When Mark Partin first became CFO at BlackLine nearly a decade ago, the concept of Sales Ops was still rather new within the company, and he was tasked with building it from scratch. Over time, Sales Ops evolved into Revenue Ops, integrating finance, sales, and customer success functions to support BlackLine's rapid growth. In this discussion, Partin shares critical milestones, including consolidating over 100 systems to achieve a "single source of truth," aligning departments around the customer journey, and leveraging data to drive productivity and efficiency—a transformative journey that enabled sustainable growth.

Twenty-seven years ago, while in his late twenties, Mark Partin arrived inside the C-suite largely unprepared for the flood of challenges that would quickly breach his desk. Or so Partin tells us as he recounts the circumstances surrounding the first of five CFO appointments that have thus far punctuated his finance leadership career.“I can and do love to suffer,” Partin comments, describing the experience as being “over my head” and demanding him to “level up,” or constantly “reach to the next level” to succeed. For Partin, who had been named CFO of a publicly traded company despite his young age and lack of prior CFO experience, success in the role can be attributed to his unique partnership with the CEO. “He allowed me to have that role and the Board did because he was to be my mentor, and he would help me along the way,” explains Partin. Still, there's no question the CEO got something valuable in return, given Partin's “level up” mindset and his willingness to work harder than anyone else. This first CFO role cemented Partin's belief that the CEO–CFO partnership is the most critical relationship in any company. This CEO, whom Partin describes as a “driver,” was dependent on Partin's success, reinforcing how essential trust and collaboration are in shaping any firm's future. This experience influenced Partin's leadership approach in the four CFO appointments that followed, in which he continued to rely on many important and purposeful strategic partnerships. Now, after nearly a decade as CFO of BlackLine, Partin tells us that he still believes that "leveling up" and fostering strong CEO relationships have been key drivers of whatever his success may continue to be, guiding his strategic mindset and pragmatic leadership to this day.

Bill Partin, the recently retired CEO at nearly $2 billion Sharonview Federal Credit Union in the Carolinas, went there after a long career at multiple Southern California credit unions where he ended in the c-suite at Partners, the Burbank based institution created to serve Walt Disney Company employees. At Partners he worked for then CEO John Janclaes and one day Partin asked his boss when he planned to retire. He said in effect not soon.Partin then told him he wanted to be a CEO and so he would be looking elsewhere. His boss did the right thing: he supported him completely.Soon Partin landed the job at Sharonview and, in the show, he tells about his journey there. But there's a lot more in this show. For instance: Partin started in credit unions as a part time teller when he was putting himself through a community college. He kept working at credit unions as he proceeded to earn a bachelor's degree - and he just stayed in the industry because he knew it was where he wanted to be.Nowadays Partin has authored a book, The Leadership Bet, and he's also on the speakers circuit talking up that topic. What is the leadership bet? It's the three pronged formula he implemented at Sharonview -*Be disciplined*Execute your plan*Take risksWait: take risks! Isn't risk a four letter word in a CU exec's vocabulary? You bet - well, maybe you don't bet. But, yes, risk is a tough concept for CU execs to embrace. Partin explains why it's essential, especially today.Keep listening until the end because just maybe the meatiest points are served up last as Partin talks about the how to of creating a good credit union board - and why many boards aren't what they need to be. It's hot stuff.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Find out how you can help sponsor this podcast here. Very affordable sponsorship packages are available. The Fairgrounds Speedway is a Nashville institution. It's held car races and horse races since 1904, and still had horse racing up until 1957 when they paved the track. It held NASCAR races up until 1984, when disputes between city government and track management put an end to it. But it has continued to be a local and regional spot for car racing. In 2011, Nashville voters passed a referendum that obligated the city to maintain the track for racing. For years, Bristol Motor Speedway has been courting the city with a plan to renovate the track, in part to attract NASCAR and other big races back to Nashville. Mayor John Cooper is championing a proposal under consideration by the Fair Board Commission that would give Bristol the greenlight to update the Speedway. However, residents who live near the Speedway are concerned about what kind of traffic, congestion and noise an improved track will bring to their neighborhood. In this episode, we'll hear from residents who are both for and against the proposal. But first, it's time for @ US! Host Khalil Ekulona and digital lead Anna Gallegos-Cannon respond to listener feedback and questions. Loneliness can be a very troubling feeling for us as ministry wives. How can we be surrounded by people and yet still feel totally alone? Rivers Partin joins me today to explain how acknowledging loneliness and its gifts has allowed her to become more connected to herself, others, and most importantly, God. SHOW NOTES Loneliness is a gift–our soul signaling to us that we need to make some changes. Acknowledge the loneliness and try to identify which of the three types you are experiencing: with self, others, or God. Sometimes God allows seasons of loneliness to drive us to Him. QUOTES “The answer to why loneliness exists would be that we were created for relationship. We were created for intimacy. We were created to be known and to know others. You can’t escape it because it’s what we were designed for. What loneliness does is it drives us. It’s a signal to us that we aren’t in strong, solid relationships where we’re known, where we feel like we belong. There is goodness to that.” -Rivers Partin “I think sometimes God allows seasons of loneliness, because He wants to teach us that relationships with other people are never going to fully satisfy the longing that we have for connection. He’s going to give us the gift of community and friendship, but ultimately we need Him.” -Christine Hoover “Intimacy is the opposite of loneliness. It’s mutual knowing and being known. Vulnerability begets intimacy, being known, being laid bare. ‘This is me, these are my faults, this is who I am.' Intimacy is not saying, ‘I’m gonna stay here or you’re gonna allow me to stay here in my faults or brokenness or mistakes.’ But it is allowing another to know those things and then moving forward with grace and kindness for one another.” -Rivers Partin LINKS FROM THE SHOW The Voice of the Heart Head over to www.ministrywivespodcast.com to check out the great content already on the site!
