Minute Forty: From Talk of Treason to Talk of Heritage Joining us sadly for the last time this week is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot, as we discuss treason with the Warriors Three and Lady Sif as well as Loki's slowly growing need to know what's going on with his tranformations. In the Fortieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We complain about the fact that we have so few great moments like this with the Warriors Three. Jessica gives us some history on the Warriors Three and Jack Kirby's character types, showing how these largely pull from a set of archetypes he used often. Did Josh Lucas want more comedy and didn't get it so didn't come back, or could he see where the treatment of Fandral and the Warriors Three was headed when he opted to not return? It speaks to what Marvel's done with characters and actors now that they largely don't want to drop out because a small role can become so much more. There's even more of Fandral, Volstagg, Hogun and Sif in the script here and it's great material, but in context of the film, it's not necessary. Still, it speaks to how great they could have been as characters if they weren't used strictly as jokes so often. Could it be that they're also upset because they know Loki is now lined up to be king? Fandral seems to realize the line between mischief and treason. Was Loki meaning to be treasonous and committing a coup d'état? Loki approaches the Casket of Ancient Winters to find out the truth. Hiddleston is terrific in this moment as he debates whether to pick the Casket up or not. It seems clear to us that he knows the truth but does this to confirm what he knows. It's almost like Odin is drawn here at this moment as well. It's clear that it's too late for Odin to tell Loki the truth here, though perhaps it would've been a better option to have been cursed and not to have been stolen after the Battle against the Jotuns. We debate the spell on Loki and how it reveals his frost giant heritage but doesn't change his size. Odin's “Stop!” was scripted as stopping the Destroyer from blasting the person picking up the Casket. We talk about how the delivery feels like there's an intensity behind it so we debate if Hopkins thought he was acting against Hiddleston here or the Destroyer. But how does the Destroyer know when the wrong person is touching the Casket? Unrelated, Odin's outfit is so beautiful and it's finally not armor! And what about those marks on frost giant Loki? When we say baby Loki, we'll have to compare markings. Last but not least, we complain some more about the blue nature of both the Casket and the Tesseract, particularly how they came out in such close proximity. From treason talk with Thor's friends to frost giant heritage arguing between Loki and Odin, we have a lot to discuss with Jessica. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Nine: From Loki's Reveal to Hogun's Suspicion Joining us in the Healing Room all week is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. We talk about Hogun the Suspicious and his suspicions. In the thirty-ninth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... It turns out Loki was paying attention to the conversation after all, not just staring at his hand with thoughts of his heritage. We debate Loki's reveal to the group here in the Healing Room. So he told the guard but it was to keep them safe. And like Thor, Loki reveals his royal heritage with the comment about flogging the guard. Hogun's healing massage of Volstagg's arm stops, which may be the sign that he's shocked. It's hard to tell with Hogun. We agree completely with Loki's comments on Thor as a terrible option for king. Why do Thor's friends seem to disagree? Are they just too close? This conversation makes us realize that without all of the happenings in this film, Thor really would've become the party Thor from What If...? show. We debate what Loki's full intentions were. Where is Loki's head in this moment? We truly see the origin story for Loki in moments like this. Loki isn't a full-on evil villain yet but we can see elements of that here now. How much is this frost giant blue element he's seeing in himself that's throwing him off in this conversation? The conversation about flogging the guard also speaks to distract his friends' attention from everything else he's saying. Loki storms out of the Healing Room and Sif, Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg debate his intentions. Each of the friends has their own reaction to Loki's reveal. Who is right? Their immediate suspicions of Loki make us wonder if Loki has ever been good at manipulating them or is only good at manipulating Thor. Or perhaps their jealousy of their friends with the royal blood shines through here? The Warriors Three and Sif seem as hot-headed as Thor, so perhaps they value this trait whereas Loki sees it as poor for leadership. Hogun's comment speaks to his supposed wisdom and plays with the concept that he doesn't speak much, but it also comes across as a huge leap in conclusions to say Loki or a master of magic could have brought the Jotuns to Asgard. The logic becomes Watsonian vs. Doylist – this suspicion of Hogun's feels like it has to be there simply so these characters are suspicious in the story. Would this scene have played still if they weren't suspicious at this moment? And to that end, how many masters of magic are there on Asgard? Is it just Loki and Frigga? But Odin uses magic too... So where is the line? Regardless, we struggle quite a bit with this leap – even if they're right – because it just seems too much a device by the writers. All in all, though, it's a debate with Loki while in the Healing Room. So much to discuss. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Thirsty-Eight: From Healthy Muscles to a Healing Massage Joining us again is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. We discuss more about thirst, Thor's attitude, how he speaks to people, and the Asgardian healing room. In the thirsty-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The thirst factor is still high as we kick off this minute with Jane still having a hard time not blatantly staring at Thor. Meanwhile, he gets ready to put the shirt on that she loaned him, only to find a Hello, My Name Is... sticker still attached. Turns out, we have another Easter egg buried in the name on that sticker – Donald Blake M.D. Marvel enjoys dropping Easter eggs in their films, which is a different perspective than the DC films use, where they largely avoid dropping them. But why? This shirt, however – does this mean Jane's had it for a long time but hasn't washed it? Or was it a recent break-up? Does the fact that this Thor fits perfectly so well imply that Jane has a type and Thor fits it perfectly? There was a point in development where the Donald Blake persona would be in the film and they were talking about Kevin McKidd playing him. Despite his hotness and Jane's (and our) thirst for him, Thor is rude. He clearly acts like royalty and treats everyone as if they're servants or commoners. Thor's comments about needing sustenance come off sounding like he's having an out of body experience. His mortal form? Could it be that he hasn't had a golden apple from Asgard in far too long and is actually feeling more mortal than he's ever felt before? Thor is hungry. Darcy is thirsty. But she and Erik share a look when Thor speaks the way he does. Clearly, they're tuned in to his crazy jabberings. We leave the thirst behind to journey to Asgard where we visit the Healing Room. It's Asgard at night! So they do flip around like a pancake in space! The striking difference between the rural and rundown look of Puente Antiguo and the opulence of Asgard stands out strong with this transition. Bo Welch's incredible production design gives so much weight to this scene. And did you know that's an enormous ram's head over the fire? We lay out what Hogun is actually doing here because it's never quite clear. Volstagg, Sif, and Fandral discuss why they shouldn't have let Thor go, but also how Thor saved them. Fandral seems the one we should be thirsty for but are we? Is there any thirst factor for him sitting here with his vest on and no shirt underneath? They know now that a guard told Odin where they were going but there still seems some debate if their journey was a smart idea or not. Loki seems to only be focused on the fact that his hand had turned blue earlier. With all his planning, Loki clearly struggles with this new information. Again, the opulence here – both in the production design and in the costumes – stands out as something to pay attention to. Meanwhile, in the MCU... We're still on June 10th and we talk a bit about what's happening in both The Incredible Hulk and in Iron Man 2. It's a conversation about hot bodies and the thirst that goes along with them, royal attitudes and how people react to them, and discussions in the healing room. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Seven: From Stan the Man to Bare-Chested Thor Joining us to discuss Stan Lee as well as Thor's perfect body is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. In the thirty-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... How strong does that chain have to be to rip the bed of a Dodge pickup truck right off the frame? Or is it that the truck itself was not made well? In a minute of perfect bodies, this truck proves it does not have the perfect body. If they chipped the rock away from under Mjølnir, would they be able to pull it away? Look! It's Stan Lee in his cameo! Turns out, Stan the Man is driving the pickup that gets torn apart. It's been disproved that Stan's one of the Watchers now that What If...? has been released, but we explore what he would be up to if he were the Watcher during this crossover period between The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and this film. Agent Coulson finally arrives. And it looks a bit familiar as we've seen a bit of this at the end of Iron Man 2. He's very stoic as the SHIELD agent, and as his first foray outside of the Iron Man films, it really feels like he's starting to step into his own here. But he doesn't have Thor's perfect body. They do make him feel more menacing though. Is that because for this film, they're meant to feel more of a threat during the continuing sequences with Mjølnir? This moment again speaks so well about what Kevin Feige had been setting up with this crossover universe that becomes the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We talk about a few of the other actors playing townies at the crater as well. Back at Smith Motors in Jane's workshop, and we find Thor shirtless, showing off his perfect body. Thirsty, anyone? Thor is putting on clothes and we find him with jeans on. And that's it. Clearly, Hemsworth is happy to show off his body here because those months in the gym seriously paid off. Jessica wanted to discuss these minutes in particular because of the concept of thirst and how these films have subverted a bit of the trope of featuring women in moments simply included for thirsty male viewers by featuring these super men in super shape usually topless to satisfy fans. We discuss the male gaze versus the female gaze a bit. We also discuss the challenge of a male director filming the female gaze. Does that negate it? Though perhaps that's why it's so important to have Darcy and Jane both staring at Thor's perfect body. Darcy's apology/non-apology to Thor about tasing him feels like classic Darcy. Jane does a great job of averting her eyes, oh Lord. Thor fiddles with the computer mouse and Jane stops him. And she realizes how close she is to that perfect bod. And we realize just how much taller he is than she. But while Thor's body may be the perfect body, that damn bleached eyebrow thing and terrible wig. They almost make his entire face disappear. Oh, and we haven't even mentioned the other beautiful thing to look at – those incredible New Mexico vistas through the enormous windows of Smith Motors. Wow, what a beautiful part of the world. We've got Stan Lee's cameo as well as a whole conversation about the thirst everyone has after seeing Hemsworth look the way he looks. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Six: From Empty Bed in a County Hospital to Chained Hammer in an Impact Crater We're digging deep into the movie as well as the impact crater in the thirty-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Before we get back to Mjølnir's impact crater, we return to the County Hospital. Even the god's-eye view shots that Branagh uses in this film end up as dutch angles. They're so great! Jane really wants to find Thor specifically for the science. He's evidence. He can tell her all about what it was like in that event. They really focus on Jane and her science in this film. And it works well. Thor is hot, and for a lot of people that's why they'd return to him but we talk about how there's an entirely possible reaction from Jane that it's really all about science here. Even if he wasn't hot but was gross with a beard down to his knees, she'd likely want to talk to him. Erik really seems to be getting a better sense of what's really going on. He's a scientist also, but brings the older wisdom. But is Erik starting to get a sense that this person may be somebody from his storybook tales? At least Erik is trying to keep everyone alive. Darcy is fine tracking him down, but apparently ready to tase him again. But why does she cock her taser like a gun? They don't work that way. First she forces Darcy to drive into an atmospheric disturbance, then hit Thor, and now back into Thor. Jane clearly shouldn't drive. Jane backs up, and even though we can see Thor walking through the side windows, Jane apparently can't and backs into him. To be fair, she's rather worked up so maybe isn't paying attention that well. But if Thor had his powers, would he dent the Pinzgauer? It's a lot of mass... would it at least push Thor back a bit or knock him over? In the script, this is when he finally realizes where he was. Oh – and Dawn the admissions nurse makes an appearance in the script again. It's so much better than her earlier moment. Too bad we get the bad spelling/slow typer version of Dawn instead of this scripted version. Meanwhile, back at Mjølnir's Impact Crater... Apparently, JMS told everyone in the area and they told all their friends because there are now several dozen people at the impact crater and they're having a great time. One unnamed guy – we'll call him Grilling Townie – has his popup tent and is busy grilling hot dogs. That means it's a serious party! But where the heck is he set up? We never see him again. Billy Swan's “I Can Help” plays throughout this scene. We dig in a bit on him and his career, including his daughters Planet and Sierra. We talk about Pete played by Matt Battaglia and Jake, aka Drunk Townie, played by Joel McCrary. They ham it up quite a bit as they try pulling Mjølnir from its spot but it won't budge. And this is, of course, free entertainment, so it's obviously something all these townies want to be at. But there's a bicycle there. That's one heck of a bike ride to get here! And did we mention everybody is dressed for winter weather, even though this takes place on June 1st according to the MCU's official timeline? Regardless, the townies finally come up with a plan to pull Mjølnir free with a chain wrapped around a hitch in the back of a pickup truck. But whose truck could it be? And did we mention how much Matthew loves JMS's Babylon 5? And he's still out here watching what's going on. Jane, Erik, and Darcy find Thor and the rural New Mexicans try to free Mjølnir at the Impact Crater. So much to talk about! Tune in! Stay tuned after the credits for a few minutes of Legends Of S.H.I.E.L.D. bonus audio.   Aki:   Innovative Game Designer / Podcaster Twitter: @akinomii_art (https://twitter.com/akinomii_art) Linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/akinomii   THIS TIME ON LEGENDS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.:   Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) Weekly Marvel News   SHANG CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS [4:36]   Shang Chi and the Legend Of The Ten Rings   Produced By: Kevin Feige https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0270559/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr4#producer 80 Production Credits Starting with X-Men in 2000 79 are Marvel Comics Based properties, One is an upcoming Star Wars Untitled Project And is currently still THE man in charge of the Marvel Studios Future Projects include: Hawkeye TV Event (2021) Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) She-Hulk TV Series (2022) Ms. Marvel TV Series (2022) Moon Knight TV Series (2022) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) The Marvels (2023) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) I Am Groot TV Series (???) WorldWide:   San Francisco Bus Driver Critiques Shang Chi and the Ten Rings Bus Fight Scene https://twitter.com/that_mc/status/1459613123590066180?s=20 Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Finally watching Shang-Chi, here as a bus operator to rate the SFT transit factors of The Bus Scene:   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc SFT (San Francisco Transit?) is using a New Flyer D60 articulated 60 foot motor coach for the 1 California.