Keith Burns is an award-winning aviation artist and illustrator. As a student he dreamed of becoming a comic book artist but after his teachers at art college discouraged him from the career path, he dropped out and became a bus driver. Ten years later he received an email inviting him to submit a comic strip to a talent finding project. His submission led to a meeting with Dave Gibbons, co-creator of Watchmen. Gibbons encouraged my guest to pursue his gift, which eventually led to a long-standing collaboration with renowned comic book writer Garth Ennis. In 2012 he joined the Guild of Aviation Artists, in 2015 won the Messier Dowty award for Best Acrylic Painting, and in 2016, the Aviation Painting of the Year. In 2023 in collaboration with James Holland he published The Second World War: An Illustrated History, for which my guest produced nearly 300 illustrations during the course of five years. Para la ocasión tenemos aquí nombres como Dave Gibbons, Sean Phillips, Jamie Delano, David Lloyd, Brian Azzarello, Eddie Campbell y otros Selección musical: 🎶 The Twelve Days of Yaksmas, de Ren & Stimpy's Crock O' Christmas 🎶 What Are You Doing New Year's Eve, de Ella Fitzgerald

The ACP set themselves a reading challenge earlier this year. Trying books, series and moments in comic book time that they had not experienced before. For this fun exercise they roped in Tom Curry and Eamonn Clarke (Mega City Book Club) to do the same, and the result is a whole ton of amazing comic talk. From manga classics and epic comic movements to series since adapted for tv and classic graphic novels from critically acclaimed creators, this one has it all. Hear about how spiritual leader and author David Gibbons felt that he wrote his memoir as a way to process his life and his experience, calling the book The Shape of My Eyes. In an honest conversation, Dr. Gee and David break down what “model minority” means for Asian Americans and African Americans. They consider how this concept also worked toward putting the two racial communities in opposition to one another by weaponizing the term. They continue Dr. Gee's awareness around how the unity between Asian American and Black communities can be perpetuated. Also, hear how David tries to get Dr. Gee to go white water rafting. Detective Comics, better known as DC, has delivered some of the most iconic superhero characters of all time such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Harley Quinn. In 1986, the first issue of Watchmen appeared which was something altogether different. A violent, transgressive, political, and sexual take on superheroes, the series (now a graphic novel), was troubling to some but loved by others. The talents behind the graphic novel include write Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. Since its debut, the popularity with its alternate timeline has only grown as it became a movie simply titled Watchmen, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and directed by talented and enigmatic Zack Snyder.Receiving mixed reviews, the movie may have been before its time as comic book films were just at the cusp of dominating the movie box office. In this first of two episodes, your co-hosts talk about the backstory of source material and the dream of Zack Snyder trying to make what many thought as an impossible source material to adapt into what is now considered a beloved cult film by many.
Dr. Eric Bryant interviews Dave Gibbons. Dave serves as pastor of New Song Church in Orange County, CA and an advisor in the corporate world. He is the author of Xealots: Defying the Gravity of Normality, The Monkey and the Fish: Liquid Leadership for a Third-Culture Church, and his newest one which is his memoir The Shape of My Eyes: A Memoir of Race, Faith, and Finding Myself. They discussed ministry in the marketplace, bringing justice to our broken world, and moving the church to become more like the X Men Academy rather than a megachurch. Steve, Ron, and John take a look at two new releases: an animated adaptation of the first half of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's seminal graphic novel, Watchmen, and the latest entry in a franchise that keeps on kicking (and hugging faces and dripping acid blood), Alien: Romulus.
This is a new adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book, so while the plot points of this film are openly discussed, it can hardly be called SPOILERS. Watchmen Chapter 1 is DC's newest full-length animated film, kicking off a two-part adaptation of the acclaimed 1986 Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book. The movie was directed by Brandon Vietti, who joined this episode to discuss Watchmen Chapter 1. Vietti is a longtime DC animator known for his work on Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Batman: Under the Red Hood. In this episode, Vietti discusses the process for adapting the storyline. He also discusses the other media adaptations, including a 2008 Motion Comic, the 2009 live-action Zack Snyder film, and the 2019 HBO Watchmen sequel/spin-off series. For Watchmen, Vietti had to walk a difficult line, staying faithful to the comic while making the story work in an animated format. Watchmen Chapter 1 is out on digital and will be released on Blu-Ray/DVD.
We all hear stories of people walking away from faith because of cultural challenges and hypocrisy in the church. That's what makes Dave Gibbons' new memoir, “The Shape of My Eyes,” so powerful. He joins Skye to talk about growing up within American fundamentalism as a mixed-race kid, and how he encountered God despite deep family trauma and church dysfunction. Also this week—Mike Erre joins the crew to talk about the ongoing fallout from Megan Basham's new book, David French's decision to endorse Kamala Harris, and the rise of the post-religious right. What happens when a pastor sets out, not to minister to people who look like him, but to purposely reach people who look as different from his current congregation as possible? That's what Dave Gibbons, the founding pastor of Newsong Church in Orange County, CA did. In this episode, Karl Vaters talks with him about the planting of Newsong, the challenges Dave faced when he decided to guide them to look more like the diverse county they were ministering in. Dave talks honestly and vulnerably about how the Holy Spirit challenged him to reach out to the misfits and the marginalized. This challenged him and the church in huge ways, including a massive drop in attendance that he had to find his way through emotionally, financially, and spiritually. Karl's new book, De-Sizing the Church: How Church Growth Became a Science, Then an Obsession, and What's Next is now available wherever you buy books, either electronically or in print. If you've read the book and you'd like Karl to speak to your group about the issues he raises in it, reach out at KarlVaters.com/contactme. Learn more about your ad choices.
