Send us a textViktor Frankl's logotherapy fundamentally shifts how we approach therapy, focusing on the search for meaning rather than pleasure. Drawing from his harrowing experiences in concentration camps, Frankl established a psychotherapy model that emphasizes the importance of finding purpose amidst suffering. This episode dives deep into how logotherapy addresses existential vacuums many experience today, particularly those who appear successful yet feel unfulfilled. We explore intriguing concepts such as "Sunday neurosis," the emptiness felt by individuals after achievements, and how they relate to a lack of genuine connection to one's inner values. Frankl's philosophy redefines happiness by asserting that fulfillment emerges naturally when we pursue meaning in our lives. The conversation also covers the three pillars of logotherapy, which empower clients to take control of their lives by recognizing the freedom of will, the will to find meaning, and discovering that life holds meaning even in tragic circumstances. Throughout this episode, practical techniques like paradoxical intention and the mountain range exercise are discussed, allowing listeners to understand how therapy can inspire clients to confront their fears and shift focus towards meaningful engagements. With insights that resonate deeply with both therapists and clients, this discussion not only illuminates the heart of logotherapy but also provides valuable guidance for those seeking purpose. Sometimes, MANY TIMES, life seems far out of control. I know mine has lately. I started talking about it here................................ ..................And then it went a little bit more out of my control. The show stopped and was interrupted by a loss of internet. So I went upstairs to yell at the internet and give the dog a hug. And then I got back to it. Kind of a metaphor for life, in some ways. It's a brief podcast. Hopefully meaningful. Enjoy.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” - Viktor FranklBy no means was "everything" taken away. But that hour of work we put in was. The beautiful podcast we recorded was not to be - the victim of new technology. So I had to choose the way - would I leave you listeners hanging, wondering what happened, no podcast drop? Would I find the time to re-record somewhere in the week? Or... one of my least favorite things to do - would I offer you a previous episode, one that I selected as a past favorite?I didn't want to leave you hanging. And I couldn't squeeze in more recording time. So I offer you this from the archives. One of my favorite topics. Existential Dynamics - the yin and the yang of daily life. Going to see the movie Civil War, the 2024 release written and directed by Alex Garland, isn't like seeing most movies. You walk out of the theater with a lot to think about -- and maybe you walk out changed. What the experience has done for me is to help me embrace a philosophy proposed by Viktor Frankl, the 20th Century psychiatrist who survived the Holocaust and developed Logotherapy, based on the premise that a basic drive of humankind is to find meaning in life — no matter what the conditions of someone's life may be. His most famous work is the book Man's Search for Meaning -- published in English in 1959, an immediate best-seller and, in 1991, called by the Library of Congress one of the ten most influential books in the U.S. If the term "tragic optimism" sounds contradictory to you, stick with me for a few minutes. You might find it as bracing, helpful -- and hopeful -- as I do.Opening Music by Oleg Kyrylkovv from PixabaySupport the Show.Do you have comments to share or an idea for an upcoming episode? How often do we find ourselves amid something grand + important, but are unaware of it until we look in hindsight? This morning, Executive Pastor Wes Peterson shared with us the story of the Last Supper in Luke 22:21-24, 31-34. The disciples argued with each other about who was the greatest among them all the while sitting in the presence of Jesus Christ, the greatest of all time! It was there Jesus shared that Peter would betray Him, not once, but three times. Jesus was not shocked, was not surprised, and was not concerned because He had and still has a greater plan. Jesus would use the failures of Peter to redeem him + sanctify him. He would use Peter's future faith-testing trials and pain to give him greater purpose. It is the same for us now. Jesus is Lord over all. He can redeem the pain of your struggles + failures for a greater purpose. He can give you a redemption story that could only point to the Father, and strengthen those around you.To listen to past sermons from this series, visit hopechurchrva.com/sermons__Connect with us at:www.hopechurchrva.comFacebook: @HopeChurchRVAInstagram: @hopechurchrva

An age when we're asking questions of doctors we should be asking priests - but fewer priests seem able to provide meaningful answers to today's spiritual seekers. Enter Viktor Frankl. Frankl was a Jewish psychiatrist whose pioneering work known as Logotherapy has helped millions of suffering men and women begin asking the right questions of life and finding answers that satisfy their souls. In this series, we'll explore Frankl's book The Doctor and the Soul. Father Bill's guest and tour guide is Tom Lavin, a therapist, teacher, and friend who has studied Frankl's work for many years and helped many addicts and alcoholics find new or renewed meaning and purpose in their recovery. This episode introduces Viktor Frankl and his work. It explores how Logotherapy can shed new light on the path to overcome addiction. Show Notes: Tom Lavin is a Psychotherapist, Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He's served for many years as Adjunct Faculty, University of Nevada School of Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. This week, I share with you my most recent guest appearance on my longtime friend Joe Rupe's show, Lighting the Void. By telling the traditional story of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (which is far more alchemical and esoteric than the Universal rendition), the heartbreaking and triumphant story of Joseph 'Elephant Man' Merrick, and discussing some of Viktor Frankl's survival of the Auschwitz concentration camp (and development of logotherapy), we try to understand the struggles in our own personal lives a bit more. Relativizing one's own suffering can be problematic, surely, and should be done with caution -- but looking into the stories of people with struggles far greater than your own can give great perspective and inspiration. We hope you dig the listen!
