An Oklahoma lawmaker's sneaky proposal would let the state indirectly fund ChristianityOklahoma's state legislators are pushing to amend the state constitution, seeking to remove the word "indirect" from a clause that prevents public funds from supporting private religious institutions. The aim is to channel state funds to religious schools, particularly Christian ones, without direct funding. In 2016, voters rejected a similar effort, and this new push reflects ongoing attempts to bypass the separation of church and state. Opponents of the bill argue that it could result in public funds indirectly supporting churches, including those of potentially less popular or controversial religious groups, which could lead to inequality in public funding. The Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on January 22, 2025https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/an-oklahoma-lawmakers-sneaky-proposal The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.05.1 featuring Phoebe Rose, Helen Greene, and Aaron JensenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
A public school let a Christian illusionist trick kids into attending a religious rally The Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on November 5, 2024 https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/a-public-school-let-a-christian-illusionistIn this segment, the panelists discuss the controversial and manipulative use of magic shows by certain religious groups to attract young people, especially teens, into religious programs. The discussion begins with the analysis of how these illusionists operate, blending entertainment with subtle messaging designed to hook the audience. The shows are presented as fun and harmless, but they mask a deeper agenda of conversion, using the allure of magic tricks to disarm critical thinking and prime the audience for religious indoctrination. The panelists delve into the psychological impact these performances have on impressionable young minds. The illusionist's tactics are carefully constructed to create a sense of wonder and awe, making it easier to introduce spiritual messages that would otherwise be met with skepticism. The show is seen as a "bait-and-switch," where fun and entertainment are used as a cover for more serious religious goals, catching teens off guard before they even realize what's happening.Kelley express concern about the ethical implications of such methods, noting that the line between entertainment and manipulation becomes dangerously thin when the intention is to convert rather than simply entertain. They also explore how these techniques are increasingly used in youth ministry, where the goal isn't just to engage teens but to convert them through emotionally charged experiences that play on their desire for belonging and excitement.Another point raised in the conversation is the long-term effect of such experiences on young people. While it may seem harmless in the moment, the subtle psychological conditioning could lead to lasting impressions, making teens more vulnerable to further religious influence. The panelists emphasize the need for parents and guardians to be aware of these tactics and ensure their children are not being manipulated under the guise of innocent fun.Ultimately, the discussion highlights the complex ethical questions surrounding the use of entertainment as a tool for religious conversion, stressing that while magic shows themselves aren't inherently harmful, when used as a strategy for indoctrination, they cross into dangerous territory. The panelists agree that transparency is key: when entertainment and religion are intertwined, it's crucial that the audience knows what they're truly being sold. Mississippi sheriff's solution to the drug crisis? Everyone must 'truly find Jesus' The Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on September 13, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/mississippi-sheriffs-solution-toChurch Attendance is (Once Again) Correlated with Authoritarianism — So Why Do We Refuse to Acknowledge It?Religion Dispatches by Chrissy Stroop on September 13, 2024https://religiondispatches.org/church-attendance-correlated-with-authoritarianism-again-so-why-do-we-still-refuse-to-acknowledge-it/The sheriff of Monroe County, Mississippi, recently posted two public messages after arresting a man for methamphetamine and weapons possession. He proclaimed that the only solution to the county's drug problem was to find Jesus, raising concerns about mixing religious proselytization with law enforcement duties. His focus on religious salvation over actionable solutions to address the root causes of drug addiction sparked debate. The sheriff's belief that turning to religion, rather than critically addressing systemic issues, could solve the drug crisis highlights a troubling approach in regions saturated with religiosity.Additionally, research has indicated that individuals with higher religiosity often exhibit more authoritarian attitudes and lean toward conservative political figures. This correlation between religiosity and authoritarianism complicates efforts to address public health crises like drug addiction. The articles discussed point out that while religion may provide some individuals with tools to cope with addiction, it often relies on fear and dogma rather than addressing the root causes. In fact, there's evidence that individuals sometimes replace one addiction, such as drugs, with religious fervor, which can be considered a process addiction.Interestingly, some religious recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have reported success. However, studies show that non-religious recovery programs, which share structural similarities to religious ones, are just as effective. These programs focus on social support, group meetings, and creating a sober culture, rather than attributing success to divine intervention. The research suggests that it is not the religious content that makes a difference but the social support