What is an extinction event? How have human beings considered extinction in the past? How is the contemporary understanding of human extinction different to the ancient world? And why is it that tech billionaires are so obsessed with it to the extent that they're making the decisions that are more likely to hasten its arrival?Philosopher of extinction, Émile Torres, has dedicated their life to answering these questions. A former advocate of long-termism, Émile is now one of the most outspoken critics of the dangerous ideologies driving development in Silicon Valley, warning against a vision of utopia which will decimate the planet and upend democratic ideals. In this wide-ranging discussion which pulls much from Émile's latest book, Human Extinction: A History of the Science and Ethics of Annihilation, we delve into the minds of people like Musk and Bezos through a historical lens, examining how it is that extinction anxiety is driving the most powerful to make dangerous decisions. Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis. Join subscribers from 186 countries to support independent journalism. My Heart Is On Fire by Doug Apple - a short Christian devotional to open the Scriptures and make your heart burn within you!

You can read the whole text here: https://dougapple.blogspot.com/ +++++++ I'm Doug Apple...and my heart is on fire. (Luke 24:32) Psalm 145:18 says, “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him…” Well…I'M calling upon Him! Are you? I am calling upon the Lord every day and this is great news! When I call upon Him, He is near to me. I want the Lord to ALWAYS be near to me because I need Him. I need His presence, His love, His light, His direction, His guidance. I want Him to lead me, to teach me, to mentor me. I want to hear Him say, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” I want Him near to me for more reasons than I can count, so with this in mind, I call upon Him, almost continuously. Looking back at Psalm 145:18, I didn't give you the whole verse. Here is what the whole things says, “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth.” So that's an extra layer, “in truth.” What does it mean to call upon the Lord “in truth”? Well…just be honest. Come to Him as you are. Tell Him all the truth. Don't try to hide anything, and certainly don't try to control your image when talking to God. This is calling upon Him in truth. It also means having true ideas about God. Often, we want to fashion God in our image, but if we want to call upon Him in truth, we have to have true thoughts about Him. He is the King. He is the Creator. He is Father God. He is the Lord of all. He is just and holy and righteous. He is also merciful and loving and kind. So, to call upon the Lord in truth, we have to have clear, true ideas about who we are, and about who He is. And the good news is, in spite of the giant gulf between us and Him, He invites us to call upon Him, and He says that when we do, He will be near to us. James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Hebrews 11:6 says that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Psalm 63:1 says, “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land…” Psalm 42 says as the deer pants for the water so my soul longs after Thee. That's me. Yes, as one of God's redeemed, His Holy Spirit lives inside of me. I don't need to cry out to heaven to get Him to come down. He is already here. He is already as near as He can be. The problem is me. As the old song says, “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it.” So, when I call upon the Lord, I'm wanting to connect more closely with Him. I want to fully live out what He has already promised, which is Him abiding in me, and me abiding in Him. I do that by daily calling upon the Lord, and I'm so glad for this promise in Psalm 145:18, “The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth.” May God bless you today. I'm Doug Apple.

Sorry, you can only get drugs when there's a drug shortage. Three GLP-1 drugs are approved for weight loss in the United States: Semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Rybelsus®) Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) Liraglutide (Victoza®, Saxenda®) …but liraglutide is noticeably worse than the others, and most people prefer either semaglutide or tirzepatide. These cost about $1000/month and are rarely covered by insurance, putting them out of reach for most Americans. …if you buy them from the pharma companies, like a chump. For the past three years, there's been a shortage of these drugs. FDA regulations say that during a shortage, it's semi-legal for compounding pharmacies to provide medications without getting the patent-holders' permission. In practice, that means they get cheap peptides from China, do some minimal safety testing in house, and sell them online. So for the past three years, telehealth startups working with compounding pharmacies have sold these drugs for about $200/month. Over two million Americans have made use of this loophole to get weight loss drugs for cheap. But there was always a looming question - what happens when the shortage ends? Many people have to stay on GLP-1 drugs permanently, or else they risk regaining their lost weight. But many can't afford $1000/month. What happens to them? Now we'll find out. At the end of last year, the FDA declared the shortage over. The compounding pharmacies appealed the decision, but last month the FDA confirmed its decision was final. As of March 19 (for tirzepatide) and April 22 (for semaglutide), compounding pharmacies will no longer be able to sell cheap GLP-1 drugs. Let's take a second to think of the real victims here: telehealth company stockholders. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/the-ozempocalypse-is-nigh

In this episode, Matt and Chris tackle the big ideas—or at least the ones rattling around in Peter Thiel's mind. Tech billionaire, venture capitalist, and political kingmaker, Thiel has long been a looming figure in Silicon Valley, known for his deep pockets, contrarian takes, and peculiar philosophical musings. But beneath the surface-level libertarian posturing, what does Thiel actually believe? And does it hold up to scrutiny? The decoders dig into Thiel's recent interview on Uncommon Knowledge, where he waxes biblical about end times, interprets the katechon with all the confidence of a medieval theologian, and seamlessly blends venture capitalism with prophecies of the Antichrist.Along the way, they explore Thiel's method of connecting historical dots with pure vibes, and his Jetsons Fallacy, the deep disappointment that the world looks more like The Office than a 1960s vision of the future. They dissect the Sensemaker Aristocracy surrounding him—with its reverent back-patting and strange mix of deference and obfuscation that turns tech moguls into prophets. They also highlight Thiel's bizarre leaps in logic, from citing biblical prophecies to warning about one-world free-trade Communist government conspiracies and his confusing stance on technological progress—simultaneously lamenting stagnation while fearing we're racing too fast toward Armageddon.Of course, no billionaire worldview would be complete without some COVID conspiracies, and Thiel delivers, crafting an elaborate Fauci Bioweapon Paradox in which the pandemic response was simultaneously overblown and also secretly justified because the virus was (obviously) engineered. So is Peter Thiel a visionary? A libertarian Cassandra? Or just a very wealthy man with a lot of half-formed ideas and a habit of mumbling them into microphones? Matt and Chris wade through the mess so you don't have to. Stay till the end for the Revolutionary Leprechaun Theory of Western Civilization… if you dare.LinksHoover Institute: Apocalypse Now? Thousands of Brits will be attending Christmas and carol services throughout December. Yet festive attendance masks the reality that church congregations just aren't holding up. The most optimistic of estimates suggest that regular church attendance has almost halved in the UK since 2009. This is just one of the factors that has led the historian and writer A.N. Wilson, in the Christmas edition of The Spectator this week, to declare that the end of Christendom is nigh. On this episode of Holy Smoke, A.N. Wilson joins Damian Thompson to discuss his thesis. Like Platonism, is Christianity doomed to become extinct in practice? When was the last time England was truly, and fervently, religious? And are innovations such as female priests a symptom – or a cause – of the Church's decline? You can read more from A.N. Wilson on his Substack. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.
