The DMSW Podcast: Talking all things Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars
This is a SPOILER HEAVY review for Loki Season 2.I have been so excited to talk about this Disney+ show on the podcast because in my opinion it was far and away the BEST MCU project we have see brought to the streaming site so far. I was blow away by the acting performances, the music, and most of the writing and story telling they did this season. I feel like they gave Loki a FLAWLESS complete character arc, and I really appreciate the way they ended the season. It allows time to let Loki sit on the shelf (no pun intended) for awhile if he wants to go pursue other projects, and if it ends up being the last time we ever see him in the MCU I can be satisfied with that. But it also does leave the door open in a way that if he and the MCU ever feel like they are ready and want to bring him back, it will not cheapen his character arc whatsoever and I would be excited to see him play Loki in the MCU once again.Follow and Interact with the show on Instagram...@thedmswpodcastFollow and Interact with the show on Facebook...Facebook PAGE for The DMSW PodcastSend the show an email...thedmswpodcast@gmail.com

The National Toy Hall of Fame has inducted their finalist this year, but Jovial Jay and Shua pick their choices for the Enjoy Stufftopia Discontinued Toy Hall of Fame on Enjoy Stuff! We think there are some pretty cool toys that you don't see anymore that deserve their place in a museum. Join us as we pick our favorites for the Discontinued Toy Hall of Fame. News The Hall and Oates legal drama continues Marty Krofft, co-creator of some of our wacky childhood entertainment has died at 86 Waffles? Coffee Mate? Sure, why not? We found a cool spin on Back to the Future in a comic book from a few years ago Flies? Where? You'll just have to listen to find out. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua has been enjoying a new novel by John Scalzi called Starter Villain. This one is also narrated by Will Wheaton and tells the story of an man who unexpectedly inherits his uncle's super villain company. Sound weird? Weird enough to check out for sure! Jovial Jay revisited the 1981 Ray Harryhausen classic Clash of the Titans. It was a groundbreaking movie in a lot of ways and a fun watch today. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks back at the 2000 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger called The 6th Day. Arnold is faced with a clone of himself and all the discomfort that would present. Though it was very en Vogue to feature our nearest planetary neighbor back then, this one may not have entirely hit the mark. The story is a little spoon-fed, but entertaining nonetheless. Check out his article to see why. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Loki series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more. Enjoy Toys! It's the time of year when the National Toy Museum picks their Hall of Fame finalists. Once again, some iconic toys have made it into the mix. They even picked one from the Forgotten Five; a group of toys that never seem to quite make it. But here at Enjoy Stuff we believe there are some toys that are no longer around, but also deserve their moment in the spotlight. So we have set up a Discontinued Toy Hall of Fame in our town of EnjoyStufftopia. JovialJay and Shua pick some of their favorite toys from their youth that they would love to see on display. Do you have a toy that would fit in our Hall of Fame? First person that emails me with the subject line, “It belongs in a museum” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. “Movies and television is always what I wanted to do,” says Eric Martin. “I don't remember it wasn't a time it wasn't the main interest in my life, but screenwriting is something I was a little bit late too. I was a latchkey key and I viewed writing as work, something to get done to go watch movies.” “But there were a series of teachers who kept pulling me aside and said, ‘You're a writer, do you enjoy this?' It kept happening so the message finally got through to take it seriously and put in that kind of effort.” Looking back, Martin says he understood story structure just from watching so many movies. He also had a teacher teach the hero's journey to write essays. “I don't actually think about structure when I write. Use the hero's journey. Don't use it. I personally hate writing textbooks. Any book that tells you how to write is bullshit. I think you pick it up and inherently understand it. I think it's baked in even if you think you're following it. It's just there. It's part of the western storytelling ethic.” Rather than obsessing over screenwriting books, Martin would tell you to “go live some life.” He adds, “Don't try to read a bunch of things and use a theory on anything. Live some life and I think you'll understand [life] on a deeper level. I see a lot of stuff out there and it feels hollow. People who do depthful work live interesting lives.” This has led Martin to focus on “character and story.” As a screenwriter, this is always the focus, whether it's his TV movie The Other Mother, the Starz series about professional wrestling Heels, or his latest project, the newest installment of Loki for Marvel and Disney. For the second season of the Marvel series Loki, cinematographer Isaac Bauman decided to bring his own unique look to the show, especially when it came to the lighting design. Loki Season 1 DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC brought a lot of herself and her own unique look to the show. But Isaac feels that his approach to cinematography is very different from Autumn's, and he wanted to creatively stick his neck out to define his own voice for season two. During his initial interview for Loki, Isaac presented a detailed vision to directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead of how he would have shot scenes differently for season one. Once he was hired for season two, Isaac created an extremely detailed bible for the lighting and look of Loki. Season 2 is a mix of 1970's-inspired lighting and color palette, with warm browns, yellows and oranges within the TVA, shifting to cooler blues and greens with rainbow hues further down in the control room as the timelines begin to collapse. Loki Season 2 utilizes wide angles, handheld camerawork and monochromatic colors. As with season one, the sets are often full 360-degree builds, so that every possible environment has four walls and a ceiling. The lighting was also achieved with all practicals on set, with a lighting rig built into the ceiling. Isaac had to learn to work with the scenes being lit from overhead, which is not a very flattering look for the actors. He introduced a lot of handheld camera movement into season two, which would have made it challenging to have lights on the set. Instead, for a little extra light on the actors' faces, they often used a battery powered gem ball LED on the eyeline of the actors. The shoot for season two was more dynamic, as the actors were allowed to move more freely around the set, with the cameras just following and panning between the characters, using wide spherical lenses. Isaac loves shooting on a stage, because he loves being able to control all of the lighting. Isaac went to USC Film School where he met his friend, director Lee Roy Kunz, who convinced him to drop out and shoot their first feature film, A Beer Tale. He then started shooting low budget rap videos, which led to bigger music videos, which led to commercials and feature films. Growing up, he made his own video projects at home using a camcorder, but it wasn't until film school that Isaac realized that working with the camera, image and lighting was his true passion.
