X-Men (2000) - Ep. 396 Mutants, magnetism, and black leather superhero suits - this week the Normies travel back to the year 2000 to revisit X‑Men, the film that launched a new era of blockbuster superhero cinema. From Hugh Jackman's star-making turn as Wolverine to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen's legendary rivalry, the hosts break down the movie's legacy, its surprising influence on everything that followed, and whether the first cinematic mutant team-up still holds up over two decades later. So pop those claws, cue up the Cerebro helmet, and join the Normies as they ask the age-old question: what happens to a toad when it gets struck by lightning? This is a fixed version that should not cut off.  Oh no, it looks like Jeff and Rick have been locked in a closet and now have to talk about a selection of scenes from other comic books. They must have run out of money for their show, or lost a bet. One of the two. It does not matter. They are middle aged and can use the time to sleep or talk or do whatever it is that you do during a clip show. To start off, I love Kurt Wagner. Nightcrawler is easily one of my favorite Marvel Comic characters. His design is fantastic. The color scheme of his OG costume, the tail, his overall look. Chief's kiss. And his characterization is wonderful. A German Errol Flynn, with charm, wit and pathos. Being a fan of the Chris Claremont run of the X-Men, and beginning my collection just before the Fall of the Mutants, I was there for the creation of Excalibur, and seeing Kurt as a leader, and the soul of a team. Reading back through his development was a treat. I alway loved any spotlight he received. I hunted down his original mini-series, and I looked for other appearances with him. I always appreciated the deep friendship they had, even though they were opposites. I like to read their history as Kurt being a center for Logan. Of course, reading back into the history of the X-Men, you get the Mutant Massacre and one of the first times your see some serious consequences placed on the team. Kurt and Kitty's injuries pull them out of the X-Men and into Excalibur. This is a center piece story for all hardcore X-Men fans. I guess I can wax Nightcrawlers car all day long. He is a great character, a great design, a great history, and just overall great. I like that he is usually not overused either. Some of his stories have been really bad, but I blame the writer, not the character for those errors. Oh, Wolverine died and Kurt is sad. OK, let's see what new madness next issue brings us.   Check out our clip show at our website:  https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2026/05/11/nightcrawler-v4-7-death-of-wolverine/   We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. The 90's were a bad decade for Marvel's Mutants, and it took some seismic changes and bold creative risks to save the franchise, the biggest being the 2001 reboot of the franchise - Ultimate X-Men! Marvel Comics hit the reset button and created a brand new imagining of Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the rest of the X-Men's huge cast of characters. Mark Millar and Andy Kubert re-imagined Marvel's mutants and positioned them in the middle of a world in the shadow of the 9/11 attacks and waging a war that violated a lot of personal rights. Social and political satire wrapped up in a sci-fi package! Every month on Patreon we take a special deep-dive into a Marvel comic book, event, or timeline to examine all the highs and lows of the Marvel Universe. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

Rat Scabies needs little introduction as the thunderous drummer of The Damned. His collaborator in One Thousand Motels, Chris Constantinou, has had a career that has taken him from the studio with Chas Chandler, to the Live Aid stage at Wembley with Adam Ant, and into the recording booth with Sinéad O’Connor. Rat and Chris describe how they first met through The Mutants, a collaborative project that assembled an unlikely roll-call of rock veterans including Wilco Johnson, Wayne Kramer and Norman Watt-Roy. That project proved too unwieldy to tour so they stripped it back, formed a two-man core, and called it One Thousand Motels. The result was 2% Out of Sync, an album that has taken almost six years to find its way onto vinyl, and into listeners’ hands. This Week in Horror History (Mar 23–29) is your weekly horror release-date rundown—with where to watch (U.S.), a deep-cut spotlight, and a weekly recommendation built for nights when you want your horror mean, chaotic, and just a little contaminated. This week we've got desert-mutant survival horror, a killer video game movie with pure mid-2000s cursed-object energy, a found-footage livestream nightmare that spirals beautifully out of control, and one extremely angry flock proving that pastoral scenery is no protection from body-count madness.Inside this episode✅ Horror releases from Mar 23–29Mar 23, 2007 — The Hills Have Eyes 2A brutal remake-era sequel that swaps the family-road-trip setup for National Guard trainees, abandoned bunkers, and irradiated desert terror. Mean, grimy, and built to make survival feel filthy.Where to watch: Rent or buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.Mar 24, 2006 — Stay AliveOne of the most aggressively 