What does it actually take to sell a creator business? That's what I wanted to get into with Pat Flynn and Liz Wilcox, who sat down with me to share some big news. After 18 years of building Smart Passive Income, Pat has officially sold the business - and Liz is the new owner. In this episode, Pat and Liz take us through the entire process, from why Pat decided it was time to let go, to how they valued and structured the deal, why Liz was the right person to take over, and how they planned the transition to make sure the audience felt supported. We also get into what makes a creator business sellable, including building systems, community, recurring revenue, and a brand that can thrive beyond its founder. If you're building a creator business and want to understand how to make it more valuable, transferable, and ultimately sellable, I think you'll get a lot out of this conversation.Timestamps:00:00 Introduction01:15 Pat's big announcement02:48 Liz's journey to acquiring SPI04:30 How SPI became a sellable business06:27 Pat's massive success with Pokemon08:21 The impact of SPI's community10:47 Why Pat let go of SPI12:38 Prioritizing community over profit14:10 The financial aspects of the deal16:15 The future of Smart Passive Income: Team WIN18:30 What makes a business sellable20:00 Merging Liz's brand into SPI21:23 10x is easier than 2x22:50 The challenge of selling a personal brand24:50 The intentional transition processIf you enjoyed this episode, please like and subscribe, share it with your friends, and leave a review. Open for less than two weeks at the time of recording, the business has already made a fantastic impression on the community. Bill and Tony share their vision of creating a welcoming "third space" for all ages, featuring PC and console gaming stations, a retro gaming room, card tournaments, and a shop carrying Pokémon, sports cards, and more. Building Community Through Gaming: The Story and Strategy Behind Run It Back in Grayslake Welcome to another in-depth feature from the heart of Grayslake! Today, we're diving into the inspiring journey of Run It Back, a gaming lounge and card shop that's quickly becoming a local favorite. Based on a recent episode of the Discovery and Grayslake podcast, we'll break down the main themes, actionable tips, and expert insights shared by founders Bill and Tony. Whether you're a gaming enthusiast, a small business owner, or someone passionate about community spaces, there's a wealth of knowledge here for you. Table of Contents The Power of Local Roots and Friendship Choosing the Right Location: Visibility and Community Creating a Multi-Generational Gaming Space Blending Retro and Modern Gaming Experiences Making Collectible Cards Accessible and Fun Building Community Through Events and Tournaments Flexible Pricing and Memberships for All Partnering with Local Businesses Leveraging Online Platforms for Growth Continuous Improvement and Community Feedback Final Thoughts: The Hometown Advantage 1. The Power of Local Roots and Friendship  Key Insight:   Bill and Tony's story is rooted in long-standing friendship and local ties. Both grew up in the Grayslake area, attended local high schools, and have deep connections to the community. Actionable Advice: Leverage Local Networks:** If you're starting a business, tap into your hometown connections. Familiarity with the area and its people can help you understand community needs and build trust quickly. Build with Friends:** Shared history and trust among founders can make the entrepreneurial journey smoother and more resilient. Expert Tip:   Don't underestimate the value of local goodwill. People love supporting businesses run by "one of their own." 2. Choosing the Right Location: Visibility and Community  Key Insight:   Run It Back's founders prioritized visibility and accessibility when choosing their location. After their first choice fell through, they pivoted quickly, relying on local tips and their own knowledge of the area. Actionable Advice: Scout for High-Visibility Spots:** Look for locations near other popular businesses or community hubs. Foot traffic and easy access are crucial for new ventures. Be Flexible:** If your first choice doesn't work out, stay open to alternatives. Sometimes, the "second best" option turns out to be the perfect fit. Expert Tip:   Ask friends, family, and local business owners for leads on available spaces. Word-of-mouth can uncover hidden gems. 3. Creating a Multi-Generational Gaming Space  Key Insight:   Run It Back is intentionally designed to welcome all ages—from kids to adults, casual players to hardcore gamers. Actionable Advice: Segment Your Hours:** Dedicate early hours to families and kids, and reserve late-night slots for adult gamers. This ensures everyone feels comfortable and catered to. Offer Something for Everyone:** Combine video gaming, card games, and board games to appeal to a broad audience. Expert Tip:   Position your business as a "third space"—not home, not work, but a welcoming community hub. 4. Blending Retro and Modern Gaming Experiences  Key Insight:   The founders are passionate about reviving the social, in-person gaming experience, blending nostalgia with cutting-edge technology. Actionable Advice: Create a Retro Room:** Set up classic consoles (think Atari, Donkey Kong, Mario Party) alongside modern PCs and consoles. This attracts both older gamers and curious younger players. Encourage Social Play:** Design your space to foster face-to-face interaction—couches, shared tables, and group tournaments. Expert Tip:   Host "throwback nights" or themed events to celebrate gaming history and bring generations together. 