochondrial density in fat, mimicking estrogen's browning effects; synergism may explain reduced exercise responsiveness post-menopause.Brain-fat connections: Estrogen in the nucleus accumbens influences exercise motivation and fat browning; manipulations there alter running behavior and adipose metabolism in rodents.ABOUT THE GUEST: Victoria Vieira-Potter, PhD leads a lab at the University of Missouri, studying how estrogen and exercise influence adipose cells.RELATED EPISODE:M&M 174 | Adipose Tissue & Body Fat: Obesity, Insulin, Leptin, Fertility, Weight Loss & GLP-1 Drugs | Sean HartigSupport the showHealth Products by M&M Partners: SporesMD: Premium mushrooms products (gourmet mushrooms, nootropics, research). This episode covers: • Mic-628 Could Reset Your Body Clock and Cut Jet Lag in Half A new circadian drug candidate, Mic-628, has demonstrated the ability to shift the body's internal clock and significantly reduce jet-lag recovery time in early human studies. In controlled simulations, participants experienced faster realignment of their sleep-wake cycles and improved daytime performance compared to standard approaches like melatonin and light timing alone. Dave explains how this compound targets a core clock pathway, why eastbound travel is biologically harder than westbound, and how pharmacologic chronotherapy could become a serious performance tool for frequent travelers and shift workers. He also connects circadian alignment to obesity, insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk, and cognitive decline, outlining what this breakthrough could mean if safety data continues to hold. • Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/top/ • Late-Life Depression May Signal Parkinson's or Dementia New research from Shanghai Jiao Tong University found that new-onset depression in older adults is strongly associated with increased risk of Parkinson's disease and dementia. Dave reframes this finding as a brain health signal rather than a purely psychiatric issue, explaining how inflammation, microglial activation, vascular health, and neurodegeneration intersect with mood changes. He breaks down why sudden depression in someone with no prior history may warrant deeper cognitive testing, sleep evaluation, and metabolic screening instead of simply prescribing an antidepressant and moving on. This story highlights the importance of treating mood shifts as early biological data in a longevity framework. • Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/02/260210040623.htm • Speed-Training Brain Games Reduced Dementia Risk by 25 Percent The long-running NIH-funded ACTIVE trial found that a specific speed-of-processing training program reduced dementia incidence by roughly 25 percent over two decades. Unlike memory or reasoning exercises, this visual processing speed protocol produced measurable long-term protection. Dave explains why reaction time and processing speed may be core capacities tied to cognitive resilience, and how structured brain-training programs descended from this research can be treated like strength training for the mind. Instead of vague advice to “stay mentally active,” this data supports building deliberate, trackable cognitive training into a midlife longevity plan. • Sources: – NPR summary: https://www.npr.org/2026/02/09/nx-s1-5702423/modest-mental-exercise-can-reduce-risk-of-dementia-for-decades-study-finds – Psychology Today analysis: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/build-your-brain/202602/new-study-means-the-age-of-dementia-prevention-begins-now • Moderate Coffee Intake Linked to Slower Brain Aging A large analysis of roughly 130,000 participants found that moderate coffee consumption, about one to three cups daily, was associated with markers of slower brain aging and lower dementia risk. Dave explains why moderate, morning-weighted caffeine intake may align acute performance benefits with potential long-term brain protection. He breaks down the dose curve, why more is not necessarily better, and how to use coffee strategically without compromising sleep or circadian rhythm. Rather than framing caffeine as either a miracle or a villain, this study supports intelligent, personalized dosing as part of a broader brain-health stack. • Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-00409-y • Kratom Crackdowns and the Future of Supplement Freedom Regulators are tightening restrictions on high-potency kratom derivatives such as 7-hydroxymitragynine, with new bans and stricter warning requirements emerging at the state level. The FDA continues to treat kratom and its concentrated derivatives as unapproved drugs with opioid-like effects, while local jurisdictions are targeting specific formulations linked to adverse events. Dave breaks down how this represents a broader shift in how edge-case compounds are regulated, why supply volatility and underground markets can increase risk, and what this means for biohackers who experiment with gray-area tools. He also explains how evolving enforcement strategies could shape future access to peptides, nootropics, and other advanced compounds. • Sources: – Kansas City coverage: https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/strong-high-weak-laws-7-oh-ban-kratom-regulation-moves-forward-in-kansas-city-missouri – Florida policy coverage: https://www.wgcu.org/health/2026-02-04/kratom-advocates-tout-its-properties-but-legislators-want-strict-warnings-about-the-herbal-supplement – Legal landscape analysis: https://www.lumalexlaw.com/2025/10/09/kratoms-legal-future-how-states-and-the-federal-government-are-responding/ – FDA background: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-kratom All source links are provided for direct access to the original reporting and research. In this episode, Ben Azadi explains the five metabolic levels of fat loss and why most people feel stuck despite dieting, exercising, and eating “clean.” Fat loss is not about willpower or calories. It is about hormones, inflammation, and metabolic signaling. Many people fail because they are using the wrong strategy for the metabolic level their body is currently in. Ben breaks down each level, from the Frozen Phase, where the body is in survival mode and unable to burn fat, to Fat-Burning Freedom, where fat loss becomes effortless and sustainable. You will learn: Why caloric restriction and excessive cardio backfire How insulin resistance and inflammation block fat loss Why eating clean is not enough without proper timing and protein How intermittent fasting, strength training, and recovery reset metabolism What it truly takes to lose 25–50+ pounds and keep it off This episode reframes fat loss as a metabolic progression and provides clarity for anyone who has struggled with plateaus, rebounds, or frustration on their health journey.

