This show is no stranger to the MCU, but it's been a hot minute since the Infinity War & Endgame spoilercasts, and even longer since our last dedicated dive into this pop-culture juggernaut. Making her first appearance on the show, John's comrade in fandom Mia helps us catch up with releases beyond Black Widow, both by reflecting on memories of movies past, adjusting to an MCU without T'Challa, and in particular discussing the recent Shang-Chi and what its attention to cultural detail, great casting, and making up for Ben Kingsley's Mandarin mean to Mia as an Asian-American. Afterward, we take a deep dive into the first three live-action MCU series in the new frontier of Disney+ weekly series. Topics include how these shows take advantage of their longer format, speculating what consequences they may hold for future shows and movies, why Agatha rules and Hayward drools, how timely Falcon and Winter Soldier is, and the as-of-this-writing ongoing desire for an Alligator Loki plushie. HE'S A HACKER, QUESTION MARK?! Judy and Linda try out newer dramas for Fall 2021. We decided to give "D.P." (Deserter Pursuit), starring Jung HaeIn, Koo KyoHwan and Kim SungKyun, its own KDMEO episode. Coming soon!   Digressions:   0:47 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails! 11:39 - Judy insists that you watch "Seinfeld", now on Netflix, but only from season 2 onwards. 14:29 - Let season 2 of "The Baby-Sitters Club" give you a warm, comforting hug. 15:49 - "Far Cry 6" is out! Judy is new to the franchise and is eager to acquire the so-called Battle Chicken, but will it be enough to stave off the post-Mass Effect depression? 19:04 - Linda really enjoyed "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings", reminiscent of beautiful martial arts movies of old.   23:37 - "Yumi's Cells" (유미의 세포들) is a TVN drama, starring Kim GoEun and An BoHyun. It's based on a 2015 webtoon, which may have been amusing, but the animated bits slow down the pace way too much. Kim GoEun's bangs and An BoHyun's chin scruff are distractingly awful. 30:29 - "Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha" (갯마을 차차차) is a TVN romantic comedy, starring Shin MinA and Kim SeonHo. Judy remembers the 2004 movie with much fondness. This is an easy watch with two adorable lead actors, so try it out!  39:24 - "Police University" (경찰수업) is an eyeroll-inducing piece from KBS. It stars JinYoung (B1A4), Krystal (f(x)) and Cha TaeHyun, and they can't do anything to help the godawful material.    Some Korean terms:   답답하다 [dap-dap-ha-da] to be frustrated. 뽑기 [ppop-gi] candy made with sugar and baking soda; currently super popular due to "Squid Game".   Audio credits:   Jonathan Wolff - "Seinfeld Theme" Potty Mouth - "I Wanna" DJ Shadow - "Nobody Speak"  Joel P West - "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" - "Xu Shang-Chi" "Jurassic Park" - "It's a UNIX system! Every episode of What If is finally out and we're here to talk about the Guardians of the Multiverse, what worked for the series, and what didn't! If you're looking to have what we've seen in episode nine of What If...? discussed, you're in the right place! Each week we'll be breaking down the latest stories in the MCU beat by beat by discussing what works, what doesn't, and what it all means. The episode in review is called, What If...The Watcher Broke His Oath? It was written by A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews. We also continue the trend this week with breaking the episode down into three acts rather than most important topics. We follow along in pretty sequential chunks of the recent episode. This episode remains spoiler free until around the 10 minutes and 10 seconds mark! It's also important to note that given the recency and limited access of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it is exempt from the spoiler zone this week as well! This will continue until a week after Shang-Chi hits Disney Plus! In this episode we reference:Inside Marvel's ‘What If…?' Finale, Season 2 Plans and the T'Challa Spinoff That Never Was by Adam B. Tango Shalom was directed by Gabriel Bologna, son of Renée Taylor and the late Joseph Bologna. The cast includes Golden Globe Nominee Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Oscar and Emmy Award-winner Renée Taylor (Adam Sandler's The Do Over, The Producers, The Nanny), Karina Smirnoff (Dancing With The Stars), Joseph Bologna (My Favorite Year, Blame It On Rio, Big Daddy, Lovers and Other Strangers), Jos Laniado Claudio Laniado (Mudbound), Bern Cohen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Judi Beecher (Taken 3, Family is Family, La Garconne). Synopsis: When a female Tango dancer (Smirnoff) asks a Rabbi (Jos Laniado) to enter a dance competition, there's one big problem-due to his Orthodox beliefs, he's not allowed to touch her! Desperately in need of splitting the prize money to save his Hebrew school from bankruptcy, they develop a plan to enter the competition without sacrificing his faith. The bonds of family and community are tested one dazzling dance step at a time in this lighthearted fable. In Los Angeles, the film can be seen at Landmark Theaters on Pico and Town Center 5 in Encino, and September 10 opens at The Laemmle in Newhall. Tango Shalom also claims bragging rights to the best 2021 exclusive opening, as well having the best PTA, this Memorial Day to Labor Day summer season. Showing daily gross increases this weekend (Saturday +32% from Friday and Sunday +54% from Saturday) boasts to be the number one independent film release this weekend. On Friday, September 10, the interfaith movie that promotes peace, tolerance and inclusion, will expand onto more screens in New York and Los Angeles, and also across Canada in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver with additional screens to be announced soon.
