The Wisdom From The Wardrobe Retrospective: Fashion Trends, Personal Style & 244 Episodes of Wardrobe Wisdom

    Wisdom From the Wardrobe

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2026 29:25

After 244 episodes of fashion debates, wardrobe dilemmas, trend predictions, and the occasional style confession, the Wisdom From the Wardrobe team takes a step back to look at the journey of the show itself. What began as a simple monthly conversation about clothes grew into a weekly exploration of fashion trends, personal style, wardrobe psychology, and the ever-changing relationship people have with getting dressed. Naturally, this episode begins in classic Wisdom From the Wardrobe fashion, with a slightly unexpected detour. Bec arrives armed with a Thera-Cane and the bold declaration that she may have been "born to be 80," which quickly leads to a lively discussion about the so-called Potato Shoe Theory. From Birkenstock Bostons to UGG slippers to foam-molded footwear that looks suspiciously like it may have been inspired by root vegetables, the team explores the rise of comfort-first fashion and the curious charm of "ugly-cute" shoes in the 2020s. From there the conversation turns toward the show itself and the many directions it has taken over the years. Along the way the team revisits memorable moments, spirited debates around the table, surprising fashion comebacks, and the universal wardrobe mystery of why we all seem to own at least one item we've never worn but absolutely refuse to part with. More than anything, this retrospective celebrates the conversations that made the show what it is: discussions about confidence, identity, creativity, and the small daily ritual of choosing how we present ourselves to the world through clothing. After hundreds of conversations about style, trends, and the psychology of getting dressed, the team reflects on what they've learned and what they hope listeners have taken away from the show. Trends may come and go, but great style — like a good conversation — never really goes out of fashion.   If this is your first time listening, here are a few episodes from the archive to get you started: • Our conversations about personal style and confidence • Episodes exploring fashion trends and wardrobe psychology • Listener favorite discussions on closet clean-outs and wardrobe strategy Browse the full archive and discover more conversations about fashion, style, and the everyday ritual of getting dressed.

We're celebrating 1980's Cannon action films with a retrospective on how important these movies were to our fandom then, and the nostalgic grasp they still have on us today. On this episode we discuss Jean-Claude Van Damme's cult classic movie, BLOODSPORT (1988).  Bloodsport is a 1988 American martial arts film directed by Newt Arnold and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, with a supporting cast of Leah Ayres, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, Norman Burton, Forest Whitaker, and Bolo Yeung. The film centers on Frank Dux (Van Damme), a United States Army captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Based on Dux's real-life claims, the film was marketed as a true story. It was one of Van Damme's first lead roles and showcased his abilities, launching his career as a mainstream action star. We will also discuss the films 1980's Cannon Films Famous Producers, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. 443. Pulmonary Embolism: The Modern Approach to Pulmonary Embolism Care with Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield

    Cardionerds

This inaugural episode of the CardioNerds Pulmonary Embolism (PE) Series explores the evolution of acute PE care. Dr. Ibrahim Zahid, Dr. Dinu Balanescu, and Dr. Billy Joe Mullinax join guest expert Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield to discuss the shifting landscape of PE management. Pulmonary embolism (PE) remains a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality and a frequent diagnostic challenge, often masquerading as myocardial infarction or a benign illness. Over the past decade, PE care has evolved from anticoagulation-only strategies to nuanced, risk-stratified, multidisciplinary management. Modern approaches integrate hemodynamics, biomarkers, and advanced imaging to guide therapy, including catheter-directed interventions and large-bore thrombectomy. The Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) model addresses historical gaps by coordinating rapid, multispecialty decision-making and standardizing care pathways. The PERT Consortium further advances PE care through education, research, and the world's largest PE registry, while fostering leadership and research opportunities for trainees. Despite advances, long-term outcomes and post-PE syndromes remain important areas for future investigation. Audio editing by CardioNerds Academy intern, student doctor, Pace Wetstein. Enjoy this Circulation 2022 Paths to Discovery article to learn about the CardioNerds story, mission, and values. Pearls PE is a “master masquerader”—maintain suspicion for atypical presentations like myocardial infarction, heart failure, flu, or anxiety. Multidisciplinary management mediated through pulmonary embolism response teams improves outcomes and standardizes care. Risk stratification integrates hemodynamics, biomarkers, and imaging. Advanced therapies have expanded beyond anticoagulation. Long‑term follow‑up and post‑PE syndrome need more research. Notes Notes: Notes drafted by Dr. Ibrahim Zahid. 