networks that these programs foster. In contrast to the religious approach, countries with more secular policies like Switzerland and the Netherlands have successfully used harm reduction programs, including supervised use sites, mental health treatment, and naloxone distribution. These initiatives have significantly reduced drug overdose rates and have been more effective than punitive measures or solely religious approaches. Though the U.S. attempted a decriminalization program in Oregon, the COVID pandemic hindered its full potential, ultimately leading to its repeal in 2022.The conversation highlights the tension between religious ideology and practical, evidence-based solutions to public health crises like drug addiction. While religious organizations offer community and support, focusing exclusively on spiritual salvation can overlook the underlying issues and solutions grounded in health policy and social services. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.39.1 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Scott Dickie and AJBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
Thanks to Humanists, all British Columbia municipalities have ditched prayers at meetings., Friendly Atheist, by Hemant Mehta, on July 5, 2024, https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/thanks-to-humanists-all-british-columbiaIn a significant step forward for humanists and advocates of secular governance, all City Council meetings in British Columbia will now be prayer-free. This development comes nine years after a Supreme Court ruling declared the practice of opening meetings with prayers unconstitutional, as it violated civil rights. Despite the ruling, the British Columbia Humanist Association discovered that 23 municipalities were still starting their meetings with predominantly Christian prayers. In response, the association launched a determined campaign to end this practice. Their efforts included publishing a report identifying non-compliant municipalities, sending letters urging leaders to adhere to the law, and, in some cases, threatening legal action. As a result of these persistent efforts, all municipalities have now agreed to exclude prayers from their meetings and inauguration ceremonies. The decision is seen as a major victory for activists and supporters of secularism, highlighting the importance of holding local leaders accountable to the law. This story was reported by Hemant Mehta on The Friendly Atheist blog, published on July 5, 2024.Panelist Tao expressed great satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the significance of achieving this change through secular means rather than through provocative actions like those of the Satanic Temple. Tao pointed out that the absence of prayer at public meetings ensures that no single religion is given undue prominence, which is a positive step towards inclusivity.Aaron, another panelist, shared Tao's enthusiasm, noting that the decision benefits everyone by putting all citizens on equal footing regardless of their religious beliefs. He highlighted that the practice of opening meetings with Christian prayers implicitly suggested that Christianity was more important than other religions, and ending this practice helps in fostering a more inclusive environment. The discussion also touched on the broader implications of religious diversity in municipal ceremonies. While some argued for representing various religions to reflect cultural diversity, the consensus leaned towards maintaining a secular approach to avoid privileging any particular belief system. The case of Vancouver's 2022 inauguration, which included representatives from different religious backgrounds, was mentioned as an example of an effort to promote inclusivity. The persistence and dedication of the British Columbia Humanist Association were crucial in ensuring compliance with the Supreme Court ruling, demonstrating the power of sustained advocacy and legal pressure. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in upholding secular principles in public governance. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.29.4 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Kara Griffin, Mateo and Aaron JensenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
Texas pastor fined after illegally using church donations to boost his city council campaignFriendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on JULY 11, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/texas-pastor-fined-after-illegallyIn an unprecedented move, a Texas pastor and two churches have been fined by the Texas Ethics Commission for violating state election laws, emphasizing the ongoing importance of the separation between religion and government. The pastor was fined $3,500 for using his church to campaign for an elected office, and the two churches were fined for donating money to his campaign. This action, published by Hemet Mehta on the Friendly Atheist on July 11, 2024, has sparked significant reactions. Many view it as a necessary consequence for blatant violations of long-standing laws intended to prevent the intertwining of political and religious practices. Commentators have expressed surprise and approval, noting that this enforcement in Texas, a state known for its conservative leanings, is a positive sign that laws are still respected. The nominal fine, however, raises questions about its effectiveness as a deterrent. There's a broader concern about the increasing politicization of religious practices in certain communities, and the risks of churches wielding undue influence over political processes. The discussion also touched on the dangerous precedent set by recent Supreme Court decisions that appear to favor historical and traditional values over strict legal precedents, potentially threatening the separation of church and state. Examples include the controversial ruling allowing a coach to lead prayers on a football field and Louisiana's law mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in schools, which are likely to face judicial scrutiny. Critics argue that stronger regulations and enforcement mechanisms are needed to prevent religious organizations from leveraging their influence in politics, suggesting that more substantial fines or punitive damages might serve as more effective deterrents. The debate continues on the best methods to ensure that the wall between church and state remains intact, highlighting the essential role of the electorate in advocating for these boundaries both in government and within their religious communities. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.29.1 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Kara Griffin, Mateo and Aaron JensenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Participants express deep concern over the potential ramifications of such a law, highlighting the risk of abuse and trauma for vulnerable children. There's a discussion about the ethical implications of using religion to justify corporal punishment, with some arguing that it contradicts principles of compassion and respect for human dignity. The discourse touches on broader issues of authoritarianism and the erosion of civil liberties, as well as the role of religion in public policy. Some participants question whether certain interpretations of religious texts can be considered hate speech, particularly when they advocate for violence or discrimination against marginalized groups. There's also skepticism about the effectiveness of corporal punishment as a disciplinary measure, with many pointing to research that suggests it can have long-lasting negative effects on children's mental and emotional well-being. Concern is expressed that legitimizing such practices in schools could lead to an increase in violence and further marginalization of already vulnerable populations.Overall, the conversation reflects a deep sense of alarm and distress over the proposed legislation and its potential impact on children and society as a whole. His suggestion to future brides to unquestionably obey their husbands on their wedding night has drawn widespread criticism for perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes and minimizing female agency. While intended as a joke, Howerton's comments highlight deeper issues within Evangelical culture, including the normalization of patriarchal attitudes and the disregard for women's autonomy. This story, reported by Hemant Mehta in "The Friendly Atheist" on April 3rd, 2024, sparked a conversation about patriarchy and purity culture. The rhetoric perpetuated by Howerton reflects a mindset deeply rooted in patriarchal traditions, where women are expected to submit unquestionably to men. This toxic attitude extends beyond evangelical circles and affects people of all backgrounds, reinforcing harmful gender norms and undermining women's autonomy.Additionally, the conversation touched upon problematic statements made by figures like Jesse Lee Peterson, who has been known to dismiss women's sexual pleasure as unnatural. This further highlights the pervasive nature of patriarchal attitudes and the normalization of sexism within certain communities. The discussion also delved into the importance of comprehensive sex education, emphasizing consent, communication, and mutual pleasure. In contrast to the patriarchal views propagated by Howerton and others, healthy relationships are built on equality, respect, and open dialogue.Ultimately, the incident involving Pastor Howerton serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against patriarchal ideologies and the importance of promoting gender equality and autonomy in all aspects of society. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.16.3 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Infidel64, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

The theatrics reach a high note when a question about school Bibles spotlights Ramaswamy's dance with inconsistency. Protagonist Justin Scott's quest for genuine answers turns the town hall into a political Vaudeville in this Heartland Circus.Infidel criticizes Ramaswamy's refusal to run against his opponent and highlights the candidate's dismissive response to the dangers of Christian nationalism. Ramaswamy's focus on wokeism and transgenderism, in contrast to addressing real threats, is questioned. The irony of a Hindu supporting white Christian nationalism is noted, drawing parallels to the UK's Hindu prime minister supporting the Anglican Church.Phoebe reflects on the peculiar dynamics when non-Christians support Christian establishments. The discussion expands to the importance of accurate storytelling, with politicians often embellishing events. The article prompts contemplation on whether genuine debates are still possible in today's society and the challenges of navigating entrenched positions.Kelley emphasizes the need for atheists to openly engage in public discourse to challenge politicians and build a political force. The discussion reveals the disconnect between politicians' buzzwords and their actions, urging atheists to scrutinize candidates' values. Jimmy criticizes Ramaswamy's disingenuous approach, particularly his attempt to downplay the destructive history of religion. He underlines the importance of not denying history to prevent abuses of liberty. The conversation explores the broader issue of politicians avoiding critical thinking and dismissing challenges from skeptics. The removal of Justin Scott from the town hall exemplifies the reluctance of politicians to face thoughtful questioning. The group underscores the significance of encouraging critical thinking, normalizing atheism, and engaging in meaningful conversations to foster change. In conclusion, the discussion revolves around the challenges atheists face in a political landscape where genuine debate seems elusive. The narrative highlights the need for transparency, critical thinking, and the active participation of atheists in shaping the political discourse.