5. Making Collectible Cards Accessible and Fun  Key Insight:   Run It Back started as a card shop and remains committed to making collecting accessible, especially for kids. Actionable Advice: Combat Scalping:** Keep prices fair and offer free packs or affordable options for young collectors. Diversify Inventory:** Stock popular lines like Pokémon, Magic, and sports cards, but also introduce niche or international games (e.g., Azuki from Japan). Educate New Collectors:** Host "how-to" sessions or beginner nights to help newcomers learn the ropes. Expert Tip:   Use online platforms like Whatnot to reach a broader audience and move high-value inventory, but keep your in-store experience welcoming and inclusive. 6. Building Community Through Events and Tournaments  Key Insight:   Events are at the heart of Run It Back's community-building strategy, from casual tournaments to movie watch parties. Actionable Advice: Host Regular Tournaments:** Use simple, inclusive formats (e.g., names in a hat, double elimination) and keep entry fees low. Offer Prizes:** Even small rewards can boost participation and excitement. Create Social Events:** Movie nights, watch parties, and themed gatherings foster a sense of belonging. Expert Tip:   Encourage friendly competition and sportsmanship. Make sure your staff sets the tone for a welcoming, respectful environment. 7. Flexible Pricing and Memberships for All  Key Insight:   Run It Back offers a range of pricing options to suit different needs and budgets. Actionable Advice: Hourly Rates:** $10/hour for consoles, $12/hour for PCs. Free Board Gaming:** Keep some activities free to lower the barrier to entry. Membership Tiers:** Offer monthly memberships with perks like free hours, discounts, and exclusive access. Event Packages:** Birthday party packages ($299 for two hours) make the space accessible for special occasions. Expert Tip:   Regularly review your pricing to ensure it remains competitive and accessible, especially for families and young gamers. 8. Partnering with Local Businesses  Key Insight:   Collaboration with nearby businesses (like Papa John's for pizza) enhances the customer experience and strengthens community ties. Actionable Advice: Cross-Promote:** Work with local restaurants, shops, and service providers to offer bundled deals or special promotions. Support Each Other:** Refer your customers to neighboring businesses and vice versa. Expert Tip:   Joint events (e.g., pizza and gaming nights) can draw larger crowds and introduce your business to new audiences. 9. Leveraging Online Platforms for Growth  Key Insight:   Run It Back uses platforms like Whatnot, Instagram, Facebook, and Discord to build its brand and connect with customers. Actionable Advice: Sell Online:** Use auction sites to reach collectors beyond your local area. Stay Active on Social Media:** Share updates, event announcements, and behind-the-scenes content to keep your community engaged. Build a Discord Server:** Foster ongoing conversation and community among your most dedicated fans. Expert Tip:   Your website should be more than a digital business card—include inventory updates, event sign-ups, and community resources. 10. Continuous Improvement and Community Feedback  Key Insight:   Bill and Tony are committed to evolving their offerings based on customer feedback and community needs. Actionable Advice: Solicit Feedback:** Regularly ask customers what they'd like to see—new games, events, or amenities. Stay Agile:** Be willing to pivot or expand your offerings as trends and interests shift. Celebrate Milestones:** Mark anniversaries, big tournaments, or community achievements with special events. Expert Tip:   Transparency and responsiveness build loyalty. Let your community know you're listening and adapting. 11. Final Thoughts: The Hometown Advantage  Run It Back's story is a testament to the power of local roots, friendship, and a genuine desire to serve the community. By blending nostalgia with innovation, and prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility, Bill and Tony have created more than just a gaming lounge—they've built a new "third space" for Grayslake. If you're in the area, stop by, say hello, and experience the magic for yourself. And if you're building your own community-focused business, take a page from Run It Back's playbook: stay rooted, stay flexible, and always put people first. Connect with Run It Back Instagram & Facebook:** Look for the big neon "Run It Back" sign Website:** Coming soon with inventory and event updates Discord:** Join to connect with fellow gamers and collectors Subscribe to the Discovery and Grayslake podcast for more local stories, and remember: a couple of random acts of kindness can make all the difference. See you next time!