A few recent media pieces have us wondering if the GLP-1 backlash is finally beginning, and if so, why is all of the coverage still so anti-fat?VirginiaWe're going to use two primary texts for this conversation, but I also want us to talk more generally about how we're seeing the conversation shift, because I feel like there's been an amorphous shift.CorinneI think the initial craze has died down and we're starting to see a more nuanced conversation.VirginiaWhich in many ways is good. There's more nuance on both sides, but there's still a lot of harm being done in the way the media is framing this conversation.CorinneFor sure. VirginiaExhibit A on that front is a piece by Dani Blum that ran on January 15 in the New York Times. The headline is The Hard Truth of Weight-Loss Drugs: You Probably Need Them Forever. Corinne what is your immediate first reaction to that headline?CorinneNo shit, Sherlock. Why were people confused about this?VirginiaI guess people were. It seemed obvious that if a drug makes you lose weight, and you go off the drug, you won't continue to lose the weight.CorinneUnfortunately, except for maybe antibiotics, that seems to be how drugs work. You have to stay on them.VirginiaThere's a lot that comes up for me in this piece. It's looking at new research, bringing to light the fact that when people go off the weight loss drugs, which many people do because they can't tolerate the side effects and it's too expensive, they just get tired of it. There are lots of reasons that people fatigue about being on a weekly injection drug. They're seeing now that people regain the weight. This is being framed as a grave disappointment and a surprise in the article.CorinneNot to me, but to Oprah.VirginiaOprah particularly. Oprah was surprised. They referenced the fact that even Oprah said that she had stopped taking a weight loss drug cold-turkey for a year and then gained back 20 pounds. "I tried to beat the medication," she told People Magazine. It was then she realized it's going to be a lifetime thing. Brilliant marketing for Weight Watchers, Oprah. She thought she could go off it, but you can't. You should be on it forever. So buy your GLP-1s from Weight Watchers. Of course she wants us to be on it forever. She has a business incentive to make that work. It gets into ableism. Why is it problematic to be on a medication for the rest of your life? I have asthma. I expect to use an inhaler to manage that for the rest of my life. I have sleep apnea. I expect to use a CPAP for the rest of my life. Most people with mental health conditions expect to be on an SSRI for the rest of their life. Why is that a problem?CorinneI think there's something about human nature where people think, I don't want to be on a medication for the rest of my life. I've heard so many people say that.VirginiaOften it's the main resistance to starting a medication. Why? What is it about that that makes us sad?CorinneWe want to believe that we're strong and independent and don't need pills to make us ok.VirginiaYou and I are going to wear glasses for the rest of our lives.CorinneI am extremely screwed. So many medications, so many glasses.VirginiaIf the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm out in the first week because if they break my glasses or I lose an inhaler, I'm sorry, I'm not going to try that hard to survive. Even my acid reflux medication - I don't have debilitating acid reflux - but it's irritating. I would be out.CorinneSame. VirginiaTake me now. CorinneI take multiple medications every single day that I would be lost, if not dead, without.VirginiaI don't understand the aversion to that because it's great that I get to breathe through the help of medication. I'm a big fan.CorinneI think what you're hinting at is it's ableism.VirginiaIt's ableism. We want to believe we can overcome these challenges. We see it especially in conditions that are weight linked in any way. This is why people get told to diet before starting a blood pressure or cholesterol medication when those drugs work really well to manage those conditions ... Corinne... and diets don't.VirginiaAnd diets tend to not do so. Is it such a moral failing to have to go on a statin? I don't think so.CorinneThe other thing they're not talking about directly is - and we've talked about this before - that studies show people who take these drugs for conditions like diabetes and/or insulin resistance, don't tend to stay on them long-term because they're hard drugs to be on. VirginiaYeah.CorinneThis article is so sad for people who got to lose weight on these because they will have to be on them forever if they want to "keep the weight off." It's also sad for people who need to take them to manage chronic conditions. These drugs suck in a lot of ways and people don't want to be on them.VirginiaThat's a valid reason to think, I don't want to be on a drug for the rest of my life if it's giving me terrible side effects. My inhalers don't give me terrible side effects. I just like breathing and want to do it all the time. I'm an oxygen addict. If it's a medication that's giving you side effects, I understand not wanting to be on it for life. For folks who are pursuing this just for weight loss, independent of metabolic health, maybe that's a reason to reflect on whether you need to do that. It is a depressing thing to say, "I will be on a medication that gives me diarrhea, fatigue or whatever side effects, but at least I can be a smaller size." That feels like something to reflect on. That reflection is nowhere in this article, however.CorinneThe article doesn't mention side effects at all, does it? VirginiaIt mentions that it's why a lot of people in the studies are going off the drugs. It's this Catch-22 where they're saying, Oh, people are saying, wow, it's so expensive, or, wow, I have terrible side effects, so I go off it. Then they're framing it like those people were quitters. That they gave up. On the other hand, some of this aversion around "you wouldn't want to be on this medication for the rest of your life" is another layer