Bible Reading: John 15:9-15 When Porter came home from school, he had a big smile on his face. "You seem to be in a good mood," Mom said."Yeah, I am," said Porter. "I think I finally have a best friend!" "Oh?" Mom turned to look at him. "Who's your best friend?" "Seth--the new kid who came to our school a couple months ago," Porter replied. "I see," said Mom. "What makes him your best friend?"Porter thought a moment. "Well, we always have fun playing games or talking or just hanging out. We help each other, and we cheer each other up if one of us feels bad about something. I have other friends too, and so does Seth, but we just understand each other the best and like spending time together. That means we're best friends."Mom nodded. "You know what?" she said. "You just described my relationship with my best friend too--except for one thing. My best friend did something extra special for me a long time ago. Something no other friend could ever do.""Really? What did your best friend do for you?" asked Porter.Mom smiled. "He loved me so much He died for me so I could spend eternity with Him." "Oh! You're talking about Jesus, aren't you? I never really thought about Him as a best friend.""He'll be your best friend if you let Him," said Mom. "You can do some of the same kinds of things with Jesus that you like to do with Seth. You can talk to Him, and you can listen when He talks to you through His Word, the Bible--or even when He just quietly impresses something on your heart. You can include Jesus in everything you do. He cares about you and is always there for you, just like a best friend.""Yeah, He is, isn't He?" said Porter thoughtfully. He grinned. "I'm sure Seth won't mind if I have another best friend, especially after I tell him who He is and what He's done for me. And I'll tell him I don't mind if he makes Jesus his best friend too." Diane V. GodboldHow About You?Do you have a best friend? Friends are special blessings--especially Christian friends. They are gifts from God, and He wants us to enjoy the friendships we have with others. But Jesus is the most faithful friend of all, and He wants to be your friend. He did what no other friend could do for you--He died and rose again to save you from sin. Make Him your very best friend by trusting in Him today. If you asked multi-instrumentalist and accomplished jazz musician, Hamilton Hardin, if he’d ever enter the pop world, he says he would have simply laughed. That’s why he surprised himself by serving as vice president of A&R (artists and repertoire), a multi-million dollar record label specializing in pop music. In this episode of Creative Strings Podcast, Hamilton reveals what makes pop music so appealing, how he gained a respect for the genre and what its like being producer, mixer, sound engineer, and editor for famous talent. When Porter decided to launch his own music studio in Memphis, he turned to Hardin, offered him a critical job- vice president of Artists and Repertoire, the side of the music house responsible for recruiting and developing talent.
Billy Porter just got the world's attention at the 91st Annual Oscar's Awards with his red carpet appearance in a Pseudo-Tuxedo Gown. Many in the fashion word would see him as courageous and ground-breaking with his fashion move. For the many males who aren't into fashion and who are wired to be "manly men" this red carpet appearance is disrespectful especially towards black manly men. Fashion and Hollywood are leading the charge in how black men and boys are seen and portrayed on screen. The mainstream media is out really pushing the "it's o.k. to be a gay black male agenda". When Porter was asked about why he wore the Pseudo-Tux Gown, he responded by saying, "he wanted to be a political piece of art." In an interview with Vogue, he said and is quoted saying," A man can wear a dress and still be masculine; he's just a man in a dress." He also saying this as a gay man. This is a really big issue in the black community because of the lack of strong black male influence and positive male energy "masculinity". Many people male and female are not looking at this in the correct context of the lasting effects that this is already having on the black community. The female population is split and this leads to half of the female population saying that he is "slaying" the fashion world, while the other half of women are asking,"What the hell is he doing with that gown on?" Women are asking the same questions for the last 35 to 40 years, but with a twist,"How do I raise a successful black male in this country when the country is pushing a gay black male agenda?" Billy Porter has no idea what he has started with his "man in a dress" statement in the black community. Welcome to another episode of Startup Handmedowns! We promise this episode was worth the wait! This week, we chat with Porter Braswell, co-founder and CEO of Jopwell, a career advancement platform for people of colour. As Porter describes, Jopwell was created out of necessity. When Porter entered the finance industry, he noticed that there were very few people in the industry that looked like him, and as a black man who had many opportunities that most people of colour are systematically barred from, he allocated the responsibility onto himself to fight for diversity in the workforce. Part of the reason why Jopwell is so successful is that Porter is able to foster a community that is about more than just finding a job. He knows that bigotry isn’t something that is just felt in a controlled environment like work or school; being a marginalized person means that you experience the world differently, giving you a unique perspective on the world around you. This can make it very hard to find success in a workforce that heavily favours white men, but what many companies are discovering with the help of Jopwell is that the diversity of thought resulting from a diverse workforce is extremely valuable.
When Porter wakes up in the hospital, he tries to piece together what happened.Did you enjoy this episode? Please rate us and leave a review! Seattle-based Ransom and the Subset are set to release their debut album “No Time to Lose” on October 7, 2014. Fronted by RanDair Porter, Ransom and the Subset are an alternative rock band full of harmonies, magnetic power-pop chords, and soaring keyboard riffs that build arrangements that keep listeners coming back. When Porter assembled the band, he picked the best musicians he knew; producer and multi-instrumentalist Brian E. King (Guitar/Bass/Keys) and Grammy-winning engineer Ducky Carlisle (Drums/Background Vocals). Together they deliver a dynamic blend of heightened pop sensibilities and modern rock influences that appeal to all audiences. Accompanied by a 21-piece band, Rory Partin is spreading his genuine passion for entertaining and making great music people can enjoy and most important, dance to. Having traveled to and performed in places such as Brussels, Paris, Prague, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Toronto, London, Helsinki, and many more, Partin plays standards, new songs, long-time favorites, and Cajun music from his home state Louisiana. There is nothing like Partin out there today. He can move from standards, to love songs to pop with ease and joy. And he has a new album of all of the above out. And he is with us this Friday to tell us how he does it.
