Zack Snyder's Watchmen is one of the most controversial superhero films ever made, and in light of how much we're enjoying Daimon Lindelof's Watchmen TV series on HBO, this episode we decided to look back at Snyder's adaptation. Perry goes in-depth into the ways Snyder misunderstood Moore and Gibbons' classic, while Derrick offers a more sympathetic view of the film. Where do you stand?

Titus & Peter Paik discuss Alan Moore's comics, which have made for a number of movie adaptations, few of which are successes. Zack Snyder's Watchmen is good. HBO is now making a series which looks terrible. The Wachawski's V for Vendetta was rather bad, as also From Hell. We try to explain why with reference to two themes that recur in Moore's stories--radical political change & the power of suffering to make for greatness, both ideas simply to be rejected in an End-of-History version of liberal politics. We also discuss Miracleman for one of Moore's depictions of such a realized End of History.

Is the film adaption too faithful to the original? Is it too indulgent in its own violence? Yes. But hear us talk at length about the factors that hold Watchmen back.

Huge ep! Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN (2009) is a significant comic book adaptation because Alan Moore's original graphic novel was so significant to the history of comic books. Once called un-adaptable, WATCHMEN manages to not be a complete disaster, but is still far from a great movie. It also contains perhaps the worst sex scene of all time, which we almost avoid discussing but alas the boys bring it up. Follow us on Twitter @tcapod, Facebook and support us on iTunes.

Watchmen is a graphic novel by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. It was serialized as a limited series by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987, and collected in 1987. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced Moore to create original characters instead. A commercial success, Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics and mainstream press, and is frequently considered by several critics and reviewers as comics' greatest series and graphic novel. After a number of attempts to adapt the series into a feature film, director Zack Snyder's Watchmen was released in 2009. A video game series, Watchmen: The End is Nigh, was released in the same year to coincide with the film's release. In 2012, DC Comics began publishing Before Watchmen, a comic book series acting as a prequel to the original Watchmen series, without Moore and Gibbons' involvement.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/support