of anti-fatness. The message is we shouldn't let fat people get away with thinness this way. We don't want them passing for thin because they can stay on a GLP-1 forever. We want them to do the "real work" of weight loss. The idea that you could only achieve weight loss by staying on the medication forever makes the weight loss feel fake to people. It's interesting because all intentional weight loss is fake to some extent. It's all manipulating your body in a direction it doesn't naturally want to go in. So why do we penalize medication-based weight loss versus excessive-running-based weight loss? There's also a nice shout-out to RFK, Jr., who also thought the drugs would just be a short-term fix for people and then we'd go back to eating beef tallow to stay thin. Turns out that's not science, but I don't think we're surprised he's not science. Another flavor of anti-fatness in this piece is the casual normalization that you could do this the old fashioned way. In talking about folks who are able to lose the weight even after they go off, the article says:It's not impossible, but it is extremely difficult. Dr Hauser estimates that fewer than 10% of her patients have successfully kept off 75% or more of the weight they lost after going on a GLP-1 without turning to another weight loss medication or undergoing bariatric surgery. "Those are the people that are working out two hours a day, tracking what they eat. They're working really hard," she said. "I haven't had anyone that just tapers off and isn't really putting that much thought into it and just keeps the weight off. I've never seen that happen."That's just casual normalization of eating disorder behavior. Working out two hours a day and tracking what you eat is not a normal way to live.CorinneThe choice is either drugs or an eating disorder.VirginiaThat's not interrogated by this piece, or in any of the discourse I've seen around the whole idea that you have to be on it forever. It's either you have to be on it forever, or we expect you to do this the old fashioned way, like a good fat person would.CorinneIt's also getting into the Rosey Beeme of it all. She lost some weight with a GLP-1 and then was like, Well, I guess weight loss surgery is the way to go here.VirginiaRight, to continue her health journey. I haven't checked on her in a while. Do you know how that's all going?CorinneNo, I don't and I don't honestly want to know. I just think that will become a more common storyline where people are saying, I didn't want to stay on this drug. It didn't lead to permanent weight loss, but maybe bariatric surgery will.VirginiaWell, that's depressing.CorinneSpeaking of influencers, the second article that we wanted to discuss today ran at the beginning of January in Vulture. It's titled ‘Less People Click If You're a Size 16' How plus-size influencers are faring in a GLP-1 world.VirginiaThis one is paywalled. CorinneI'm glad we're talking about this article because I saw so many people whispering about it on social media before I saw it, and then I saw a lot of folks sharing it. The gist of it is that plus-size influencers are not making as much money as before. They're not getting as many brand deals, etc.VirginiaThey're not getting brand deals from fashion brands and other lifestyle brands, which was interesting to me. The plus-size mom influencers, brands don't want them to show the car seat or the stroller anymore.CorinneI think a lot of plus-size influencers would make money from beauty skincare deals. That seems to be where a lot of the marketing money is. Even that area is slowing.VirginiaThe article talks about how one explanation, in addition to the rise of GLP-1s, is the rise of the tradwife aesthetic. An influencer named Joanna Spicer is interviewed quite a bit in the piece. She says:People in the industry, according to Spicer, are “afraid to say anything. It's being danced around. I've been told that I don't fit the criteria to work with the brand because they're more into the tradwife aesthetic. I'm like, ‘Got it.'”With the tradwife aesthetic, a baseline of thin is a given, right? They're all willowy thin blondes like Ballerina Farm. It's interesting that it's not just thin, but the whole Little House On the Prairie conservative fundamentalist perspective. That's what is trending right now. CorinneIt's very depressing. I like Joanna Spicer and that is not her aesthetic. There are plus-size influencers that lean more in that direction who are also suffering.VirginiaBecause they're not leaning enough in that direction.CorinneThey're not living on farms in Utah. I also thought an interesting part of this was her saying that it's being danced around, that no one's straight up saying what's going on.VirginiaOn the flip side, we've also seen (and reported on) a lot of plus-size influencers becoming not plus-size, or attempting to become not plus-size by sharing their GLP-1 journey. While we've had valid criticisms of the way Rosey Beeme and others have articulated those journeys by using a lot of anti-fat rhetoric, I do understand that when you've made your body your business, and now the business is changing, you feel a lot of pressure to change your body to keep up with things.CorinneThis article doesn't mention it, but there have been a couple of brands recently announcing they're not going to make plus sizes anymore, one of which is Christy Dawn, which is a big tradwife aesthetic brand.VirginiaI never did get a Christy Dawn prairie dress while they made them in my size. Now I guess I never will.CorinneI did try one once. It's really not my aesthetic, but it didn't seem nice.VirginiaI kind of wish you had photos. I really can't picture you in a tradwife dress.CorinneI put it on and was horrified.VirginiaYou had a reaction to that like I have to those boiler suit jumpsuits where I feel trapped, have a panic attack and I can't get them off.CorinneThere was too much shoulder. I didn't like it.VirginiaIt's the whole milkmaid thing.CorinneI like my shoulders covered.VirginiaYeah, not your aesthetic. All of this tradwife aesthetic taking