They discussed the nuances of her shift from atheism. Jonathan sets the stage, framing Hirsi Ali's journey as a departure from her traumatic past with the Muslim Brotherhood.Infidel, skeptical of the conversion, sees it as more of a political move than a spiritual awakening. He criticizes the lack of convincing elements in her narrative and views her alignment with conservative Christians as a strategic choice rooted in fear and the search for like-minded allies. Infidel humorously notes the absence of a "Road to Damascus" moment in her story and quips about waiting for "Damascus plus," adding that God has had 2000 years to make a better entrance.Phoebe expresses disappointment, characterizing the conversion as hollow. She finds it devoid of the spiritual depth one might expect and likens it to a 15th-century conversion in the 21st century. Her critique extends to Hirsi Ali's adoption of terminology like "woke ideology" without celebrating any positive aspect of her newfound faith.Cynthia, citing a potential lack of deep theological exploration in Hirsi Ali's essay, questions whether the conversion stems more from trauma than an authentic spiritual quest. She points out the danger of turning atheism into a new form of dogma and emphasizes the diversity of beliefs among atheists.Jonathan weighs in on the oversimplification in Hirsi Ali's narrative, particularly her comparison of woke ideology to Islamist extremism. He expresses sadness over what he perceives as intellectual dishonesty and a willingness to be used by right-wing organizations for their agenda. The panel collectively addresses the intersection of religion and politics, noting the challenges of separating the two in public discourse. They conclude with a sense of disappointment, viewing Hirsi Ali's conversion as a departure from genuine intellectual exploration and a move towards aligning with a particular political ideology. In summary, the panel's discussion reflects a critical analysis of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's conversion, emphasizing the need for authenticity, spiritual depth, and a careful examination of the intersection between personal beliefs and political affiliations. The tone maintains professionalism while conveying nuanced perspectives.

Initially seeking $3 million dollars within a week, Kunneman later backpedaled, citing divine advice that the purchase wasn't necessary. This abrupt change left many wondering about his true intentions. Some may find this tale amusing, but it's a concerning example of religious grifting, with Kunneman's congregation potentially being taken advantage of for his financial gain.Hank's message seemed to be keep on believing what I say, don't let your eye's and brains deceive you. If it appears I am wrong, god is testing you. Just keep giving! Makes you wonder what he spikes the communion wine with. Why do people accept this kind of thing from religious leaders? Would they accept it from their friends, or siblings, or their employer? How is it that his congregation doesn't figure this out as the scam that it is? Do his followers really think he is anointed by God even after he's been wrong so many times?Does God really care who buys what real estate? Does God care about political and economic borders?God even gives his prophecies with right-wing propaganda baked directly in. Beware those Chinese and their conniving ways, being used by the devil to buy our land. Does God also hate the Chinese like a good part of his right wing followers do?Did god change his mind, or was he just wrong? One thing is for sure, some very desperate and mentally abused people who have obviously suffered some harsh indoctrination or feel like they have no other options, have given a lot of money to a con artist. What kind of real estate deal was SO BAD that even God couldn't fix it? Was there an open gate to Hell on the property or something like that preventing the deal from going through? Just can't imagine what kind of problem there was with the property that even God couldn't fix it. Did it have a bunch of old rusty iron chariots littered all over it? Why couldn't god just help them through their plight instead of using a repeat grifter to collect money, then change his mind on a ground-breaking and imperative real-estate deal? We all know what was wrong with the property, it was more money than Kunneman was unable to raise in time.Hank's connection to god seems a bit faulty. He has spouted all sorts of untrue predictions. Bad election prophesy seems to be his personal forte. Hank's rendition of the Christian god being played by Loki the trickster god is mind-boggling.God routinely changes his mind in Hank world. His god does things just create doubt, then he piles more doubt on top. He wants you to fail. Hank's god is about as decisive as a 3 year-old in a candy store. This is honestly just sad, terribly unfortunate and reflects the worst of us as people - those who become predators target the weak and vulnerable; which is how religion thrives.#prosperitygospel #wakeup #scam #fakepastors #prophet #fakeprophets #china

Denver Archdiocese sues over free pre-K: The state's bigotry ban hurts our bottom line! Friendly Atheist, Hemant Mehta, August 21, 2023 https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/denver-archdiocese-sues-over-free?