Taylor Swift gave a woman $50K after she suffered major injuries from saving a kid. For SOME reason, Vinnie is reminded of finding his mother's diaphragm, and Bob has a crazy slumber party story. The Pokémon champions are here! A woman gets a DUI in the school pick-up line. Plus, When Did That Happen?!

What started as an experiment with a more structured debate format quickly became a larger conversation about the direction of the Pokémon franchise and what we think the future might hold. Has Pokémon become too casual? Do we really need a new battle gimmick every generation? How have Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME changed our relationship with our collections? Episode 205 – Dragons Rule the World Special Conditions is back! After a longer-than-planned break, Adam and Justin catch up on what's been happening in Pokémon, collecting, card shows, and life before diving into a huge weekend for the Pokémon TCG. Adam jumps back into competitive play at a local Worlds Celebration event and immediately walks away with the win using Garchomp. We break down the deck, why Unfair Stamp was so effective, some of the matchups he faced, and how a last-minute Switch inclusion literally saved the tournament. Then it's time for the 2026 Pokémon World Championships. We talk about Dragapult's continued grip on the format, some of the more interesting decks and plays we caught during the weekend, the difference between watching Dragapult and the slower formats of the past, and some of what PokémonXP brought to the Worlds experience. Plus, Justin catches everyone up on his recent Star Wars costuming adventures, Adam opens a pile of Prize Packs, and Adam's Vending Corner returns with lessons from another month of card shows—including why being the vendor who can find someone's random 13-cent reverse holo might be more rewarding than selling the expensive card. Question for the listeners: If you had played in the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, what deck would you have brought?

404 Coyote vs Acme Lives Wolverine Carnage Dolly Parton Tim Curry Peter CullenDoom Scrolling IntroThe Foos are back after a night at The Glass House seeing Spineshank and (hed) p.e., complete with an aging-but-still-functioning mosh pit, brewery stops, stouts, cider, and late-night al pastor burritos. Then the fast-food nostalgia wars continue. The Hello Kitty x Godzilla McDonald's collection is almost complete, Burger King is coming after millennials with Dragon Ball Super toys, Jack in the Box may have a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror takeover coming, and Krispy Kreme already got them with Pokémon. Apparently adults with disposable income are the new Happy Meal demographic. Before Geeking Out, Joe and Steph pay tribute to three icons lost this week: Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen. They look back at Dolly's music, philanthropy and surprising Buffy connection; Tim Curry's legendary roles from Rocky Horror and Clue to Pennywise; and Peter Cullen's unmistakable Optimus Prime voice and the touching story behind how he created it.Geeking Out starts with Coyote vs. Acme finally making it into theaters after nearly becoming a tax write-off. The Foos revisit the bizarre road that nearly buried the completed Looney Tunes movie and why its survival became bigger than the movie itself. Then Marvel's Wolverine turns the violence all the way up ahead of its PS5 release, with dismemberment, brutal combat and Logan behaving exactly like Wolverine should. EA's long-missing Iron Man game also resurfaces after unfinished gameplay leaks online, finally proving the project still exists.Star Wars gets tactical with Zero Company, a turn-based Clone Wars-era game that Joe immediately compares to XCOM. Steph also dives into the newest extended look at GTA VI, including Vice City, Jason and Lucia, preorder bonuses and the question everyone still has: is this game actually going to release? They close Geeking Out with the sad news that Tippett Studio is shutting down after 35 years, marking the end of another major piece of practical-effects history tied to Star Wars, RoboCop, Starship Troopers and more. Plus, LA Comic Con costume planning begins with April O'Neil, Casey Jones and the increasingly dangerous possibility of Joe showing up as Raphael in a trench coat. Here's What I Would Do brings two career dilemmas: Marcus in Pasadena finally lands his dream job, only to learn everyone he trusts says the company is miserable to work for. Anthony in El Monte faces something even heavier — his family expects him to take over the restaurant his grandparents started, but preserving the family legacy might mean giving up the career and life he actually wants.