The historic teal wave at the last election delivered the two major parties their worst electoral results ever. So, perhaps it's no surprise that the government looks set to introduce new laws that could make it harder for newcomers to compete. The minister responsible says he wants to address the “growing threat of big money in politics.” The rules could include a requirement that all donations over $1000 be disclosed and made public in real time, with caps on the amount that can be donated.  A cap on spending is also on the table – somewhere around a million dollars per candidate, per seat, which is significantly less than many of the teals spent to win. Meet the three MPs committed to better care for eating disorders

Butterfly: Let's Talk

In February this year, ABC dedicated their flagship investigative report, Four Corners, to eating disorders. This was, in part, because of a few Members of Parliament. The MPs are Teal Independent Zoe Daniel, Liberal Andrew Wallace and Labor's Susan Templeman. Based on continuous calls for help from their constituents, the three resolved to act for change. To start, they're co-chairing a new Parliamentary Friends Group for Eating Disorder Awareness to highlight the critical need for more care and support. “We've been absolutely avalanched in my office by families and people from across the country, saying that it really needs action,” says Zoe Daniel. “And it's been interesting to have conversations with other MPs. Eating disorders aren't confined to the stereotypical groups.” Susan Templeman agrees. “I don't think there's an elected office in the country where someone hasn't phoned in at the end of their tether, saying, I don't know what to do. My son or my daughter or my partner is suffering from an eating disorder, and I can't get the help that I need.” Andrew Wallace was once in a Cabinet meeting where a senior health official assured the Prime Minister that Australia was getting on top of the issue. “I said, sorry, Prime Minister, but I totally disagree with what you've just been told,” he recalls. “We have absolutely no idea how you first suffer from it, why you suffer from it and, importantly, how you best treat it.” As a carer, Wallace speaks from his own experience, as does Susan Templeman. Eating disorders are mental health issues that do not discriminate. And as more policymakers lean in to educate their political peers, the more hope there will be for real investment in care.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is where things get a bit fun! And, actually, this episode explains WHY i decided to do this election series. So. The policy and ideas gridlock is real. And there's a reason for it. But there's also a solution and policy think tank The Grattan Institute has mapped it out with research. It's to vote in a number of climate-focused MPs who do not belong to either of the major parties. As it happens, there are about 30 running across Australia this election, and if three of them (give or take) get voted in May 21, then they will hold the balance of power. And thusly Australia has the best chance of moving forward on those 5 Pillars of Care I keep banging on about: climate policy; a federal corruption body; women's equality; an indigenous voice to parliament; and addressing the growing divide between the haves and have nots. It might sound wonky and complex, but the Institute's Danielle and I break the whole thing down into simple - and super hopeful - terms. That Gridlock report we talk about? It's here https://grattan.edu.au/institutional-change-needed-to-reignite-policy-reform/You can learn about the independents, and see if there's one running in your electorate, here https://www.climate200.com.auI mention a few “teal indies” I follow on Instagram:Dr Monique Ryan for Kooyong https://www.instagram.com/mon4kooyong/Allegra Spender running in Wentworth https://www.instagram.com/allegra.spender/Zoe Daniel for Goldstein https://www.instagram.com/zoedaniel/Kylea Tink for North Sydney https://www.instagram.com/kyleatink/Hannabeth Luke in Page https://www.instagram.com/hanabethluke/Kate Chaney for Curtin in WA https://www.instagram.com/chaneyforcurtin/David Pocock in Canberra (senate) https://www.instagram.com/davidpocock/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Zoe Daniel has an envy inducing resume which she has built up over years working as a journalist and foreign correspondence. Both roles have given Zoe the opportunity to travel extensively and also live abroad in Africa, South East Asia, the USA and Australia (where she is from originally). Many Australians will know Zoe from her time as a television reporter and Bureau Chief in Washington DC working for ABC News.  She is now starting on the next exciting chapter in her resume in that she is looking to be elected as a Member of Parliament as an independent candidate. In this episode she talks about her career working in environments which were sometimes dangerous, hostile and/or politically charged, having confidence to take opportunities and saying Yes even if out of your comfort zone. We didn't even get time to talk about her 3 books, public speaking and being a fellow podcaster.   For more information on Zoe please use the link below: Official Website: https://www.zoedaniel.com.au/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zoedaniel/ (https://www.instagram.com/zoedaniel/) FB: https://www.facebook.com/ZoeDanielForGoldstein (https://www.facebook.com/ZoeDanielForGoldstein) Twitter: https://twitter.com/zdaniel (https://twitter.com/zdaniel)
