A Theme with Energy But No Clarity on Genre The episode opens with "Dancer Who," a drum and bass remix of the Doctor Who theme from an account called "Synth Theme Remixes." Despite nearly 13 years of existence and modest viewership, the track has undeniable energy and a strong beat. Whether it's actually pure drum and bass is debatable—there are keyboards and synthesizers involved—but it's undeniably danceable. Tegan is improving as an actress, but only incrementally. Turlough raises the fundamental question: why is this character here at all? Even more surprising—by the time we're done, Adric starts looking better in retrospect. When you find yourself comparing a companion favorably to someone much-maligned by fandom, you know the roster has an issue. A Creature Department with Nothing to Do The hosts confront an uncomfortable truth about Season 20: it's remarkably free of monsters and creatures. The Mara is a villain, not a creature. The Garm exists but barely registers. The Eternals are villains. Kings Demons has... nothing. This absence reflects a deliberate editorial choice to ground the show under Peter Davison's influence—away from the wacky alien designs, toward something more naturalistic. The creature department was apparently just sitting around with nothing to build. When Best Villain and Best Guest Star Diverge in Unexpected Ways One host makes a surprising villain choice. Another champions a campy, over-the-top performance that might seem like it belongs in a different era of Doctor Who entirely. The Brigadier's return gets unanimous agreement as best guest star, but his performance in a particular story involves playing not one, but two versions of himself—a challenge that pays dividends. Meanwhile, the Black Guardian lingers as a presence but never quite rises to the occasion, despite excellent work from the actor. Two Different Takes on the Same Brigadier Moment Both hosts select best moments from the same story, but they pick different scenes. One focuses on the emotional weight of two versions of the same character finally meeting and reaching out. The other selects a memory-based sequence—a storytelling device that works beautifully here but one the hosts caution against overusing. It will show up again and again in New Who, and there's apparently a real tearjerker in the Sarah Jane Adventures that hits hard. But how many times can you deploy the same emotional tool before it loses power? The Easiest and Hardest Superlatives Best and worst episodes sort themselves out quickly—there's immediate consensus on what works best and what's interminable. But best monster becomes genuinely difficult when you realize the season doesn't have traditional creatures to choose from. Best companion is solved "by default." And best moment splinters into two thoughtful but different answers. Comics: A Fishing Trip That Becomes a Moral Quandary "Lunar Lagoon" (DWM 76–77, April–May 1983) finds the Doctor landing on a Pacific island during World War II, not realizing what era he's actually in. A lone Japanese soldier still believes the war is ongoing. When an American pilot is shot down, the Doctor removes the bullets from the soldier's gun—but this act of mercy sets off a chain of events that results in the soldier's death and leaves the Doctor consumed with guilt. The hosts note that while this is a hoary old cliche (the Japanese soldier who doesn't know the war is over), the Doctor's presence should have reframed it. Instead, critical details remain unclear—what year did the Doctor think he was in? Why was there suddenly an American WWII plane? The story needs another line or two of dialogue to ground what's happening. Additionally, the complete absence of a companion (despite Nyssa, Tegan, and Turlough all being available) makes the story feel oddly hollow. The Doctor carries everything through thought balloons and internal monologue, which limits the interplay a good Doctor Who story thrives on. Memory TARDIS: A Landing That Nobody Expected "The Mind Robber" (Troughton, five-part story) sends the hosts into a discussion about a tale so weird, so far from grounded Doctor Who, that it might be impossible to imagine in Davison's era. The Land of Fiction, a rogue character masquerading as "the Master," Jamie's face literally rearranged due to actor illness, and a famous shot nobody will forget—this is 1968 Doctor Who at its most experimental. It's 5000 BC in Mesopotamia and a crazy sea monster eats this kid's dad. Suddenly, this superhero flies in and takes that monster down. We see the other heroes take down other monsters. We got a group of 10 superheroes on our hands. They stand in V formation and wait for the people to thank them. One of the heroes leans down and hands a kid a knife. Here's who we have: Ikaris: basically Superman Sersi: can like mess with matter Thena: creates a weapon out of pure cosmic energy Kingo: laser fingers Phastos: creates advanced weapons and technology Makkari: basically the Flash Druig: mind control Gilgamesh: Hulk but not green Sprite: can change the appearance of things and appears as a child Ajak: the spiritual leader and healer who serves as the primary communicator with their Celestial creator Cut to present day and that knife is in a museum as an artifact that shaped history. The Eternals are still alive, cuz they're eternal. Sersi and Sprite live together in London. Ikaris left her without explanation centuries earlier. She's moved on and is now in a relationship with human Dane. When the trio is attacked by a monster like in the beginning. They're called Deviants. Ikaris arrives just in time to save the day. The Eternals were under the assumption there were no more Deviants. Which is why the Eternals haven't been in action for the past 500 years. We see a flashback of when Sersi and Ikaris got together…and I mean got together. #NotMyMarvel. They end up getting married. Back in the present, the 3 Eternals make it to South Dakota expecting to meet up with Ajak, only to find her dead. So it's time to get the band back together to figure out what to do next. Sersi is the new leader and meets with Arishem - the Celestial that sent the Eternals to Earth. Sersi learns that the Eternals' mission was actually to prepare Earth for the Emergence of a new Celestial. See, for millions of years, he has been planting Celestial seeds inside planets where the energy from large populations allows new Celestials to be born. The Deviants were sent to destroy the apex predators of each planet to ensure the development of intelligent life, but the Deviants evolved and started eating said intelligent life. So he created the Eternals to fight them. Now that the population of humans has reached the necessary size to allow the new Celestial to be born, Earth will be no more. Sersi doesn't love this and tells everyone else. Everyone is down to stop the plan. Everyone except for Ikaris. We find out that Ajak wanted to stop the Emergence and save humanity, so he led her to the Deviants and allowed them to kill her. Sprite joins Ikaris cuz she's in love with Ikaris while Kingo chooses to leave, agreeing with Ikaris but not wanting to hurt his friends. The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July.HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies. Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival. Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel's general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement.Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner.A final look trailer for Prime's Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.

Remember the Black Knight from the movie Eternals (2021)? The Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends episode "Knights and Demons" actually does a better job introducing this character. Prior to the events of this episode, the Black Knight banished Modred (not to be confused with Mordred) to the Land of Shades, so Modred sends an enchanted gargoyle statue to Earth to steal the Black Knight's magic sword from a museum at the Spider-Friends' college. The gargoyle and the Black Knight both show up to fight over the sword in the NYC streets (and skies), so the Spider-Friends get involved, but they sure aren't helpful. The entire rest of the episode plays out like a Dungeons & Dragons game in which the Black Knight has surprisingly few points allocated to dexterity. Although, actually, it's not a Dungeons & Dragons game, because in this show, that game is called Sorcery & Serpents. Also, Peter and Bobby and Angelica are all members of the SCA, and we aren't even kidding about that bit.
