Nat and Gina began the film together during production, with Harry joining them for the director's cut, bringing together three editors who had each previously collaborated with Destin on projects ranging from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to Wonder Man. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day finds Peter Parker (Tom Holland) fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him. As Peter watches MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) continue their lives without him, the pressure of his isolation begins to trigger a transformation he may not be able to control. We've tuned out of Marvel on the podcast for a little while, but one of the eternally entertaining superheroes, Spider-Man, reignites our interest with Brand New Day. With Doctor Strange having cast a spell at the end of 2021's No Way Home to make the entire world forget Peter Parker, for reasons that Doctor Strange presumably cast another spell to make us forget, Peter, newly isolated, returns to fighting street-level crime in New York City while pining for his old relationships and suffering severe headaches. Can he revive his former life? Surely it wouldn't be a Marvel film if an enormously significant, cliff-hanging event had permanent consequences. Still, even for those as cynical as it's possible to be about the MCU, Brand New Day has plenty to recommend it. It aims for thematic depth - though how fully that's achieved is up for discussion - and is genuinely moving. Indeed, certain moments move the audience to cheer and applaud, which in turn moves Mike to harrumph bitterly. Destin Daniel Cretton, directing his second MCU entry following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, demonstrates a gift for working with actors and a strong instinct for staging action, although Cineworld does its best to undermine those virtues with its poor projection. We also return to our discussion of IMAX and The Odyssey, asking whether the frame's envelopment of the visual field impedes filmmakers' ability to express through composition and framing, and considering whether there's something fundamentally anti-democratic about making films whose fullest form can only be experienced at a handful of cinemas around the world. The Avengers Doomsday trailer dropped this week and Doug has already watched it four times. The full reaction is here: what landed, what it means for the MCU, why the Russos coming back gives genuine reason for optimism, and why Thor not cracking a single joke in the entire trailer is one of the most promising signs this movie is going somewhere real. The biggest moments get the full breakdown. Captain America's return and the Mjolnir handoff. RDJ as Doctor Doom and the most logical in-universe explanation for why he looks exactly like Tony Stark. The Loki TVA card and whether the average viewer has any idea what that means. Shang-Chi showing up despite not appearing in a single piece of Marvel content since 2021. The Fantastic Four's involvement. Gambit getting a moment that made a 10-year-old lose her mind. And the theory that this film is essentially Marvel's version of Secret Wars, a way of pruning timelines, retiring legacy characters, and rebooting the X-Men in a way that actually makes sense. Speaking of the X-Men, Doug and Natalie watched all five original Fox X-Men films over the weekend specifically to prepare for Doomsday. The full post-mortem covers everything the franchise got wrong: Wolverine was never supposed to be the main character, Cyclops got done catastrophically dirty across every single film, Rogue never threw one punch in three movies, the X-Men never once fought as a team despite that being their entire thing, and Hugh Jackman looked completely fine in the year 2000 and we as a society did something terrible to that man over the next 24 years. Before all that: a Reddit question about socially acceptable life choices that are actually kind of insane when you sit with them. Spending money you don't have to impress people you don't like. Working five days a week just to get two days of freedom. Choosing your entire career path when you are 17 years old. Sports fanaticism and the double standard that exists between jersey-wearing adults and anyone who shows up to a convention. Gambling, specifically the rise of sports betting apps and why that cottage industry is genuinely sinister. Posting everything on social media compulsively. And the hokey pokey. The Urban Dictionary game returns. This round covers Gert, Yop, Opstopper, Cap-tain, Gup, and Poo Shuttling. He gains crazy power and wealth for the next 1000 years. In 1996, Wenwu searches for Ta Lo, a village said to harbor mythical beasts. He travels through a magical forest to the village entrance but is stopped by a guardian, Ying Li. They flirt via fighting and fall in love. They end up having two kids, Shang-Chi & Xialing. In the present day, Shang-Chi works as a parking valet in the States with his best friend Katy. One day, they are attacked on a bus by men who steal a pendant that Li gave to Shang-Chi. We find out