over influencer culture and who's getting brand deals also very much ties into how much this is driven by the political climate right now, which is obviously a dumpster fire. Here is another excerpt from the piece:One vice president and an influencer marketing agency who asked to remain anonymous, said that while they haven't seen brands explicitly push back against working with plus-size creators. They are far more hesitant to sponsor any creator who gets even remotely political. What is acceptable now politically may not be in the future, and to avoid any issues, they don't want any voices that are not controlled internally from their side, he said. That made me wonder if fat influencers are more likely to be left wing and progressive than thin influencers. We don't have any data, but my instinct is yes.CorinneThey're probably more likely to be outspoken about size inclusivity, at least.VirginiaPeople think fat liberation is not political or it's not considered part of political action, and it is part of it. They also wrote:"The trend to move away from plus-size clothing aligns with the trend to move away from DEI. It's all related,” says Monica Corbin, a stylist at a plus-size fashion brand. “We had this big explosion during COVID around inclusivity, and I just think there's been the biggest backlash."So what's happening in influencer culture is just a microcosm of our whole country right now?CorinneThere is a part of this article that was so sad. Joanna Spicer was talking about how not being able to get work in your area of expertise makes you feel like a loser. That it's demoralizing and you feel like you've done something wrong. And you don't want to speak out about it because you don't want to screw yourself over in the future. It sounds so isolating.VirginiaThere's often a lot of pressure on influencers not to be transparent about the business model and the money, which is something we see in almost every female dominated industry. Anytime you have an industry that's majority women, people tend to be underpaid and you're encouraged not to talk about money, which is why all of my writer friends know I am extremely transparent about money. Because I feel like this is how any of us make any. It doesn't surprise me that people were so hesitant to go on record for this story because they think they have so much to risk if they say these brands are paying them less. But it also enrages me because these brands are treating you terribly. How else do we put pressure on them to do something different and make different choices?CorinneI don't know, but it's scary to do that now, especially when it feels like there's fear of political retaliation.VirginiaMaybe this is me grasping at a strand of hope, but I do wonder if the fact that Vulture did this story is a positive sign. Will this kind of media coverage put pressure on brands to be more inclusive again? You could read this piece and think, What is Virginia talking about? There's no GLP-1 backlash. The fact that the piece exists feels like a tiny bit of backlash. Or am I just grasping?CorinneWe'll see. It's probably going to take eight years, but I think at least some of the shine is off.VirginiaIt's hard to say that we're definitively in a backlash, or in a moment of change. I don't think we are. I think we are in a moment of increased nuance, and that's where we've landed. There's value in that. There's value in the conversations becoming more nuanced. The last piece we wanted to talk about was Amanda Richard's recent essay about her own experience taking GLP-1s and her take on where we are in this moment. It's called The return of thinness, without the reckoning. What are your thoughts on this piece?CorinneI thought it was really interesting. I read it this morning and haven't fully digested it. The most interesting part to me was this part near the end where she says:What this moment reveals isn't hypocrisy, it's preference, preference for ease over effort, relief over reckoning, for changing bodies instead of changing the rules that they're judged by. Fat acceptance faltered not because it was wrong, but because it asked more of people than a weight loss transformation ever could. She's getting at this moment in culture where people have lower tolerance than ever for friction. We want everything to be as easy as possible, myself included. That's not always what's best for the world, or even ourselves.VirginiaShe's arguing that we're not in a backlash, but that the rise of GLP-1s has legitimized the pursuit of thinness in new ways. She wrote:What's changed isn't the desire to be thin, but the way that desire is explained. It no longer has to pass through shame, discipline or denial, instead arriving framed as care, responsibility and common sense. we've had moral alibis for thinness before diets, program, supplements, lifestyle changes, but they were always imperfect because they still smelled like wanting. They required visible discipline. They demanded effort. They asked people to accept failure when their bodies didn't cooperate. Medicine is a better alibi.I thought that was pretty dead on.CorinneThat's interesting, although we had health as an alibi before.VirginiaWe definitely did. But she's right that making it something that doctors prescribe, that you have to do, and you have to do in very specific ways in order to adhere correctly to it, does feel different from when doctors say, Try to lose some weight and, you know, walk more. It's vague and nebulous and pushes people over to diet culture.Because you're accessing it through consumerism it feels more like something you want, like a choice you're making. There's aesthetic components. I'm doing this celebrity's plan, you know. It feels legitimate now that you're doing it as a responsible choice for yourself because a doctor prescribed it. It's not to say that the medical choices people are making to do these drugs are always wrong, or that it's a bad choice for everybody. Again, it's a great medication for managing diabetes. Because all of the research dollars in the world go