1. How has the clinical approach to PE changed over the past decade? PE is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death and historically under‑recognized. Symptoms mimic MI, HF, asthma, syncope, and more.PE is a silent killer, and it should be recognized more as a cause of spontaneous cardiac arrest. Where life threatening disease like stroke which is owned by neurological specialists and MI is primarily managed by cardiac specialists, PE is an entity without a professional home. The PERT Consortium brings the specialties together for PE care. 2. Ten years ago, a 58-year-old patient with a large bilateral PE, RV dilation, and positive biomarkers might have been managed with anticoagulation and close observation alone. Today, with evolving—but still uneven—data on advanced therapies, PE care feels far more nuanced and highly dependent on where you practice. What are the major gaps in traditional PE management that clinicians should recognize, and what care pathways should they be aware of across different hospital systems? Care has shifted from anticoagulation‑only to multidisciplinary approaches like catheter directed thrombectomy. Risk‑based pathways and the use of CT angiogram has improved early recognition. Risk stratification tools must be used as tools for early recognition of intermediate risk PE. Untreated PE leads to chronic complications like chronic thromboembolic disease and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, which requires long term clinic follow up. 3. What is the role of risk stratification tools such as PeSI, sPeSI scores, cardiac biomarkers, and imaging findings in PE, and how do they guide treatment decisions in real world practice? Integrate vitals (blood pressure and heart rate), biomarkers (troponin, pro-BNP), RV/LV ratio assessment, acid‑base status, and scores. Tools include PESI, sPESI, BOVA, HESTIA, FAST, Geneva, NEWS, shock index. Vitals, lactate, acid-base status, and tools like NEWS or shock index track clinical evolution. PESI/sPESI estimate 30-day mortality and help identify low-risk patients who may be candidates for early discharge or outpatient therapy. Clinical judgment matters—scores don't fully capture clot burden, trajectory, or bleeding risk. 4. How was the pulmonary embolism response team created, and since its creation, what evidence or outcome data became available to support the PERT model? Originated after a sentinel case at MGH: A young, pregnant woman in her 30s, who collapsed at home, underwent thrombectomy, and had to be on ECMO for a few days. The case brought cardiology, cardiac surgeons and critical care physicians together for planning and improvement in her health, which was rewarding. Thereby, it was decided to bring specialties involved in PE care together to create a response team. The name of the team, Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT), was coined by Richard Channick in the first meeting. Posters were set up all over the hospital to call a centralized line when an acute PE is recognized A meeting was held to present the concept of putting together a consortium, with development of action items and a PERT database. Enabled rapid multidisciplinary input using early teleconferencing tools. 5. Given concerns about having too many ‘cooks in the kitchen' during the initial PE call—especially with rotating teams—how can institutions reconcile workflow complexity with standardized pathways in a way that meaningfully supports and justifies the added burden on frontline clinicians? Every hospital's PERT is different, catering to their needs and workflow At least two disciplines are needed to make a PERTData is currently being collected to guide further on how the workflow can be standardized Most importantly, the team brings in resources that were not available prior to PERT formation. 6. What are the main goals of the PERT consortium, and how does it support clinicians and institutions involved? To improve care and improve outcomes for patients with PE Expand education, refine algorithms, standardize care with Centers of Excellence. Maintain the largest PE registry for research and outcomes improvement. 7. Nigel Baker: Why Scrum Masters Should Be Measured on Outcomes, Impacts, and Team Happiness Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes.   "No customer's going to come to you and say, do you know why I bought your product? Your remarkable compliance with your internal development process. What they're interested in is outcomes and impacts." - Nigel Baker   Nigel challenges the traditional ways of measuring Scrum Master success. He points to tools like the Nokia test—which, he jokes, was neither a test nor invented by Nokia—as examples of process fidelity assessments that miss the point entirely. Compliance with a process tells you nothing about whether customers are satisfied or whether the team is delivering value. Instead, Nigel argues for measuring Scrum Masters on outcomes and impacts: customer satisfaction, revenue generation, and efficiencies—the same things a Product Owner gets judged on.  But he adds a crucial dimension that POs often overlook: team happiness. Not as an end goal, but as a leading indicator. Happy teams don't leave. Happy teams do better work. Team contentness is a KPI that signals whether the deeper success factors are in place. When your team is deeply unhappy, no amount of velocity or story completion will save you from attrition and decline.   