One of our big ideas in trying to capture the vibe of FromSoft RPGs in a tabletop setting is to incorporate map-making mechanics, to look at games like The Quiet Year or Microscope and tie them directly into more conventional RPG gameplay, so that you are creating a world as you explore it, in order to reproduce that feeling of cautiously feeling out a big, mysterious world full of tantalizing stray threads of a larger story. This is a very different mode of gameplay than anything we did in EIDOLON, so it makes sense for us to start here and make sure we can build out a strong foundation into these mechanics, so that once we start developing the more familiar facets of the game, we understand how they integrate into these newer concepts.

Microscopes and telescopes By Aarron Walter A friend and former colleague called me recently to catch up and get my perspective on an important question. He leads a product team at a major tech company and the design team had just been moved under him. He's an exceptional product thinker with a sharp grasp of engineering systems and shipping processes. But managing designers? That was new territory. “Where should design really fit in our workflow?” he asked. What struck me most was that he asked at all. Too often, when design moves under product in a re-org, it becomes a service function. Something to be brought in after the big decisions are made—to polish the edges, add the visuals, and make things look good. That, of course, sells the value of design short, and my friend sensed it. He didn't want design to just support the work of engineers. He wanted it to play a part in shaping the product. So I shared what I've seen in organizations where engineering and design truly thrive together: it starts with recognizing that engineers and designers bring fundamentally different perspectives to the table. *** To read the full version of The Brief, visit our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/the-brief-microscopes-and-telescopes
Episode 252: Faith Under the MicroscopeIn this deep dive into the themes of Galatians Chapter 5, we are encouraged to reflect on the true essence of our faith. The pivotal question posed to us is whether our lives bear the evidence of being genuine followers of Jesus. It is easy to declare our faith with words, but this passage challenges us to consider whether the Spirit manifests through our actions and choices. Galatians 5:16-25 emphasizes the contrast between living by the Spirit, which brings forth love, joy, peace, and self-control, and living according to the flesh, marked by immorality, jealousy, and dissension. This comparison serves as a mirror to our souls, urging us to evaluate which list more accurately describes our lives. The spiritual insight here highlights the necessity of a transformation that is both internal and evident through our behavior. It challenges us to renounce superficial confessions and embrace a faith that truly changes us from the inside out, aligning our daily walk with the Spirit's path.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Advocate Paul Pretorius SC, Senior Counsel at the Johannesburg Bar and former Chief Evidence Leader at the Zondo Commission, about the newly announced Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, tasked with investigating alleged deep-rooted dysfunction in South Africa’s law enforcement sector. With the terms of reference released by President Ramaphosa just yesterday, Pretorius weighs in on whether the commission can truly cut to the heart of systemic issues or if it risks becoming yet another political whitewash. They explore critical questions around the scope, urgency, and impact of the inquiry: Will its recommendations be taken seriously? Is there institutional will and capacity to act on them? Drawing on his experience with the Zondo Commission, Pretorius provides insight into what it takes for such a process to succeed in the face of entrenched resistance and political inertia. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Dylan Sharkey of the Illinois Policy Institute lays out a stark warning about Gov. JB Pritzker's aggressive political future, including a likely third term bid and potential 2028 presidential run. Sharkey highlights Illinois' unique lack of gubernatorial term limits and the historic precedent of third terms only for Republicans—not Democrats—until now. He points to Pritzker's controversial policies like allowing noncitizens to become police officers and misleading claims about eliminating the grocery tax, which mostly shifted the burden to local towns. Sharkey also exposes Illinois lawmakers' outsized salaries—over $120,000 for just 70 days of legislative work—and draws parallels to the corruption of Mike Madigan, urging Illinois residents to remember that legacy. The conversation paints a grim picture of entrenched Democratic control and financial mismanagement threatening the state's future, with serious implications if Pritzker pursues national ambitions.

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Ashley Bucsek from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor about her laboratory-scale three-dimensional (3D) x-ray diffraction (XRD) microscope to replace studies done in synchrotron facilities. A key element of the design is the material used to make the x-rays. Instead of using a solid metal as a target, Bucsek's research group used a liquid metal source to generate the x-rays, thereby circumventing melting. Among the advantages of miniaturizing the microscope are its immediate availability and the possibility of conducting long-term studies. This work was published in a recent issue of Nature Communications.

The Employment Relations Authority has found a worker wasn't unjustifiably disadvantaged or constructively dismissed after he was ordered back into the office three days a week, when he'd been working from home four out of five days. Meanwhile the PSA is still waiting for an Employment Relations Authority hearing over the government's directive that work from home for public servants is not a right and should not compromise performance. Employment Lawyer at Anderson Lloyd, James Cowan spoke to Lisa Owen.

Life often feels confusing, especially when viewed through the narrow lens of our own struggles, delays, or unexpected turns. It's easy to focus in on the immediate—heartbreak, disappointment, loss, or discouragement—without seeing how it fits into anything larger. But what if those microscopic hardships are essential parts of a far greater plan? Just like Joseph, who went from the depths of betrayal and imprisonment to becoming instrumental in saving an entire nation, there's a reminder that God sees a comprehensive, far-reaching story unfolding. We tend to look through a "microscope" and make what's small in God's plan big and all-encompassing. But we need God's perspective, to remember it's a small thing in light of all that he's doing. When we do, it helps us to wait for God's perfect timing, respond with faith intact when opportunity arrises, and maintain trust in God alone when/if success come.

Bible Prophecy Under the Microscope-Episode 36 Gary discusses the fact that ALL Christians are preterists, at least to some degree. If you believe the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is a historical fact—you are a preterist. Even unbelievers cannot deny that these events—whether they believe they happened or not—have changed the course of world history. In other words, Jesus Christ has changed the world forever, according to the Scriptures.