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc But the bus is headed south on Noe at 21st St, they are seriously off route!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I like these brushed steel and green cushion seats, they look nicer and harder to clean than muni's     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc That's a real ad  for the jazz and blues festical you can find in muni buses     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc As a bus operator, this is the moment I pop my parking brake and open the doors.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This would Definitely Happen     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Energy sword arm man cuts through the floor of the articulating section. Also wears sensible boots for working on a bus!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This cuts through an air hose under the bus!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Our bus operator, played by Michael-Anthony Taylor, discovers his service brake isn't working. He's mashing on the treadle (pedal) and not stopping. That's terrible! And he's wearing earphones. That's terrible. He definitely could be charged with an avoidable incident by SFT.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc He should be reaching for the Parking and Emergency Brake on his left control panel:     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Cap number 8964 would be a part time operator at muni, but SFT might have a different scheme?     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Now we are heading west on California at Mason St, and this is a serious hill. There could very well be cable cars in the way. Not to mention this has been a 40 minute bus ride from 21st and Noe, minimum.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Quick digression on how Air Brakes work. Energy sword arm man cut the brake lines, which would let all the air out of the system. When this happens, a backup, mechanical brake called the Spring Brake activates.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc The spring brake held open by air pressure. If there is no pressure, the brake is applied, and the wheels will not turn. Air brakes have a warning, that is audible as a very loud, continuous buzzer, whenever the air pressure drops below a certain threshold.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc A bus operator will stop the bus when this low air pressure warning goes off, because if the air brakes keep loosing pressure, the spring brakes WILL activate, and the bus is going to stop very very suddenly.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Bus operators don't want to stop very hard because that's how you get Falls On Board.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc When bus operators want to know what's going on inside our passenger area, we look in the mirror up top, not over our shoulder     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This helps us keep our attention on steering the bus, to avoid cars that will definitely make illegal left turns in front of us all day every day. Powell and California.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc OUCH     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Operator wasn't even wearing his seat belt! Workmans Comp not going to cover this. Also: Fall on Board.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This is top quality bus driving. Also get the line "Every time I try to drive a bus I get yelled at" which a) lol and b) that's just being a bus operator. We get yelled at whenever we try to drive a bus too.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I'm going to take this part by part. First of all, I want to get into the operators seat this easily just once in my entire life.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This space isn't empty, there's a big compartment with computers and electronics in there.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Operators lunch!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Seat Belt, should have been fastened!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This is the parking and emergency brake. This is what the operator should have pulled way back when Shang-chi threw the first punch. If you are ever in a situation where you are unexpectedly in a run away bus and need to stop it, this yellow handle is the thing to grab.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Some operators really do sit with the seat all the way down and the wheel up and forward, but I find this very uncomfortable, like driving with your chin. When a bus operator takes over a bus, they immediately start by adjusting the seat to their preference.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Shang-Chi knows how to check on the passengers!     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Every bus has a fire extinguisher, and we check every day before we pull out of the yard. It is intended for exactly these situations.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Every bus operator cheers when the scooters get mashed to shreds.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I think this is more or less how an articulated section would react. I don't actually operate articulated motor coaches, so IDK     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This is Stockton at Bush, on top of the Stockton Street Tunnel.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I have no idea if this is what's down there.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc The rear view mirrors are bus operators best friends. We cannot safely turn the bus if they aren't adjusted properly. I would take a moment to check and make sure they are how I like them after this.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This is how everyone asks to be let into the bus when we aren't at a stop. Too real.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I'm impressed that she knew how to operate the door lever. When the doors are open, an interlock activates that prevents the bus from moving. This would also have been an option to try for an out of control bus. Also, that's where you keep your coffee canteen, true facts.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc DON'T LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER WHILE DRIVING! The hazards are ahead of you. Aim High in Steering, everyone.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Now we are heading into the Stockton Street tunnel. This is MC Escher's Hill, apparently.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I Laughed. So. Hard. at the stop request gag. Saw it coming from miles away OMG. On Muni, someone would absolutely have used this within 20 seconds of the start of the fight.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc We are finally coming to a stop at Larkin and North Point. Quite a ways to warp from Union Square IMO.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc This is the look I give passengers when I stopped too far from the curb. Good bus stops are hard. I hope you enjoyed my thread as much as I enjoyed this scene.     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Unfortunately I think this guy isn't going to keep his job as a bus operator, though. I'm glad he's ok, that was a nasty knock he took. Let's hope he lands on his feet. Maybe he'll drive charters?     Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc I need to add a coda to this thread. First of all, amazing to see it get so much attention. I did not expect this. I guess this is where I make a soundcloud plug?   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc But really I just want you to support public transport by riding the bus more and driving a personal car less. Support policies that fund public transport, and support policies that prioritize people over parking spots.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc And thank your operator when you get off the bus. Every "Thank you" makes our day on the road a little better. I'm still a rookie operator, new to the job, but it make a difference to me.