Welcome to the Applying Scripture Podcast. I am so glad that you have chosen to spend a few minutes discussing God's Word with me. Scripture is not meant for us to just read, quote, and memorize. Scripture is for us to apply to ourselves in life-changing
In today's episode we take a closer look at James 2:17- Many people like me have used this passage as a proof that God expects more from us than "just" having faith. However, typically the works that we emphasize as being necessary for our salvation are not the works that James had in mind in this particular text. Put on your thinking hats, and join me for this discussion. Let's all strive to more faithfully fulfill the royal law. Love your neighbor as yourself. Thinking Critically is back! In this episode we take a look at Romans 8:28 as well as 1 Corinthians 4:6. Are all things really for our good? Am I only allowed to do what I read in the Bible? Grab your copy of "When church Hurts" here: Support the show

What do they actually mean? A better understanding of them can bring about freedom in our lives. Let's dig in together. Support the show
In today's episode we tackle a few things:Does Acts 17:30 teach that God does not allow for ignorance of any kind? In other words, if we do our best to study and learn, but we are mistaken on some point, will we be condemned? Or was Paul teaching something entirely different? Do all NT Christians receive identical instructions concerning the same topics? Is it possible to apply principles differently and still have unity? Let's dive in to this very important discussion together.Support the show
1 Corinthians 15:33 is one of the first verses that teenagers are taught to memorize in most churches. They are taught to avoid hanging out with certain kinds of people, because it can ruin their morals. This can be sound advice in many instances, but is that the point Paul was making? Who was the "bad company" in 1 Corinthians 15? Let's dive in. Support the show
Have you ever heard the phrase "stand in the gap"? Usually, it is used in a leadership context. Where an old testament passage is quoted, and the speaker is attempting to persuade men to be leaders and to fill the void. It is true that we need more leaders. However, is that what this text is speaking about? Let's examine Ezekiel 22:30 together. Support the show
Often times, passages of scripture can be weaponized in a manner that is quite harmful. Pulling a verse out of context in order to justify your standards and bind them on others, can be quite destructive. Perhaps no one has "suffered" the affects of this more and more often than our women, and young ladies. Let's stop that cycle, and think critically about what Biblical modesty is. It may not be what you think. Support the show
Throughout much of my experiences within churches, I have seen 1 Corinthians 8:13 used as a "principle" for how to handle disagreements. Essentially, if someone doesn't like something or is offended by it, then you can't do it. Is that what Paul was really saying? Are we only allowed to operate in ways that everyone agrees with? Let's dive in and think critically together. Support the show
When we view the Bible as a set of rules and lists, we will see rules and lists when we examine the text. Sometimes that is helpful. Sometimes, it takes away from the true nature of the text that is in question. Join me today as we re-evaluate Matthew 18:17. What does it mean to treat someone like a tax collector and a gentile? Was Jesus teaching a "3 strikes and you're out" approach to handling conflict? Is there something more at work here? Let's dive in. Support the show
Have you ever prayed for someone who was sick to get better and then watch as they continue to decline in their health or even pass away? Doesn't James 5:15 teach that if we have faith and we pray that God will heal them? Have you ever wondered why God did not hear your prayer, or answer it in the way you wanted Him to? Is it possible that we have misunderstood this passage completely? Let's dive in together. Support the show
Are you a critical thinker? Do you throw that out of the window when you study scripture? We all face many challenges in Bible study. If we want to be the best students of scripture that we can be, we need to learn to question our pre conceived ideas, and test all things. In this episode we discuss what is meant by the title of this podcast.Certainly, no Christian wants to misapply the word of God. However, simply having that desire, does not mean that we will succeed. Applying scripture, is often more difficult than it seems. This is the second part in our series, discussing what the Bible teaches concerning the New Heavens and the New Earth. This episode we spend our time focusing more on the Temple. How God's dwelling place was supposed to be with man, and then sin ruined that. We see God, coming to man in limited ways in the tabernacle, the temple, and also Jesus himself coming in the flesh. But what does that mean for the New Heaven & Earth? Let's discuss it together. Support the show