Self-reflection Question: How are you currently measuring your success as a Scrum Master—on process compliance, or on the outcomes, impacts, and wellbeing your team actually delivers? Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Keep It Fresh—A Different Format Every Sprint Nigel's answer to the "favorite retrospective format" question is deliberately controversial: he doesn't have one. His approach is to use a different format every single sprint. Retrospective formats, he argues, "age like milk"—by Sprint 12, asking "what should we do differently?" with the same structure produces diminishing returns. Novelty creates energy. He sometimes gets teams to invent their own formats, which produces some of the most forensic and intense retrospectives he's seen—teams building "superweapons" and then realizing they have to turn those weapons on themselves. But Nigel's most practical tip is using retrospective techniques inside the Sprint Review. The Review is a product retrospective, and stakeholders shouldn't sit "like Roman emperors in the Colosseum, watching the developers as gladiators." Instead, use facilitation methods to extract "sweet, juicy, honey-flavoured feedback" from stakeholders about what they'd change in the product.   [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

How Tech Leaders Can Stop Playing the Cat-and-Mouse Game in Compliance

    Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Guest post by Lee Bryan Tech leaders in regulated consumer product sectors who treat regulation as a game of hide and seek eventually get found. Across the UK and EU, the same pattern keeps repeating in sectors like consumer electronics, cosmetics, children's toys, PPE, sex toys, and novel nicotine products. A brand scales quickly, leans on a grey area in product classification, stretches a claims boundary, exploits a labelling technicality, or relies on an under-resourced enforcement body. Compliance, the Loophole Loop and Tech Leaders Revenue spikes. Marketplaces open up. Influencers amplify the product. Then enforcement catches up. Listings are removed. Products are detained. Responsible Persons are scrutinised. Documentation is demanded. Fines land. The same leadership team that once celebrated "moving fast" now scrambles to explain what went wrong. This is the Loophole Loop. It is the cycle of exploiting regulatory gaps, triggering scrutiny, reacting under pressure, and then searching for the next workaround. It feels strategic in the short term. It is structurally weak in the long term. The Cat-and-Mouse Illusion Many founders in regulated consumer markets see compliance as friction imposed by bureaucrats who do not understand innovation. Regulations feel slow. Guidance feels ambiguous. Enforcement feels inconsistent. So the internal logic becomes: The regulation is vague. The guidance is outdated. The enforcement body is stretched. There is no clear precedent yet. Therefore, we are safe. That assumption no longer holds. UK and EU authorities are increasingly deploying automation and AI-powered investigation and enforcement tools. What once required physical inspections or whistleblowers can now be identified remotely and at scale. Product listings are scraped automatically. Packaging artwork is analysed through image recognition. Claims are scanned for trigger words. Marketplace data is cross-referenced with customs records. Corporate structures are mapped across jurisdictions. The cost of being "under the radar" has collapsed. What used to be a slow-moving chess match is now algorithmic risk detection. Why the Loophole Loop Is Shrinking The gap between innovation and enforcement in regulated consumer products is narrowing for three structural reasons. First, digital transparency. Even physical product businesses are now digitally exposed. Websites, Amazon listings, TikTok ads, influencer partnerships, shipping data, and online reviews create an open data trail. Every aggressive claim leaves evidence. Second, cross-border intelligence. UK and EU authorities increasingly share information. A packaging issue flagged in one member state can trigger scrutiny elsewhere. The idea that a brand is "small" or "flying under the radar" rarely reflects reality in a digital marketplace. Third, automated triage. Enforcement bodies do not need to manually inspect every operator. They can prioritise risk using signals. Rapid sales growth. High-risk product categories. Missing UK Responsible Persons or EU Authorised Representatives. Inconsistent Declarations of Conformity. Unsupported marketing claims. These are patterns that machines can detect. If your growth strategy depends on staying invisible, it is already outdated. The Real Cost of Playing the Game The Loophole Loop produces four predictable outcomes for tech-enabled consumer brands. 1. Strategic instability. Product pivots become driven by regulatory panic rather than customer insight. 2. Investor friction. Serious investors now conduct regulatory diligence earlier. A business model built on definitional technicalities looks fragile. 3. Brand damage. In sectors involving children, safety, chemicals, or electronics, public enforcement action erodes trust quickly and permanently. 4. Margin destruction. Retrospective remediation is expensive. Relabelling. Reformulation. Product withdrawal. Storage fees. Legal advice. Emergency compliance audits. All destroy cash. The irony is s...