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=95153&post_id=136192949&isFreemail=true&utm_medium=email The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.35.1 featuring Helen Green, Timothy Bethel, Jimmy Jr. and Raphael RyanColorado recently passed a law offering free preschool to kids, but the Catholic archdiocese isn't on board. They're suing officials claiming their faith should allow them to discriminate against LGBTQ people. This preschool law in Colorado seems like it would be such a good helpful thing on paper, but religious institutions once again show their true colors and insist that if they can't discriminate based on Bronze Age tradition they're the persecuted ones. Not the people they actively try to take rights and freedoms away from.To qualify, schools have to follow a few basic rules, they have to accept kids regardless of their family's race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The Catholic Church wants funding from the state, but they don't want to adapt to the state's rules. They want your money and also wants you to do what they say.In their lawsuit, they claim that being forced to enroll children with gay parents into their schools “is likely to lead to intractable conflicts” , a “Catholic school cannot treat a same-sex couple as a family equivalent to the natural family without compromising its mission and Catholic identity.”Their argument that government is trying to corner the market in preschool is hypocritical. The Catholic church already has done that. The Archdiocese of Denver has 39 preschools, and their prices are so high they're not even listed on the website. They boast about giving nineteen hundred dollars per family through their own tuition assistance programs. The Archdiocese of Colorado has been responsible for 212 sexual abuse cases by 52 different priests. One of whom is actually still active in their church in Colorado Springs.Father William Martinez of the Colorado Springs Archdiocese, is not only an admitted sexual predator, he is actively working at a church that is responsible for 39 preschools. The church settled his case back in 1996 but he was reinstated in 2006.How on Earth are we putting our children in these situations? Why are we giving these people money? Why are we putting children in harm's way? They want to present it as if their religious liberty is at stake, but what they want is simply to make other people's lives worse. This is an admission by the Catholic church that they cannot exist without bigoted policies, plain and simple. Hopefully the judge and the court will laugh at this one.#catholicpreschool #religionispoison #denver #religiousabuse #ExposeChristianSchools #ChurchToo

“Fair Use” This episode we return to reviewing a segment of one of the episodes published by the so called “The Friendly Atheist” podcast on Roe Vs. Wade being overturned which of course is laced throughout with bigotry especially by the female cohost in the form of racism, sexism & anti-Christian sentiments. They try to justify their positions with extremely biased & unfounded speculation which lacks consistency at best. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/conservativeatheist1970/message

When Leah Libresco became a Catholic her story was featured on CNN. Why? Because up to that point she had been an atheist blogger. Her story was soon being shared on Christian and atheist blogs. She talked to atheist blogger Hemant Mehta (aka The Friendly Atheist) about why the moral argument helped her in the journey and he quizzed her over why she chose Catholicism. Hemant Mehta has been a freethought blogger, author, and speaker for nearly 20 years now, building his blog Friendly Atheist into the largest atheist blog in the world. Just as the pandemic began, he came across a YouTube channel called Notes from Autumn. The host was a young woman and recent deconvert with strong criticisms of the way atheists communicate online. "if atheists are not offering a community that meets people's needs," she asks, "and they're only offering this kind of bitter pill, what incentive do people have to join that group?"
In this episode we chat with Hemant Mehta (AKA The Friendly Atheist) Hemant Mehta is the editor of Friendly Atheist, appears on the Atheist Voice channel on YouTube, and co-hosts the uniquely-named Friendly Atheist Podcast. He is a former National Board Certified high school math teacher in the suburbs of Chicago, where he taught for for seven years. He continues to coach their Speech/forensics team. Hemant has appeared on CNN and FOX News Channel, served on the boards for Foundation Beyond Belief (a charity organization targeting non-theistic donors) and the Secular Student Alliance (which creates and supports college atheist groups nationwide). In this special bonus episode, I finally was able to get together with Hemant Mehta, "The Friendly Atheist," for a fascinating discussion about his journey. Hemant became an atheist out of the religion of Jainism, which is fascinating in and of itself--his story is quite different than the sort of "typical" atheist one might encounter who rejects the Christian version of God. As a result of that journey of exploration, Hemant went on to develop the "Friendly Atheist" platform--blogging and podcasting--in an attempt to engage people from all walks of faith, belief systems and life in a respectful and mutually expanding dialogue: common ground, despite massive differences. At a young age, Hemant figured out that something just didn't feel right. He didn't believe what his parents, society, and his peers were telling him was an absolute truth - so like any curious mind - he started digging, reading, and researching until he eventually found some answers. Today Hemant runs the popular website and Youtube channel - "The Friendly Atheist", where he imparts some of his thoughts, debunks myths held in religious circles, and questions religious norms. I had a late-night conversation with Hemant as we sat down to discuss religion, atheism, politics, and more. We discussed the morality and ethics of the bible and the stories it holds sacred. We discussed cults and cult-like behavior vs. religion - and many other interesting facets in today's political sphere. It's important to have an open dialogue about subjects that people don't feel comfortable about, it is really the only way we can analyze the subject, and ourselves, in relation to it. My Take - Using attack words as a method, or forcibly attacking another side for their religious or political ideologies - is a sure-fire way to make people hold their convictions even stronger. What Hemant does masterfully in his videos - is create content that is informative and fun - and that anyone can watch. He leaves others the space to make up their own minds on how they feel. I believe his method of putting out content is a smarter path - if you want to change hearts and minds. I hope you enjoy this episode Hemant Mehta - https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/ Comments, requests or questions, please reach out - my email is roybntz@gmail.com