towards these drugs, they are discovering other new benefits of them, and that's great if we don't want people to not have those benefits. CorinneWe didn't mention that the whole premise of the piece is that she's taking a GLP-1 for a condition, and it has helped tremendously.VirginiaShe's had some weight loss as a side effect, but that wasn't the primary goal. Fat acceptance needs to keep making more space for those stories and that reality. That is why we added the Anti-Diet Ozempic Life chat room on Burnt Toast, because I was hearing from readers ashamed and confessing to me that they were on a GLP-1 and not having a place to talk about how to do that with integrity and in alignment with their fat liberation values. I was thought, Well, we're doing something wrong if we're making people feel bad about their own individual choices. That's what the other guys do. That's not what we're about. The conversations there have been fascinating and super instructive to me. I've learned a lot. Everybody who's navigating this, if you've identified that fat liberation is one of your values, you have a responsibility to interrogate this thing that Amanda's articulating, how much of this is a moral alibi for thinness, and what does that mean if you're using medicine as your alibi to achieve thinness because of all the other reasons that thinness is valued.CorinneAlthough, in our culture, how can you not? There's always some element of "Being thin is good? Being thinner Is better?"VirginiaBeing prettier? I'll have better access to things. I don't think wanting that for yourself is "wrong" because how could you not want it?CorinneIt's the water we're swimming in. It's hard to make a neutral choice.VirginiaThere is no neutral choice. Articulating that tension to yourself is valuable versus just dressing it up in "I am doing this for x, y and z health reason. I don't care about being thin." Let's be honest. Of course we all care about that a little bit. We're in an interesting place with this stuff. I'm curious to hear what folks think. How you resonated with these articles and what else you're seeing in the discourse. I am glad for the increasing nuance and I wish mainstream media could spot its anti-fat bias even sometimes.

What if the line between “medicine” and “forbidden” has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with permission? This episode gives you a clear framework for understanding peptides, research chemicals, and performance enhancement so you can think for yourself instead of outsourcing your biology Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dylan Gemelli for a candid, unfiltered conversation about the underground world of biohacking, research chemicals, and human performance. Dylan is a long-time biohacker, educator, and researcher who came out of the bodybuilding world and spent more than a decade studying peptides, SARMs, nootropics, and gray-area compounds. He brings first-hand experience, deep research literacy, and a rare ability to explain what these compounds actually do, where the risks are, and why most doctors will never talk about them. Together, they unpack what “research chemicals” really means, why peptides technically fall into that category, and how legality often has little to do with biological reality. They explore compounds like MK-677, S4, and other SARMs, how they interact with growth hormone, muscle, strength, and recovery, and why some of these tools can be more powerful than peptides when used with intention and restraint. Dave also shares his own experiences rebuilding his health using underground tools, why he refuses to ask for permission to take care of his body, and how performance enhancement fits into longevity, metabolism, and real-world function. You'll Learn: • What research chemicals actually are and why peptides fall into that category • How compounds like MK-677 stimulate growth hormone and affect muscle and recovery • Why SARMs differ from steroids and where the real risks come from • The difference between tobacco and nicotine and why low-dose nicotine can support brain optimization • How performance enhancement fits into longevity, metabolism, and functional medicine thinking • Why strength and neurological drive matter more than size alone • How to think clearly about supplements, nootropics, and biohacking tools without fear or hype • Why taking responsibility for your biology is not cheating Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade is the top podcast for people who want to take control of their biology, extend their longevity, and optimize every system in the body and mind. If fat loss feels harder than it should and healing seems slow no matter what you try, the problem may not be your discipline. It may be your nervous system. In this conversation, I explain why a chronically dysregulated nervous system can block healing, fat loss, and hormone balance no matter how perfect your protocols look on paper.  Your body is always choosing survival first, and when it perceives constant stress, it will not prioritize digestion, repair, or metabolic efficiency. I walk you through how your brain interprets everyday stress the same way it would a life-or-death threat, keeping you stuck in fight or flight.  This is why cortisol stays elevated, inflammation lingers, and progress feels frustratingly slow. I break down why this isn't a mindset issue or a lack of discipline, but a physiological response rooted in your nervous system.  We dive into the role of the vagus nerve and how it connects your brain, gut, hormones, and stress response. I explain what vagal tone is and why improving it creates the conditions your body needs to feel safe enough to heal.  You'll learn simple, practical vagus nerve–supporting practices you can use daily without adding more overwhelm. We also talk about why these tools are supportive, not magical fixes, and how they enhance everything you're already doing. If you're dealing with stubborn fat loss, gut issues, thyroid challenges, or chronic stress, this episode lays the foundation you may be missing.  Nervous system regulation isn't optional or fluffy. It's essential. For years, endurance athletes have been told that eating low-carb is the key to becoming “fat adapted” and improving performance. That narrative was recently resurfaced in a high-profile review by Tim Noakes — but does it actually hold up when we zoom out? In this episode, I break down the Noakes narrative review, explain what the science does and does not show about fat oxidation, and clarify a critical point that often gets missed:

