“Seek ye the LORD all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger.” (Zephaniah 2:3)
Christopher Coffman Matthew 5:5 This week we unpack what Jesus actually meant by meekness — not timidity or passivity, but the humble, God-trusting strength we see in Moses and most fully in Jesus. And the surprising good news is that meekness isn't something we manufacture on our own — it grows in us as we come to Jesus and learn from him.

Guest speaker Emily Crider steps into the "Flourishing" series to examine the third beatitude: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Drawing from her extensive ministry work with university graduate students, Emily breaks down our modern discomfort with the word "meekness," which is often misconstrued as weakness, powerlessness, or passivity. By contrasting the oppressive, self-exalting power structures of the ancient Roman Empire with the humble stance of Jesus, she redefines meekness as power under control. Emily challenges the community—whether they feel voiceless and exhausted or hold positions of cultural influence—to surrender their control to the Lord, trust in His timing, and use their strength for the flourishing of others. In this narrative-driven episode of She Will Flourish, Rachel Earp dismantles the religious and cultural lies that equate gentleness with weakness. Discover the true, unshakeable kingdom authority that comes from walking in holy alignment, why loudness is often a mask for insecurity, and how your quiet temperament is actually your greatest superpower in a chaotic world. If you are a woman with a big vision, a deep calling, or an entrepreneurial drive, the phrase "meek and quiet spirit" might make you want to run the other way. We've been conditioned to think it means being an invisible doormat with nothing valuable to say.But what if culture has it completely wrong? In this episode, host Rachel Earp opens up with a powerful story from a high-level networking room that changes everything you thought you knew about presence and power. Using the rich, timeless language of 1 Peter from the Bible, Rachel reframes meekness not as weakness, but as power under control—an incorruptible ornament that is of "great price" in the sight of God.If you are a quiet visionary, an introverted leader, or a deep thinker who feels completely out of place in today's loud, aggressive "boss babe" hustle culture, pull up a chair to our front porch. It is interesting to know that Father's Day, which this year will be celebrated on June 16th, was, ironically, inspired by a Mother's Day sermon. Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, a Spokane Washington artist, is credited with fostering Father's Day. She got the idea while listening to her minister deliver an impassioned sermon on motherhood. Mrs. Dodd's mother had died young, so her father had to raise 6 children alone. As she listened to the minister, praise mothers for the hardship they endured in raising their children and tending to all the family needs. She reflected on her father's sacrifices, and speculated that there must be other fathers whose similar sacrifices went unrecognized. In a letter to the president of the Spokane Ministerial Association, Mrs. Dodd proposed a day to honor fathers. She suggested June 5th, her father's birthday, the association approved the idea, and the Spokane YMCA publicized it. However, the suggested date didn't allow the ministers enough time to prepare sermons, so the celebrated was scheduled for the 3rd Sunday in June. Thursday on June 19th, 1910. Spokane became the 1st city to honor fathers with a special day. A strong push for the National Father's Day came from Harry C. Meek, a president of the Uptown Lions Club of Chicago. Through the lions, or though the lions crowned him the originator of Father's Day, Meek admitted that the idea 1st occurred to him in 1915. 5 years after Mrs. Dodd's suggestion. He suggested it in speeches before several Lions Clubs, and the idea caught on. The following year, President Wilson's participation in Father's Day ceremony by pressing the button in the nation's capital which unfurled the flag in Spokane. Despite this national gesture, many sections of the country did not take part. President Coolidge also showed interest in creating a national day to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children while in office. And in 1936, the National Father's Day committee was formed in New York City to promote the celebration actively on the national level. It was in 1957 that Senator Margaret Chase Smith stated that the official recognition of Mother's Day required that Father's Day receive the same honor. She stated that, “Congress has been guilty now for 40 years of the worst possible oversight, to say the least, perpetuated against the gallant of fathers, young and old of our land,” she said in her proposal. It was in 1972, the long wait for a national recognition came to an end when President Nixon signed the congressional resolution giving Father's Day the same status as Mother's Day. And so, now we know the rest of the story about Father's Day. Celebrate Father's Day, 2002. Warm Thoughts from the Little Home on the Prairie Over a Cup of Tea Written by Dr. Luetta G Werner. In this message from The Beatitudes, Angie Richey teaches from Matthew 5:5 that meekness is power under control. Meekness is not weakness, but strength submitted to God, emotional regulation, holy restraint, and trust that God can defend, heal, and lead us without our need to dominate, retaliate, or control every outcome.Click here to view the episode transcript. Strength is often measured by power, influence, or the ability to overcome others. The world admires the loud, the aggressive, and the self-assertive. Yet in the Beatitudes, Jesus turns our understanding upside down. In Matthew 5:5, He declares, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” At first glance, meekness sounds like weakness, a quiet surrender, passivity, or fear. But biblical meekness is something far different. Meekness is strength under control. It is the willing submission of our lives to the will of God on behalf of others. The meek person trusts God enough to surrender personal revenge, pride, and self-promotion, believing that God Himself will bring justice in His perfect time and will one day grant eternal life in His kingdom.Jesus is the greatest example of this gentle strength. Though He possessed all authority and power, He humbled Himself, served sinners, welcomed the broken, and endured the cross without retaliation. He submitted perfectly to the Father's will, not because He was weak, but because He was strong in love and obedience. And in the end, Jesus truly inherited the earth through His resurrection and coming kingdom. Through Him, we learn that the strength of gentleness is the pathway to true blessing.Series: The Beatitudes: Kingdom Living in a Fallen WorldScripture: Matthew 5:5Speaker: Pastor David Hallett

Some things in life don't work the way you think they should.Trying to fall asleep often just makes you feel more awake. The more you force a conversation on a first date, the more awkward it gets. The tighter you grip a golf club, the worse your swing usually is.Sometimes the thing that actually works feels completely backwards.Jesus talked like that too. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”This Sunday we're continuing our series through the Beatitudes and exploring the upside down wisdom of Jesus.