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroSpineshank + (hed) p.e. at The Glass HouseGodzilla Hello Kitty collection + Dragon Ball Burger KingSimpsons Jack in the Box + Pokémon Krispy KremeFatality Dolly PartonFatality Tim CurryFatality Peter Cullen Optimus PrimeCoyote vs Acme finally hits theatersMarvel Wolverine PS5 brutalityLeaked Iron Man game footageStar Wars Zero CompanyGTA VI extended lookTippett Studio closes after 35 yearsLA Comic Con costume planningHere's What I Would Do Dream job with terrible reputationHere's What I Would Do Taking over the family restaurantOutro + Doom Scrolling OutroCoyote vs Acme, Marvel Wolverine, Wolverine PS5, Iron Man game, Star Wars Zero Company, GTA VI, Tippett Studio, Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, Peter Cullen, Optimus Prime, Dragon Ball Burger King, Hello Kitty Godzilla, The Foobar Show

It is a thrill to welcome back one of Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar's original guests, the impeccable James Sismanes, to the podcast!  James Sismanes is an award-winning audio and visual storyteller from Melbourne, Australia. A small business owner by day (ImagiWorks Agency, Vision One Technologies) and a full-time creative by night, James is a multi-dimensional make-believer and dreamer of the (almost!) impossible. With over 500+ sales on the acclaimed AudioJungle marketplace, a debut children's book (The Marvellous Mullabaloos Only Wear Blue) and a diverse and unique business/branding portfolio, James is always on the hunt for the next “big idea.”  James' screenplays (“Dr. Claus,” “The Ballad of Bam Barlow,” “Bliss Inc.,” and “Tilt”) have consistently ranked on Coverfly‘s “The Red List,” and he has placed as a finalist or semi-finalist in various screenwriting competitions (including the Emerging Screenwriters, Screencraft, So Cal Screenplay, and New York International Screenplay Awards).  Behind a MIDI controller, James has collaborated on records with award-winning and globally-recognised artists like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Josh Levi, B2K, Pretty Ricky (Emanuel Deanda), Gabe Lustman, Minus Gravity, K Major and Giulietta. When he's not writing, producing, designing, sales-pitching, and daydreaming like a world-saving superhero, James enjoys eating cheeseburgers and chicken parmigianas, conquering Xbox tournaments, watching Friends reruns, catching Pokémon, and dealing with the heartache of being a Barça and Cleveland sports fan.  On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, James Sismanes spoke about embracing AI in his creative process, previewed Code Name: G.E.L.A.T.O., his latest work-in-progress animated feature, and shared his thoughts on Michael and the second chapter of the Michael Jackson biopic.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

Jamal and Chris get into a major change coming to Wayfarer, and this one could fundamentally change how Pokémon GO players think about Wayspot nominations. Beginning September 1st, new PokéStop nominations started in Pokémon GO will send Wayfinders over to the Wayfarer website to complete their submission. Jamal and Chris break down why they both love the change, what it could mean for casual nominators, and some of the potential bumps along the way. Topic #1 – Pokémon GO Is Sending Us to Wayfarer Is this finally the move that separates “submitting a PokéStop” from nominating a Wayspot? The guys discuss the new workflow, web drafts, mobile versus desktop submissions, browser and login concerns, and whether this is another step toward Wayfarer becoming the true home of the Wayspot network. Topic #2 – Are Better Tools Making Better Wayfinders? With the Wayspot Map, Web Submission, satellite imagery, S2 overlays, Wayfarer Map Mods and years of community knowledge at our fingertips, today's Wayfinder has access to more information than ever before. But does better information actually make better Wayfinders, or does it just make people better at optimizing the gameboard? Jamal and Chris get into the difference between optimization and manipulation and what happens when a whole new group of Wayfinders suddenly gets introduced to everything Wayfarer has to offer. Plus, One's Gotta Go: Toy Edition puts LEGO, Hot Wheels, Nerf and Super Soakers on the chopping block. We've got two fantastic Wayspots of the Week, including an incredible rainbow playground shot, and Kroner delivers a Coal of the Week that is, quite literally, coal.

