Frank is joined by Joe, aka "Muscles of the Multiverse," to talk Marvel storytelling from the comics page to the MCU screen, then go all-in on Disney+'s Wonder Man after its eight-episode drop. Joe breaks down what he does on YouTube, why he started the Reading the Multiverse podcast, and how he approaches Marvel adaptation trends without expecting (or wanting) a 1-to-1 translation. From there, the episode shifts into a full Wonder Man discussion: why the show works as a character-first story, how it balances comedy with real stakes, and why the Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery dynamic ended up being the surprise engine of the season. The conversation also gets into Simon's anxiety and identity pressure, the Department of Damage Control angle, the "Doorman" detour episode, and what all of this might be setting up for mutants and the next big MCU era. Timestamps and Topics (major beats) 00:00 Intro and guest welcome: Joe "Muscles of the Multiverse" 00:30 Joe's content approach: MCU-to-comics explainers + Reading the Multiverse podcast 02:15 Quick MCU news: Ian McKellen "destroyed New Jersey" comment and what it could imply 05:10 Wonder Man first reactions: why it's landing better than expected 06:40 Character-driven Marvel: Simon's relatability, anxiety, and hiding "who you are" in Hollywood 09:00 Acting as the hook: standout performances, "meta" acting scenes, and why Trevor works now 18:10 Wonder Man powers explained: ionic energy basics and how the MCU might simplify the lore 20:10 Bigger MCU threads: Vision/Wanda possibilities, mutant framing, and Damage Control as a warning sign 30:45 Episode balance talk: comedy vs drama, and why the Doorman episode hits so hard 41:00 What's next for Simon: hero-by-proxy theory, team potential, and final scores 44:40 Disney+ marketing debate: why some shows feel under-pushed and what Marvel can fix 50:35 Recommendations: The Ultimates (Deniz Camp) and revisiting Schitt's Creek 53:10 Joe's upcoming work: Doctor Doom deep cuts, Fantastic Four read-through, and the editing grind Key Takeaways Wonder Man works because it treats Simon Williams like a person first, superhero second. The show's comedy lands because the stakes stay real in the background, especially with Damage Control looming. Trevor Slattery is fully recontextualized here: still funny, but also weirdly wise and essential to Simon's growth. The Doorman episode is a standout swing that doubles as a Hollywood critique and a superhero fatigue commentary. Joe's breakdown of Simon's ionic-energy comic history highlights why Marvel rarely does strict comic-to-screen adaptation. Damage Control and the "quota" vibe point toward a wider MCU theme: institutional fear of powered people. Mutant groundwork is starting to feel less like a sudden switch and more like a slow social shift in-world. Both hosts land at a 9/10, with the only "missing point" being more about feel than a specific flaw. Memorable Quotes "There's usually never a 1 to 1 adaptation." "I didn't know that I needed more Trevor Slattery in my life. But now I do." "Mephisto is not going to be in everything." "It felt like it was made to be for an episodic TV show." "You can't help but root for Simon." Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the next review and interview. Hang on to your seats, familia! A super-size 2 hour episode breaking down our top 10 of Marvel Legends in 2025...unfiltered!!!!
