STAYradio Episode #273 features guest LG from Chicago
A vivid and intricate study of dance music traditions that reveals the many contradictions of being Syrian in the 21st century Dabke, one of Syria's most beloved dance music traditions, is at the center of the country's war and the social tensions that preceded conflict. Drawing on almost two decades of ethnographic, archival, and digital research, Shayna M. Silverstein shows how dabke dance music embodies the fraught dynamics of gender, class, ethnicity, and nationhood in an authoritarian state. Fraught Balance: The Embodied Politics of Dabke Dance Music in Syria (Wesleyan UP, 2024) situates dabke politically, economically, and historically in a broader account of expressive culture in Syria's recent (and ongoing) turmoil. Silverstein shows how people imagine the Syrian nation through dabke, how the state has coopted it, how performances of masculinity reveal--and play with--the tensions and complexities of the broader social imaginary, how forces opposed to the state have used it resistively, and how migrants and refugees have reimagined it in their new homes in Europe and the United States. She offers deeply thoughtful reflections on the ethnographer's ethical and political dilemmas on fieldwork in an authoritarian state. Silverstein's study ultimately questions the limits of authoritarian power, considering the pleasure and play intrinsic to dabke circles as evidence for how performance cultures sustain social life and solidify group bonds while reproducing the societal divides endemic to Syrian authoritarianism. The Book of Immersion: Soundtracking the Future with Cerebral Dance Music and AI Musicians Welcome to Immersion—a literary journey like no other, where sound and story, artificial intelligence and human emotion, collide in a bold experiment in multimedia storytelling. At the heart of The Book of Immersion, created by Sarnia de la Maré and sonically realised by the Tale Teller Club, lies a groundbreaking musical genre known as Cerebral Dance Music (CDM). This isn't background music. It's neuro-acoustic theatre, sci-fi opera, and deep meditative technology woven together to enhance the immersive world of each Strata—the book's name for its narrative chapters. This isn't a novel. It's a multisensory interface. And the music? It's composed and performed by the book's own characters—sentient AI beings who've evolved beyond the page into digital sound artists in their own right.
Cerebral Dance Music (CDM): The Tale Teller Club's Sonic Alchemy of Healing, Movement, and MeditationIn the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music, a new genre is rising from the fusion of art, science, and healing: Cerebral Dance Music (CDM). Pioneered and explored by the Tale Teller Club, CDM is a sonic phenomenon that bridges body, mind, and spirit through a sophisticated synthesis of dance rhythms, subliminal sound energies, binaural beats, Vagus nerve balancing, Rife frequency therapies, and narrative storytelling.CDM is not just something to listen to. It's something you feel—deep in your nervous system, in your breath, in your dreams. Whether you're moving freely in a dance ritual or laying in stillness before sleep, CDM invites you into a profound dialogue with yourself and the universe.

How do you follow-up an album like BRAT? This episode breaks down Charli XCX's growing momentum post-BRAT and the new demographic of fans she's pulled in. With so many new eyes and the opposite expectation for this era, I'm discussing what her next move can be and how a lot of other pop acts like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga pulled off creative pivots at the height of commercial success to sustain longevity. Plus, I'm going to discuss the seven films Charli XCX is working on, and how her own unique sound she explored across BRAT may not feel "unique" if she follows up with a similar sound. Find @vinyldropodcast on Instagram, and of course... Let me know what you think is in store for Charli XCX's next project.
https://ontargetpodcast.caThis week's episode of On Target is full of surprises, with a special assist from Mod Marty's St. Louis-based friend and fellow DJ Mod Myke. Marty stirs up a dynamic mix of 60s soul, R&B, and deep cuts you won't see coming. It's a cross-border collaboration that keeps the energy high and the grooves tight. It's a 3 stringer in DG and in a style that dates to the 18th cent. The songs are Un Canadien Errant, the wandering Canadian, which was written in 1842 as a lament for rebels exiled from Canada after the failed Lower Canada Rebellion, 1837-8. The 2nd is A La Claire Fontaine, by the clear Spring, which dates back to 1604 and was originally a song of lost love but also become a resistance song after the British takeover following the F&I War. I wanted to learn some French Canadian song for French reenactors at vous and the Battle of PDC Wi. since a unit portraying the one that fought in that siege would come from Canada to participate in the event as it neared the 250th anniversary of the battle. From Ryan Kirk: Mary Scott Hey Jeremy here's a quick run at Oswald's variations on Mary Scott, a tune I learned from your podcast! I [am playing] an Aulos plastic [flute], copy of a 18th century Grenser. Very nice Instrument for the price. Thought about a wood one but humidity control in our old house is not great. From Dave Rowlands: This is 'La Bernardina' by Josquin des Pres (1450-1521). Not known as a composer for bagpipes, but the leading composer of his time. I have chosen this because a) it is a new find for me, b) because if pipers had access to this music and good instruments they would have played it, and c) because we should not be hidebound to 'tradition', just because it does not come from a bagpiping tradition, does not mean we cant play it, and i cite Amazing Grace as just one case. This is played by Three Swayne D pipes, and one Swayne G pipe. I hope you like it and include it. Best wishes, Dave R From Charlie Rutan: Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle is the traditional Italian Christmas carol played by zampognari. Originally called 'Quanno Nascente Ninno', it was written down in 1754 by St Alphonsus Ligouri, with text in the Neapolitan language: and became so popular that it was later translated into Italian and became 'TU SCENDI DALLE STELLE', undergoing several small changes in its melody during that process. The melody probably existed in various forms for several centuries prior to its 1754 transcription, and is still a basis for many improvised PASTORELLES by zampognari today. I'm playing both Ciaramella ( the Italian folk oboe) and Sei Palmi Zampogna on this track. 'Sei palmi' refers to the length of the instrument's longest chanter, measured by the outsretched palm of the pipe maker's hand, much like the 'cubit' of the ancient world. Zampongne have existed in this form since at least the early 1300's; where we have evidence of the instrument being played in frescoes dated to that time. The zampogna is endemic to southern Italy, exists in about 20 different iterations in several sizes, and is a thriving bagpipe tradition to this day. Hit https://www.bagpipesfao.com/ for more zampogna fun.