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Also mad props to all the talented people involved in bringing this scene to the screen: @SimuLiu and @awkwafina and Michael-Anthony Taylor and @big9nasty (energy sword arm man, or razorfist, I learned)   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc Brad Allan and Andy Cheng, choreographers for the scene, and the stunt performers, and the stunt driver (Kial Butler, Andrea Berchtold, and Cameron Ambridge have stunt driver credits in the film)   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc And also the special effects teams that put in I am sure untold hours to bring this scene to life. Huge congratulations and thanks to those who brought us this entertainment.   Mack, yes, That Mack @that_mc And THANK YOU each and every one for riding Muni.   Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfVOs4VSpmA Trailer confirms some villains   OUTRO [60:12]   Lauren, Michelle and SP love to hear back from you about how you would rate the episode we just discussed, your top 5 Marvel character lists, your science of Marvel questions, who would you pick in an all-female Avenger team, or which Marvel male you would like to see shirtless. The Loki series from Marvel Studios is pretty fantastic, but what can two mental health nerds discover hidden within its storyline? Turns out it is quite a bit. We discuss redemption, narcissism, self-loathing, healing, dysfunctional relationships, fear, and probably some other stuff.  Friend of the show Sharon Blady is here to talk about insights into these psychological elements of Loki. Minute Thirty-Five: From a Missing Constellation to a Missing Patient ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard joins us for the last time to discuss Jane, Erik and Darcy realizing that Thor is basically a spaceman, as well as Thor's escape from the hospital. In the thirty-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Jane and Erik continue their conversation about how our constellations are missing and seem to have been replaced with different constellations. They're getting closer – but aren't there quite yet – to realizing that Thor is a spaceman. Darcy calls them over to point out the obvious-to-us but apparently-not-obvious-to-them-until-just-this-moment shape of a man in the atmospheric disturbance. Jane realizes finally that the man they hit with the Pinzgauer is, in fact, a spaceman. But how do they get photos of the stars during the atmospheric disturbance? It's awfully bright. Regardless, we love how Branagh and his editors chose to edit from the shot of the shape of a man in the sky to the overhead shot of Thor strapped to the bed. Meanwhile, back with the other spaceman and his wife in Asgard. Odin fumes on his balcony. Frigga enters, upset that Odin's banished her son. She's Frigga'n furious. Again, Anthony Hopkins just rules in this role. Rene Russo delivers a great accent that doesn't distract at all. Their age difference does distract a bit though. We look at Odin's armor. He only has four discs on his. Does that change our thoughts about these as rankings? Odin says Thor pushed them to the brink of war. Was he not there when Laufey pretty much said war has begun? And Frigga references mortals again. So are they immortal? This scene largely feels superfluous so we're glad they cut it. Plus, it wouldn't allow for the fantastic transition from the last scene to the next one. And we now find our spaceman tied to a hospital bed. Did you notice the red crocs at the end of his bed? Chris Hemsworth handles his bewilderment at his lack of strength perfectly. This is why he's perfect for this role. But damn those eyebrows! They practically disappear on his face in this location! #theeyebrowcut. We want it, Feige! Thor's yellow wristband says he's a fall risk. Would something else have made more sense? We couldn't figure out the information on his wristband other than his name. Maybe his age? Are they estimating him to be 38 years old? Thor can't break out so he slips his hand out. This feels like a move he would have pulled from his brother Loki. WWLD? Gotta get that spaceman! Jane, Erik and Darcy run back into the hospital to find Thor, now that they know he's essentially a spaceman. Nurse Rob and Nurse Terry talk to security about what happened the night before. Erik realizes what this means and they put it in high gear. Unfortunately, all they find is an empty hospital bed. We have a great chat about Jane's spaceman in this minute. Tune in! Thor 034: Where Are All the Residents of Puente Antiguo?

Marvel Movie Minute

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2021 36:52

Minute Thirty-Four: From a Cameo to a Day Off ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard digs around in the impact crater with us in this minute as we talk about wormholes and Puente Antiguo. In the thirty-fourth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The townie who finds the impact crater turns out to be none other than J. Michael Straczynski. The connections are strong with this one as they relate to the Thor comics, Babylon 5, and more. We also talk about the nature of comic book creator cameos and how it's nice to see. (We don't get into the issues that these creators are having with Marvel over their creator rights, which is a huge topic for another day.) He runs down to the base of the impact crater and finds Mjølnir embedded in what looks like a block of cement. We debate the look of this prop because on the one hand, it allows the people interacting with it to really struggle but on the other hand, it looks manmade, not like something that would happen naturally from impact. To that end, it does allow for comparisons with the sword in the stone and the fact that no one can pull it free. But then we also now can judge each of these people trying to lift Mjølnir. Apparently, this town ain't worthy. As Straczynski tries to lift Mjølnir, the sound design kicks in with that sound we've come to know and love that we hear when Thor wields the hammer. But is it diagetic? Is this townie hearing the ringing sound too? We leave our time with the townie as he gives us a little ‘huh,' which is played so well. Kudos, Straczynski! Welcome to Puente Antiguo. Finally. As we bid adieu to the townie and Mjølnir for now, we find ourselves in the small town of Puente Antiguo, which means ‘old bridge' in Spanish. Turns out, they named it this because of how it works as a reflective opposite of Asgard. They built this town of Puente Antiguo at the Cerro Pelon Ranch, aka Cooks Ranch Filming Studio in Galisteo, NM. Turns out Tom Ford owns it and if you're on the market for your own movie ranch, you can buy it from him right now! The elevation of Puente Antiguo matches that of Galisteo. That doesn't track at all based on the mileage from Albuquerque we saw in the One-Shot A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer. The population of Puente Antiguo doesn't make sense at all either. It's over 2000 people which, for this small a town, makes no sense. Even Galisteo only has a population just over 200 people. Where do all these people live? Were they just trying to make it seem like more lives were in danger here in Puente Antiguo when the Destroyer arrives? Hey, they've got at least one big chain! The town is big enough to have a 7-11, but it really feels like a Flying J would make more sense. Then again, why would people drive here? It feels so isolated. We point out the newsstand, the liquor store, and a very prominent billboard advertising the great state of New Mexico while also dropping another comic reference. And of course Smith Motors stands at the end of the main drag, essentially filling in for Valaskjalf in this small town. It's a fantastic design as a defunct car dealership here in Puente Antiguo with a star on top. We love it! The billboard looks like some information has been redacted. Was that left accidentally as something they forgot to clean up? Or was it intentional and meant to be something perhaps graffitied on there? Jane, Erik and Darcy busy themselves in Smith Motors at the end of Puente Antiguo's main street. We join them here where clearly Jane has made her temporary workspace. But is that a crew person in a hammock we see in the next building over? Darcy works overtime in this scene as our audience surrogate because Jane and Erik talk about the possibility of an Einstein-Rosen Bridge, or a wormhole. Erik explains to her what that means, so he's essentially explaining it to us. Are superhero films science fiction? Or are they their own genre that happen to be pulling science fiction elements in to enhance the story? The dialogue here feels like the screenwriters had some scientific conversations with people who understand this stuff far better than we do to make sure it sounded somewhat accurate and possible. We talk about impact craters, Straczynski, Puente Antiguo, Einstein-Rosen Bridges, and more in this minute. Tune in! Thor 033: How Much Damage Does Thor Do to the Triage Bay?

