They boys are back for a proper Books Over Beer discussion. Though the COVID-19 pandemic meant more time at home, it did not necessarily mean more free time to play. Between working, teaching kids, working some more the boys were busy. Now that the summer is all done of course it was time to get back together and discuss a chaptershort story from "Haunted A Novel" by Chuck Palahniuk. For a 10-15 page chapter there really was a lot to discuss. The boys did play a clip from a fan made movie to help set the stage. Hope you all enjoy this episode. On this very special episode of Discussions and Drinks we welcome back our Books Over Beer cohort Jonathon. He has been off recording episodes of his solo podcast Fortune's Wheel: A Podcast History of the Middle Ages. Though Jonathon has never seen a single episode of the show we discussed it was nice to have him back. This episode we talked both seasons of Netflix's Altered Carbon. After a long break and dealing with this lock down situation due to COVID-19 aka Corona Virus, aka Wuhan Flu,  aka the China virus... the boys are back. Since the families are healthy and also to help keep their sanity, unlike the villain in this episode, it was time to record. This podcast edition of the Books Over Beer Podcast covered Alan Moore's "Batman: The Killing Joke." This is the first graphic novel covered by the boys and oh man was it a great conversation. Of course, they were hoping to cover it in one episode... well that quickly went out the window. The tensions rise in part two of our conversation on Kim Stanley Robinson's book 2312. It darn near goes nuclear and Nick had to bleep himself at one point in the episode. Nick and Jonathon both refused to give any ground, nothing was solved, but does their friendship survive this confrontation? You will have to listen to find out!

Well this is the episode you all have been waiting for. It is definitely an episode Jonathon, Mike, and Nick have been dying to get to since they started the podcast. Over the next two episodes the boys will be getting into Kim Stanley Robinson's sci-fi book "2312." Both Jonathon and Nick have long been at odds over this book. It has been the butt of many inside jokes between the three of them. But where does Mike stand on the book? Well you will have to listen to find out. In part one the tension and angst starts to build and the gloves quickly come off. This is just the start. More action, arguing, and maybe even some shady undercuts happen in part 2! As a side not we don't know if you all believe in fate, numerology, or any thing of the sort. It was completely unplanned that the episode we would start discussing this book would be episode number 23.

This week's episode we finish up our review of Andy Weir's "The Martian." This sets up the moment that Nick has been waiting for, for a while. He and Jonathon will finally get to clash over "2312!"

The boys are back for the new year excited and ready to kick 2020 off right. Our first episode of the year they come back to this galaxy and talk about Andy Weir's book "The Martian", which also was on the silver screen in 2015. While Jonathon and Mike are huge fans of the main character, Mark Watney, Nick is not. This discrepancy does come to a head just a little bit through the conversation. Wow what a year it has been for the show! We made it to 20 episodes to end this year out! In our final episode of 2019 we finish our conversation on "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore. In the nick of time for the most wonderful time of the year, comes our Christmas special! Just like Santa Claus with gifts of joy for the masses comes the boys gift to you, part 1 of Christopher Moore's "Lamb the gospel according to Biff Christ's childhood friend!" There is more to this book than meets the eye. It has comedy, heart ache, action, and a lot more. The boys had their fair share of laughs through the discussion of this book. As is par for the course, this episode went long so it was split into a two parter. Just as a bit of a warning, the subject content of this book is a little on the mature side. So this isn't a story for ye young ones. From our families to yours, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Just in time for the release of Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker the love letter to the Star Wars universe continues with part 2. In this episode the conversation all but deviates way past the book and goes to the galaxy far far away. We really hope that the last episode in the Skywalker saga does the series justice. However the movie ends up the boys will have something to talk about for years to come. May the Force be with you!

You can tell that it is almost Christmas time by the way the boys were ready and rearing to jump in headfirst to discuss Star Wars! By far this was the single longest continuous conversation the boys have had on this podcast. So long in fact it wound up being split into two episodes. This first part the boys introduce “Legends of Luke Skywalker” by Ken Liu and for those of you who like audio books, January LaVoy narrates the audio version (and does a spectacular job)! If you haven’t already figured it out all three of the guys are major Star Wars geeks. The conversation quickly goes off on many tangents.

This week the boys finish their conversation on JK Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." The boys discuss whether Professor Snape is a villain or a hero, the transformation of Neville Longbottom, loyalty, the marauders map, and more. Also,during the intro Mike stirred the pot a bit between Jonathon and Nick by bringing up a book that Jonathon loves and Nick, well Nick doesn't like it at all. A future episode over that books is in the works for 2020.

In a bit of a change up the boys move to a favorite of those young and old, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" by JK Rowling. Book three in the series starts to change pace from a kids book to a young adult book as both the characters and the readers are getting older. The themes in this book do start to deal with death, loss, and other more serious topics. In part one the boys set the stage for where Harry is at as he is preparing to head back to his third year of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Apparently Jonathon did not get the cue that they ended part one as he kept going while Mike and Nick went on with their lives over the week. This episode the boys finish up Ann Rice's "Interview with a Vampire" with a little bit of flare.

In this episode the boys continue the Halloween theme with "Interview with a Vampire" by Anne Rice. This is the first book in her Vampire Chronicles series. This book was adapted to the silver screen with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, Stephen Rea, Antonio Banderas, and Christian Slater. The boys get through the first half of the book when they have to cut Johnathon off, who would have kept on his diatribe for another hour! This is a fun episode to listen too. On this spooky special Halloween Edition of the Books over Beer Podcast, the boys discuss some chilling and haunting tales throughout history. Are aliens, the third man, the yeti, and ghost real? In part four of our discussion on Ron Paul​'s "The Revolution - A Manifesto" we go in deep on the US Constitution, the three branches of the US Government and their enumerated powers. The discussion got heavy on the how the roles of the three branches have changed since the founding of the country

In part 2 of our discussion on Ron Paul's "The Revolution - A Manifesto", we dig deep into the foreign policy chapter of the book. The discussion touches on everything from isolationism, to the wars in the middle east (steaming from 9/11), what our founding fathers said about treaties with other nations, and will Jonathon and/or Mike get Nick to say "Taxation is Theft!"

In part one the boys introduce Ron Paul and the book that started it all for the liberty movement, "The Revolution A Manifesto" We also want to recognize and honor the victims of 9/11 and those who have lost their life’s in the wars since then, as we recorded this episode on the 18th anniversary of the attacks.

They Navy SEALs have a saying "The only easy day was yesterday." The special warfare operators of the SEAL Teams are some of the most elite special operations war fighters on the plant and the members of SEAL Team 6 are the creme de la creme. What happens when these guys go after the U.S’s enemy number 1? Well… they get their guy. This episode we dig into the book "No Easy Day" by Mark Owen, who is a retired member of the SEAL Team that went after and killed Osama Bin Laden.

This episode the boys get a little Seussian, as they talk Dr. Seuss’s Yertle the Turtle, which was first published in the early 1950's. At the center of the story is the Turtle King, Yertle the turtle. Though it may seem a mere children's book, there are some powerful lessons that the story can teach kids and adults alike.  The episode unpacks a lot of information, we hope you enjoy!

After a couple of month break the boys are back. Though they started off a little rusty the conversation was on point the entire time. This week Jonathon, Mike, and Nick discuss George Orwell's "Animal Farm." This was a great discussion on about the book and the major political philosophies: capitalism, socialism, and communism. 

This episode the boys are back and this time they talk about the February book of the month "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. There was a lot of great topics, themes, and a ton of 80's and 90's nostalgia throughout this book. Even though this was the second time this episode was recorded it came out great!
