British actor Tim Curry died on August 26th at the age of 80. Celebrated for his infamous portrayal of Frank-N-Furter in the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, his decades-long career included many other roles on stage and screen. Among them, Mozart in Amadeus; King Arthur in the Monty Python musical Spamalot; and the evil clown, Pennywise, in a television adaptation of Stephen King's It. In a generous obituary, the BBC shared tributes from many friends and admirers in the arts. One was from comedienne Carol Burnett, who wrote on social media that "nobody could play lovable villains better than he could". And that is the Curry we are pleased to share with you in this special bonus podcast, in his deliciously chilling and seductive reading of Stephen O'Connor's "Ziggurat." They also look at Universal Studios Hollywood's new backlot photo experience and what may be ahead for The Simpsons during Halloween Horror Nights. Then Jim remembers Tim Curry with the story behind Ridley Scott's Legend, from its Disney-inspired origins to Curry's demanding transformation into the Lord of Darkness. NEWS • Halloween Horror Nights rehearsals suggest Sinners and Stranger Things could be among the event's biggest draws. • Hamikuma, Universal Japan's zombie bear mascot, makes his way to Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando. • The Deathly Afraid necklace returns for HHN 2026 with a 35th anniversary design. • Dufftoberfest brings seasonal Duff Beer back to Springfield, U.S.A., while Simpsons Halloween offerings hint at more to come. • Universal continues work on Fast & Furious attractions while Hollywood adds a new backlot photo experience. FEATURE • Jim looks back at Tim Curry's performance as Darkness in Ridley Scott's 1986 fantasy Legend. • Scott originally envisioned the film as an elaborate live-action fantasy inspired by the mood and imagery of classic Disney animation. • Curry's Darkness makeup involved extensive prosthetics, massive horns, stilts, and hours in the makeup chair each day. • The production went through multiple cuts and different musical scores before developing a cult following in the years after its release. Podcasting 2.0 August 28th 2026 Episode 269 - "Verbal Pollution" Shownotes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 - DATABASE SURGERY WEEK — AND THE THIRD EMERGENCY OF THE MONTH The lead, and it's Dave's: Saturday 22 Aug — "#api I'm in the middle of a big refactor with the Podcast Index database schema. If I do my job right, nobody will notice it. But, the side effect will be an overall huge increase in the consistency of the data (duplicates, url change lag, etc)." @dave — the big schema refactor (22 Aug) Wednesday night: "Podcast Index database surgery will begin in the morning." Thursday: "Step 1. Expect a brief api outage. It should last just a few minutes." — then "Done" — then "#api Adding a very large table index..." — and finally, Thursday evening: "Finished. Butt is intact." (6 favourites. The board's favourite status update of the month.) What Adam should ask: what actually changed under the hood, what does "consistency" buy an app developer in practice, and is there anything a host or an app should do differently now that duplicates and url-change lag are being cleaned up?

He cc'd @james, @alberto, @js and then @DavidMarzalC. This is the first public dataset built on the new location tag format rather than the old one. Then somebody built the map. By Friday morning Alberto had radar.rss.io/#globe up — a spinning globe of podcasts made in or about places on earth, drawn from the free dataset, most entries carrying full OpenStreetMap references. James put it in front of the OpenStreetMap community directly: "One for excellent people using @openstreetmap." James's review, and the two asks: "This is so cool. Really shows the power of the location tag. The globe — would be nice to add filters to that (made in vs about). Or maybe just colour the dots differently? The next trick would be some OSM lookups on the IDs to work out what the places are."