Learn exactly how to set your protein, carbs, and fats for muscle building and fat loss using a flexible approach that works long-term: witsandweights.com/macros--Do carbs make you fat?Are spikes in blood sugar and insulin a problem for health or weight loss?Maybe you've been cutting carbs or tried keto or carnivore, yet your strength training progress has stalled, your recovery feels sluggish, and you're still not seeing the body composition results you want. The problem isn't your discipline. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of what insulin actually does (especially if you lift weights).Insulin is not a "fat-storage hormone" but a nutrient-partitioning hormone whose effects depend entirely on context: your training status, muscle mass, and energy balance. Learn how resistance training changes the way your body handles carbs, why lifters over 40 actually benefit from strategic insulin spikes, and how muscle tissue acts as a "sink" for glucose that determines where your nutrients go. It's not about eating unlimited carbs but understanding why carb tolerance is built through strength training and how to use that to your advantage, and to stop fearing spikes in blood sugar.Whether you want body recomp, trying to build muscle while losing fat, or wondering why your low-carb diet isn't working despite consistent strength training, this episode gives you an evidence-based framework to rethink your nutrition strategy. Plus, get a simple post-workout protocol that can improve your next-day training performance.Timestamps0:00 - Why carbs and insulin don't automatically cause fat gain3:20 - How training context changes what insulin does with your food7:25 - The real reason lifters fear carbs (and why it's misguided)11:55 - What insulin actually does (nutrient partitioning explained)18:40 - How carbs support muscle building, recovery, and strength training performance24:20 - Fat loss and insulin (why energy balance matters more than spikes)29:20 - Acute insulin spikes vs. chronic dysfunction (the critical difference for body recomp)

This episode covers: • Longevity Influence In The Epstein Files A new DOJ document release tied to the Epstein investigation pulled physician and longevity influencer Peter Attia into the spotlight, after reports showed he appeared in the files more than 1,800 times and CBS News pulled a planned rebroadcast of its 60 Minutes profile. Dave breaks down why this story matters beyond headlines: longevity relies heavily on trust, authority, and influence, and when those foundations are shaken it exposes how fragile centralized expertise can be. He explains how biohackers can protect themselves by diversifying information sources, understanding mechanisms instead of personalities, and building health strategies that don't collapse when one voice disappears. • Source: https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/cbs-news-pulls-peter-attia-60-minutes-segment-epstein-1236650930/ • Age-Reversal Gene Therapy Enters Human Trials Life Biosciences received FDA authorization to begin the first U.S. human trial of a partial epigenetic reprogramming gene therapy in the eye, using three Yamanaka factors to restore function in damaged retinal cells. Dave explains why eyes are the ideal first testing ground, what partial reprogramming actually means, and why this marks a shift from longevity theory into real clinical testing. He also clarifies what success would and would not mean for whole-body rejuvenation, and how to separate legitimate gene-therapy advances from consumer products that only claim to affect biological age. • Source: https://fortune.com/2026/01/30/billionaires-longevity-aging-fda-human-clinical-trial-life-biosciences/ • Continuous Ketone Monitoring Moves Toward Reality Wearable continuous ketone monitoring is advancing beyond finger-stick meters, with companies adapting the same model that made continuous glucose monitors mainstream. Dave explains why this is a major upgrade for metabolic flexibility, keto diets, fasting, and diabetes risk management. He breaks down how real-time ketone data can reveal patterns missed by spot checks, and why biohackers should think ahead about data ownership, integration, and how ketone signals interact with glucose, sleep, stress, and training. • Source: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/global-market-blood-ketone-meters-140900796.html • Injectable, Wireless Brain Implants Without Surgery Researchers are developing nano-scale, wireless brain implants capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier without open surgery, opening the door to a new class of neural interfaces. Dave connects this research to other circuit-level interventions like sound and light stimulation, explaining the broader shift from targeting molecules to tuning brain networks. He also addresses the ethical risks, including consent, privacy, and neuro-surveillance, and why biohackers should track this space early rather than after it becomes normalized. • Source: https://longevity.technology/unlocked/longevity-news-roundup-week-5-2026/ • Generic GLP-1 Drugs Could Reshape Global Metabolic Health India's Sun Pharma is preparing to launch a generic semaglutide-style injectable as patent protections expire, signaling a major price drop and access expansion for GLP-1 drugs. Dave explains why this could transform obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease management worldwide, while also highlighting the risks of muscle loss and metabolic weakness if these drugs are used without proper training and nutrition. He shares how biohackers should think about stacking GLP-1s intelligently, with resistance training, protein intake, and long-term maintenance strategies. • Source: https://longevity.technology/unlocked/longevity-news-roundup-week-5-2026/ All source links are provided for direct access to the original reporting and research. 