We talk a little bit of the upcoming Germany federal elections this weekend and in TWISH we hear about Carl von Rokitansky the Austrian physician, pathologist, humanist philosopher and liberal politician and founder of the Viennese School of Medicine of the 19th century. How he managed to dissect tens of thousands of bodies is baffling and just a little bit scary…Then, we turn to the news:UK: Prof. Jim Al-Khalili gets Darwin Day MedalSWEDEN: Murder of Quran burnerFRANCE: Didier Raoult can't stop spreading bullshitITALY: Italian ‘mystic' may face trial after DNA match with blood on Virgin Mary statueINTERNATIONAL: Elisabeth Bik Science Integrity Fund launchesWe hand out a Really Right Award (for once) and a little surprisingly it goes to the UK government for an ambitious project to spot climate change tipping points. Viktor Frankl, Austrian neurologist, philosopher, author, psychiatrist and a Holocaust Survivor. His memoir, “Man's Search for Meaning” was about his experiences at the concentration camps. He found strength to go on during this horrific time where 6 million Jews died. He found meaning through purposeful work, courage even in fear and love even in traumatic experiences. He encouraged others to find meaning in every moment. Logotherapy is known as the third Viennese School of Psychotherapy. Sigmud Freud was first and Alfred Adler was second. Logotherapy is finding meaning and purpose amidst atrocious conditions. The search for meaning is the motivation force in humans.

Two things mark Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F Major, his shortest symphony and one of the least-performed. The first is its energy; contrary to classical sonata form there is no slow movement. The second is its unflagging good humor. The Eighth is full of high spirits, unexpected twists, unusual colors, and musical jests. In the symphony's lightness some listeners detect traces of the influence of Haydn and Mozart, but as with all of Beethoven's work the language is uniquely his own. Franz Schubert's String Quartet in C minor, D. 703 from 1820 is popularly known as the "Quartettsatz" because only a single movement of the piece was finished. The "Quartettsatz" marked something of a coming of age for Schubert, as he began to find ways to combine the rich Viennese heritage he absorbed during his student years with his own evolving dramatic ambitions. Structurally the piece dips and swells as it progresses through a series of dramatic extremes, assuming the shape of an advanced sonata design while avoiding the limitations of that form.