In this week's episode, we chat with Chris Pramas of Green Ronin Publishing! We hear about adapting a series of novels as a TTRPG, implementing spaceship combat without writing a physics textbook, and the importance of considering what a fantasy city would smell like. Our conversation goes deep into the lifecycle of a tabletop game, the economics of the publishing industry, and the complications of crowdfunding. Spoilers abound for The Expanse and Broken Earth novel series. Thanks to Reilly for editing out the part where Jake tried to say "Fifth Season" but accidentally said "Fifth Element".Chris Pramas is the founder and co-owner of Green Ronin Publishing. They're the publisher behind Mutants and Masterminds and Fantasy Age as well as some very in-depth adaptations. We talk about the adaptations for The Fifth Season as well as The Expanse in quite a bit of detail, but their original content like Lost Island of the Pirate Queen is also extremely fun and flavourful. This year has been their 25th anniversary, so they've been doing some cool monthly specials. Also, the bankruptcy of their physical books distributor has had them in a bit of a bind over the past few months, so possibly consider helping them out?Green Ronin Publishing also has some community sites for people interested in building their own game supplements:AGE Creators Alliance is for Adventure Game Engine supplements.Chronicle System Guild is for Sword Chronicle supplements, which is the genericized version of the A Song of Ice and Fire system.Atomic Think Tank is a forum for Green Ronin TTRPGs more broadly.Chris has some great recommendations for nonfiction history:SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary BeardThe Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe by Matthew Gabriele and David M PerryReturn of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan, 1839-42 by William DalrympleWilliam Dalrymple and Anita Anand's podcast EmpireFinally, while we were putting these show notes together, we found the program for GenCon 2000, and it's an excellent examples of turn-of-the-century TTRPG graphic design. Head on over to our website to check it out. If you've enjoyed this interview, maybe go check out the first time we met Chris way back at OrcaCon 2025!For more conversations about publishing TTRPGs, go listen to our interview with David about self-publishing TTRPGs, our interview with Simon about minis (where we talk a lot about indie TTRPG publishing in the 90s), and our interview with Selius about publishing a third-party D&D supplement. For a discussion about TTRPG adaptations of sprawling fictional universes from the point of view of a GM, go listen to this episode with Jesse about playing a campaign in the Dune system. For some Flashlights where we talk about the history of Wizards of the Coast, here's the one where we talk about magazines and the birth of Paizo and here's the one where we talk about Chris Cox's tenure as Hasbro CEO. Thanks to Emmett for providing this week's intro! Emmett is one of the writers of the Heir of Smoke D&D supplement, which is extremely cool. If you like the music on the show, go check out more of Reilly's music. **Marvelists Episode: "Mutants, Tropes, and the Code of Honor"** In this blockbuster episode of The Marvelists, hosts Peter Melnick and Eddie Wilson welcome two fantastic special guests—Chris Piers from the acclaimed YouTube channel Comic Tropes and wrestling historian/podcaster Shane Hagadorn (co-host of An Honorable Mention and author of the upcoming book Code of Honor)—for a lively roundtable all about the X-Men and comics in general. Together, the four dive deep into mutant mayhem: Chris breaks down the storytelling tropes, visual clichés, and creative brilliance that have shaped X-Men comics for decades—from Claremont-era drama to iconic costume designs—while Shane brings his unique perspective as a lifelong X-fan, exploring the mutant metaphor, real-world social parallels, and unexpected connections between pro wrestling booking and Marvel's soap-opera mutant dynamics. Has it really been five years already? Well it has been for our favorite quartet of superheroes! Of course, a lot can change in that time. An unstable lab-brat can become an interstellar savior, a misplaced barbarian can be burdened with responsibility, a guilt-ridden genius can take the reins of leadership, and a future-haunted sidekick can do her best to leave that life behind. And we can take some of our favorite characters and play them in a whole different system! What happens when the former New Wave have to step up to the plate and become Halcyon City's all-star superhero team? Listen on and find out! Excelsior! Music by Perennial Sounds LLC

What's up, dudes? Thunder! Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats Christmas! Hoooooo!!!! Nicholas Pepin of Pop Culture Roulette and Laramy Wells from Moving Panels join me to talk about the humanoid feline aliens! In the issue #41 story ‘Footprints' from 1987, Cat's Lair is directly in the path of a creature called the Metokangmi! King Hanuman of Hook Mountain warns the ThunderCats, describing the destruction and fear in the creature's wake. Every Rammastide (the Third Earth equivalent of Christmas which commemorates the first defeat of Mumm-Ra) the inhabitants live in fear. Fortunately, this year Cat's Lair reminds the Metokangmi of its lost mate, and it just builds a snowman.Subsequently, issue #89 sees WilyKit and WilyKat build a snowman in the shape of Lion-O. Of course, the Mutants decide to crash the ThunderCats' Rammastide festivities, knocking over the snowman. Luckily, the intruder alarm alerted the heroes who quickly hid as snow sculptures and overtake the foes. The heroes then invite them in to celebrate. Finally, in issue #128, Snarf is home alone preparing a feast on Rammas Eve, when a traveling salesman tries to cash in. The sidekick tries to haggle with him, making a huge mess. As the ThunderCats return, they invite Snarf and the salesman to the Tower of Omens for Rammastide.Fierce beasts? Yep. Crazy art? Uh huh. Poontang? Only if it's the name of the traveling salesman!