When Stuck in the '80s was just getting started, we somehow convinced Adam Curry to talk to us. This was our second-ever celebrity interview, and Curry came armed with exactly the kind of stories we hoped an MTV VJ would have. Madonna. Sebastian Bach. Moscow. Richard Marx. And that's just for starters. In this classic Stuck in the '80s interview, former MTV VJ Adam Curry takes us behind the scenes of Music Television during its glory years and shares some wonderfully strange stories from life at the center of '80s and early '90s pop culture. Adam Curry and the Glory Days of MTV Curry joined MTV in 1987, arriving when the network was still one of the most powerful forces in music. For young fans, MTV VJs had one of the greatest jobs imaginable. They introduced videos, interviewed rock stars, traveled the world and seemingly had unlimited access to the artists the rest of us only saw on television. Curry became one of the network's most recognizable personalities, hosting Headbangers Ball and other MTV programs while interviewing some of the biggest stars in music. And occasionally things got weird. Adam Curry, Sebastian Bach and Red Square One of Curry's more surreal MTV adventures involved traveling to the Soviet Union and visiting Red Square in Moscow with Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. Just consider that sentence for a moment. An MTV VJ and the lead singer of Skid Row wandering around Moscow as the Cold War was winding down. The '80s really did produce some strange combinations. Curry takes us inside that adventure and recalls what it was like experiencing a historic moment while working for a network that had become synonymous with American youth culture. Appearing With Madonna in Truth or Dare Curry also found himself in the orbit of Madonna, eventually appearing in her 1991 documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare. Yes, 1991 is technically outside our jurisdiction. We're allowing it. The landmark documentary offered an unusually intimate look at Madonna during her Blond Ambition tour, and Curry shares the story of how he ended up making an appearance. Adam Curry vs. Richard Marx And then there's Richard Marx. Curry and Marx had a very public disagreement — the kind of feud that was considerably harder to conduct before social media gave celebrities the ability to argue with each other 24 hours a day. What started it? How serious did it get? And what happened when the MTV VJ and the “Right Here Waiting” singer found themselves on opposite sides of a very public fight? Curry tells the story. From MTV VJ to Podcasting Pioneer There's another reason this interview holds a special place in Stuck in the '80s history. By the time we talked with Curry, he had become one of the key figures in the early development of podcasting. That made him a particularly appropriate guest for a little podcast that had only recently begun trying to figure out this strange new medium itself. Nearly two decades later, we're still here. Podcasting 2.0 August 14th 2026 Episode 267 - "Chocolove" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 - THE SPOTIFY "SKIP AHEAD" BUTTON — THE BIG ONE What it is: Spotify is testing a button that appears on the playback screen the moment it thinks you'd want to skip — an intro, a sponsorship message, or an entire ad break. It is bigger than everything else on screen. One tap drops you at the end of the break, back in the show. Premium subscribers only, selected markets including US and UK, and only when the app is in the foreground. Who broke it: James Cridland at Pod News, 4 August 2026 — an exclusive. Spotify never announced it. Semafor and most of the trade press picked it up afterwards; Cridland noted on air this week that some of them ran it without credit. The number that makes it different from a skip button: Cridland's arithmetic — skipping a typical ad break by hand is nine presses of the 15-second button, plus a correction tap when you overshoot. Skip Ahead is one. "Some people have said, oh, but you've been able to skip for years and this is no different. But a button that only appears when it's stuff that Spotify thinks you should be skipping is a start." It skips other people's money: the button fires on third-party ads — Acast, Odyssey, the New York Times — and on ads inside Spotify's own shows. It even skipped Search Engine's read for its own paid tier, PJ Vogt pitching Incognito Mode. One half of Spotify sells advertisers reach; the other half hands listeners a button to leave. Spotify's answer, and the trapdoor in it: Spotify told Cridland it is "not affecting ad delivery." True only if delivery means to the device. Cridland: "If ad delivery is to the listener's ear, which is actually what people are paying for..." — the download still counts, the ad still gets billed, the human never hears it. Spotify's other defence: the button merely shows where other listeners already skip. Cridland: "I'm not entirely sold on that, but if that's what Spotify say, I mean they wouldn't lie."

In Hour 1 of Willard & Dibs, Mark Willard and Dan Dibley break down Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy's comments about a possible Stephen Curry extension. They present the question of whether the Warriors would want Curry to want out in an effort to start a fresh slate. In Hour 2, Willard and Dibs are joined by NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell to break down the 49ers' defensive schemes and what missing Nick Bosa would mean for the defense's overall characteristics. Willard & Dibs also discuss how much they enjoy having Cosell on. In Hour 3, Willard and Dibs check in around the NFL and discuss the atmosphere around the Giants as they continue a horrendous 2026 season. They're greeted by Nick in San Francisco, who sounds awfully familiar, before reacting to the sound of Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg being impressed by Stephen Curry's shooting skills. In Hour 4, Willard and Dibs continue reacting to Mike Dunleavy's comments from yesterday's press conference, especially those regarding Stephen Curry's extension.
Steiny & Guru discuss Mike Dunleavy and Joe Lacob's alignment and why the Warriors front office appears to be on the same page, if that's a good thing, the grace they're asking of the fanbase, curious comments about Curry, a self-diagnosis gone wrong, the last Alaskans, and why it's hard to be a fan of a once dynasty since passed. Plus, Monte Poole joins us from NBC Sports Bay Area at 1:00p.