18-year-olds wake up fresh because their repair system still works. Grab a generous 30% discount on any STEMREGEN product with: http://stemregen.co/dave30 Dave Asprey sits down with Christian Drapeau, a neuroscientist trained at McGill University and a leading researcher in stem cell science. Christian pioneered a therapeutic approach called Endogenous Stem Cell Mobilization, authored the bestselling book Cracking the Stem Cell Code, and developed the concept of stem cell enhancement. He is the Founder and CSO of STEMREGEN, where his work focuses on helping the body release and use its own stem cells more effectively. Together, they break down why many injected stem cells never survive long enough to help, how the lungs trap a large percentage of IV stem cells, and why releasing your own stem cells into arterial circulation changes the outcome. They explore stem cell decline as a core driver of aging, tissue degeneration, and chronic inflammation, and explain why fasting is currently the only intervention shown to rejuvenate stem cells through autophagy. You'll hear why a three-day fast has measurable effects on bone marrow aging, how stem cells act as signaling molecules that coordinate repair across the body, and why mitochondria play a massive and underappreciated role in stem cell renewal and tissue regeneration. The conversation also covers scar tissue, fibrosis, recovery from injury, and why healing quality matters just as much as healing speed. You'll Learn: • Why stem cell decline, not simple wear and tear, drives aging • How fasting supports stem cell rejuvenation through autophagy • Why many injected stem cells die in the lungs before helping tissue • How releasing your own stem cells differs from IV stem cell therapy • Why mitochondria are central to stem cell function and repair • How scar tissue and fibrosis form when repair fails • Why recovery quality determines long-term resilience and longevity Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. STOP intermittent fasting if you think it automatically keeps you young. In this episode, you'll learn why short-term fasting results can mislead long-term aging outcomes, and how duration, frequency, refeeding, and protein intake determine whether fasting supports longevity or quietly accelerates decline. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Valter Longo, one of the world's leading longevity researchers with over 30 years of experience studying aging, nutrition, and disease prevention. Dr. Longo is the Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California's Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at IFOM, the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan. He is the author of the bestselling book The Longevity Diet and was named one of TIME Magazine's 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets. Together, Dave Asprey and Dr. Longo explain why many people focus too heavily on short-term effects and extrapolate them incorrectly across a lifetime. They break down how intermittent fasting differs biologically from multi-day fasting, why five-day fasting cycles trigger deeper cellular changes, and how insulin, IGF-1, mTOR, and growth hormone shape aging, regeneration, and disease risk over time. The conversation covers protein and amino acid intake, muscle preservation, frailty risk, and the tradeoffs between strength, function, and longevity. They explore ketosis, fasting-mimicking diets, stem cell activation, mitochondrial function, neuroplasticity, and why equilibrium and cycling matter more than constant restriction. Dave and Valter also discuss supplements, nootropics, creatine, carnivore-style eating, metabolism, sleep optimization, and how AI may eventually personalize fasting and nutrition based on individual biology rather than population averages. You'll learn: • Why short-term fasting benefits do not predict long-term longevity • How fasting duration changes gene expression and cellular regeneration • The difference between intermittent fasting and multi-day fasting • How protein and amino acids influence mTOR, IGF-1, and aging • Why muscle, strength, and longevity must be balanced, not maximized • When ketosis overlaps with fasting and when it does not • Why supplements can disrupt biological equilibrium • How AI could support future personalization in fasting and nutrition Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. In this conversation, I sit down with Dr. Adam Boender, chiropractor-turned-peptide educator, to unpack how men can reclaim their health, energy, and recovery—without shortcuts or hype.   Dr. Adam shares how peptides actually work at the cellular level, why most men don't have a deficiency problem but a communication problem inside their bodies, and how strategic tools like peptides, nutrition, and movement work best when paired with discipline and intention. We go deep on recovery peptides, fat loss versus weight loss, GLP-1 medications, food quality, inflammation, and why no supplement or peptide replaces doing the hard work. This episode is a masterclass in health, responsibility, and long-term performance for men who want their bodies—and lives—back.   