For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to writer, broadcaster and campaigner Darren McGarvey (also known as rapper Loki) to talk about his book and live show, Trauma Industrial Complex, and the album Not Funded By Creative Scotland, which are three central strands of the same multi-media project, and the two discuss just how they work together, but also stand alone.Darren talks about the challenges of taking the show to the Fringe, but why it was important to do so, before talking about the differences, and similitude, in writing the book, album, and for a live performance, and the responses to each. The two then discuss each strand in detail - how the album was recorded, the research behind the book, the difference between committing words to the page, and saying them on stage, and where his love of language comes from.Darren explains what the Trauma Industrial Complex is, talks about the contradiction at the heart of the book, the difference between sharing and oversharing, the freedom that his music brings, and why. He also reflects on the changes in Scotland's hip-hop community over the years, and what being nominated for Best Hip Hop artist for this year's Scottish Alternative Music Awards means. It was a privilege and a pleasure to be able to sit down with Darren and talk about not only his current work, but also to reflect on his varied and rightly celebrated past, and to consider the future. SWH! consider him one of Scotland's most thoughtful, reflective, and necessary, cultural figures, and we hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as we did recording it.For full details, including all the ways to listen, head to scotswhayhae.com

At the age of 60, Brian Woodley was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer's dementia. As a successful business owner, avid footballer, father, grandfather and the last one to leave the dance floor, this diagnosis turned his life upside down. But Brian refused to let dementia define him and with the support of his wife, Keely, he has discovered and embraced the sport of walking football through Bradford City FC, enabling him to keep fit and active whilst bringing renewed purpose, friendship and joy. Brian is a volunteer “Expert by Experience” for the Pathways Programme run by Bradford University which supports those affected by young-onset Alzheimer's Dementia. Brian and Keely have recently started an Instagram account called The Life of Brian and Loki to share what it is like to live with dementia as a younger person. They are also currently fundraising to help pay for the training of Loki, Brian's assistance dog, to enable him to provide vital support to Brian in the future. In this episode, Brian and Keely discuss the motivation behind their decision to share Brian's story on their Instagram account, highlighting that the challenges of young-onset dementia are still relatively hidden. Brian shares his struggle in coming to terms with the disease, the support that has been provided through Pathways and the difference that walking football has made to both his physical and mental health, as well as the joy it has brought to both of their lives. This is a candid and honest account of the realities of living with dementia as well as the joy, hope and strenghth that can be found in sharing experiences, connection and community.

Joshua Noel, Justin Coleman, and Alex Matthews dive into the multiverse of storytelling this week as they dissect the epic narratives of Loki Season 2 and the Doctor Who episode, "The Story in the Engine." Right from the get-go, they ponder whether our narratives are preordained or if we wield the quill to write our own tales, with Loki's chaotic charm and the Doctor's whimsical wisdom leading the charge. The trio breaks down the fundamental themes of control versus freedom, showcasing how Loki, the God of Mischief, opts to hold stories together, while the Doctor liberates narratives by cutting loose the constraints. While they navigate through time travel conundrums, they also explore the cultural ramifications of these beloved characters and their unique journeys. With humor and insightful banter flowing freely, listeners are in for a thought-provoking ride through time, narrative, and the essence of storytelling itself.Exploring the intersections of narratives in popular culture, the discussion kicks off with a deep dive into Loki Season 2 and its thematic parallels with the Doctor Who episode 'The Story in the Engine.' The trio—Joshua, Justin, and Alex—engage listeners by breaking down complex topics such as determinism versus free will, and how stories shape our understanding of identity and existence. With a laid-back vibe, they share personal anecdotes about their geeky obsessions, from video games to movies, setting a relatable tone for the more intricate discussions to follow. They emphasize the significance of character development in both Loki and Doctor Who, illustrating how these narratives reflect broader societal themes. The episode transitions to a nuanced analysis of how both shows tackle the concepts of control and chaos through their protagonists, Loki and the Doctor, ultimately leading to questions about personal agency in storytelling. The hosts' banter keeps the atmosphere light, though they tackle serious philosophical questions that resonate with listeners on a deeper level. As they wrap up, they encourage audience interaction, inviting listeners to share their own six-word stories, making this a dynamic and engaging episode for fans of both franchises.Takeaways: The discussion highlights the philosophical questions raised in both 'Loki' season 2 and 'Doctor Who', particularly about free will versus determinism, suggesting that narratives may not be as predetermined as they seem. Joshua, Justin, and Alex explore the role of storytelling in shaping our identities, comparing Loki's journey of holding stories together to the Doctor's quest for freeing narratives, reflecting on the importance of connection and relationships. The podcast emphasizes the cultural impact of both series, noting how 'Loki' has redefined the God of mischief as a hero while 'Doctor Who' continues to explore the nuances of storytelling and imagination. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their own stories, with the hosts sharing their six-word narratives, highlighting the personal connections and meanings derived from such storytelling exercises. The contrasting resolutions of the protagonists—Loki's sacrifice to hold stories together versus the Doctor's liberation of narratives—spark a conversation about the nature of control and the value of relationships in storytelling. Overall, the episode promotes a deeper understanding of how both 'Loki' and 'Doctor Who' address themes of identity, agency, and the significance of our individual and collective narratives. ..You can leave a one-time gift, purchase some SG merch, or become a member on our website:https://systematic-geekology-shop.fourthwall.com/.Follow our Marvel podcasts playlist:

Snorri Sturluson, a poet and politician murdered in thirteenth-century Iceland, composed the Prose Edda as a handbook to preserve the myths. Norse creation mythology describes life beginning in Ginungagap, the eternal void where the fire world (Muspel) met the ice world (Niflheim), forming the primordial ice giant Ymir. The mythological destruction, Ragnarok (the doom of the gods), involves the fire giant Surtr and Loki arriving on Naglfar, a ship terrifyingly constructed from the fingernails of dead people. 1920

The discussion focuses on Norse mythology, noting that main written sources, such as Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, were recorded in 13th-century Iceland, post-conversion to Christianity, necessitating caution in interpretation. The creation story involves the eternal void (Ginnungagap) meeting the fire world (Muspelheim) and the ice world (Niflheim), from which the primordial ice giant Ymir formed. The end of the world is Ragnarök, where the fire giant Surtr destroys the world and Loki sails the ship Naglfar, made from the nails of dead people. Snorri Sturluson, a major figure in this era, was murdered in his own basement around the 13th century on the orders of the Norwegian king during a time of civil war in Iceland.
