Music To Grow By: Repertoire Refreshers - PHH 102

Practicing Harp Happiness

If you're like me, and I'll bet you are, you have a lot of music you want to play…someday. My music used to be in piles next to my music stand, until the piles got so untidy that I filed everything in boxes. And every time I dive into one of those boxes to retrieve a piece I need to work on, I find a hidden treasure, a piece I bought long ago that I forgot about. It's like getting an early Christmas present - a new piece all ready for me to start. It takes all my willpower to also take out the piece I was looking for in the first place. If you love investigating new music too, then today's podcast episode is the one you've been waiting for. I have some pieces to share that might fill a gap in your gig repertoire or intrigue you or maybe even inspire you to try music you might not have thought was exactly your style.  There is something here for everyone, whether you're a lever or pedal harpist. The pieces are mostly at an intermediate level, but that's a pretty wide-ranging level, and you will notice that some are definitely more challenging than others. That's why I titled this show “Music to Grow By,” because a little bit of a stretch, either technically or musically or maybe both, is good for us. Some of the pieces are long-time favorites of mine. A few are relatively new discoveries. I love all of them, and my hope is that one of these may become a favorite of yours too.  Links to things I think you might be interested in that were mentioned in the podcast episode:  My Harp Mastery membership is open until midnight!  Join now! #220: Creating an Organ Repertoire for All Levels (with Joel Kumro)

Ministry Monday

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2023

Today's episode explores the world of pipe organ repertoire. I so often hear discussions of high-level performance pieces fit for excellent organ concerts, but so often we may not take the time to discuss an organ repertoire that's manageable and attainable for all levels of skill, and on a pastoral musician's available time frame for learning. Organists who may have started as pianists and are learning how to play organ, or maybe organists who are, quite frankly, overcommitted to other tasks, can find beautiful, accessible organ music that supports the Mass each week. That is the starting point from which I begin my conversation today. Today I speak with Joel Kumro, the Choirmaster and Organist at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond, VA. Joel is also director of his parish's concert series and is the instructor of Liturgical Music at Saint Benedict Catholic School. Joel, originally a trained classical singer, shares how he developed a regularly-rotating repertoire of organ music as he learned “the king of instruments” and how he's come to use it well today.

The Shortcut Way To Build And Maintain A Repertoire - PHH 099

Practicing Harp Happiness

Building a repertoire sounds like something only a master harpist would need to do. Yet all of us need to have music that we can play anytime and anywhere we want. But building a repertoire sounds like a huge project. I'm going to show you today that all you need to do to build - and more importantly, to maintain a repertoire - is one pen, 3 sticky notes and 5 minutes.  Impossible? Not impossible. In fact, we're going to take the seemingly impossible task of building a repertoire and make it simple. It's a little like turning a black diamond ski run into the bunny slope, or turning Mt. Everest into a molehill. Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration but if you've ever struggled with having pieces ready to play at a moment's notice or keeping those pieces you've finished in your fingers, you're going to find today's episode is a game changer.   One of the first coaching students I worked with online, and this was years ago, came to me with the goal of developing a repertoire. She was relatively new to the harp and that actually made my job easier. She had very few preconceived ideas about what a repertoire should be like: what kind of pieces she should play, how long they should be, how much music she needed and whether or not she had to have it memorized. In just twelve weeks she had forty-five minutes of music that she could play confidently; she had her repertoire. Twelve weeks to go from zero pieces to forty-five minutes was a really good time frame. There were two things that made that possible. First was her lack of “should's.” Because she hadn't put limitations or restrictions on what her repertoire should be like, she was open to possibilities that more seasoned harpists might have discarded. I'll talk about that more in a minute. Second, I introduced her to some shortcuts that made it easier to keep up with her pieces, to keep them in her fingers and relatively fresh in her mind too. Those are the shortcuts I'm going to be sharing with you today. So if your repertoire needs a refresh, a restart or just a boost to get off the ground, this is the information you need. We will take the shortcuts, whizz past the places where you may be stuck and clear up some of the thinking that may be keeping your repertoire in the “someday” pile. And all you will need to get started is a pen, three sticky notes and 5 minutes. And to listen to this episode first, of course. In this episode of the Repertoire podcast, host Justin Khanna shares his excitement about the return of solo episodes. Khanna highlights some of the most popular stories covered in past episodes, including a Twitter thread by startup founder Nick Huber, about the reality of running a profitable restaurant. The thread features a cautionary tale about a chef turned restaurateur who failed after opening a restaurant for selfish reasons and not being prepared to handle the responsibilities of running a business. Khanna gives his take on the lesson of the story, which is that starting a successful business is not about doing what you love, but rather about doing what gives you the best odds of making great money while managing the less fun aspects of the business. The episode also includes topics such as hostility in hospitality, Oreo's product release strategy, smart ovens, and checklist for fire spots. Get next week's newsletter in your inbox : https://www.joinrepertoire.com/newsletter Powered by 7shifts: https://www.7shifts.com/signup/?signup_coupon=JUSTINKHANNA3— Show Notes: From chef to owner - a thread by Nick Huber : https://twitter.com/sweatystartup/status/1635304028677472262?s=12&t=izTIHZ8Xxt58dnbjEDIGMQ5 Factors That Determine a Fire Spot : https://www.thesupersonic.blackbird.xyz/p/5-factors-that-determine-a-spotWhen Did Hospitality Get So Hostile? : https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/10/t-magazine/restaurants-hostile-eating-out.htmlToast Teams Up with Google to Launch a New Ordering Channel : https://pos.toasttab.com/news/toast-order-with-google-integrationOreo's Product Release Strategy : https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/16/style/oreo-flavors.htmlAre Smart Ovens Legit? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKCB1VBypWsPodcast on "1% Diners" - https://www.youtube.com/live/jdlLRAQemyI?feature=share&t=625Fine Dining 101 (see: Justin's call out about Cirque de Soleil) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmtA39qkx4M You can read my take on other such stories, in-depth, from the past newsletters here: https://support.justinkhanna.com/  — If you come across something you ended up having to search for, send me a message to help make this Show Notes better! —

The olfactory system presents us with alternative views of how sensory stimuli are parsed in the brain and how we integrate those into some sort of conscious worldview.   Dr. Stuart Firestein specializes in the olfactory system ⎯ why and how our brains and noses sense smell. Stuart is the former chair of Columbia University's Department of Biological Sciences and a neurobiology professor, where his laboratory studies the vertebrate olfactory system, possibly the best chemical detector on the face of the planet.   Stuart is devoted to the history, evolution, and future of science. Gloria Jones Allgood joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at age 20 in 1984, just before completing her Bachelor's Degree in Double Bass Performance at The University of Michigan.   Born into a musical family in Greenville, SC, she studied violin and piano until age 12 when she started studying the bass. She was a member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra for five years before college, soloing with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra at age 14. Six of her summers were spent at Interlochen Center of the Arts, studying with Lawrence Hurst, Oscar Zimmerman, and Jack Budrow. She also studied with her late husband, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Principal Bass Ralph Jones for two years in high school.    While at The University of Michigan, Allgood was Principal Bass of the Flint Symphony Orchestra from 1982-1984, and she received the Mitslav Rostropovich Award for Outstanding Musicianship. She studied on Full Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival in the summers of 1983 and 1984, studying with Stuart Sankey.   Joining the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as a section player, she was promoted to Assistant Principal in 1989 and to Associate Principal in 2001. Additionally, she served as Acting Principal Bass during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. She teaches privately, coaches the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, participates in the Talent Development Program and has performed in many chamber music groups around Atlanta.