INTERVIEW | Make Money Selling on Amazon, Whatnot, and Simple Physical Products with Stephen Somers

Stephen Somers is the founder of Marketplace Superheroes, an online education company that has helped more than 10,000 people build side incomes by selling on Amazon and Whatnot. After starting his career as a data processor in Dublin, Ireland, Stephen built a multi-seven-figure Amazon business alongside his sister and CEO, Lisa Summers. Today, he has sold more than $40 million worth of products, coaching, software, and services and has recently helped his team generate nearly $500,000 in trading card sales on Whatnot. In this episode, Stephen shares how he escaped the traditional 9-to-5 path, built a successful online business, and found new opportunities in live-commerce marketplaces. On this episode we talk about: Why Stephen chose entrepreneurship after realizing the traditional career path wasn't for him How he got his start selling physical products on eBay and Amazon with almost no startup capital Why you don't need to invent a groundbreaking idea to build a successful business How entrepreneurs can find opportunities by getting better at one specific part of an established business model How Whatnot's live-shopping and auction model works and how Stephen's team is making money selling Pokémon trading cards Top 3 Takeaways You don't need a revolutionary idea to make money. Some of the best businesses are built around simple, established products or services with one part of the process executed exceptionally well. Marketplaces can eliminate some of the hardest parts of starting a business. Selling through platforms like Amazon and Whatnot gives entrepreneurs access to customers who are already looking to buy, allowing them to focus on sourcing products and selling effectively. Entrepreneurship is ultimately about buying yourself more choice. Stephen views financial success less as accumulating money and more as creating the freedom to decide how he spends his time, works, and lives. Notable Quotes "The best businesses are actually like just really obvious crap that you just do it a bit better." "We're trying to buy choice as well. And we're trying to trade so we can get choices." "You don't have to go out and reinvent the wheel. You just have to, you know, put a different spoke on it." Lured Up - A Pokémon GO Podcast

Lured Up Podcast 406 - Happy Trails Live Streamed on - 8/26/2026 Listen to this episode ad free on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/PokemonProfessor  When the pacing of the game is nonstop, even a slow down feels like a break. While we had the wrap up of the Water Festival, the kickoff of the Worlds event and Mega Starmie over the weekend, we still know that the road to the finale is upon us. We will be swimming in events and activity over the next few weeks, so it's time to prepare both on and off screen. The news cycle never cares about how exhausted we are with the announcement of the next season in Pokémon GO, Twilight Trails! While we have the key art and a few bits of information, it will likely be a few weeks before we can really start to get the vibe of things. It brings up the discussion of the importance of seasons, and if they are necessary to the game anymore. We don't really see any narrative, and the events just flow into each other. We would love to hear what you think about seasons and what you want out of them. Wayfarer is having a major update that moves it further to being an independent tool outside of Pokémon GO. Beginning on September 1st, you will be taken to the Wayfarer Website to manage nominations and all of Wayfarer, rather than remaining inside of Pokémon GO. The reaction is mixed, with more casual Wayfinders being reluctant to want to move, and the experienced map-makers loving the decision.  We wrap up with a Professor's Principle about “Protecting your peace”. There are plenty of things within the game and community that can have an impact on your mental state. We see tons of anger and negativity online every day. That has a negative impact on your peace, as it drains some energy out of you that could have been used for something positive. We discuss how finding things that being you joy while letting go of things that drain you is a fantastic approach to shifting your energy. Rather than needing to find more energy (we are already exhausted), we talk about releasing energy that we are spending in a negative way, and reallocating it to something that supports your joy and peace. We open with banter, discussing Division II football quality and transfer opportunities, then shift to Drake's injuries and severe sleep apnea concerns. Kevin joins joins into a brief Pokémon debate before the show welcomes new sponsor Game Day Men's Health and previews their services. They discuss new Big Ten/SEC rules preventing NFL training-camp players from returning to college, glance at early FanDuel Heisman odds, and note Iowa's Little League World Series run. The group promotes an upcoming Fry Fest booth and merch, then dives into Iowa football: Kirk Ferentz says the QB competition between Hank Brown and Heklinski has swung back and forth, specialists are all new, and punter/kicker situations remain uncertain.