Marvel Movie Minute

Minute Thirty-Three: From Triage to Townie ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard from the MCU: Location Scout joins us again to discuss Thor destroying the Triage Bay and a townie discovering Mjølnir's impact crater. In the thirty-third minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Nurse Terry kicks things off as he tries to draw blood from Thor. Thor will have none of it and proceeds to tear the Triage Bay apart, along with all the nurses, orderlies, security guards, and patients as well. Who styled Thor's hair so perfectly? Terry Dale Parks plays Nurse Terry. We run through the IMDb Game with him. Great face here, particularly from that worm's eye view shot we get. Parks likely lives and works in New Mexico, and we bet is not a utility stunt player as he pretty much avoids the action and stays at the back of the Triage Bay while Thor takes on the medical staff. We love Nurse Terry, but Nurse Rob just might be working for the Time-Keepers. Rob Mars just may be one of our new favorite stunt workers. He not only works hard to tackle Thor in this scene but he plays Ray Stevenson's stunt double as Volstagg in the film! That means we likely saw him already on Jotunheim. Rob has been a utility stunt player in so many of the MCU films but has also performed in small roles in some of the films and TV shows that we've seen him enough times to be convinced he perhaps works for the Time-Keepers. Thor doesn't have his powers but he's still powerful as he tears the Triage Bay apart. Until he's taken down with the same gag. We struggle with picturing Thor with no strength considering the body he has. Muscles and fighter tactics are still part of his everyday life. Odin only stripped his Asgardian powers from him after all. Considering the damage during this fight, we believe more strongly that this is a soundstage they've built for this fight. Plus, it likely made it easier for them when they did the original single long shot of the fight before it was cut down for the edit. Did you catch Thor's reference to his comic book title? He nearly calls himself ‘The Mighty Thor.' Chris Hemsworth plays the dumb oaf so well here. He also slides down glass like no one else in the MCU. Why does it work so well to have Thor taken down using essentially the same gag we just saw a few minutes ago? We revel in how well this still works. To that end, if you count him getting hit in the parking lot in a few minutes, they're doing their comedy in threes which has always been known to work. Thor calls them savages and demands healing stones in the extended version of this scene. Branagh's decision makes sense as perhaps in a world of super-science, healing stones seem too magical. We leave the Triage Bay and join a townie on a drive to an impact crater. As Thor gets tranqed in the Triage Bay, we leave him to follow a townie in a red Dodge pickup driving over a rise where we see an impact crater. We can tell that this is where Mjølnir landed, but our townie either heard it the night before and investigates or just happens upon it here. Who knows which? Why does he drive all the way around to the far side of it though? It's not really clear. We discuss a bit about how this could've been CG but with all the work that's going to happen here in the next act of the film, we figure it was actually dug out to look this way. Not only does this location not look like the same flat area Jane and her team were driving on last night, but also it turns out it wasn't even the same state where they filmed. Jane, Erik and Darcy crashed into Thor in New Mexico. They filmed this impact crater, while meant to be close by, in the Santa Clarita valley in California. To that end, did Odin specifically select this place for Mjølnir to land? Perhaps he wanted it close enough to Thor so he can find it but not too close? Or as we surmised a few minutes ago, Mjølnir perhaps slipped out of the Bifrost on its way down. From destroying the Triage Bay and everyone in it to a mysterious townie finding Mjølnir's impact crater, we fill this conversation with all sorts of juicy tidbits. Tune in! Turns out Thor is more two-faced than Loki as Noah Syndergaard double crossed the Amazin's and skipped town for California. The one time "ace-in-waiting" never fully lived up to anyone's lofty expectations, but we were hopeful for a comeback with the qualifying offer. There were no guarantees that he would take it, but based on his comments and social media posts we thought it was a foregone conclusion. Turns out he wanted to let us down one last time on his way out the door, thus closing the book on the of the Mets' arsenal of aces that we thought would lead us to multiple championships way back in 2015. Instead, like all who have come before him, he parts ways from Flushing with a sour taste in his mouth. The guys break down what Syndergaard meant to the team, his impact on the fans, the larger-than-life persona off the field with little results on it and where the hell we go from here. Make no mistakes about it, this news is shocking. Not because we thought we could rely on him long-term, but because now the Mets have some MASSIVE HOLES to fill in the rotation. Good thing our new GM is on the way? The Mets landed a GM and it ended up being a last resort instead of a first option. The newest general manager of the New York Metropolitans is Billy Eppler. Billy was meant to grab the headlines today and set the fanbase's minds at ease, but instead we're dealing with the Noah fallout. When one fire is put out, the next sparks up. Eppler received a terrible rap while with the Angels and gives fans reason to worry as he was seen as wasting the prime of Trout's career, however, he is a New York guy who rose quickly in the Yankees' ranks before heading west. He's described as a bright young leader who was served a raw deal by the Halos, but whether or not that's true is anyone's guess. Only time will tell on whether Billy Boy is our guy, but one thing's for certain, we gotta believe that he's just a stepping stone to greater things ahead.