Steiny & Guru see the Warriors as being on the same page, but they're strangely trying to put the ball in Steph Curry's court. Are they setting up something we don't know about?
Ohio State's defensive line may be deeper and more versatile in 2026, but it must replace enormous production from Kayden McDonald and Caden Curry. Kenyatta Jackson returns as the proven leader after recording 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Eddrick Houston has emerged as the biggest early fall-camp riser, Beau Atkinson appears to lead the competition at the other defensive-end spot, and transfers James Smith and John Walker give Larry Johnson several experienced options inside. We break down the projected rotation, the battle opposite Jackson, Houston's breakout potential, Qua Russaw's hybrid role, the young defensive ends pushing for snaps and how Matt Patricia can use multiple fronts instead of relying on one traditional starting four. Jalen Brunson is now an NBA champion, a Finals MVP and a New York Knicks legend — and Ric Bucher argues that the decision that helped make it possible reveals an uncomfortable truth about what most NBA players actually value. On this episode of On The Ball, Ric revisits Carmelo Anthony's admission that he wouldn't have left $113 million on the table the way Brunson did. Melo's comments aren't quite as damning as they initially appeared, but they raise a bigger question: How many NBA stars are truly willing to sacrifice money, comfort and personal interests for the singular pursuit of a championship?Brunson did. And now he has the ring to show for it.That discussion leads Ric into why championships require more than talent — and why he remains skeptical that stars such as Anthony Edwards, Ja Morant, Joel Embiid and potentially Luka Doncic have demonstrated the single-minded discipline necessary to lead a team all the way.Ric also tackles another NBA obsession: LeBron James. Looking back at the controversial 2015 Finals MVP vote, he examines why LeBron's enormous statistical production didn't translate into winning and arrives at a larger theory about his place in basketball culture: attention and excellence have become increasingly difficult for fans and media to separate. Finally, Ric explains why Warriors fans waiting for another blockbuster move may be waiting for something that isn't coming. Golden State's realistic goal is relevance, not another championship — and the idea of rebuilding around a 39-year-old Steph Curry is, in Ric's view, pure fantasy.TIMESTAMPS00:00 — Welcome to On The Ball01:23 — Carmelo Anthony, Jalen Brunson and the $113 million question02:00 — Brunson joins the exclusive club of championship-leading stars02:14 — Why Tony Parker shouldn't have won the 2007 Finals MVP03:21 — Revisiting Andre Iguodala's controversial 2015 Finals MVP04:21 — Why Steph Curry received zero Finals MVP votes05:13 — LeBron's incredible 2015 numbers vs. what actually decided the series06:32 — The LeBron James dilemma: historic statistics, but not enough to win07:46 — How Brunson unexpectedly sparked a LeBron epiphany09:15 — Why LeBron generates more attention than anyone in NBA history09:51 — Attention isn't the same thing as excellence11:13 — LeBron's real superpower beyond his basketball talent12:03 — Why Steph Curry doesn't command attention the way LeBron does13:31 — Back to Brunson — and his place among NBA legends14:17 — The real context behind Carmelo Anthony's Brunson comments15:09 — The harsh reality: winning isn't most NBA players' No. 1 priority16:27 — What Brunson actually sacrificed for the Knicks17:20 — Why winning a championship requires an almost obsessive commitment18:32 — Ric on career ambition, fatherhood and changing priorities19:13 — Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Bill Russell and unforgettable NBA experiences20:31 — What championship teams require beyond talent, health and luck21:14 — Why personal discipline matters for championship leaders22:04 — Anthony Edwards, Ja Morant, Joel Embiid and Luka Doncic: can they lead a champion?22:41 — The question Warriors employees keep asking Ric23:15 — Who can Golden State realistically add? Evan Roberts delivers a blunt reality check to Draymond Green, arguing that LeBron James did not avoid Golden State because of old rivalries or fear of criticism. He chose Philadelphia because the Warriors are no longer good enough to win, while the 76ers still offer a possible championship path. Evan and Tiki Barber also debate whether Steph Curry should remain with Golden State rather than chase another title elsewhere, with Charlotte emerging as the one destination that would feel natural because of Curry's family ties. Plus, Evan reveals the former Giants and Jets he cannot believe are still in the NFL, including Jamal Adams, Eli Apple, Denzel Mims, Bobby Hart and Darren Waller.