that the Ta Lo villagers rejected Wenwu so Li chose to leave with him. Wenwu abandoned his organization and locked away the ten rings. But clearly something's happened! Shang-Chi & Katy go to find Xialing, because they assume it was the Ten Rings that took his pendant and will go after the matching one Xialing has. They find Xialing at a secret fight club which she founded after escaping from Wenwu at 16. The Ten Rings attack the fight club and capture Shang-Chi, Katy, & Xialing. At the Ten Rings' compound, Wenwu uses the pendants to reveal a mystical map leading to Ta Lo. Wenwu explains that he has heard Li calling and believes she has been held captive in Ta Lo behind a sealed gate. He plans to destroy the village unless they release her. But that's not possible because she's dead. When Shang-Chi is seven years old, Li is murdered by Wenwu's enemies, the Iron Gang. Knowing his dad is crazy, they are like nah. We aren't helping you. They escape with the aid of disgraced actor Trevor Slattery and his mystical friend Morris, who guides them through the enchanted forest to Ta Lo. The group meets Li's sister Ying Nan who makes sure they are trained up. Wenwu and the Ten Rings arrive and attack. Wenwu overpowers Shang-Chi, and attacks the Gate he thinks his wife is being held behind. Turns out it's not his wife, it's the Dweller-in-Darkness. Wenwu saves Shang-Chi but is killed by the Dweller-in-Darkness. He gives the rings over to Shang-Chi before he dies. Shang-Chi and company are able to slay the Dweller-in-Darkness. Afterward, Shang-Chi and Katy return to San Francisco where no one believes their story. The sorcerer Wong shows up to get them. In a mid-credits scene, Wong introduces Shang-Chi and Katy to Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers and the group discusses the origins of the rings. We discuss the confirmed characters for Avengers: Doomsday that we have not discussed yet this season. Is Loki going to have sage wisdom or continue being his prankster self? What in the heck has Shang-Chi been up to? Is this Gambit going to be with the other X-Men? And how stressed out is poor Sam Wilson after all this Captain America and Avengers nonsense?

Justin has one free movie pass left before the month ends and needs to use it tonight,  so Doug helps him choose between Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and Masters of the Universe. This somehow turns into a 45-minute deep dive on everything happening in Hollywood right now, and honestly, it's one of the best movie conversations they've had in a while. First: the online hate for Supergirl is examined, dissected, and found to be exactly what everyone already knows it is. Same goes for the discourse around casting in The Odyssey, the Little Mermaid live action, and Dune. The pattern is not subtle and Doug has words. Then things get genuinely interesting. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is coming and Doug is all the way in — Greek mythology, massive ensemble cast (Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliott Page), and the first narrative film ever shot entirely on IMAX cameras. The IMAX conversation goes somewhere unexpected. Spider-Man Brand New Day gets the full breakdown: the Punisher's role, what the One Last Kill special means for his arc, and why having Frank Castle in a PG-13 Spider-Man movie is either brilliant or insane depending on how you look at it. Then: Avengers Doomsday. Are Doug and Justin cautiously optimistic or quietly terrified? Both. RDJ as Doctor Doom, the Jonathan Majors pivot, what the comics actually did with colliding dimensions, and why the Magneto limited series is the template they should be following. Plus, Marvel forgot Shang-Chi exists. It has been four years. Someone needs to answer for this. Also: Jared Leto — what happened? A genuine conversation about acting as a craft, why celebrity corrupts the thing that made people good at it, and how a handcrafted maple dresser at a consignment store connects to all of it somehow. Then: Doug and Justin review Backrooms (A24). Justin gives it three stars. Doug is closer to three and a half. They agree the production design is stunning, the acting is strong, the jump scares land, and the story leaves too many character motivations unresolved. A making-of documentary is urgently needed. Also also: Million Dollar Nannies on Hulu is a show that exists. Beth found it. They did not make it past the intro. And a brief, uncomfortable look at Love Island, reality TV, and why some people unwind by watching train wrecks. Movie audio clip guessing game: Justin goes three for three on Hook, Elvis (Baz Luhrmann), and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective — including a line from Ace Ventura that lands very differently as an adult than it did at age ten. This week's recommendations: Justin — Backrooms (A24). Not perfect, but worth seeing. The environment alone justifies the ticket price. Doug — Mecha Chameleon on Steam. Six dollars. Prop hunt where you paint yourself to blend into the scenery. Alpaca wants a professional digital artist league.