Minute Thirty-Two: From Tasers to Triage Back with us to discuss Darcy's Taser and Kat Dennings' awesomeness, plus a sweet but ditsy admissions nurse, is ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard from MCU: Location Scout. In the thirty-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor tries to figure out what Realm he's in, but he goes with Alfheim and Nornheim first, neither of which is populated with human-looking beings. Why start with those? This raises an interesting question for us – are we meant to believe that this is Thor's first time to Midgard? Based on conversations he has in later films, it's clear he's been to other Realms but perhaps not here? Is this how myths perpetuate? The Asgardians came down in 965 A.D. and then not since, leaving the stories to get passed down to create those myths? And it certainly seems more logical now for them to have cut the representatives from the Nine Realms from Thor's coronation scene. That would have raised so many more questions. Darcy pulls out her taser and she's not afraid to use it. It makes total sense to us that Darcy carries a taser. Which kind of taser is this? There are a good number of them, and the kind with the wires that hit the victim like this? They're not just for police. Thor's reaction to Darcy's taser shows that he still has no idea he has no powers anymore. This is something he'll have to learn the hard way over the next few minutes. Darcy's reaction to Erik and Jane after she's tased Thor is classic. “What? He was freaking me out!” Such classic Darcy. Jane's complete and utter shock leaves her with her jaw practically on the ground. It's a great moment if you catch it. Jane decides to join them. But not until they've loaded the post-tasered Thor into her Pinzgauer. It's a bit odd because in the last scene, she told them to go and that she would stay. There's a scripted line that Erik has telling Jane that he won't leave her behind in the desert at night. Which is smart. Did they need that? Maybe not. But it does seem a bit like a change of heart on Jane's part. What's funny is that she doesn't help them at all get the post-tasered Thor into the Pinzgauer. It's Hammer Time! As they drive away, we see Mjølnir fall from the sky. But the Bifrost doesn't act the same way as it comes down. Why is that? Perhaps Mjølnir fell out of the Bifrost on its way down? Another reason it ends up in a different spot? It's hard to be sure. We debate about why they don't turn when it comes through the sky because it's quite the site. Maybe it's because they're looking forward, not back, as they drive. To that end, we describe Mjølnir as a gutter ball. Odin didn't get quite the right spin on it as he sent it into the Bifrost and so as it got close to Midgard, it landed in the gutter. Off to the County Hospital! Having shot Thor with the taser, they decide to take him to the hospital. As it turns out, this location is one that Jay found for his site and was the first person to pinpoint it online. It's actually a government building called the Toney Anaya Building in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This hospital looks particularly great with Branagh's and his cinematographer's dutch angles. It has a great comic book look but also allows for more of the location to show up. We see the hosed-down parking lot as they pull in with their Pinzgauer. We talked about this filmmaking technique the last few seasons and see they're still using it here. Let's talk about Dawn the Admissions Nurse. Before we get to Dawn, just another note about how much we love Darcy. Her “Yes I did,” line about having shot Thor with the taser is so perfect here, and it still allows her to have a unique character. We really want the Wu and Darcy show now. And all of this really started with Agent Coulson back in Iron Man. Juliet Lopez plays Dawn the Admissions Nurse. No fault of hers, but why did they go this ditzy angle? It makes so much sense why they cut the scene down so drastically. Perhaps they wanted to show this hospital dealing with so many people from rural New Mexico to be a place populated by employees who weren't that smart? We do play the IMDb game with Juliet to see what they list as what she's known for. One of them is Breaking Bad. Makes sense for New Mexico. We end with Nurse Terry preparing to draw blood from Thor. We don't see much here. Just a hint, but we find it intriguing that Branagh chose to film this from Thor's POV as he comes to and finds himself in the hospital. Thor gets tasered and taken to a hospital. it's a busy minute and ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard is here to chat about all of it with us. Tune in! Minute Thirty-One: From Post-Collision to Hospital Decision We have a great guest joining us to discuss a seemingly drunk Thor and his bleached eyebrows, the runes on the ground, and the Rom-Com nature of Thor's time on Earth. It's ‘Jovial' Jay Shepard from MCU: Location Scout! In the thirty-first minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Revisiting the crash may have been compressed, but the time with Thor isn't. In fact, we get more of it and it's better lit. And that's quite the look that Thor and Jane share. Maybe she's just staring at his eyebrows? We're ready for the #theeyebrowcut, Feige! But seriously, this look is about 14 seconds of this minute with just the two of them starting into each other's eyes, not to mention the six seconds before that when Jane's looking at the unconscious Thor. Jane's vehicle is a Pinzgauer. It doesn't have bleached eyebrows. We dig into Jane's Pinzgauer a bit. These are great Austrian high-clearance vehicles often used by the military. This is likely a 1971 and has seriously been retrofit by Jane for her scientific use. Why hasn't this inspired people to modify their own Pinzgauers to take to various ComiCons and the like? Darcy is just the best. She doesn't have bleached eyebrows. She's easily one of our favorite things in this movie. Every line she has here is comic gold. She plays the audience surrogate so perfectly. Whether it's offering CPR to the ridiculously hot guy passed out on the ground in a rune circle, or throwing her offhand comments at him about how she can tell he's hammered, Kat Dennings delivers her lines to a T. We love how the screenwriters here and throughout the MCU work to develop these side characters into characters we'd like to see continue. Darcy was such a pleasant surprise in WandaVision and we certainly hope we get more of her. Now this is a Shakespearean love story. Neither Romeo nor Juliet had bleached eyebrows. The heightened drama we have between these two people is so big and over the top that it's hard not to go back to comparing it to the Bard. And to a certain extent, it's a Rom-Com. This is a great meet cute we have here with Jane hitting Thor with her Pinzgauer. Jane even has the stereotypical quirky best friend in Darcy. Well, she's her intern, but it's the equivalent. Thor also is in the ‘fish out of water' story, something else which can very much be part of that Rom-Com. Thor passes out and the connection is lost. Jane wonders where he's from and then she notices the circle of runes on the ground. They each have their own motivation. And I bet those bleached eyebrows have their own motivation, though I wouldn't want to know what it is. Jane's science-mind goes immediately to the science and studying these runes. Erik has largely seemed confused pretty much since he joined Jane and Darcy. Could that be because he's having flashbacks to stories from his childhood? Thor likely is dazed because he's lost his powers and was just hit by a car, likely hurting him more than he's been hurt before. To that end, what's the history of people in history being cast out of their own society? Surely, it was a lot more involved. Thor's banishment happens so suddenly that it's likely he is still just beginning to process everything. From the Pinzgauer to Thor's drunken wandering and mumbling, it's a great minute to discuss with Jay. Tune in! At the time, Marvel Studios said Wright's injury would ultimately not impact the shooting schedule of the film.   