And frogs, of course. There's quite a bit about frogs.Full podcast details and credits at:https://the9pmedict.com/edict/00203/Please support this podcast by pledging your support to The 9pm Summer Series 2023 by 30 November.https://the9pmedict.com/summer2023If you miss that deadline, you can always throw a few dollars into the tip jar at:https://the9pmedict.com/tip/https://skank.com.au/subscribe/
The Summer Series 2022 continues, as does that goddam global pandemic. So inevitably we're joined once more by science communicator and medical researcher Upulie Divisekera and infectious diseases physician Dr Trent Yarwood. We talk about that pandemic thing, because we kind of have to. But we also discuss hydrogen peroxide therapy (which is not really a thing), salt therapy (which is kind of a thing), ointments (which are definitely a thing), MyHealthRecord, brinjal pickle, how Twitter rots your brain, fossils, fungi, leprosy aka Hansen's Disease, and that Serbian tennis player.Full podcast details and credits at:https://the9pmedict.com/edict/00155/Please consider supporting The 9pm Edict:https://the9pmedict.com/tip/https://skank.com.au/subscribe/

Robot scientists and hummingbirds doing maths; Upulie Divisekera shares some of the latest research news worth getting across.
In This episode Pranoti sits down with Upulie Divisekera, who was a Researcher at the University of Auckland at the time of recording and is a Co-founder of Real Scientists, to take a deeper dive into Upulie‘s research journey. This vintage episode of the Under the Microscope podcast was originally released on 20.05.2020.

For this episode, Dennis talked to Upulie Divisekera, the Australian molecular biologist and accomplished science communicator who co-founded “@RealScientists”. She shares how she got access to platforms with large audiences, and lessons from her SciComm experiences: that you should use storytelling and never underestimate your audience. If you are on Twitter and like to learn about science and the people behind it, you probably know @Realscientists, the Twitter rotating curation account. There, real-life scientists sign up to talk about science and their daily lives for a week at a time; showcasing the diversity of scientists, and breaking the trope of academics as an elitist group. Listen to the Full Conversation on Patreon! Beyond @RealScientists, Upulie Divisekera wrote articles for mainstream Australian newspapers, gave talks at cultural events, and partook at the first science panel of the TV show “Questions and Answers”. One of her many fascinating stories took place in 2011. Following the discovery of the first feathered relative of T. rex, @Upulie – as she is called on Twitter - both ranted and cheered for the new discovery. This got her invited to give a talk at TEDx Canberra! She doesn’t have a background in paleontology, but communicating the scientific results wasn’t the point. In our imagination, the past was populated by enormous reptiles with big pointy teeth. But suddenly the new discovery forces us to re-imagine them as big fuzzy reptiles! The message: Science makes us re-evaluate our views of the world, past and future! Is science political? Does it actually have something in common with religion? And how do the humanities enhance scientific endeavour? We tackle these questions with @realscientists co-founder, science communicator and nanotech researcher Upulie Divisekera. Music: Aces High by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)licensed under CCBYA 3.0.

In episode 54 we chat with the talented Upulie Divisekera, molecular biology PhD student at Monash University. It's a free-wheeling interview covering everything from nanotech for cancer to science communication to Cordyceps fruiting bodies erupting out of human heads! Come on, you know you want to hear about the grey goo. All the cool kids are doing it. For bonus points, follow Real Scientists on Twitter!
Hosts: Ed Brown, Dr. Shayne Joseph, Dr. Mick Vagg, Upulie Divisekera, Lucas Randall. Ed, Shayne, Upulie, Mick and Lucas take a look back at the big stories in science from 2012. It's National Science Week in Australia so I thought I would have a chat with some communicators of science. Upulie Divisekera, Magdeline Lum and Maia Sauren join me to discuss why they are passionate about science comms, what got them involved, ice cream, harry potter and Sir David Attenborough.
Hosts: Ed Brown, Kate Naughton, Mags Lum, Upulie Divisekera. Topics covered: Dear Sir David - write your tributes to a great science communicator. Physicists at CERN have discovered 'Higgs-like' particle. Oxygen injections keep rabbits alive without breathing. Geckos evolved (and lost) their sticky feet many times. A new technique allows doctors to see inside tissues without cutting the skin. And for invasive sea stars, our shipping ports are "hotspots of exotic free-spawning sex".