2000s horror premises ever made: what if the video game kills you for real? Welcome to an emergency BONUS episode of Revolutions Per Movie! Last week, while I was talking to Jackie and Jill from Target Video, they mentioned the doc We Were There To Be There, which focuses on Target filming The Cramps & The Mutants playing a show at Napa State, a psychiatric hospital in Northern California. So today, here is my conversation with Jason Willis & Mike Plante, who directed We Were There To Be There!!!We discuss how we each discovered Target Video VHS tapes and how it made us feel we weren't alone in our weirdness, the Flipside Video series, how goofy Black Flag was in their videos with Target, Repo Man, fanzines, Greg Turkington (Neil Hamburger) in the crowd of a Target Video shoot for the Meat Puppets, how the film changed its focus during the research phase, tracking down Target Video head Joe Rees in the wilderness, the legal and ethical concerns that arise while making a documentary, the surprising conservatism of San Francisco in this era, the doc's explanation of how The Cramps ended up playing Napa State and the history of the hospital, how Reagan destroyed the inner works of Napa State, the NEA, the footage of The Mutants playing The School For The Deaf, Flipper, Desolation Center, the importance of LSD in the early days of the punk music scene, how the lines between the audience and the bands performing at Napa State were completely shattered, Bryan Gregory's performance, the lost Mutants footage discovered after 40 years and where they found it, The Punk Media Research Collection Archive, Scopitones, Eerie publications, straight edge punk and so much more!Watch WE WERE THERE TO BE THERE:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwwRQVgW-0gBLU-RAY with additional Mutants doc and Napa State performance:https://grasshopperfilm.myshopify.com/collections/new-releases/products/the-cramps-and-the-mutants-the-napa-state-tapes-blu-rayREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Frank is joined by Joe, aka "Muscles of the Multiverse," to talk Marvel storytelling from the comics page to the MCU screen, then go all-in on Disney+'s Wonder Man after its eight-episode drop. Joe breaks down what he does on YouTube, why he started the Reading the Multiverse podcast, and how he approaches Marvel adaptation trends without expecting (or wanting) a 1-to-1 translation. From there, the episode shifts into a full Wonder Man discussion: why the show works as a character-first story, how it balances comedy with real stakes, and why the Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery dynamic ended up being the surprise engine of the season. The conversation also gets into Simon's anxiety and identity pressure, the Department of Damage Control angle, the "Doorman" detour episode, and what all of this might be setting up for mutants and the next big MCU era. Timestamps and Topics (major beats) 00:00 Intro and guest welcome: Joe "Muscles of the Multiverse" 00:30 Joe's content approach: MCU-to-comics explainers + Reading the Multiverse podcast 02:15 Quick MCU news: Ian McKellen "destroyed New Jersey" comment and what it could imply 05:10 Wonder Man first reactions: why it's landing better than expected 06:40 Character-driven Marvel: Simon's relatability, anxiety, and hiding "who you are" in Hollywood 09:00 Acting as the hook: standout performances, "meta" acting scenes, and why Trevor works now 18:10 Wonder Man powers explained: ionic energy basics and how the MCU might simplify the lore 20:10 Bigger MCU threads: Vision/Wanda possibilities, mutant framing, and Damage Control as a warning sign 30:45 Episode balance talk: comedy vs drama, and why the Doorman episode hits so hard 41:00 What's next for Simon: hero-by-proxy theory, team potential, and final scores 44:40 Disney+ marketing debate: why some shows feel under-pushed and what Marvel can fix 50:35 Recommendations: The Ultimates (Deniz Camp) and revisiting Schitt's Creek 53:10 Joe's upcoming work: Doctor Doom deep cuts, Fantastic Four read-through, and the editing grind Key Takeaways Wonder Man works because it treats Simon Williams like a person first, superhero second. The show's comedy lands because the stakes stay real in the background, especially with Damage Control looming. Trevor Slattery is fully recontextualized here: still funny, but also weirdly wise and essential to Simon's growth. The Doorman episode is a standout swing that doubles as a Hollywood critique and a superhero fatigue commentary. Joe's breakdown of Simon's ionic-energy comic history highlights why Marvel rarely does strict comic-to-screen adaptation. Damage Control and the "quota" vibe point toward a wider MCU theme: institutional fear of powered people. Mutant groundwork is starting to feel less like a sudden switch and more like a slow social shift in-world. Both hosts land at a 9/10, with the only "missing point" being more about feel than a specific flaw. Memorable Quotes "There's usually never a 1 to 1 adaptation." "I didn't know that I needed more Trevor Slattery in my life. But now I do." "Mephisto is not going to be in everything." "It felt like it was made to be for an episodic TV show." "You can't help but root for Simon." Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the next review and interview.