After the injury, Wright left for London, where the star has been since, while the production shot around her character, Shuri, the sister of Black Panther T'Challa. Wright's Shuri became a fan-favorite breakout in the 2018 blockbuster, which grossed $1.3 billion and won three Oscars. When star Chadwick Boseman died from cancer in August 2020, the character was elevated as the lead of the sequel.   Wakanda Forever had been filming mostly in Atlanta for the last two months. Director Ryan Coogler is said to have shot all footage that his crew is able to without Wright.   Sources say the production is taking the hiatus to reconfigure the shoot to get things back on track for an early 2022 restart. The shutdown is expected to begin the week of Thanksgiving.   “Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work early 2022,” a representative for Wright said in a statement to THR. “Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”   Marvel already pushed back the release of Wakanda Forever in October, moving it from July 8, 2022, to Nov. 11, 2022. At this time, insiders say, that new release date remains intact   [10:11] Hollywood Studio Projects Get Stricter About COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/hollywood-studio-projects-get-stricter-about-covid-19-vaccine-mandates-1235045153/ https://www.cbr.com/black-panther-2-letitia-wright-unvaxxed-delay-filming/ Logistical challenges await for studios that are working with stars who haven't gotten the shot. Disney's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Letitia Wright — who portrays the lead Shuri, the sister of Black Panther T'Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) — is not vaccinated, sources say. After sustaining an on-set injury in August, the Guyanese-born British actress went home to London.   Now, a return to the U.S. for a possible shoot in Atlanta, where Wakanda Forever is based, could be an issue. On Nov. 8, the CDC implemented rules that require all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers to the U.S. be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination status before boarding a plane. Wright is not a U.S. citizen. Disney declined to comment.   Wright's U.K. rep pointed to a statement issued Nov. 5 to THR regarding the actress' injury, prompting a shutdown of production that will begin the week of Thanksgiving (director Ryan Coogler is said to have filmed everything he can without her). South Korea — where it scored the top opening of the pandemic era for a Western film — led with $14.1 million, followed by the U.K. ($7.1 million), France $6.7 million, Mexico ($5.7 million) and Australia ($5 million). Disney estimates that in like-for-like markets, Zhao's film is pacing 76 percent ahead of Shang-Chi and 26 percent ahead of Black Widow.   Heading into the weekend, Disney and Marvel Studios were hopeful that Eternals would hit $75 million in North America.   At the end of the summer, Shang-Chi opened to a dazzling $94.7 million domestically over the four-day Labor Day weekend, including $75.4 million for the three days Friday-Sunday. Black Widow opened to $80.4 million in late spring even though it was also available in the home via Disney+ Premier Access.   Eternals received a B CinemaScore. The previous lowest was the first Thor (B+), while the rest have earned a variation of an A. Similar to the CinemaScore grade, Eternals presently has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score — 49 percent — of any MCU offering.   Eternals is the third entry in Marvel's Phase Four. The film stars a diverse ensemble cast, including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie. [17:26] Disney Removes Eternals Sex Scenes In International Markets https://thedirect.com/article/eternals-disney-sexy-censor-removal-international-release https://deadline.com/2021/11/eternals-banned-saudi-arabia-qatar-kuwait-bahrain-oman-1234867992/     Another first for the project is its introduction of sex scenes within the MCU . Chloé Zhao has spoken on this movie having the first true love story of the franchise , and that is evident in Ikaris and Sersi's late-night escapade in the Babylonian desert.   This carnal outing, along with Phastos' sexuality, has gotten the film in some hot water internationally. Eternals has been banned in certain markets because of this material with Disney denying requests to censor the project. Well, it seems an edited version of the film will see the light of day in some markets, but not others.   According to Deadline , an edited version of Eternals will release in various middle eastern markets like Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. This censored cut will remove any instances of intimacy, whether they be hetero or gay. This practice is common in these markets.   While it is a bummer that Disney has to edit the film to work in some markets, it is not as bad as it seems. Some will look at this headline, see it as the House of Mouse caving into a certain part of the world, and take to their Twitter accounts. But that isn't necessarily the case here.   Marvel Studios has already said it will not bend to a few requests of extreme censorship on the project. In places like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman, the studio was asked to make further cuts not only pertaining to the intimacy shown in the film, thus those nations were not issued distribution certificates.   Other middle eastern countries like Kuwait and Qatar have problems with depictions of prophets, gods, and other theological beings, so that is the reason the film will not be playing there.   Disney+   [20:38] Marvel Cinematic Universe Titles Arrive on Disney+ in IMAX's Expanded Aspect Ratio https://www.marvel.com/articles/movies/imax-expanded-aspect-ratio-mcu-disney-plus Want MORE out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? That's about to come true as beginning November 12 — which also happens to be Disney+ Day — fans will be able to stream some of their favorite Marvel titles in IMAX's Expanded Aspect Ratio at home with IMAX Enhanced on Disney+.    IMAX's Expanded Aspect Ratio is 1:90:1, which offers up to 26% more picture for select sequences – meaning more of the action is visible on screen, just as the filmmakers intended. In the future, the collaboration will deliver even more enhanced audio and visual technology to Disney+, including immersive IMAX signature sound by DTS.   The 13 titles available at launch include: The Disney+ premiere of Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings on November 12th as well as other fan-favorite MCU movies like  Iron Man Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Captain America: Civil War Doctor Strange Thor: Ragnarok Black Panther Avengers: Infinity War Ant-Man and The Wasp Captain Marvel Avengers: Endgame And Black Widow (content availability varies by region)   [24:45] Hawkeye: Marvel's unexpected, absurd Christmas show Hawkeye Doesn't Ignore Clint's Dark Actions During the Blip https://www.gamesradar.com/hawkeye-marvel-disney-plus-show-interview-director/ https://www.cbr.com/hawkeye-ronin-dark-side/ By Tara Bennett  One of those things being Barton's murderous past as the vigilante Ronin who went on a rampage after his whole family was blipped by Thanos. In other words, both shows will hit the streaming service sometime next year between October and December, inclusive.   One of many Disney+ original series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ms. Marvel stars Iman Vellani as the Marvel Comics superhero Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and is slated to run for six episodes. Vellani will reprise her role as Kamala Khan opposite Brie Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau in the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Marvels, which is scheduled for release on Feb. 17, 2023. The Marvels serves as both a continuation of the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series and a sequel to the 2019 Larson-led film Captain Marvel.   In addition to Vellani, Ms. Marvel stars Aramis Knight as Kareem/Red Dagger, Saagar Shaikh as Amir Khan, Rish Shah as Kamran, Matt Lintz as Bruno Carrelli, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan and Laurel Marsden as Zoe Zimmer. Additionally, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, Nimra Bucha, Alyy Khan and Alysia Reiner have been cast in undisclosed roles. Thor 030: What's Loki Thinking When Thor Gets Cast Out?