Kevin Schaefer, Andy Walsh, and Christian Ashley dive deep into the mutant mayhem of the first three X-Men films in this episode of Systematic Geekology. Their mission? To prep for the upcoming X-Men appearance in Avengers: Doomsday later this year. They kick things off by reminiscing about their first impressions of the original X-Men movie, dissecting its impact on the superhero genre, and sharing their thoughts on how the characters were portrayed. As they move through X2 and The Last Stand, the trio doesn't shy away from addressing the glaring missteps and missed opportunities in the franchise, especially regarding character development and story arcs. Tune in for a thoughtful and witty discussion filled with nostalgia, critiques, and a sprinkle of mutant magic! A deep dive into the nostalgia-inducing world of the first three X-Men movies, this episode of Systematic Geekology sees Kevin Schaefer, Andy Walsh, and Christian Ashley embarking on a journey to recall the pivotal moments that defined a generation of superhero cinema. They kick things off with the original X-Men film from 2000, exploring its groundbreaking approach to comic book adaptations at a time when the genre was still finding its footing in Hollywood. The trio discusses the film's significant themes, like the struggle for acceptance and the moral ambiguity of power, while also taking a critical look at its deviations from the source material. They reminisce about their first viewing experiences and how the movie introduced them to beloved characters like Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto, all portrayed by a stellar cast that has stood the test of time. As they dissect the film, they touch on the cultural impact it had, setting the stage for a comic book movie renaissance that would follow. A blend of personal anecdotes and insightful commentary makes this segment a must-listen for fans eager to revisit the origins of the X-Men franchise. Transitioning to X2: X-Men United, the discussion shifts to the sequel that many fans consider a hallmark of superhero filmmaking. Kevin, Andy, and Christian delve into how X2 expanded upon its predecessor's foundation, introducing new characters like Nightcrawler and giving existing ones more depth and arcs that felt more balanced. The opening sequence involving Nightcrawler's infiltration of the White House is highlighted as a standout moment, showcasing not only exhilarating action but also the film's thematic depth regarding prejudice and acceptance. The hosts share their thoughts on how the film navigated complex relationships and conflicts among the characters, particularly the uneasy alliance between Xavier and Magneto in the face of a greater threat. The group also reflects on the film's legacy and its role in shaping the narrative landscape of the superhero genre, establishing a standard that many future films would strive to achieve. This segment is filled with fond memories and critical insights, making it a perfect nostalgia trip for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Finally, the episode wraps up with a candid analysis of X-Men: The Last Stand, a film that has garnered mixed reactions over the years. The hosts tackle the ambitious yet flawed attempt to merge the Cure storyline with the iconic Dark Phoenix saga, lamenting the missed opportunities to fully explore each narrative. They discuss how the film's chaotic production led to a disjointed experience, with key characters like Cyclops receiving little to no development. The conversation touches on the film's failings in comparison to its predecessors, particularly in terms of character depth and thematic resonance. Yet amidst the critiques, there are glimmers of appreciation, such as Kelsey Grammer's portrayal of Beast and the potential that the storyline held, had it been executed with more care. As they navigate through the highs and lows of the film, the trio reflects on the lessons learned from the trilogy as a whole, setting the stage for future discussions on the X-Men's cinematic journey. This final segment serves as a reminder of the complexity of adapting beloved source material and the challenges that come with evolving a franchise over time.Takeaways:The podcast dives deep into the first three X-Men movies, examining their cultural impact as they gear up for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.Kevin, Andy, and Christian share nostalgic memories of the original X-Men film, highlighting how it shifted the superhero genre landscape back in 2000.They discuss the character dynamics, particularly the complexity of Rogue and her journey, which resonates with themes of identity and acceptance.Listeners learn how the trilogy's writing struggles led to missed opportunities, particularly in portraying the characters' depth and moral complexities..Be sure to check out our merch, find extra content, and become an official member of Systematic Geekology on our website:https://systematic-geekology-shop.fourthwall.com/.Check out our other Marvel episodes:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/fb519d38-2d9b-4f82-b041-81b81613543c.Check out other episodes with Andy:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/c86f7a67-357b-4324-bf95-e42cedb9932a.Listen to every episode with Christian:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/ebf4b064-0672-47dd-b5a3-0fff5f11b54c.Don't miss any of our other episodes with Kevin:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/84fd7d06-cf1f-48e5-b358-09a01c5a6bc9Mentioned in this episode:Get Your SG Merch now!Check out the link to see all of our different t-shirts, backpacks, drinking glasses, pajamas, and more! Season Endings and Real-World Goodbyes This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl break down the Season 1 finale of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reflect on the season as a whole, and celebrate the life and career of actor Robert Carradine. Did the finale land the joust, or did it pull up short at the lists? And where does this first season rank among HBO's growing Westerosi saga? Plus, we say goodbye to a certified nerd icon. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 News Bites – Robert Carradine: 5:30 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Review: 13:47 Season 1 Retrospective: 40:12 Final Thoughts: 46:52 News Bites Robert Carradine (1954–2026) Robert Carradine, best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds, has passed away. Carradine was part of the legendary Carradine acting family, son of John Carradine and brother to David and Keith Carradine. While he built a long résumé in film and television, he became a generational touchstone for playing the underdog genius in the 1984 cult classic Revenge of the Nerds and its sequels. Beyond that franchise, Carradine appeared in projects such as The Long Riders, Lizzie McGuire, King of the Nerds, and numerous television roles across decades. He embodied a very specific cinematic archetype: the smart outsider who eventually wins. For an entire era of fandom, he helped make “nerd” aspirational. We tip the pocket protector in respect. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Season 1 Finale Episode Title: ‘The Morrow’ Director: Sarah Adina Smith Writer: Ira Parker & Ti Mikkel Network: HBO The Season 1 finale brings Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg's first major Westerosi chapter to a close. Lyonel invites Dunk to move to Storm’s End, but Dunk believes that he brings only bad luck. Baelor’s body is cremated at his funeral. Dunk finds Valarr, who questions why his father died, but Dunk was left alive. Raymun reveals he has married the prostitute Rowan, alias Red. Maekar informs Dunk that Aerion will spend time in the Free Cities to atone. He laments that Baelor would have been a good king and invites Dunk to Summerhall, where Egg can be his squire; Dunk declines, which Egg overhears. In a flashback, Dunk asks Arlan why he was never knighted. Arlan retorts that a true knight always finishes a story. In the present, Daeron tells Dunk to mentor Egg to prevent him from becoming like Aerion. Egg discovers that his hair is regrowing. He takes a knife to Aerion’s bedroom, but Maekar calms him down. Dunk asks Maekar if Egg can squire for him on the road, but Maekar refuses. Raymun buys Sweetfoot back for Dunk, who then gifts her to Raymun. As Dunk leaves Ashford, Egg arrives, and they depart together. Egg suggests that they travel to Dorne. An angry Maekar later realizes that Egg is gone. Key themes explored: – Honor vs. ambition – The weight of legacy – The quiet tension of noble politics – The personal cost of knighthood – Nature vs. Nurture The episode leans more on moral consequence than explosive set pieces, reinforcing the show's identity as a smaller-scale, character-first entry in the Game of Thrones universe. Brian & Darryl Discuss: – Did the finale feel satisfying or intentionally restrained? – Was the pacing consistent with the season's slower, novelistic approach? – Standout performances – Production design and tonal consistency – How does this set up future seasons Rating out of 5 When the Laughing Storm Offers You War, You Say Yes Brian: 4.88/5 Darryl: 4.6/5 Season 1 Retrospective Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms carved out its own lane in Westeros by shrinking the scope and focusing on intimacy over spectacle. Season strengths: – Character chemistry between Dunk and Egg – Political nuance without overwhelming lore – Strong costume and set authenticity – A grounded tone closer to early Game of Thrones Rating out of 10, Wow, That Hedge Knight has a HUGE “Sword” Brian: 9.17/10 Darryl: 9.5/10 Question of the Week What would you do if you were invisible for a day? This episode of the podcast is a recording of the lecture that Billy Schenck gave to collectors and friends at the Maynard Dixon and Native American Art Museum in early February 2026. The lecture centered around Schenck's prints and the many types of works he's reproduced over the past 55 years. Billy also discusses his iconic career, going into depth about his contemporaries and how he has been influenced by the ever changing cast of artists in his life. The lecture serves as the end point in a trilogy of podcasts filmed over the last 3 years. These three episodes of the podcast revolved his hugely successful 55-Year Retrospective exhibit and sale that opened at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, AZ on February 6th, 2026.Billy Schenck is a pioneer in the pop-western art movement and we are extremely grateful to have hosted such an important show. His work is on display in dozens of museums across the country, and will someday be housed in his own museum near Santa Fe, New Mexico. This lecture was not only educational, but very entertaining and I'm glad we were able to record it. This is Billy Schenck on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 384.

