Mit seinem 4. Klavierkonzert betritt Sergei Rachmaninow Neuland. Als er das Werk 1926 vollendete, lebte er bereits seit fast einem Jahrzehnt im amerikanischen Exil. Die Musikwelt hatte sich verändert: Jazz war allgegenwärtig, die Moderne auf dem Vormarsch. Auch Rachmaninow suchte nach neuen Ausdrucksformen. Das Ergebnis war ein Klavierkonzert, das sich deutlich von seinen berühmten Vorgängern unterscheidet – schlanker, rhythmisch markanter und überraschend modern. Die Uraufführung 1927 in Philadelphia verlief jedoch enttäuschend: Publikum und Kritiker vermissten die grossen, eingängigen Melodien der früheren Konzerte. Rachmaninow nahm sich die Kritik zu Herzen und überarbeitete das Werk gleich mehrfach. Die heute gespielte Fassung von 1941 ist deutlich kürzer und konzentrierter als das Original. Lange Zeit blieb das vierte Klavierkonzert ein Aussenseiter im Repertoire. Im Schatten des zweiten und dritten Konzerts wurde es nur selten aufgeführt. Erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten begann eine eigentliche Wiederentdeckung. Heute schätzen viele Pianistinnen und Pianisten gerade jene Qualitäten, die das Publikum einst irritierten: die raffinierte Harmonik, die rhythmische Energie und die ungewöhnliche Verbindung von russischer Spätromantik und amerikanischem Zeitgeist. In der Diskothek stehen fünf Aufnahmen von Rachmaminows g-Moll-Konzert zur Diskussion. Gäste von Eva Oertle sind die Pianistin Aglaia Graf und der Pianist Manuel Bärtsch.

SoJung Kim joins the podcast to share her journey from discovering the double bass in Korea to joining the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. A graduate student at the Colburn Conservatory studying with Peter Lloyd, SoJung has performed with the One Korea Youth Orchestra and Orchestra Ensemble Seoul, spent summers at the Pacific Music Festival and Music Academy of the West, and first came to the instrument after hearing the deep resonance of a bass ensemble at her cousin's concert. We talk about SoJung's move from solo repertoire into the world of orchestral excerpts, the wake-up call of studying alongside highly prepared Colburn colleagues, and the practice routines that helped her prepare for a massive San Francisco Opera and Ballet audition list. She shares why long tones and glissando work became central to her warmup, how recording lessons and asking for feedback shaped her preparation, and what she has learned from playing Nutcracker and other ballet repertoire night after night. We dig into Orion's audition journey, including getting cut from the San Francisco Symphony preliminaries, rethinking how he prepared, and eventually winning the job after a trial week. Orion shares the practice system that changed everything for him, from 25% tempo work and Galamian-style rhythms to mock auditions, detailed listening, score study, and learning to trust the process. Sie lebten jahrelang in Kommunen und erzogen ihren Sohn frei von Zwängen und Pflichten. Jetzt leben sie in einer kunterbunten Villa, bauen Gemüse und Gras an und engagieren sich politisch.  Leander ist unfähig einem geregelten Job nachzugehen und geht auch unangenehmen Aufgaben im Haushalt aus dem Weg. Don Prell passed away in 2026 at age 97. Born in 1929, Don went on the road with the Frank Ortega Band, played with people like Buddy Rich and Chet Baker, and was in the original Bud Shank Quartet. He played for the San Francisco Symphony for 30 years and, after retirement, formed his own group called the Sea Bop Ensemble, which played at various San Francisco spots, including the legendary Bay View Boat Club. The Southside Aces New CD, called The Big Beat, continues the Ace Tradition of Playing Old New Orleans Jazz, and also Interpreting a varied Repertoire in a New Orleans Way. The release event is at the Dakota in Minneapolis, Thursday July 16 at 7pm. When Southside Aces clarinetist Tony Balluff talked to Phil Nusbaum about the group, he first addressed how the Aces feel about playing the really old songs in the New Orleans repertoire.

