Phil and Emily continue the Angelina Jolie action films miniseries with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life (2003), joined by Carson Betts and Caroline Thompson, co-hosts of the How Have You Not Seen It podcast. All four participants are watching this film for the first time. This is relevant information.The Cradle of Life follows Lara Croft racing to find Pandora's Box before a rogue scientist with strong Peter Thiel energy can use it as a biological weapon, with complications provided by her ex-lover Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler. It cost $95 million, grossed $160 million worldwide, and opened July 25th, 2003 against Spy Kids 3D, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys 2, and Seabiscuit. It received three stars from Roger Ebert, which nearly convinced Emily to see it in theaters that summer. She saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen instead. Phil does not believe she made the better choice. The film was also banned in China for giving the impression of a country in chaos overrun by secret societies. Hollywood had not yet figured that out.The consensus is that this movie is more competent than the first Tomb Raider along nearly every axis, which somehow makes it less enjoyable. Phil calls it dumb and not fun, as opposed to the first film, which was dumb and fun. Emily notes the big action set piece in the middle is a shootout in a lab, which she finds strange given the title. The Supervillains are back!  And no, we're not talking about The Guys, though all three of them are in the studio today.  It's time for a catch-up episode on the Regrettable Supervillains segment, aka Jay's Regrettable Segment.  He mustered up a couple of doozies in this episode.  Let us begin.  First up is The Dictator, aka Hitler disguised as the devil.  The Guys aren't sure he's redeemable, but his arch-enemy Mr. Justice has a quirky backstory.  Then comes Dr. Dracula, who neither sees patients, teaches students, or hails from Transylvania.  What's up with this guy?  Not much, as it turns out.  It doesn't take much for Captain Battle and sidekick Hale to overcome him and his Nazi spies dressed like bats.  How a superhero lost an eye might make for a better story.  Before they get to Villain news, though, it's time for Geeks of the Week.  More sad news from Art?  Afraid so, and this time it's Roger Sweet: without him there would be no He-Man movie this year.  And there is great anticipation that none of the guys will be able to see any of 2026's movies in a local Infinity Vision theater - who's ready to sponsor a work trip to Vegas?  Robbie teases the teaser from the new season of Ted Lasso, and also announces (to GOCA listeners, anyway) that there's about to be one less Cook in the kitchen at Apple.  Jay was going to apply for the job, until found out they make computers, not pies.

In this episode, host Judge Gunn is joined by attorneys Jim Lodoen of Spencer Fane LLP and Doug Kelley at Kelley, Wolter & Scott, P.A. to discuss Tom Petters, who operated a $3.65 billion Ponzi Scheme based in Minnesota before the scheme unraveled. Doug Kelley shares the fascinating details of the major criminal investigation into Petters that began when Diana Coleman, a participant in the scheme, informed the FBI that Petters owed at least $3.5 billion to victims of his scheme, and agreed to wear a wire to gather evidence against Petters. Petters cloaked his massive Ponzi scheme in a cloak of legitimacy by acquiring significant ownership interests in legitimate companies, including Polaroid, using ill-gotten gains from the scheme. Petters, a prolific salesman, started the scheme by targeting smaller mom and pop businesses, and eventually moved up to soliciting hedge funds to invest in the scheme. Petters used the fruits of the scheme to fund a lavish luxury lifestyle, including multiple luxury homes, a Bentley, and regular trips to Las Vegas. Doug Kelley was ultimately appointed as the receiver for a number of Petters' entities that were involved in the scheme, which then led them to file several Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases. Jim Lodoen was then tapped in the corporate bankruptcies to assist in recovering fraudulent transfers made from the corporate debtors to the “net winners” of the Ponzi scheme for ratable distribution to all victims of the scheme, including clawing back charitable donations made by Petters using his ill-gotten gains, including (ironically) the John Petters Ethical School of Business at Miami, Ohio which was created using a $5 million donation from Petters. Lodoen also assisted in negotiating a cooperation agreement with the U.S. Attorneys' office to coordinate recovery efforts across the criminal case and the corporate bankruptcy cases, and ultimately wound up hiring attorneys in at least 32 different countries to assist in recovering funds from “net winners” abroad. Ultimately, the professionals working to recover the funds from “net winners” winded up making a roughly 30% dividend to all victims of the scheme. Petters was ultimately convicted of multiple counts of wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering, and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