The Accidental Empire: Marmol Radziner on Preservation, Prefab, and Fighting the Tyranny of the Nimby. Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner discuss the 36-year evolution of their design-build firm, tracing its roots in a student co-op to becoming a leader in modern residential architecture, restoration, and the urgent need for sustainable urban density in Los Angeles. The conversation features Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner, co-founders of Marmol Radziner, detailing the firm’s history, their design philosophy, and their views on the current state of preservation and sustainability in LA. Origin Story and The Return to Modernism: The co-founders met as students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, living in “The Ark,” a condemned co-op. This environment of free rein to alter the building foreshadowed their later design-build approach. They founded their firm in 1989 during the “dying days of postmodernism,” quickly committing to the modernist ideal of clarity, reduction, and the connection between design and craft (Bauhaus). They attribute the firm’s early success to aligning with the eventual return to California modernism, driven by its rich history in the region. Milestone Projects and Preservation: The first major flag-planting project was the Gutentag Studio (a small, pure concrete block and cedar studio), followed by the new Ward Residence. Their watershed moment in preservation was the Kaufmann House restoration (1993) in Palm Springs. At the time, there was virtually no industry for modern restoration, forcing the firm to develop the roadmap for approaching these aging buildings. They view restorations as “classrooms” that inform their new work, maintaining a healthy split of one-third restoration and two-thirds new construction. Preservation Today: The Fetish vs. Functionality: Marmol and Radziner argue they are often at odds with the preservation community because they believe historic properties must evolve to remain functional and relevant, cautioning against a “fetish” that prevents necessary change. They criticize the current situation where every modern building is deemed “sacred,” citing the contentious, successful fight to demolish the Barry Building on San Vicente as an example of overreach where the building’s significance did not rise to the level requiring preservation. The Problem of Scale (“McModerns”) and Efficiency: They express concern over the proliferation of “McModerns” and elephantine houses, driven by high property values and the pressure to “max out the buildable area” on a site. They emphasize that their modern perspective is less about style and more about the fundamental importance of connection—internal open plans and connecting the home to the landscape and exterior rhythm of nature (a concept that is lost when properties are overbuilt). Sustainability and the Nimby Problem: While California leads the country in robust, fire-resilient, and energy-efficient building codes (which have been a success), they gave the state’s housing policy an “F.” Leo Marmol asserted that the greenest thing the city can do is densify and allow more housing in the urban core, calling out the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) mentality as the primary political failure that forces sprawl and long commutes. The Return to Prefabrication (Prefab 2.0): Marmol Radziner initially experimented with prefab from 2004–2012 but stopped after the 2008 crash. They are now returning to prefabrication—Prefab 2.0—as a response to the current “crisis of construction costs” and the need for quick, affordable, and sustainable housing solutions, particularly for fire rebuilds in Altadena and the Palisades. Design-Build Practice Scale: The firm combines Architecture, Construction Services (design-build), Landscape Architecture, and Interior Design under one roof. They support their construction services with their own dedicated cabinet shop and metal shop in El Segundo, allowing for control over craft and execution. Fire Resilience and Landscape: The fires are affecting landscape rules, particularly regarding Zone Zero (the 0–5 feet immediately surrounding the building). They argue against the extreme position of “no planting” in Zone Zero, believing the right, well-irrigated planting can help against embers, which they identify as the biggest culprit in mass fires, more so than direct flame. Home hardening (sealing every vulnerability) is considered the single most important factor, with modern energy codes being an accidental but highly effective form of fire hardening.

In our Season 4 retrospective, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Naviere Walkewicz '99 and Wyatt Hornsby, the Association & Foundation's senior vice president of marketing and communications, revisit the clips that stuck with them.  - “Mind. Body. Spirit.”  - “What can I do for others?”  - “Be humble. Be credible. Be approachable.” These aren't just soundbites. They're leadership gold. This episode will remind you why these conversations matter. TOP 10 LEADERSHIP TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE Lead from mind, body, and spirit Sustainable leadership requires caring for mental clarity, physical stamina, and spiritual/emotional grounding. Leadership is a daily practice, not a position Being a leader shows up in consistent habits and choices, not just in moments when you have the spotlight or a title. Mental health fuels clarity and creativity Protecting your mindset and mental health enables focus, problem-solving, and innovation. Physical readiness underpins reliability Long hours and high-demand environments require physical energy and stamina so you can show up for others when it counts. Spiritual/emotional health anchors your “why” Knowing your purpose and values helps you make grounded decisions and stay steady in pressure or uncertainty. Shift from “Why me?” to “What can I do for others?” Transform challenges by asking how you can serve your team and community, rather than focusing on personal hardship. Selfless leadership unlocks others' potential When you lead by example and create opportunities for others to excel, people gain confidence and stretch toward their own “superhero” potential. Humility, credibility, and approachability are core leadership traits Effective leaders are humble about their limits, credible in what they say and do, and approachable enough that others feel safe coming to them. Trust and respect are earned, not assumed Especially with large teams and many colleagues, you must earn trust and respect through consistent behavior, not rely on rank or title. Leadership is ongoing presence and intention Leadership “doesn't start with a title”; it's about showing up with intention and care, being present when it matters, and putting others first over the long term.   CHAPTERS 0:00:07 Introduction & Episode Setup 0:00:54 Intro – Leadership as Daily Practice (Tanji Johnson Bridgeman) 0:01:19 Mind, Body, Spirit in Leadership 0:02:06 Reflection on Intentional, Holistic Leadership 0:02:39Intro – Selfless Leadership & Inspiring Others (Dave Harden) 0:02:59 Transforming Challenges & Leading Selflessly 0:03:26 Reflection on Timeless, Presence-Based Leadership 0:04:03 Intro – Humble, Credible, Approachable (Rep. I'm Naviere Walkewicz. Wyatt Hornsby: 0:10 And I'm Wyatt Hornsby, and today we're hitting pause for a moment and we're going to look back. Naviere Walkewicz 0:14 Yes, this episode is our Season 4 retrospective. We're revisiting some of the leadership moments that really stayed with us long after the microphones were turned off. Wyatt Hornsby 0:25 We went back through the season and selected three clips among many amazing ones, each from a guest who brought a different perspective on leadership, but all with a common thread: responsibility to people. Naviere Walkewicz 0:36 Absolutely. We're going to play each clip, Wyatt and I will react to it and talk about why those still matter. Wyatt Hornsby 0:43 And at the end of the show, we'll also look ahead. We've got upcoming guests to share and a couple of important changes and exciting changes to how Long Blue Leadership will be published going forward. Naviere Walkewicz 0:54 Absolutely. So let's get started. All right. Our first clip comes from Tanji Johnson Bridgeman, Class of '97. Her episode stood out because of how she directly spoke about leadership being a daily practice. Now as you listen, pay close attention to how she talks about the health of your mind, body and spirit, and how those together form the foundation of great leaders. Tanji Johnson Bridgeman 1:19 Mind, body, spirit. Why is that important? Because in anything, any philosophies that we adopt, we have to really see where it's important. So when you think of what is an officer — what is a leader going to have to do with their mind? This is where they have to have clarity. It's going to help with focus, creativity, to innovate new solutions. And so we need to be able to prioritize our mindset and our mental health. And then there's the body, right? So a lot of us are going to be going on deployments. We're going to work long hours. Our body is what's going to give us the fuel and energy and the stamina to get through a day. It's literally bringing our energy. And then you think about the spirit, and this one is really special, and it's probably the most neglected. So when you think about the spirit, this is where you're going to anchor in with your emotional health. What is your purpose? What is your why? Wyatt Hornsby 2:06 That is such a great insight. And what really resonates with me, Naviere, is Tanji's emphasis on health and wellness is a critical component of leading others — that integration. Naviere Walkewicz 2:16 Yes, well, you know, we both really take our health and wellness seriously, but I think to the level that she really talked about it being — she really had this quiet confidence, and I think that also spoke volumes, right? It's not just about being physical, but being in your mind, body and spirit really well. And so I think that when we think about how that plays into being really intentional, people will experience you differently. Wyatt Hornsby 2:39 All right. Our second clip comes from Dave Harden, Class of '95. Dave brought perspective shaped by high-stakes environments where leadership is about inspiring others. Listen for how he connects looking outside of yourself, for your team with leading them to their own greatness. Dave Harden 2:55 If we can transform, if we can pause, if we can look up right and see the faith and the what if and not say, say, Why is this happening to me? But what can I do with it? What can I do for others? How can I connect in a meaningful way? You will transform your life. You'll transform your leadership, and you'll transform the people around you, because they'll be inspired to be superheroes in their own right. Naviere Walkewicz 3:26 Wow. That was a very powerful clip. And I just remember his conversation being really powerful, because there were so many moments where we talked about, you know, when you're really leaning into the fire. But this particular clip — what spoke to me, Wyatt — he was saying, if you lead selflessly and by example, looking for others to have opportunities to excel, they actually find the confidence in what they're able to give and do and striving for more. Thought that's really powerful, for sure. Wyatt Hornsby 3:51 Agree Naviere, and that's really timeless leadership. Whether you're leading in uniform or outside of it, people trust leaders who are present when it counts. And Dave really personifies that. Naviere Walkewicz 4:03 Yes, our third clip comes from Congressman August Pfluger, Class of 2000. When we spoke to the congressman, he brought a unique perspective, one