Jack Dignan Opens Up About His Found Footage Horror Flick Puzzle Box in This Interview

On this episode Andrew chats with Aussie filmmaker Jack Dignan about his found footage horror film, Puzzle Box. Olivia (Laneikka Denne) heads out to a remote house in the woods to help her sister Kait (Kaitlyn Boyé) rehabilitate and escape her life of addiction. Olivia aims to document the process, almost in a way to show how far Kait will heal and change. Little does she know, instead of documenting Kait's rehabilitation, she instead manages to document the labyrinth-like house that they become trapped in where time loops over itself and unsettling events occur in the night. Puzzle Box will have its Australian Premiere at the upcoming A Night of Horror International Film Festival in Sydney on September 29. This is the second time that Jack has had a film screen at the festival, with his previous film After She Died winning the Best Australian Feature Film and Best Australian Feature Performance in 2022. Jack talks about where his interest in found footage films comes from, how working on films like Marvel's Shang-Chi and George Miller's Furiosa differs from working on an independent feature film, as well as how his previous work as a film critic informs his work as a director. This week, Michelle Yeoh makes her triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe - but this time, she's playing a different character with a bit more to do than in her brief GUARDIANS 2 cameo. Yeoh appears as Ying Nan in Destin Daniel Crettin's SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS, Marvel Studios' first film with an Asian lead and primarily Asian cast. Also starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and - in his very first English-languafe role - the legendary Tony Leung!

The Action Pack discuss costumes, set pieces, and potential stories. Then we turn to The Flash as it passes $260 mil, and compare it to Marvel's 2022 multiversal “misfire” with Doctor Strange & The Multiverse Of Madness. If Doc Strange made twice as much in one week last year as The Flash made in three weeks this year, what makes them different? Are we seeing comic fatigue, or is it merely situational? Plus, we have Shang-Chi in Thunderbolts (the comics) but no movie (til 2026??), Jean & Scott break up, Mary Jane as Jackpot, major Midtown sales, comic claws, and more - all on a new XI4S!

I am excited to welcome Eliot Borenstein to the podcast today to discuss his new monograph, Marvel Comics in the 1970s: The World Inside Your Head, published through Cornell University Press in 2023. Eliot is Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University. He has published a number of books: Soviet-Self-Hatred: The Secret Identities of Postsocialism (Cornell University Press, 2023); Plots against Russia: Conspiracy and Fantasy after Socialism (Cornell University Press, 2019); Men without Women: Masculinity and Revolution in Russian Fiction, 1917-1929 (Cornell University Press, 2000); and Overkill: Sex Violence, and Russian Popular Culture after 1991 (Cornell University Press, 2008). Marvel Comics in the 1970s focuses on five writers, all born between 1945 and 1948, and their iconic takes on characters and titles: Steve Engelhart's Shang-Chi and Doctor Strange; Doug Moench's Master of Kung Fu; Marv Wolfman's Tomb of Dracula; Don McGregor's Black Panther and Luke Cage; and Steve Gerber's Howard the Duck. In particular, the book explores how subjectivity and the self are expressed through the unique medium and genre constraints of 1970s-era Marvel comics. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's Succession & Barry, Showtime's Yellowjackets, AppleTV Plus's Ted Lasso, FreeVee's Jury Duty, CW's The Flash, and Disney Plus's The Mandalorian & Kiff. News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh discuss the latest on the WGA's strike and what it is they are looking for in their negotiations. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Bill was impressed by Max's relatively painless launch, their buzzy series finales, and the news Kim Cattrall would be returning to And Just Like That later this month. Josh returns to talk up the star power of AppleTV Plus's recent new series including Silo, Platonic, High Desert, The Crowded Room, and Hijack, while also noting Ted Lasso's maybe series finale. Finally, Alex gives it to Netflix again, this time thanks to its highly rated films A Man Called Otto and Mother, its buzzy new TV releases including FUBUR, I Think You Should Leave, The Ultimatum: Queer Love, and Hannah Gadsby: Something Special, and the fact that David Zaslav and not Netflix has become the WGA strike's greatest villain, against all odds. New Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Josh review American Born Chinese, Disney Plus's adaptation of the 2006 Gene Luen Yang Graphic Novel of the same name. The series was created by actor and writer Kelvin You, and executive produced by Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings's Destin Daniel Cretton, who also directs the premiere and finale of the first season. It stars Ben Wang as 10th Grader Jin Wang and Jimmy Liu as Wei-Chen, the son of the legendary Monkey King who has rebelled against his father by stealing his father's staff and posing as a human while he embarks on a mystical quest. Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, and Daniel Wu costar. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popbreaktv/message
