That's right. We finally took a leap off the edge of safety into the abyss of conspiracy. We know the rules: No speaking ill of the greatest communist regime on earth (China), no implications that the CIA had anything to do with the development and spread of the strongest cold we've seen in a while, no downplaying the man-made virus. It's super strong and kills like everyone it touches – way worse than the black plague. No mocking of the Bill Gates serum that he has marketed as a “vaccine”. Those are the rules. God damn it, we broke Every. Single. One. Will the tech overlords ban our small little podcast or worse yet, will Brett get a visit from the black suits soon and taken to some undisclosed location never to be heard of again until his story is told in ‘Rendition 2'? While Brett micro doses on red pills, Eduardo tries to reel him back in with news of Kanye West's latest (and possibly dopest) album to date. For those of you lucky enough to hear this episode before it's banned and the Tip Touch co-hosts end up on some government watch list, we hope you enjoy the show! Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday January 13th and we're here with local news, events, announcements, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.  Today -- Local businesses that hold a liquor license are receiving some support through a Senate Bill that was signed into law by Governor Jared Polis last month. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com Before we begin, a quick update on what's going on in our community. The City of Montrose offices will close in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. Although the city has been operating with limited public access due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City Hall, the visitor center, municipal court, animal shelter, Montrose Pavilion, and Public Works will all close in observance of the holiday. A portion of $134 million in federal stimulus funds allocated to the Colorado Department of Transportation will go to highway improvements on U.S. 50 between Delta and Grand Junction, as well as to resurfacing Colorado 141 north of Nucla. Now, our feature story. Local businesses that hold a liquor license or entrepreneurs in pursuit of a liquor license are receiving some support through a Senate Bill that was signed into law by Governor Jared Polis last month. Of the $57 million from the bill, more than $1.891 million was allocated to the Department of Revenue. This money is intended to offset the department's waiver of certain liquor license fees. Included in the bill is the establishment of fee waivers, both for new licenses and license renewal fees. This will lead to sizable savings for business owners in the community since a new liquor license can be as high as $3,000. Late fees for renewals are also waived. Those fees traditionally run $500. The City of Montrose, too, will receive some relief as the state has waived fees for COVID temporary modifications. Though the bill has some additional waivers, it doesn't include the transfer of an existing license and the concurrent review fees. Montrose City Clerk Lisa DelPiccolo recently joined mayor Barbara Bynum during a Business Update to discuss these recent changes. Establishments that are eligible for the fee waivers include hotels and restaurants, brew pubs, as well as lodging and entertainment and taverns. Not eligible  This COVID-19 relief bill comes as establishments with onsite licenses continue to utilize strategies for alcohol consumption to weather financial hits. And in 2020, modifications were made to allow for off premises consumption. Other changes include differences in how to define an acceptable container.  With the first quarter of 2021 expected to maintain noticeable COVID-19 restrictions, recent legislation from the state aims to help small businesses continue to navigate the current landscape. As of late, the city has approved some liquor license applications to new businesses in the community, including San Juan Brews and the newly constructed Maverik. City officials have offered support to local businesses who may seek more information regarding the slew of changes introduced in the bill. Mayor Barbara Bynum said that a great place to start is with your local office here with the city. Thanks for listening, finally, we'd like to take a moment today to remember the life of James Brett Edmondson. Brett was born in 1960 in Montrose. He spent most of his life in group homes in Grand Junction and Delta, where he loved big and was loved in return. He was unable to talk, and instead used the expression in his eyes and sounds. He had a mischievous streak and found great humor in teasing and being teased. He liked watching heavy equipment at work; taking drives with his mom and siblings and his caregivers; going out for ice cream; making sure people tied their shoes and that their legs were not crossed; and picking up leaves and other stuff he found on the ground. He was a people person and loved spending time in the midst of any conversation and any activity.  Brett will be greatly missed by his family, and caregivers. While Brett's life was not simple, he lived simply and simply loved, enriching our lives beyond measure.  Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Brett's life. That's all for today, thank you for listening! For more information on any of these stories visit us at montrosepress.com. And don't forget to check out our sponsor, Elevate Internet. No one should approach entrepreneurship without wisdom and connection from others. This episode I get the wisdom of a local entrepreneur who has been in business for 22 years, and is seen as a staple of our community. Brett teaches us what he’s learned and continues to learn in how to build a sustainable business that positively impacts your community. Brett Hewitt’s life’s journey was changed when a stranger walked up to him and handed him a book to read, Visions for a Black Man by Dr. Na’im Akbar. While Brett was volunteering in a mentorship program, he realized how important it was for us to learn our history and culture and be proud of who we are and later he became a public speaker at local schools, prisons and churches. While traveling to bookstores throughout the United States, Brett couldn’t find literature that pertained to the Black struggle, the large bookstore chains, who had Black literature sections, would put it way back in the back. He thought it was a disservice. Those observations provided the spark for his business, Positive Vibes, which he started in 1992 by selling books from the trunk of his car. In July 1996, he opened his first brick and mortar store in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Through word of mouth, and plenty of community support, he’s proudly celebrating 22 years in business.