During the Covid pandemic, retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Michael Troop got into audio production and that led to him pitching an idea to Bryce Alexander from the Naples Players to recreate, from the ground up with professional and amateur actors, and full sound design, old-time narrative radio shows from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s and the Repertoire Radio Theatre podcast was born and is now off and running.

British-Nigerian artist, filmmaker, and researcher Onyeka Igwe talks with curator Jeanette Pacher about her project No Archive Can Restore this Chorus of (Diasporic) Shame (2024/26) that lends its title also to her solo show; her interest in sound, especially protest songs, and her love for sacred harp singing, filming in the abandoned Nigerian Film Unit in Lagos, and her iterative practice. Their conversation was recorded on 11 June 2026 at the Secession. Onyeka Igwe No Archive Can Restore this Chorus of (Diasporic) Shame 12.6. – 30.8.2026 In the exhibition, two video works unfold in close relation to one another. The film traces the afterlives of British colonialism in Nigeria through the abandoned site of the former Nigerian Film Unit in Lagos – once a key outpost of the Colonial Film Unit's propaganda apparatus. Today, the building stands in disrepair. The images once housed there are difficult to access – not only due to their material degradation, but also because of a broader reluctance to confront what they contain. Presented on the window front, the moving image blends with the institution's architecture and urban surroundings, situating its sonic and visual field within the specific conditions of its display. More Onyeka Igwe is a London-born & based moving image artist and researcher. Her work is aimed at the question: how do we live together? Not to provide a rigid answer as such, but to pull apart the nuances of mutuality and co-existence in our deeply individualized world. Onyeka's practice figures sensorial, spatial and counter-hegemonic ways of knowing as central to that task. For her, the body, archives and narratives both oral and textual act as a mode of enquiry that makes possible the exposition of overlooked histories. The work comprises untying strands and threads, anchored by a rhythmic editing style, as well as close attention to the dissonance, reflection and amplification that occurs between image and sound. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with composer, performer, and educator Casey Cangelosi for a conversation that moves comfortably between teaching, podcasting, composing, and the realities of building a life in the percussion world. Casey teaches at James Madison University, where he directs a busy percussion studio and constantly balances artistic ambition with the practical challenges of giving students meaningful performance opportunities.We talk about how he approaches programming percussion ensemble, often leaning toward smaller-group repertoire that allows more students to develop chamber instincts and real musical ownership. That naturally leads into a larger discussion about education, specifically the gap that can exist between strong performance skills and deep knowledge of repertoire. Casey makes a compelling case for listening, score study, and curiosity as essential parts of becoming a complete musician.A big part of Casey's recent creative life has been the Percussion Podcast, where he hosted more than 300 episodes of conversations with percussionists and composers. He reflects honestly on what that project gave him, as a communicator, teacher, and community builder, as well as the real workload of producing that many episodes and the challenge of keeping conversations fresh over time.We also spend time inside Casey's composing process. He talks about the difference between writing for hands versus writing for humans, and how limitations, instrumentation, skill level, or context can actually unlock more interesting musical ideas. Increasingly, he's thinking about accessibility in repertoire: writing music that still feels compelling but can reach more performers instead of only fitting one ideal player.Toward the end, Casey shares some of the unexpected places his music has recently appeared, including projects connected to theater, dance, and visual art, from a performance context in Mannheim, to an installation tied to Ligeti's 100 Metronomes, to a circus production in Italy using his piece Bad Touch. His version includes guanciale or pancetta, DOP San Marzano tomatoes, a touch of balsamic vinegar (not traditional, but it lifts the whole dish), red pepper flakes, and Pecorino. Then, the main event: prime heritage pork chops from Boardman Bridge Butchers, two inches thick, served simply with salt, pepper, roasted sweet potato, and a salad. You learn something every single time you bake — the second attempt is always better than the first. Kate McDermott bakes a pie every single day and gives it away. Jessica's invented solution to the problem of getting enough repetitions: a silicone bread butt cheek (like the injection-training prop she used during IVF), so bakers could practice scoring without committing a whole loaf. It does not yet exist. Someone should make it. Amy's advice: read the recipe all the way through first.