Marvel Movie Minute

Minute Thirty: From Asgard to Midgard This is our last day of individual guests for each day, but it's a great way to finish it off as we have Justin Jaeger from TruStory FM's Trailer Rewind podcast to talk with us about Thor's banishment from Asgard to Midgard. In the thirtieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The jerk finally realizes he's been a jerk. This is really a big comeuppance for Thor here. Once again, the conversation turns back to Thor's eyebrows. They're really bad here. It was great to be on Jotunheim for a while where his eyebrows actually had more of a semblance of normalcy. There have been quite a range of emotions going across Thor's face in the last few minutes. We love how shocked and vulnerable he suddenly looks here. It's clear he never had any idea there might be consequences for this. And that's after bringing up again that Sif told him this was forbidden. Is it Frigga who had spoiled him too much? We certainly get that sense when reflecting on the coronation scene earlier in the film. Odin has such a great dramatic pause here as he locks down what he wants to do. He's processing a lot in this small moment. And had he already whittled Thor's punishment down to this final banishment? If Thor had shown remorse, would Odin have gone so far? Was he thinking sending Thor from Asgard to Midgard would be good punishment? When Odin references ‘loved ones' that Thor has betrayed, is he meaning just the family? Or all of Asgard? Loki has such a great tennis match moment here as he watches this fight. Is he sad at all that his actions have brought this all down on Thor? Or just shocked that Odin has taken it to this point? Or is he really just biting his lip with glee? We try to figure out the lore and history of Mjølnir. Odin not only takes Mjølnir from Thor but he uses it to strip the armor from Thor's arms. He then uses it to banish Thor, blasting him back into the Bifrost to cast him out. It says a lot that Odin uses Thor's own weapon to cast him out. It's a shame, though, that we don't get more pointed moments later in the franchise that point out the specifics of Thor's armor and rank. But what's interesting is that Odin then whispers what seems to be a spell into Mjølnir – a line of text that had been written on it in the comics – “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” So it seems that in the MCU at least, this is the moment when only those who are worthy can wield Mjølnir. This is certainly different from mythology. Is it also a part of fact that Mjølnir, like Gungnir, is made of Uru that allows it to be enchanted thus? There's also that ‘he' in that spell. It just feels dated now. With Taika Waititi behind the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, we sort of expect that he's going to find a way to deal with that. Kinda like that moment in Star Trek 6. Does it matter that Odin says ‘hold' versus ‘lift'? It seems a bit like a semantic battle, eh? So Odin banishes Thor from Asgard to Midgard. And it's incredibly dramatic. As far as sending Thor through the Bifrost then Mjølnir through immediately afterward, the scene construction is a bit wonky as we do cross the line, making it appear as if Odin sends the hammer in the complete opposite direction of Thor. Is that just meant to show us that it's not going to land directly on top of Thor? Is it just planetary rotation? To that end, how does he actually operate the Bifrost and Heimdall's Observatory with Gungnir? Is there a mental connection? Again, Loki gives great stone faces through all of this. Thor's trip through the Bifrost looks so much rougher than his earlier journey. Was that because he had Mjølnir? Or more because of his intentionality on that journey as opposed to this one where he's thrown into it? Or is this because Odin operates it with Gungnir, not Heimdall with Hofund? And we're back on Earth. I mean, Midgard. Well, you know what we mean. Thor lands and we have several shorthand shots to put us back into that moment when they drive into the atmospheric disturbance (aka the Bifrost) then crash into Thor. It's the exact same shot that we saw back in minute 3, but here it's clear they haven't manipulated the lighting so we can now actually see they crash into Thor as opposed to some shadowy figure. Meanwhile in the MCU, we learn that Thor's coronation, the attack on Odin's vault, and Thor's journey with his friends to Jotunheim all happened on May 30th. Interestingly, they actually return on the 31st of May so somewhere in there, there may be a time zone they crossed. So Thor lands on Midgard, aka Earth, on May 31st, 2010, the same day that General Ross battles Hulk at Culver University, Tony Stark battles Ivan Vanko, aka Whiplash, at the Stark Expo, and that Agent Phil Coulson stops several robbers from holding up a small gas station in the deserts of New Mexico. From Thor's banishment from Asgrd to Midgard, to Odin's spell on Mjølnir, to Loki's reaction, to the rough trip through the Bifrost, to Thor getting hit by a car, we cover a lot with JJ. Tune in!