Sin: Taking a GODLY DESIRE and fulfilling it in an UNGODLY WAY.Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is STRENGTH under CONTROL.Matthew 11:29–30 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.HARSHNESS can drive short-term results, but it will lead to long-term DESTRUCTION.2. TRUST puts your power under control because you know WHO'S IN CONTROL.When you TRUST God completely, GENTLENESS comes easily.Psalm 37:1–11 “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.”Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.3. The reward of meekness: PROGRESS.Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.Galatians 5:22–23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.Matthew 11:29–30 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Robert meets MEEK, an emerging singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist whose new EP Fabulous has become a favourite of the art world, and global queer community, since debuting in February. We discuss how art has inspired her creativity and life, including the work of Magritte, Tracey Emin and her passion for the National Portrait Gallery and visiting museums in London. We explore her devotion to artistry within her music, visuals and costumes including recent collaborations with filmmaker Sophie Muller and performance artist Theo Adams on her debut music videos, and sold out live show at the Garage.MEEK is not a work in progress. She is fully formed, earned her stripes, comes from nothing, nepo-baby baiting execution of timeless pop brilliance. While sounding directly descended from the DNA of famed countercultural misfits and bona fide pop aces, all strewn across the decades, her music is a no messing, straight shoot for the top. Georgia Meek understands that people like her only get one chance to make a first impression.Frequently, her songs will open out with a stringent big note, a walloping guitar figure, the best hook in her almanac of songwriter-ly resources. Because they have to. “I've never had the option to ask,” she says. “I've always had to take. I've always had to force my way through closed doors. That's what shapes my sound. Yes, we will start with a huge vocal note to make people turn around and listen. Yes, I will say in the studio, give me some hair-raising guitar windmills. Let's do that. You waste thirty seconds and you've lost it.”Equally, MEEK's visual aesthetic is once seen, never forgotten. She wants to reclaim dressing up for everyone, not just those that can afford to indulge in the monied whimsy of high fashion. “I have a clear visual thing for myself, which is basically prom outfits for poor people.” She's the Cinderella who flipped a finger at the Ugly Sisters, then invited them along to join in the fun, too. “It's about being absolute glam-trash and owning it. That pink tulle over a stained Adidas jacket? Throw it on. I just want it to feel like something anybody can put together themselves, a sustainable way to look fucking wild. Why not?” The best thing about MEEK? There is a point to her. She is as if the comedy queen, Daisy May Cooper stumbled into a charity shop, found a bunch of glittering second hand couture, dolled herself up shamelessly in it, injected the raw spirit of Freddie Mercury and emerged, Mr Ben style, as a fully-fledged MEGASTAR in the making out of the changing rooms, then lead a troubadour of misfits singing down the high street. There is not what you might call a shortage of self-confidence in MEEK. As she sings herself, on a calling card anthem which is sure to become the earworm of the nation once unleashed upon its airwaves: “I'm so f*cking fabulous.”This week sees MEEK performing live on numerous TV shows including Saturday Night Live UK, with Aimee Lou Wood as well as her USA TV debut with Jimmy Fallon.Follow @MustBeMeekListen to Meek's new EP Fabulous out now:https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/meek/1784432868 Hosted on Acast. Meekness takes a bad rap in our world today. No surprise, it is one of God's favorite characteristics. In fact, Jesus Himself describes His own heart as meek.If we have spiritual meekness aka gentleness, we are Settled, submissive, secure, solid and SATISFIED.As a bonus, God describes this character quality as PRECIOUS to Him. This is why it might be best to SEEK TO BE MEEK.https://youtu.be/UxADnm4n3sM
Pastor Seth Troutt continues our series, “The Good Life,” by unpacking what Jesus means when he says, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” In a world that celebrates aggression, self-promotion, and getting even, meekness can sound like weakness or irrelevance. But Jesus presents meekness as a Spirit-shaped strength: the steadiness of a “heavy bag” that absorbs insult without lashing out, and the yielded power of a “broken and bridled” horse led by its rider. In this message, Pastor Seth:- Explores the nature of biblical meekness (or gentleness) - Looks at examples of meekness in Moses, Paul, and Jesus - Talks about how daily, deliberate discipleship forms meekness in us - Points us to the staggering promise that the meek will inherit not just the land, but the whole earth in Christ This sermon is part of our Beatitudes study in “The Good Life,” where we learn how Jesus turns the values of the world upside down and invites us into a better way to live.00:00 - Introduction08:30 - The Nature of Meekness14:12 - The Meekness of Moses16:51 - The Meekness of Paul19:25 - The Meekness of Jesus28:16 - How We Become Meek34:10 - What the Meek Inherit**HOW TO FIND US*** SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YouTube CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/@IronwoodChurchAZFACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/ironwoodchurchaz/ INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/ironwood.church/WEBSITE https://www.ironwoodchurch.org/
For all you Richard Scarry fans out there, this one's for you. Blessed are the MEEK. It means BENT. I couldn't help think of Scarry's best character of all time: Lowly Worm.Blessed are the Lowly Worms out there. Picture his skinny little earthworm shape, green hat with a little feather in it; blue skinny jacket, bowtie and my favorite part: the ONE sneaker.Open your Bible to Matt 5:5 and draw his little picture there. https://youtu.be/BycU7GkRweo
In this episode, Nancy Wilson contrasts external adornment with the hidden beauty of a meek and quiet spirit, and draws on scripture and the words of Matthew Henry to show how trust in God, freedom from worry, and inward grace are of great price in the sight of God.
