The Seattle City Council is cracking down on problematic after hours establishments. WSDOT is implementing speed cameras near work zones. The Tacoma News Tribune has a dumb story about whether or not police departments in Pierce County are ‘diverse’ enough. CBS’s Gayle King played the sexism card when addressing criticism over her space ride. // LongForm: GUEST: Scott St. Clair’s son, a USAF veteran, was taken hostage in Venezuela. He says Sen. Patty Murray is ignoring his pleas for help but is confident in the Trump administration. // Quick Hit: President Trump cut off federal funds to Harvard. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) says he will go down to El Salvador to get Kilmar Abrego Garcia back if he has to.
This is a public episode. In this episode Grahame and Harriet tackle the thorny issue of the role of the permanent establishment in Pillar 2. After a recap as to the use of permanents establishments in domestic and treaty law, and some pointless (and edited out) bickering they draw the conclusion that the Pillar 2 definition of Permanent Establishment deviates somewhat from a pure form and will take some time to settle down. The definition of PE in Pillar 2 is vitally important for helping not only to identify MNEs but also to help with the calculation of the relevant effective tax rates across the globe. of
When goods, services and rights go back and forth within a company, how do you attribute profit or loss to one part of the company versus another? Former OECD head of tax treaties and transfer pricing Mary Bennett and EY's Mike McDonald join this episode of “GILTI Conscience” for a detailed discussion on the attribution of profits to permanent establishments. Skadden tax partners David Farhat and Nate Carden and associate Stefane Victor host the discussion, which explores, among other topics, critical differences between Articles 7 and 9 of the OECD Model Tax Convention and why these distinctions matter for multinational businesses.

Denn: Was in Österreich ablief, könnte sich in Berlin wiederholen. Wählervotum hin oder her.

(Aloka Earth Room & Parayana Vihara) Reflection of the 7 Factors of Awakening and the 4 Establishments of Mindfulness
I took this recording on 29 March 2024, Good Friday, Holy Week when is God is dead. I walked around the roundabout of Pio del Pilar barangay hall, which is close to where I currently live. Barangay is the smallest local government unit in the Philippines and came from the pre-colonial word balangay which were traditional boats in the Philippines. When I was growing up in a small town, a former fishing village outside Metro Manila, Good Friday means that we are not allowed to take showers despite the tropical heat and humidity. Establishments are closed. Children should not be unruly, and generally, everyone should stay at home because there is no God watching over. Crucified, he is suffering in pain on this day. The sound recorded here is supposed to be a quieter 8:30 evening than usual. The laundromat, the karinderya, and the sari-sari store are all closed. You will hear dogs barking, supposedly domesticated. There is a sound that appears like birds chirping, but I am unsure about this because they could be shrieks of a mouse or something else. There are several voices: a man saying “perfect”, two kids trying to ride a bicycle, a random passerby. You can also hear the rumble of the motorbikes, the quieter hissing of some cars, the build-up of a roar from a mid-sized fire truck, a honk from a teen-age boy driving, and possibly my footsteps and television noises from a random house. I returned to the Philippines late last year after over three years of living outside the country. I lived for two years in one of the richest countries in the word, and for one year in one of the poorest, classified by the UN as a least developed country (LDC). In three years, I moved in and out of nine apartments for various reasons, lived in four cities for at least a month: Geneva, Zurich, Vientiane, and Bangkok, I got stuck in a city because of Covid-19 policies, went home in January 2022 only to leave again in less than a month without fully unpacking my belonging and my reflections. Living close to this roundabout was not well thought of and I want to leave. Yet, I am unable to move, stuck here in this random destination with no family or friends nearby, and with no specific purpose. Sometimes I fail to remember what I did where and why. I think I am moving too quickly, unprepared for what I am trying to do. Am I really getting good at anything other packing and unpacking, throwing or selling secondhand items, trying to fit all my belongings in one big luggage? I used to think that airports are transitory spaces, but not anymore. Not when I remember how I got stuck in Istanbul airport trying to entertain myself with baklava and not when you count the hours I spent stuck in NAIA. Virginia Woolf said I am rooted but I flow – and this might be out of context, but I want to borrow it because what I felt and what I still feel is a constant floating