White Coat Investor Podcast

Should physicians take partnership track jobs, and how do these opportunities actually work? In this episode of The White Coat Investor Podcast, we break down how physician partnership track jobs are structured, what doctors should evaluate before accepting one, and whether the long-term upside is worth the tradeoffs early in your career. We also answer questions about tax preparation versus tax strategy, teaching kids about investing, hiring locums instead of employees, how new doctors should prioritize money decisions, and what to do after receiving a large financial windfall. Understanding compensation structure and long-term career opportunities can have a major impact on building wealth as a physician. Today's episode is brought to us by SoFi, the folks who help you get your money right. Paying off student debt quickly and getting your finances back on track isn't easy, but that's where SoFi can help — they have exclusive, low rates designed to help medical residents refinance student loans—and that could end up saving you thousands of dollars, helping you get out of student debt sooner. How could a busy physician take their family abroad for months at a time without sacrificing their career, their children's education, or their financial future? In this episode, Dr. Jim Dahle talks with anesthesiologist and palliative care physician Dr. Sarah Gebauer, author of Go Anyway: The Practical Guide to Long-Term Travel With Kids. Sarah has traveled to more than 50 countries with her husband and four children while taking 3-5 month sabbaticals from her private practice. She explains how she created a workable sabbatical policy, used trusted locums coverage, and found that taking extended time away did not reduce her income as much as she expected. They discuss the real cost of long-term international travel, how living abroad can sometimes cost less than staying home, and the tradeoffs between slow travel, remote work, and constant movement. They also tackle the questions many physician parents have: Can children stay on track academically? What happens to friendships and activities? Can physicians in primary care, surgery, or dual-doctor households make this work? And can a sabbatical actually help with burnout and career direction? Financial literacy is not just about maximizing accounts. It can give you the flexibility to design a life with more time, curiosity, and connection with the people who matter most. Most of us have been told, at some point or another, to just be happy. Just let it go. Just choose joy. And if you've tried that and found it completely unhelpful, you are in very good company. Dr. Peggy DeLong is back on the podcast for her third visit, and what she shares in this episode about how to increase your capacity for happiness is not what most people are teaching. It's not about ignoring what's hard. It's not about thinking positively until the feeling kicks in. And it has nothing to do with luck or your current circumstances. Peggy discovered the power of gratitude while sitting by her fiancé's side as he was dying from an aggressive cancer. She was 26. She didn't push the grief away. She felt it — and that turned out to be the beginning of everything she now teaches. If you've ever been told to just cheer up and wanted to throw something, this one is for you.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why pushing emotional pain aside actually makes it harder to access real happiness — and what to do instead How your capacity for joy is in direct proportion to your capacity to feel pain What collective effervescence is and why it matters more than we think How human connection with complete strangers predicts happiness just as much as our closest relationships What the three Ps — present, pleasure, and purpose — have to do with breaking the high-achieving cycle Peggy's four Ps for building positive mental health: prioritize, plan, practice, prosper   DR. It's a genuinely great story.Dan started building model boats at eight and full-size ones at seventeen. When COVID hit and his previous business, making tree-shaped bookcases, looked like it was going to collapse overnight, he decided to go all in on something he'd always wanted to do. He built a website, started modernising old wooden boat plans using CAD and CNC technology, created his first online course on varnishing, and never really looked back. What I found fascinating talking to Dan is how clearly he's thought about why online teaching actually works better than in-person for hands-on crafts. The camera angles, the controlled lighting, the ability to overlay animations showing wet edges drying in real time. It's not a compromise on the in-person experience, it's genuinely better for teaching the foundations. We also got pretty honest about where Dan's business has room to grow. He's doing well with Facebook ads and his courses are covering his workshop overheads, but his email list is sitting mostly untouched. We talked through what that could mean if he actually started using it properly, and the numbers are exciting. If you're building a course business around a physical craft or a niche skill, I think you'll get a lot from this one.Check out Dan's work:

