Donna, Becki, Joe, and John talk about this week's Bible passage in preparation for the upcoming Sunday message.
A study released last October showed that movie remakes tend to lose money. Yet the film industry, for a variety of reasons, keeps churning them out. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Mary Pat Treuthart and Nathan Weinbender discuss one recent remake, Spike Lee's film “Highest 2 Lowest,” which is his version of Ed McBain's 1959 novel “King's Ransom,” as well as take a look back at another McBain adaptation, Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film “High and Low.”
Send us a textWho would win in a fight between the Ninja Turtles and the Power Rangers? As they analyze fighting styles, weapons, and special abilities, nostalgic memories of Saturday morning cartoons emerge, leading to a spirited discussion about UPN's golden era of Black television shows. The conversation shifts to boxing's decline as they evaluate the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Mike Tyson exhibition match. "Not all money is worth it," one host argues, questioning why legends risk their legacy for exhibition fights that won't count toward official records. This prompts a deeper conversation about boxing's lost cultural relevance. Things get juicy when we dissect Young Thug's leaked jail phone calls that have revealed shocking comments about fellow artists including Future, Kendrick Lamar, and his alleged infidelity against girlfriend Mariah the Scientist. "These calls are dropping like mixtapes used to in the early 2000s," they observe, questioning who might have a vendetta against the Atlanta rapper. The episode closes with a thought-provoking moral dilemma from Denzel Washington's latest film: if you had $18 million and kidnappers demanded $17.5 million for someone else's child they mistakenly took instead of yours, would you pay? For this week's main podcast review, Josh Parham, Giovanni Lago, Daniel Howat, Brendan Hodges, and Tom O'Brien join me to review and discuss the latest Spike Lee joint, "Highest 2 Lowest," starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera & ASAP Rocky. It is an English-language remake and reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese film High and Low, itself based on the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain. It marks the first collaboration between Lee and Washington since "Inside Man" in 2006. The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to positive reviews, but what did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the direction, themes, performances, music, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! On this week's episode, Sonny, Alyssa, and Peter discuss the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots at Disney World, as chronicled in this New York Times piece. Then they review Caught Stealing, the new Darren Aronofsky film that's being marketed like a Guy Ritchie caper but is something else entirely. Some spoilers over the last 15 minutes or so of this pod, so just keep an ear out if you're worried about that sort of thing. Swing by the Bulwark on Thursday for a bonus episode on High and Low and King's Ransom, the movie and book, respectively, on which Spike Lee's new film, Highest 2 Lowest is based. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!