Timeline Summary [0:00] Why this episode is for men who feel inflamed, tired, and stuck [1:41] How Larry and Dr. Adam connected after a serious knee injury [2:38] Recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon and the urgency to heal [3:03] Dr. Adam's background as a chiropractor turned peptide educator [3:27] Teaching clinicians how to use peptides safely and effectively [4:08] Why peptides are still misunderstood by most men [6:20] From one-on-one practice to helping clinicians impact thousands [8:38] Family illness and the catalyst for Dr. Adam's career shift [10:16] Why "one-to-many" impact matters in healthcare [11:15] How peptides supported Larry's accelerated recovery [12:23] Getting off crutches and braces weeks ahead of schedule [13:33] Why peptides work best when paired with discipline and rehab [16:12] What peptides actually are and how cellular communication works [18:20] Epitalon: the "reset peptide" for sleep, recovery, and longevity [20:37] BPC-157 as the "multivitamin" of peptides [22:10] Gut health, inflammation, and joint recovery explained [24:17] How BPC-157 increases blood flow and healing in joints [26:13] Recovery break and nutrition fundamentals [28:04] Why BPC-157 and TB-500 are often paired together [29:16] TB-500 and stem cell signaling for tissue repair [31:09] Copper peptide for collagen, joints, and longevity [35:09] Injectable vs. oral peptide absorption [36:21] GLP-1 medications explained simply [38:12] Fat loss vs. weight loss and why protein intake matters [41:03] Why muscle preservation is critical during fat loss [43:03] Genetics, obesity, and the myth of "bad genes" [48:36] Peptides as tools—not magic bullets [50:54] Defining true health as the ability to heal [53:05] Why processed food is breaking our bodies [55:07] Eating real food as the foundation of health [57:32] Fueling your body like a high-performance machine     Five Key Takeaways: Peptides improve cellular communication, but they don't replace discipline, movement, or nutrition.  Inflammation and poor recovery are often communication problems, not deficiencies.  Fat loss is not the same as weight loss, and preserving muscle must be the priority.  Genetics load the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger, especially with health outcomes.  True health is the body's ability to heal, not just the absence of disease.      Links & Resources MicroFactor Pack: https://1stphorm.com/products/micro-factor/?a_aid=dadedge Opti-Greens 50: https://1stphorm.com/products/opti-greens-50/?a_aid=dadedge Post-Workout Stack: https://1stphorm.com/products/postworkout-stack?a_aid=dadedge Collagen with Dermaval: https://1stphorm.com/products/collagen-with-dermaval/?a_aid=dadedge Episode Show Notes & Resources: https://thedadedge.com/1434     Closing Remark If this episode challenged how you think about health, recovery, or responsibility, please rate, review, follow, and share the podcast. In the late 1990s, a strange carbon molecule quietly delivered the single longest lifespan extension ever recorded in mammals. The rats lived about 90% longer, and almost no one was paying attention. This episode breaks down what that molecule is, why it works, and how it may upgrade mitochondria, sleep, and human performance when used correctly. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Chris Burres, founder and chief scientist of MyVitalC and the original long-term manufacturer of carbon 60. Chris has produced this Nobel Prize–winning molecule since the early 1990s, supplying research institutions around the world years before it ever entered the biohacking space. He explains how carbon 60 behaves differently from traditional antioxidants, why stability and concentration used to be major problems, and how modern manufacturing finally made real-world use possible. Chris is also a published author, longevity summit host, patent holder, and longtime science communicator who brings rare clarity and humor to complex biology. Dave and Chris explore how carbon 60 interacts with mitochondria, oxidative stress, metabolism, and electrical signaling in the body, and where it fits alongside ketosis, nootropics, supplements, and functional medicine strategies. They also unpack why improving mitochondrial function often shows up first as better energy and sleep optimization, and how that foundation supports longevity, brain optimization, and Smarter Not Harder performance. Along the way, Dave shares his own early experience with C60, how he uses it today, and why it now shows up even in his Danger Coffee stack. You'll Learn: • Why carbon 60 produced the longest longevity result ever recorded in mammal studies • How mitochondrial efficiency shapes energy, sleep, and human performance • What makes C60 a selective antioxidant instead of a blunt one • Why purity, concentration, and stability determine whether a supplement works • How carbon 60 fits into biohacking stacks built around ketosis and metabolism • What users report first, from focus and resilience to deeper sleep • Why mitochondrial health underpins long-term anti-aging strategies • How to think about supplements through a Smarter Not Harder lens Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. Aging is not something Zoltan Istvan plans to accept quietly. He wants to treat death like a technical bug, rewrite the rules of biology, and turn California into the global test bed for radical human upgrades. From cyborg implants to AI driven longevity science, this episode explores what happens when a candidate for governor openly argues that humans should evolve beyond their biological limits and take control of how long and how well they live. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Zoltan Istvan, a leading transhumanist, futurist, longevity advocate, and current candidate for Governor of California. Zoltan has spoken at Parliaments and Senates around the world, appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, consulted for the US Armed Forces, and served as a correspondent for The New York Times. He has addressed the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the UK Parliament, and his work has influenced world leaders while shaping global conversations on AI, liberty, and human enhancement. Trained in philosophy and ethics at Columbia University and the University of Oxford, Zoltan brings rare depth to the intersection of technology, biology, and governance. Together, they explore whether aging should be classified as a disease, why regulation is slowing breakthroughs in longevity science, and how California could become ground zero for anti-aging innovation.