Coding agents have gotten really good at one kind of work. You scope a feature, edit some files, run the tests, ship it. It all happens on disk. But that is not how data work feels. You load something, you look at it, you run a cell, you watch how it responds, and you decide the next move from whatever is sitting in memory. And until now, your agent couldn't see any of that. It only saw the files. Never the live state. This episode, that wall comes down. marimo pair drops a coding agent right inside a running notebook, with full access to every variable Python is holding in memory. The notebook becomes a shared canvas. You point, it runs the code. You tell it to zoom in on the Picasso paintings, and the chart just updates. No MCP tools to wire up, no schema to describe. Just Python, and an agent that can finally see what you see. Trevor Manz is back to walk us through it. You ask an AI a question and it answers with total confidence. Most of the time, a confidently wrong answer is just an annoyance. But what if the question is medical, and there's a real patient on the other end? In that world, a hallucination isn't a bug, it's a patient-safety event. Sumit Gundawar is a London-based software engineer who builds the clinical platform for a UK longevity and aesthetic-medicine clinic, and his whole argument is that in high-stakes AI, the model is the easy part. This lesson is all about the customer journey, from the moment someone meets you to the moment they buy and beyond. Grab a journal for this one. It's short, but it's dense. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN How to spot the single most profitable thing you already sell, even if it's not your top earner Why knowing exactly where your people come from changes the words you use to welcome them The two questions that determine whether someone takes action once they land in your world What to do when someone doesn't take that action, and why it doesn't mean anything's wrong How to build a follow-up system that feels like hosting a party, not chasing a sale Why the experience after someone buys matters as much as the sale itself   RESOURCES MENTIONED  The Art of Receiving (12-week program, formerly Effortless Sales): sarahwalton.com/art-of-receiving   READY TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS? In this first episode of the Biblical Finance: Money Management God's Way series, Dr. Chonta Haynes introduces a biblical framework God impressed upon her after years of teaching financial principles and seeing students understand budgeting while continuing to struggle financially. She explains how four distinct money personalities—Steam, Water, Ice, and Fire—shape the way we give, save, spend, and build wealth. Rather than trying another budgeting method, you'll discover how to steward the personality God gave you and apply timeless biblical principles in a way that works with your natural wiring instead of against it. Most of us grip tighter when life feels uncertain. We work harder, plan more, and try to control everything within reach. This week I'm joined by Bron Watson, a nurse, educator, and entrepreneur who built a thriving coaching business while a quiet voice kept telling her something wasn't right. She ignored it until a breast cancer diagnosis in 2017 changed everything. Five years later, a second diagnosis followed: an incurable blood cancer. In this conversation, Bron and I talk about what it costs to override your own intuition, and what it actually means to control the controllables when nothing feels controllable at all. We get into her "saber-tooth tiger" business model, the moment she shut her mastermind down overnight, and why she now believes everyone can heal, even when not everyone gets a cure. If you've ever pushed through something your gut told you to stop and look at, pop in those earphones.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN How Bron's "saber-tooth tiger" model fed off her own energy until she couldn't safely get off Why "just let it go" can feel dismissive — and what Bron does instead when emotion hits How Bron's husband uses "the pause" to create space before reacting What it means to be the CEO of your own "executive committee," and who actually belongs on it Why Bron wants the word "cure" dropped from how we talk about cancer altogether How a roadmap, not a fixed plan, helped Bron navigate setbacks without losing direction   RESOURCES MENTIONED The Serenity Prayer (referenced by Bron throughout the episode) Bron's upcoming book, Be Where Your Feet Are   BRON'S INVITATION TO GAME ON GIRLFRIEND® LISTENERS If you know someone navigating a cancer diagnosis, Bron invites you to sign up for The Serenity Project newsletter. With decades of experience as a registered nurse and educator, she's spent her career drawn to spaces where care, communication, and connection matter most. She founded her first business in 2012, helping business owners share their voice online with authenticity and purpose. Over the past decade, her work through The Social Coach has supported thousands of people to show up in life and business with intention. Bron's journey shifted in 2017 with a breast cancer diagnosis, and again in 2023 with a second diagnosis: an incurable blood cancer. These experiences shaped her belief that healing reaches far beyond the physical. It's emotional, spiritual, and entirely personal. So she created The Serenity Project, a space where science meets soul, alongside her continued work with The Social Coach.   RELATED GAME ON GIRLFRIEND® EPISODES YOU'LL LOVE Episode 92: The ONE Thing That Will Never Steer You Wrong (It's the Softest Voice in the Room) — https://sarahwalton.com/softest-voice/ Episode 44: How To Be Great In The Face Of Uncertainty — https://sarahwalton.com/uncertainty Episode 113: World Events, Stress & Your Ambition — How They Go Together — https://sarahwalton.com/stress-ambition/ READY TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS?