and flowing, a state of trying to remain and at the same time move elsewhere. This is your host Ting Ting from Las Vegas. Today we have a young and inspiring guest whose name is Sof Petros. I got to know her a little last summer when I taught an SPI course for the Climbers of Color. She was the assistant Rock Director of the organization and helped me with many tasks. She was thorough, an excellent communicator and her emails were always filled with loads of positive energy and humor.Sof is an AMGA SPI and a PSIA AASI Certified Alpine Ski instructor. She does rock guiding with Climbers of Color in Washington, Out in the Wild in Oregon, and Flash Foxy in California and teaches skiing in Stevens Pass Washington. She does admirable work in affinity space providing safe and supportive learning environments. To quote her words, she is “amped to join and lead affinity programming that not only brings communities together, but also challenges and questions systems and values of supremacy, domination, and oppression that manifest in climbing spaces, even ‘diverse ones.'”In this episode, she recalled that her family always liked to play outside. Even though the activities they chose were not “technical recreation,” the sense of connection to nature and the land was very impactful. We of course talked much about affinity programs. Sof shared valuable insights on how we could make the environment more inclusive, which would also help guides manage risks and provide better student experience.Beyond climbing and skiing, Sof can be found baking lots of bread, crying over just about every dog she sees, making jewelry, taking outdoor naps, eating really good pickles and hot sauces, and trying to make craft cocktails on her truck tailgate. Despite challenges, unanimous approval signals changing public sentiment. South Korea has recently marked a significant moment in its cultural landscape as the parliament approved a groundbreaking law prohibiting the production and sale of dog meat. This landmark legislation, slated to be enforced by 2027, aims to bring an end to the age-old practice of consuming dog meat, commonly known as "boshintang." While the consumption of dog meat itself will not be deemed illegal, this move reflects the changing attitudes toward this tradition, with only 8% of people having tried dog meat in the past year, according to a recent Gallup poll. The new law primarily targets the dog meat trade, imposing strict penalties on those involved. Individuals convicted of butchering dogs may face up to three years in prison, while those found guilty of raising or selling dogs for meat could serve a maximum of two years. The legislation provides a three-year grace period for farmers and restaurant owners to transition to alternative sources of employment before the ban takes effect. With approximately 1,600 dog meat restaurants and 1,150 dog farms in 2023, these establishments must submit plans to phase out their businesses to local authorities. Support for the ban stems from a changing cultural landscape, where dogs are increasingly seen as family members rather than sources of food. Animal rights activists applaud the government's commitment to ending the dog meat trade, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rights of animals. However, opinions on the ban remain divided, particularly among older generations who view dog meat as a traditional delicacy. The generational gap is evident, as younger South Koreans, like 22-year-old student Lee Chae-yeon, advocate for the ban to promote animal rights and acknowledge the evolving role of pets in society. This historic decision has not come without challenges. Dog farmers and restaurant owners, many of whom are elderly, express concerns about losing their livelihoods. The government has promised support, but the details of compensation are still being worked out. The ban's passage in parliament received unanimous approval, signaling a shift in public sentiment toward the humane treatment of animals. As South Korea navigates this cultural shift, it joins the global movement towards recognizing the rights of animals and fostering a more compassionate society. Parliament (par-li-a-ment): South Korea has recently marked a significant moment in its cultural landscape as the parliament approved a groundbreaking law prohibiting the production and sale of dog meat.Establishments (es-tab-lish-ments): With approximately 1,600 dog meat restaurant and 1,150 dog farms in 2023, these establishments must submit plans to phase out their businesses to local authorities.Generational (gen-er-a-tion-al): The generational gap is evident, as younger South Koreans advocate for the ban to promote animal rights.Unanimous (U-nan-i-mous): The ban's passage in parliament received unanimous approval, signaling a shift in public sentiment toward the humane treatment of animals.Compassionate (com-pas-sion-ate): As South Korea navigates this cultural shift, it joins the global movement towards recognizing the rights of animals and fostering a more compassionate society.