shaped by military service and now public service. His leadership journey didn't end when he took off the uniform. It simply evolved. And this clip reflects that sense of responsibility to those one leads. To do that successfully means establishing credibility. Let's roll the clip. August Pfluger 4:30 Growing up professionally in a fighter squadron, there were three tenants that they, even though I didn't go to weapons school, they teach you: that's to be humble, credible and approachable. I mean, think about that. Those are the core tenants of who our lead warriors are. And that is not what you see. When you think of politicians. You think, Well, they're braggadocios and annoying, and, you know, OK, I hope I don't fall into that category. I need to do some self-reflection every once while, but, but I've got a staff of almost 40 people, and I have 434 other colleagues that you have to work with. So you better believe that you've got to be humble, because there are people who are better than you in every category, you better believe that being approachable in this job is really important, because people are going to come to you and they're going to need something, or you're going to need something from them, and if you don't have the credibility of what you're talking about or what you're leading, then you're not going to get anything done. Wyatt Hornsby 5:37 Great insights from the congressman. And that's really one of those leadership truths that carries across every domain for him now in Washington, DC, and the congressman is reminding us that leadership doesn't start with a title. Naviere Walkewicz 5:50 I really appreciate that. I think specifically when he said he had over 400 colleagues, that really stood out to me about not leading with the title, but really leading with your virtue and being there. And so I love the fact that he talked about earning trust respect, and then with that comes credibility. Wyatt Hornsby 6:06 And being approachable. Naviere Walkewicz 6:08 Being approachable. Yes, we see him doing that all the time. Wyatt Hornsby 6:13 All right, so let's look ahead. As we close out this retrospective, we also want to take a moment to look forward, but before we look forward, let me just say that these were three conversations among so many great ones from Season 4. Naviere Walkewicz 6:26 It was hard to choose, wasn't it wise? Wyatt Hornsby 6:28 It was so hard to choose. And we encourage you, if you have not listened to all of Season 4, check them out, because there's so many wonderful guests here. Thanks for the great job you did hosting those conversations. Naviere Walkewicz 6:40 Always my pleasure. Always my pleasure. In fact, gosh, going back, I think, all the way to Season 1, there's always someone, a guest, that our graduates and other listeners, and gosh, our viewers can really resonate with. There's some wonderful leadership lesson down there. Wyatt Hornsby 6:53 And easy to find. You can you can get our episodes anywhere you get your podcast. Naviere Walkewicz 6:57 Yes, we have some outstanding guests coming up. These are leaders from across different fields, and we're excited to bring them into our Long Blue Leadership conversation. Wyatt Hornsby 7:06 And we also want to share a couple of important and very exciting changes to how Long Blue Leadership will be published. Naviere Walkewicz 7:12 Yes, we are moving away from seasons, and we're shifting to biweekly, year-round release schedule. This is so you get Long Blue Leadership all the time, year round. Right to you where you are. Wyatt Hornsby 7:23 Very exciting, and that means more consistent leadership conversations. No long breaks, just ongoing dialog. Naviere Walkewicz 7:30 Absolutely you just go to longblueleadership.org to find your Long Blue Leadership conversation. So going forward, we'll publish our annual retrospective, released each December, a dedicated moment where white and I come together to reflect on the leadership lessons we heard throughout the year. Wyatt Hornsby 7:45 Very exciting, and Season Four reminded us that leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about showing up with intention and care, being humble, being approachable and putting others first. Naviere Walkewicz 7:57 We're grateful to every guest who shared their perspective and to you for being part of this incredible community. Wyatt Hornsby 8:03 And Naviere, while we're at it too, let's go ahead and thank Ted, our incredible producer of Long Blue Leadership. Naviere Walkewicz 8:09 Thanks, Ted. We appreciate you so much. John and Nate level a TOW Missile at the league's tankers with some novel solutions and evaluation of whether the league's proposed ideas will work, while discussing if the Jazz's punishment was fair. Then a look back at the 2025 Trade Deadline is a year on. Do we think the Luka trade was still a bad deal for the Mavs? How is the De'Aaron Fox trade working out for the Spurs/Kings, and Bulls? We also hit on the Jimmy Butler, Brandon Ingram, De'Andre Hunter and Kyle Kuzma trades, take a look at the rescinded Mark Williams to the Lakers deal, and also Utah acquiring Phoenix's 2031 unprotected 1st for three ostensibly worse picks.  Dunc'd On Prime is the only place to get every episode with Nate & Danny, plus every pod with John Hollinger & Nate as well! It's Ash Wednesday, the Antarctica Eclipse timeline for military action in Iran just may be coming to fruition, and I have been thinking about what I need to give up for good, not just the next forty days of Lent. It also happens to a day that I reflect on many of the things I would like to keep around forever. At 1AM this morning, it was officially 20 Years since the first time we went live at my college radio station, and so aside from all of the reels and mixed news we can do tonight I would love to leave the lines open for people's most memory-triggering questions about the last two decades of talk.
