In this episode, we meet Cho, in a story crafted by Michael Boquet. This story was inspired by the prompt: “Write about someone whose job is to help people leave their old lives behind.”  Michael Boquet (pronouns he/him) is a freelance writer who specializes in reviewing pop culture and entertainment. He currently writes for Centerfield of Gravity and Graphic Policy, under the nom de plume Joe Bones. He's also held positions as a content creator for non-profits, most notably community theatres. A long-time fan of DC Comics, he has recently expanded his comic book reading to include titles by many different independent publishers. Joe is an active bibliophile who loves to read books by diverse authors. His favorite genre is horror, but he reads a decent amount of Sci-Fi, and some fantasy. He isn't into non-fiction or most biographies but does enjoy a good memoir. In his spare time, he enjoys playing harmonica, watching mindless television, and engaging in social activism. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about the history of the business of Marvel Comics! Today we’re interviewing author Sean Howe, author of Marvel Comics the Untold Story. “In the early 1960s, Marvel Comics introduced a series of bright-costumed superhero characters—including Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and the Amazing Spider-Man—that would evolve into a modern American mythology for millions of readers. Over the last half-century, these characters have been passed along among generations of brilliant editors, artists, and writers who struggled with commercial mandates, a fickle audience, and, over matters of credit and control, one another. Written by Sean Howe, former comic book reviewer and editor at Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Comics: The Untold Story is a gripping narrative of one of the most extraordinary, beloved, and beleaguered pop cultural entities in America’s history.”   Guest hosting is: Steven Attewell writes about the intersection of history, politics, and pop culture in The People’s History of the Marvel Universe for Graphic Policy. While Brett is off covering San Diego Comic Con, Elana's doing the next best thing: podcasting with two academics!  Returning guests Steven Attewell and Sarah Rasher join her to talk SDCC news, Marvel Comics, the Eisner winning Lumberjanes and popular indie books like Rat Queens and the new Arclight.  Sarah Rasher blogs about religion and politics for Friendly Atheist, recaps Teen Wolf for The Rainbow Hub, and writes comics reviews for Graphic Policy. In her own blog, Sarah Explains the Finer Sports, she talks about figure skating and football from a queer feminist geek perspective. Sarah earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Connecticut and is now working on a book on Shakespeare in popular culture and building an iambic pentameter ray in her secret lair. Steve Attewell is a political & union activist. Steve got his PhD in Policy History from the University of California, Santa Barbara and teaches public policy at CUNY's Murphy Institute for Labor Studies. He is the founder and writer of Race for the Iron Throne as well as The Realignment Project. Elana is here every week. This week she will be playing the role of Brett.

Graphic Policy Radio returns this Monday! This is the show that mixes comics and politics, and this episode we lift the curtain to show off the scenes behind political activism. This past week controversy struck the comic industry (again) over the transphobic nature in part of the comic series Airboy. Graphic Policy, along with The Rainbow Hub, spearheaded the movement to decry the comic, and pull support of the comic by Image Comics, timed to coincide with Image Expo. You can read more about the issue here, and the action here. But why did we go this route? We talk about the issue, and dive into political activism including why this particular "ask" was made, and the timing of it all. But, that's not all! We're also going to talk about comics we recommend, that you should be checking out! So, learn a bit about political activism and organizing as we apply it to the comic industry.

Graphic Policy is back with a brand new episode with special guest, and award winning journalist Spencer Ackerman. Comics have often featured torture as a method for the heroes to extract information or get them to their goal. We most recently saw this in Marvel and Netflix's Daredevil, where torture is a key point in advancing the hero's plot. We'll discuss torture in comics, and its place in the modern stories and the world. Spencer Ackerman is the U.S. national security editor of the Guardian, where he was part of the team that won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Journalism for the NSA surveillance revelations provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. A former senior writer for Wired, Ackerman won the 2012 National Magazine Award for Digital Reporting for his series about Islamophobia in FBI counterterrorism training. Having reported from Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay and numerous ships, bases and a submarine, Ackerman in 2015 exposed a secretive incommunicado police detention center in Chicago called Homan Square. A Brooklyn NY native, his mother taught him to read with Bill Mantlo's Incredible Hulk run. We want to hear your thoughts on the topic. You can Tweet them to us at @graphicpolicy or call in live.
